That's basically the plan for me whenever I make the switch, which may or may not happen at launch. I got a Slim earlier this year for about 30% of the price by trading in my launch PS5 that was crashing on PS5 games, which was worth it.

The Pro seems like a solid upgrade for what it's offering. Tech isn't really getting cheaper to make upgrades and none of these companies are willing to drop prices permanently anymore unless they create a cheaper model with things taken out or changed. We're pretty much done getting the $100 bargain model at the end of a platform's life at this point, as they'll just let their last models run out when they no longer do well enough to keep making them. I don't think they'll be pumping out tons of Pros and will try to keep it in modest stock, mostly for online retailers, like the Portal has been after launch.

I just watched a cnet video that went deeper into the PS5P specs. It specifies the GPU is mildly better whereas the CPU is the same stock CPU from 2020. That is insane to me. So basically we have a larger GPU, larger SSD, a delete of the disc drive, and a $200 price bump. Having 4K60 is very important to me, though the shenanigans behind the launch makes me want to boycott it. I'd need to have a special bundle with unique faceplates, an included game, and a disc drive for it to be worth it just for a mildly spec bumped GPU.

I was thinking $599 with the disc drive sold separately but this is just greed. I don't think enough people will put their foot down to make a difference (I have gotten every sony console on launch and im not breaking that trend now). The $699 pricetag is here to stay 😞

This is exactly what I was thinking. However times faster it is, more storage, and whatnot, this is basically more modern versions of 4 year old tech. It's not like they designed a system from the ground up.

Part of me thinks the price is intention for 2 reasons: 1, hardcore fans, techies, etc will pay for it and 2) anyone holding on to their PS4 still, waiting for a PS5 Pro are likely going to now consider a basic PS5 instead (which has got to have some nice margins at this point).

Whatever the case, this is post-PS2/PS3 price reveal levels of Sony hubris.

I really enjoyed The Crew, but I could not get into The Crew 2. Wish they would add in a story mode like the first game.

Sony also knows there isn't a Xbox One X coming out next year. They can sell to early adapter and drop the price next year if sales slow down.

That makes a lot of sense. The 499 price point on a base PS5 now looks more appealing. Now sony can hold the 499 price point for many more years.

You think that's greedy? They're not even including the vertical stand. :bouncy:
Edit: I'll give them one thing, the internal storage is 2TB. The 2TB Series X is $600 (which is also nuts imo) but that'll make it look better to people who don't know/don't care about the disc drive.
They could have made the ps5 pro 1 tb SSD and no disc drive and priced it at $550. The $700 price point is a bit too steep. Sony really has a knack for pissing off their fanbase. Seems like the ps3 launch all over again. I’m 50/50 on pre-ordering it.

Monkey see, monkey do. Sony sees MS pissing their fans off constantly so they figure they might as well too. If they can make a few bucks on it, all that much better!

Your comment is mostlly well-founded criticism, and then you end with "I'm 50/50 on preordering it." I'm not sure if you're being unintentionally hilarious, or you're like, "Yeah, the price sucks, but I'm still going to buy it", but preordering indicates you have rather strong interest in a product. Even if you don't preorder it, it sounds like you're inclined to buy it with the right incentive, like an added game or gift card, or if GameStop's trade value of regular PS5 increases even more towards the purchase of PS5 Pro.

i mean, i don't like the price. but comparing $700 in 2006 to $700 in 2024 is crazy.

I'm not even comparing the price points for the launch PS3 (which, in it's defense, had a then new-format BD player and had PS1/2 hardware) vs the Pro. I'm just saying for $700, this thing seems over priced... it honestly just seems like the more modernized version of the previous PS5 hardware.

You can't tell me that the PS5 is still $500 hardware, it's 4 years old at this point. I honestly think the only reason the 5 Pro is $700 because Sony knows they can still sell $500 PS5s and don't want to undercut it too much.

Honestly, if the disc drive was native, I'd buy a 5 Pro. But the non-native disc drive is what kills it for me.

Yep exactly. Having a disc drive was always the standard. "Well how do we cut the price??" They cut out the disc drive to save money (only $80 apparently).

