Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Master list in post 2

Quick question: who made the Jak 3 guides that are pennied out at BB? I've seen one Jak 3 guide at BB, but it wasn't made by Prima or Brady.
Quick question: who made the Jak 3 guides that are pennied out at BB? I've seen one Jak 3 guide at BB, but it wasn't made by Prima or Brady.
It's made by Piggyback, which is a division of Prima.
It's made by Piggyback, which is a division of Prima.
Awesome, that's the one at Best Buy. I had it in my hands too, and then I had to get out of the store cause they were closing so I just put it back on the rack. *smacks forehead* Oh well, that Best Buy is in a densely populated area, it should be there the next time we go through town. Thanks.
I was able to get Doom 3 and Band of Brothers. Was also finally able to snatch a Burnout demo as well.

Anyone willing to trade a Paper Mario or Star Ocean 3 guide for an RE4 (I got an extra awhile back) or Band of Brothers guide?
band of brothers? lol hahahahaha. i would like to get band of brothers for a penny. its a nice show.

Hit a second BB and picked up Doom 3 for Xbox. Also picked up Brothers in Arms and a Starfox Assault. Morrowind GOTY still full price.

sup yall i was wondering how do you find penny guides? its has the price tag on it or you have to ask the counter or sales person?

Actually if some nice person can get me a Forza, I'd pay the 3 bucks to have it shipped... don't feel like driving all the way to Clearwater today.

You never know, man. You never know. There might be a fellow CAG out there who just happens to have an extra copy of PM:TTYD or SO:TTEOT guide from the previous 0.01 clearance and would really like to have a BIA guide (or RE4 guide for that matter) but couldn't get any.

Just throwing it out there just in case. Better safe than sorry.

Anyway, I think I have NFSU2 guide too if anyone's interested for a trade. I'll have to check my stash again to see if there are other guides I can trade.

Edit: Changed "BOB" to "BIA."

Sorry about the confusion, trunks982.

I think hes refering to misnaming of the game Brother in Arms and the HBO series, Band of Brothers. Good game and good series.

damn... shut out from Penny guides ...again... even my TRU pulled them EARLY (the only time I ever got them there was the last markdown, and only by hiding them)... was looking forward to finding a copy of BIA, and Doom 3... anyone generous enough to share the wealth, I have guides to trade and money to spend... if not, I will just pray that I find them used at a gamestop or something...

Went back to same EB as last nite, and looked again. I didn't notice they had another rack of guides =0. It wasn't as big, but i did get Act of War and Axis and Allies from there.

Plus I don't have the gas to get to Clearwater :(

hello all Ft Wayne CAG'ers

I would like to set up a guide swap day at glenbrook or something if there's a couple of people intrested. I am pretty much looking for anything not on my have list in my sig. I should have everything in my looking to trade heading and possibly a few others. post or pm I should have around 100 extra from the last 2 years or so when I discovered CAG and guides.

Thanks all and let me know.

Do you have a tradelist?

I hit up the local EBGames, found a ton of penny guides, and took four to the checkout. Unfortunately the guy that was working was rather new, and his boss was also there...when he rang it out, he said he had to ask his manager...the manager questioned me as to how i knew these guides were a penny...i said the internet, to which she asked "what site?" I said "ebgames.com"...after a couple more questions, she decided to destroy these guides...luckily i left a bunch of others on the shelves...i'll try back thursday if the two people aren't there....

From there, i went to best buy. No penny guides there either. They did, however, have some Warcraft Figures from awhile back (i remember getting one with a preorder for the Warcraft 3 Expansion). They were tagged 9.99, but rang up 1.99. Not bad if you can find them in stock
Do you have a tradelist?
I'll just buy it straight up... only guides I had to trade are going to Shrike, since he got nothing.

I've usually been able to buy all the guides I didn't get through here for the last 3 or so drops, it's weird how no one yet has an extra Forza to sell to a CAG.

I got lucky today it seems my bestbuy store put out all their old left over guides out for sale this week. I was able to pick up 1 copy of each:

jak 3 (3 copies left)
jade empire
metroid prime 2
urbz
star fox assault (cover is beat up)
call of duty (8 copies left)
doom 3
brother in arms

But no luck at finding anything except Cold Fear at ebgames. But I'm going to checkout Target to see what guides they have clearance tonite and report back later.

gta san andreas and halo 2 spots on the shelf at target were empty. there was like 15 between them last time i was there. probably not dropped but just thought I would mention it in case someone has more info or wants to investigate. more likely removed from all the recent media attention. bleh...
Does any one know if KOTOR-1 has been pennied at Best Buy yet? I know the second one is, and this one is older.
I tried the pc version of the guide, but it's still regular price.

It is really crazy that you found some of these . . . MP2 in particular . . . that drop was months ago . . . cool for you.

