I try to rotate between multiple consoles/devices so not a ton of hours compared to most here but I reserve the PS5 for those graphically demanding cinematic type experiences usually, especially if they are Sony exclusives.

I basically only played Tunic on my PS5 this year. A smattering of demos and quitting Tales of Arise got me to only 34 hours.

My Steam wrap up, however, will be interesting...
I can't blame you for quitting arise-ia it's hp sponge enemies and low dps suck.

Kind of weird how they split up Outer Wilds. I started playing the PSN version and didn't realize it was expiring while I was in the middle of it, so I ended up buying a copy. I guess Playstation treasts them differently.

Happy for Astro Bot. I'm in the middle of playing it right now while keeping an eye on the tga announcements. I just wish more people would realize that Rescue Mission was/is even better and that more people would play it. Maybe this award will motivate Sony to make the first game more accessible.

Indeed problem with most gamers these days is they act like graphic whores and wanting that realistic mature games and ignore the fun aspect of games. Guess Astro bot and metaphor showed them. Also I bet Nintendo is mad they didn't win like they usually do

Congrats to Astro Bot; well deserved!

And wow, I'm out of game news altogether these days but definitely did not expect there'd be a Witcher 4 trailer Knew it was in development but surprised by a trailer. Ciri looks... odd though. Also surprised to see new ND game but... super confused as to what it's supposed to be. A third person Cyberpunk-esque game?

Maybe I need to give Metaphor another try, it won over Rebirth on quite a few things and it won Gamespot's GotY (granted I think GS has been hit or miss) but that demo just didn't do anything for me.

EDIT* Damn, lots of reveals... new Ninja Gaiden, Okami sequel, new Virtua Fighter?? What year is this?!??

I thought Nintendo only won game of the year (for the game awards at least) in 2017 for BotW?

As someone that got the platinum in both. This statement is false. Astro Bot is a much better game in every way. Levels, bosses, controls, soundtrack & the Dualsense features. RR is great, but going back you realized the issues it has with the headset/DS4 tracking that messes up the controls. Especially in the challenge stages. Where you need to be perfect.

Guess I am astrobot. Played it for a few hours and its chill for sure but craving some action adventure which usually wins goty. Thought it would be between astrobot, metaphor and wu kong

Personally, I feel that Nintendo was well aware that this wouldn't be their year in terms of the TGAs, as they're saving their big guns (Metroid Prime 4, Switch II and the big game that's to come out at launch) until next year.

I can't figure out how to get rid of that 2024 wrap up banner. I know I played mostly GT7 for PSVR2 but I am surprised I didn't play other games longer than Stray. Especially some other PSVR2 games. I'm stoked I played exactly 311 hours on PS5 as 311 is one of my favorite bands!

I wasn't talking about GOTY but overall, I usually see them winning other awards like action adventure or others. Like 4 awards a year or whatever I believe. They literally had 4 games in one category with Astro and Astro won. So I was thinking they probably disppointed not winning the awards like the previous years.

Does winning any of the TGA awards actually contribute meaningfully to any of the AAA publishers? Like I can see how it might help a small studio gain greater visibility, but when an extremely high profile game like BOTW or Astrobot wins, do sales increase even remotely significantly?

What I’m saying is, why would a company like Nintendo or Sony even care if they won?

I’d imagine there’s a small bump in sales, things get overlooked by people. In fact, I’d actually bet there is quite a bit of a bump for Astro Bot, it’s somewhat of an outlier on PlayStation and this might get some new eyes on it.

When its something like Last of 2 or God of War, yeah I can’t imagine this gets them that much more attention though.

Also, I think it’s a bigger deal for the developers really. A source of pride, increases their visibility in the industry, and likely a bit more negotiating power for their next release.

My wrap up was so different this year. Only played two games (Unicorn Overlord and FFVII Rebirth) for 100+ hours each instead of my normal variety. Unicorn Overlord gets a forever place in my heart because those 100 hours came while holding my newborn asleep on me.

Sales charts for Balatro alone speak to what just a nomination can do, a single day bump to the tune of what it had released to in sales. Astrobot has sold 1.5m only, with many people actually believing this was the tech demo or having never heard of the game before. It does provide visibility but comes at the cost of (Sony) gatekeeping preventing higher sales.

I'm glad Astrobot is finally getting the recognition it deserves! GOTY! Props to that guy for recognizing how important Nintendo is to the industry and how it inspired Astrobot.
Marks the third Sony (at the time of win) exclusive and fourth console exclusive win out of ten years. Nearly half the wins being exclusive is honestly sad and the conversation this morning is not about how great the game is, but how many people wish they could understand what others are talking about. Compared to the previous two years, the celebration was far more reaching as both BG3 and Elden Ring were absolute houses.

Personally I wouldn't have cared about Astrobot regardless since platformers just annoy me now and I do feel the overall nominees were all weaker choices this year, having only reached certain crowds. I will however, be likely counted among the disappointed when Intergalactic wins GOTY in 2029 as a PS6 exclusive.

For me, owning 109 games on PS5…

I’ve played 3 games this year.

1) Hogwarts Legacy
2) Ghostwire Tokyo
3) Kena bridge of soirits

May start astrobot tonight. If I do I wonder where that will track since 2024 is nearly over. Will it track for next years gameplay?

I believe the number of hours you play in December will still count towards 2024 and the number of hours you play in January will count for 2025.

For example, if you play 50 hours of Astrobot in December and 25 hours in January, then it'll list Astrobot as the first game you played in 2025 with only 25 hours. It's not tracking the total number of in game hours but the exact number of hours played that year. That's my assumption anyways.

My 2024 Recap:

It's mind blowing to me that you played 198 games... but at the same time, what counts as "playing"? Like firing it up to the start screen or actually playing it for like X hours?

Looking again at my summary, it's kind of odd- says I played 29 games but my entire summary is on PS5 which only shows 26 games played. I'm curious why there's a discrepancy... I know I didn't fire up my PS4 at all in 2024 but I did fire my PS3 a few times due to needing to fix the disc drive.

I wonder if a lot of people are off that week between Christmas and New Year's. Seeing how much of a disaster the wrap up was when it dropped, probably does take a bit of work to get it working properly. I'd be fine with it coming out the first week of January. I've gotten 2 plats since the wrap up dropped so it's a little lame having my stats be wrong for the year.

Is there usually a end of the year sale like Xbox does? Really wanted to pick of Ratchet and Clank but they somehow didn't think that should be part of the 30th Anniversary sale lol.

I'm sure there will be more "sales" but I doubt they'll be good. I've spent so much less from the major retailers this year compared to past years... but I spent more on eBay for normal collecting level purchases I do. (So net, I'm still relatively broke.)

Just found out Astrobot has two editions now. The real one and fake one. They both have the same UPC. Real one with DLC and a poster, the spine code ends in 023. The fake edition ends in 085 if I’m correct. Be careful you collectors out there!

new years eve seems like a pretty great day to relive the last year

It really is weird how compressed time is now in the eyes of every business. Have to rush every holiday, every event, every scrap of info to be first. Then everything winds up releasing half baked and nobody is surprised.