So now the premium positioned console is missing a disc drive. That's right, the digital version console which very few people wanted in 2020 is now $700. The one that launched for $400 four years ago.

This is what Nivida does. They come out with new high-end product stack, but that doesn't mean you get any benefits. None of it is a good deal. Higher performance --> much higher prices. Instead of manufacturing processes getting streamlined, old tech becoming cheaper, no the new tech just becomes more expensive. and it's not really new tech.

But I also agree with what another previous poster said. There is very obvious wiggle room here. The Pro can and will receive a -$100 discount as soon as the next competitor hits the market, likely the NSW2 in late Q2 2025. That's where they also see the benefit from the dd cost reduction.

The Switch 2 is not competing with the PS5 Pro.

Nintendo is blazing their own path as always. Currently, there are handhelds out there that put the Switch 2 to shame (allegedely). The only benefit is their exclusives and I can live without Mario, Pokemon, Metroid, and Zelda

The Crew 2 is $0.99 until 9/24:

Ubisoft announced that they're working on offline modes for The Crew 2 and Motorfest:

I had some funds in my wallet so I picked up the Crew 2 for $1.
I wasn't going to bother with it but with offline support you can have my $1.

I am thinking this will be the last generation with disc drive. If there are disc drive for the next generation it will be the last one and they will become an optional and pricey seperate accessory you can buy.

There are fewer suppliers of disc drives today due to lack of electronics demand which is driving the cost assoicated with those. It sucks, but that is the reality and I have been slowly converting my physical collection to digital.

No FFXVI? That's disappointing. I wonder if it's going to be a surprise drop during TGS.
Kind of a weak line-up (besides The Plucky Squire) without it.

Secret Agent Clank, Skygunner, and Mr. Mosquito is nice to see.
Agreed. I'm glad they're finally really digging into their back catalogue for easy ports. I just wish they would touch up a lot of the existing PS2 -> PS4 emulated games.

When we're sitting here buying extra disc drives we don't need immediately today then yeah clearly it's time to reevaluate.

I am thinking this will be the last generation with disc drive.

Yeah, and that's when a good number of people stop buying Playstation.

We already have Steam, which does a better job and has a much stronger track record in the digital arena. When these things become 'pay-to-rent' service boxes then there will be another major shift in market demand. A far more dramatic one than some people here realize, apparently.

The Switch 2 is not competing with the PS5 Pro.
laff.

Diabolical plan:
1. Release consoles without disc drive.
2. Release disc drive add-on.
3. Reduce supply of disc drive add-on.
4. Claim consumers do not want disc drives.
5. Stop producing disc drives.

Bingo. Then you're going down the Xbox path of 2013. and look where that got them. A very distant third in the market, not counting PC. In spite of having the best digital subscription service.

Very interested in the product but the high price is such a turnoff. I’ve also amassed enough gamestop credit to pay off the ps5 pro by trading in my slim ps5 and xbseries S. I’m also in a state w/out sales tax.
I have a LG Oled tv but it’s not 8k. I also don’t want to support Sony’s decision to put out a ps5 without a disc drive at a $700 price point.
I think I’ve made up my mind.
If there’s ever a price drop, maybe I’ll buy it ? (every holiday Target has 10% off gift cards and 10% off electronics). But at that point, why not just wait for the ps6?
I waited 3 years after launch to buy a fat ps3; might just skip the ps5 pro altogether.

The only reason I have a PS5 now is that the wireless in my PS4 was starting to go. The only PS5 exclusive game I've played so far has been Stellar Blade (I don't count the Castlevania Dominus Collection cause I can still play my originals). The only 'new' PS5 I'm getting coming out is Monster Hunter Wilds & maybe the Dragon Ball Sparking Zero. Why the hell would I spend $700 on console without a disc drive or a stand, with a controller that's going to last six months at best, that I have to pay $80 a year just to play online & back up my saves, for a marginal techinical upgrade I can barely see that will only work if the game company itself wants to spend the money to make a pro upgrade.

I swear this is my last console genertation, I'm tired of this $h!t.

