A new console is not needed right now. 80% of people won't even update their budget, 2008 hand-me-down 1080p set from grandma. They need to bank that $599 and buy a modern display instead. It's been like this since freekin 2017.

The industry really needs to focus on their core game development, their messaging, and the selling and branding of new features and hardware standards. They've done such a poor job getting customers to adopt HDR and HRR. Almost every industry player is at fault but Sony is #1 offender; they pioneered the blu-ray format. Plus they own Crunchyroll and much of home video now.

No one even knows why they would want new hardware. Some AAAA and HDR titles exist but their prominance is never touted. Why would someone need anything but a PS4? just load times?? We've had this tech for seven years already since the PS4 Pro. This is what you reap from two half-generations of chasing vapid MTX/gacha and service profits and weird social media integration. Well, now you've got a bunch of people entrenched in their various service titles, and they don't buy new things nor need new systems. This is the ecosystem you have cultivated. It's too late now. No one starts paying attention until profits have plateaued and already receded. Your garden has already withered. It didn't happen overnight.

Another big problem is that there is nowhere to reach large audiences anymore. All attention is diffused and refracted into different remote corners of the interwebs now. You're hoping to hit like 10,000 viewers at a time with commercials on different Youtube and Twitch channels. Nintendo is the only one doing things effectively (digitally) with highly polished Nintendo Directs. The 'marketing & advertising' game has changed dramatically. This is what you reap when you exit physical retail presence. You could have cardboard standees and promotional material at every Gamestop and Target but this 'full-digital' world what you wanted. Well, no one cares now. They sit at home and buy your digital scraps.

All this integration and connectivity and people are lonelier than ever. That's why you see something like Animal Crossing or Astro Bot do so well. There is little enthusiasm for modern games. and why would there be? You couldn't even advertise or promote Rebirth for example; so people don't feel a shred of immediacy to play it. You could have made Happy Meal toys. offered pencils & erasers, or postcard sized art prints at stores.

What has failed is the Salesman. The Fat cats have gotten complacent on easy digital profits. Now there is no enthusiasm.

It really depends on how much I can get a trade in deal. I got a PS4 Pro because trading in my White PS4 covered most of the cost.

great, what I am hearing is nobody wants this so it will be readily available and sitting in store shelves on launch day. sounds good.

Nah, don't... don't buy it. Let Sony see the abysmal sales and let them put it on sale for 50% off by this BF.

Seriously though, I'm curious what this thing will be. I can't imagine anything that'll be a significant jump over anything we've seen on the OG PS5... unless it can actually push 4k60 but guessing, like someone else said, it'll be more marketing related 8k non-sense most people can't enjoy.

Me still using my 1080p TV  4K looks nice but my TV is fine I don't plan on upgrading until it starts to die on me. I haven't played as much on PS5 as I did PS4 so I'm not feeling this gen anyway. I never upgraded to the PS4 Pro either I didn't see the point. I got a switch and rekindled my love of Nintendo games so I'm looking forward to Switch 2 than a pro model.

Would love to see a 30th anniversary announcement that the PS5 pro is backwards compatible with all previous ps games, vita, and psp digital like the ps tv. That’s the only surprise I can think of them adding other than just marginal performance improvements. It would allow them to justify a higher price, but there is not much money in it, so 1% chance. Management would have to actually care about their history rather than just be cashing in and exploiting it, to do something like that.

I could tell the difference between the 4 and the Pro.

Since Steam Deck my Switch is a dust collector, no need for a switch 2 (and yes lose out on Nintendo mascots, but Zelda 2 still is sitting in its wrapping).

Again, without a disc I am out on the 5 pro....with one though?... to quote Jerry Jones, "All In" (and I can't stand the Cowboys and Wak Prescott)

I think sony is getting a little to greedy not including the disc drive.