I was able to get additional copies of the following and would be willing to trade for a good copy of GC Paper Mario, then a Star Ocean-TTEOT guide:

Forza Motorsport
Doom 3
RE4
Brothers In Arms
Star Wars: Republic Commando
Jak 3
NFSU2

Just an FYI, but thanks to all the posters in this thread, i was able to get the following too:
Metroid Prime 2
Onimusha 3
MGS 3
PoP: Warrior Within
Splinter Cell: PT
Xenosaga Episode 2
Fight Night Round 2
Burnout 3
Tekken 5

I had to drive to 8 different BB's (getting lucky on at least 5 of them; one of the stores - Lakewood - had a stack, but I was met with a rude clerk who told me that they're not supposed to be selling them and brought them to the back), but it was well worth it. Never got lucky at a TRU, EB, or GS store.

I'd prefer if you live around Southern California (OC area), and we could just meet up. Otherwise, we can make arrangements, I guess.

I'd list Jade Empire and Splinter Cell: CT, but I got lucky and had them for free from E3. =)

Ditto for the KOTOR guide, which I got as a "loaner" from my older brother, who bought the Xbox package primarily for his 10-year old daughter, who ended up playing mostly the Sims game on it. He can have it back if he really wants to, but he never really have asked for it.

Since the Forza guide came down in price, does anyone expect the GT4 guide to come down in price anytime soon? What about God of War guide? Halo 2 Official Guide (which BB has a bunch of)? Would it be safe to buy them now from BB and have them price-matched within 30 days if they do drop? Just a few thoughts.

There's no predicting what guides they'll drop, and when. There are still a few Full Spectrum Warrior guides at my Best Buy, and they're full price. I wouldn't expect a Halo 2 drop anytime soon, that is probably one of the few guides that does sell. I wonder what's going on with GTA San Andreas though, they're not selling the game, but there are still plenty of guides on the shelves. Hmm. GT4 and God of War are probably fair game for a drop in the next couple of months though.
I wouldn't expect a Halo 2 drop anytime soon, that is probably one of the few guides that does sell.
I believe several posters have suggested that guides for FPS are generally useless given the fast-paced nature and general lack of puzzles found in most shooters. Still, I like to pick up the guide for every game I can find cheap. :D

I went to my Best Buy today. And to my surprise, they had a single Xbox Doom 3 guide, and MARKED as a penny. I would have never thought after going through their horrible(at the time) Customer Service, that they would not only be cool with me getting several different guides them last time(first penny guides I got at BB, and second time I ever got any, I'm new), they actually had this one(and maybe others that were there before) labeled as one cent. One of the employees last time told me that they do the same thing, and wait for them to drop. I wanted a Brothers In Arms guide. :(

PS: On a side note, Doom 3 PC version rang up as full price for me at Best Buy. I thought it was pennied?

I thought so too because another CAG said they got a copy for $0.01... I was about to pick up a copy yesterday but I didn't since I don't even play games on PC.

Perhaps the CAG who got the PC version for $0.01, the BB clerk scanned the XB version in twice and didn't bother for the PC (since they look identical except for the stripe on the front cover). Just a theory.

The Doom 3 PC guide was pennied on the BB website. I was able to order two copies for store pickup before it sold out. The Xbox guide was pennied out, but only available at a different BB.

Are the two Doom 3 games the same? I got the Xbox guide, but am planning on buying the PC game next week. Will it still be helpful?
I believe several posters have suggested that guides for FPS are generally useless given the fast-paced nature and general lack of puzzles found in most shooters. Still, I like to pick up the guide for every game I can find cheap. :D
True, but given the huge sales of Halo 2, I'd imagine the sales for its strategy guide are higher than average for an FPS guide. Personally I don't understand why racing games need strategy guides. I saw a bunch of Midnight Club 3 guides at Best buy yesterday, full price. What kind of 'strategy' is involved there? Drive fast and don't crash, there's yer freakin' strategy ;)
I went to my Best Buy today. And to my surprise, they had a single Xbox Doom 3 guide, and MARKED as a penny. I was at Best Buy on Tuesday, and the Xbox Game Guide for Doom 3 rang up at $19.99? I was surprised that it didn't ring up at .01. Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks,

The Doom 3 (Prima) strategy guide was pennied out at my local Best Buy along with Call of Duty Finest Hour. The Prima guide had a retail of $16.99 so it was probably a different Doom 3 guide. They actually put them on the floor and put 1 cent signs next to them. Pretty good idea if you want to get rid of them!

I got 2 of each just because. I resisted taking the entire stack of 10 or so guides each because I hate being a hoarder.

You sure it was the xbox guide for doom and not the pc? Would be strange since the xbox guide has a msrp of 16.99, not 19.99.

EDIT: slow to post

Thanks for the responses I will check another Best Buy tomorrow. I didn't look at the back of the guide for the msrp, but I am pretty sure it was the Xbox version.