Well it's always nice to hear your opinions and objective analysis reinforced by some of the major content creators. esp in their conclusions.

I mean yeah, it's most of the stuff we've already talked about. But it's good to be reminded that the Pro isn't really necessary to buy or to have. good to be reminded why it exists. and also why we don't need to spend our money on it. It's nice to see that Sony is being forthright and honest about its modest performance gains, and not bombastic with over-the-top marketing rhetoric. Because the CPU and most of the architecture has not changed.

So many things questionable with your statement...

Stellar Blade? entertaining game, but I find it hard to believe that the only game you ahve for the 5 is that one

What are you doing to your controllers? 6 month lifespan?

You don't "have" to pay $80 (but if you do there are the free games each month and considering you only have Stellar Blade it would be well worth it for you)

And unless you have a PC, the fact is, Sony's move here is not going to make this your "last console generation".

It's easy to complain about no disc drive (which I myself admittedly thought was dumb), but now it appears to be a brilliant move by Sony. Those that want the drive can buy it and add to their Pro (Or Scalpers will buy them, but from a company standpoint it is still a sale).

I don't like the precident going forward to not have a disc drive, but my Steam Deck doesn't have one and I have somehow managed to survive. The Steam Deck also has addons to connect to your TV, but I do not recall a huge uproar that a dock wasn't included when purchasing one.

You can buy the slim bundled with a disc drive, right? If not, it'll be a clusterf*ck for people who just want the standard console this fall.

It was pretty sly how Sony made the transition to disc drive being an add on. It was already done by the time of the midgen update model. They are never going back now. Allows them to charge an extra $100 with less sticker shock. I think there would have been more attention and backlash if it was first introduced with a new model.

If they even offer a add on disc attachment in the future. The digital only console era has un officially started. :(

We are peas in a pod.

I am the exact target demographic for the Pro, and am likely not going to buy one. Tho could be swayed by those mega Target discounts too. But then you have to buy the peripherals which should have been included. From an objective standpoint, I can come up with all sorts of reasons why Pro will be viewed as a failure. not to mention several reasons why it rubs gamers the wrong way.
There have been prices increases across the board. service has not gotten better.

I'd like to add that if they had just included the dd and the stand that would have alleviated around half of this conversation and pushback. This Pro system will not hold its value. like a new Maserati, the minute you drive it off the lot. It's simply a very poor hardware investment. The next model will be better value and there's no way this one ages well.

I got my PS4 pro about ~9months old for $275. There's no way this thing should cost $800+. That's the cost of two full priced consoles or limited edition ones.

Honestly I would have upgraded had it had a disc drive.
yep.

For me, it's mostly about the reminder that this is not a high-quality UHD drive. A talking point that is often brought up in vg or tech comments sections. Just some weird $80 appendage with minimal integration or ability. It certainly does not do Dolby Vision.

That's the thing. 'Taking the dd out' has been nothing but a vehicle for Sony effectively charging +$100 more for new consoles. There is no benefit to us; in fact it's a double negative.

It didn't "keep costs down" for consumers at all. It raised the price of consoles one hundred bucks.

It's also a 'big dick energy' play that's pretty much calling Xbox consoles, or sales of them, dead in the near future. Almost as if they know something we don't. Sony no longer views the dd $500 XBSX as direct competition. Which is pretty wild when you think about it.

I doubt that's true. The PS5 Pro is the price it is when consoles aren't sold at a loss - this product is for enthusiasts, not the masses. When PS6 comes out, if it's $700 and the next Xbox is still $500, Sony would quickly cede ground to Microsoft. That really will be like PS3 all over again, and they'll have to wait until near the end of that console generation to regain market dominance.

I had three ps2 and at least two 360 that had disc drive failures. I would actually love to have the option to swap out drives instead of having to replace the whole unit. But I still think the Pro should have the drive included. Like others have said, Sony didn’t exactly pass the savings along to consumers when they made it optional

Edit: my BC ps3 will read blu rays and cds but not dvd, making it mostly not BC anymore. And my PS4 doesn’t seem to recognize dvd anymore either, but still does fine with blu ray