I will still get it but damn.
You think that's greedy? They're not even including the vertical stand. :bouncy:
Edit: I'll give them one thing, the internal storage is 2TB. The 2TB Series X is $600 (which is also nuts imo) but that'll make it look better to people who don't know/don't care about the disc drive.

$700 with no disc drive is not an appealing product, especially relative to pc hardware. I guess at some point after significant price drops I can move the disc drive off my slim to this model.

I wonder if sony will actually continue to manufacture those attachable drives over the long term. I suspect they won't.

At the time of the PS4 Pro release I didn't have a HDTV so it was pointless for me to get a pro. I may have upgraded if I had a HDTV because my PS4 fan was very loud playing certain games. Now that I have a really nice OLED HDTV there are no games in my opinion that justify a pro console. I personally think everything look great as is with my current setup. The fact that this doesn't have a disc drive at that price is a joke.

$700 ain't that bad in all honesty. Not only are you getting a boost in performance, your'e also getting a 2tb internal drive and saccing a disc drive. For the specs of the console, you can't come close to building a PC with the same performance for $700.

It def ain't for everyone, but I will be picking one up and selling off my old digital PS5 to offset some of the cost.

Also this is a pretty big detail:

"Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported."

MAY stabilize or improve performance…or may not 🤣

2TB SSD's are cheap now and easy to install. The game boost was already a thing on PS5 so some PS4 games got boosted to 60FPS and 1080p or higher resolutions. I don't see what else they could do to PS4 games but the game boost for PS5 games will help those that struggled to hit 60FPS. Gaming is my main hobby but $500 for the PS5 was already a hard pill to swallow for me. $800 because I need physical media is just way too much for me to comfortably spend especially with the prices rising on everything around us.

This is def going to get the 'still on PS4' people to upgrade. $780 for Frankenstein.

Do you see what happens Larry !?!! Do you see what happens when we included a 2tb NVMe 4.0 SSD in the retail pric

I am still on a ps4 pro and will not get this unless it is $599 or lower. $699 without a disc drive is wild whether you have the money or not. People keep buying and they’ll keep doing this..

I get it

I haven't bought anything console specific other than games over the last couple years. I skipped the Portal and VR, so I figure this will be my big gaming purchase for a bit lol.

Same. I still haven't upgraded from my PS4 Pro (if I've said it once, I've said it a million times, I think the look of the PS5 is ugly, and the Pro hasn't changed that). Also, can it really be called "pro" without a disc drive included? Me thinks not.

This is Sony being arrogant pure and simple, and heavily mirrors their transition from PS2 to PS3 (minus quality games only on the next console). Hell, if Microsoft hadn't fucked up last gen and this gen so much, Sony would find themselves in the same predicament trailing Xbox like they did with the PS3.

Sony is winning and feels it can get away with it. 599 with a disc drive should have been the max. I can't believe I'm about to drop 1k since I still haven't picked up a dualsense edge. :(

It just dawned on me this very moment why the Pro is digital....Sony has so many of the detachable disc drives avaialble in the wild. Now they will actually be bought and put to use....

I can sense myself back padealing already on not getting the digital Pro..yep I am a sucker...I might be able to fight off the urge for a few more days

(Tomorrow arrives, hey all I bought the detachable disc drive)

Being honest

I told you. Save your money and get an HDR big screen instead.

I found a 48" LG C4 on closeout for $699.97 this week at Costco. That's right, the 2024 model that is $1100 on amazon. like holy asdf that is a great (YMMV) deal. Apparently they are getting rid of that SKU for some reason. It upgrades ALLLL of your content viewing, gusys. Even including stupid things like streaming Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid from Crunchyroll while I was in bed last night.

That was the one major surprise to me: "wow look at the picture and video quality improvement even in (low bit rate) streaming." The stuff you already pay for, and use every. single. day. like watching nerds on Youtube. For the first time, upscaling is a real, truly noticeable thing. Even with BD discs. not to mention the performance and picture quality while watching true 4K discs (on the OG PS5 player you might already own).
