Nice and will they be able to actually hold games? Like the PS1 memory cards weren't large enough to hold PS2 games, will the PS2 memory cards be large enough to hold PS3 data?
Oh... no, you can't save PS3 games on PS1/2 memory cards. PS3 games are saved to the HD or can (supposedly) be saved to a one format accepted by the memory card reader (i.e., memory stick, CD, compact flash, etc.).
Here is an image of the adapter (going to run for around $15). It'll allow you to upload your PS1 and PS2 games to your PS3's HD. Then you won't need it at all as the system will use "virtual memory cards" (the HD) to allow you to save your old games.
am i the only one who thinks its kind of crazy that they have 3 diff. memory card readers, but not one of them is for the ps2?? to me, i would prefer just having ps2 reading built it, rather than those other 3

Wait, so then you can directly save/load to/from PS1/2 game to the HD?

I agree... I'm guessing those memory readers will end up being unused for the most part, just like the PS2's HD.
The memory card reader is a bit to pricey for it's single functionallity. You're better off borrowing from a friend and transferring saves because once you transfer all your info from the mem cards the device will become a dust collector. These things should be $5-7 at the most, but leave it to SONY to screw the little guy. I know $14.95 isn't bad (http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD_ID=2182972&cid=25608&fp=F ), but like I said this thing will be rarely used.
Right, the PS1/PS2 saves are then read off the HD, you won't need the adaptor afterwards unless it allows you to put some back onto the card to use on your old system or take to a friend's house.
People are always complain about choices, so as far as the prices go for this one... It seems about right to me. It works for two types of memory after all.
Hopefully you'll have other ways of getting saves on the system (internet browser downloads anyone?).
well i think the memory stick duo reader is a good idea for even better integration with the PSP. though its not really needed, it might be nice for those buying the 20GB model without WiFi to communicate with the PSP. And i like the SD card reader as well because the Wii also uses SD cards. so im hoping i can just use it in both consoles granted they dont impose some kind of propriety formating on it. i like convergance devices so i want my PS3 to do as much as possible.

I doubt there will be any formatting of the cards, as the whole idea is you can take the card out of your digital camera (or MP3 player) and plug it right into your PS3.
Chances are, the average person would only use the memory card adapter once to transfer their PS1/2 saves to the HDD since the PS3 creates a virtual PS1/2 memory "card" in the HDD during this process.
Could you connect it to your computer and save all your saves on your harddrive as backup? Then you would only need one memory card for you ps2 games and one for your ps1 games. If this works I may want to buy one and I'm not even getting a ps3.

Why? Why would you want to store Playstation 3 saves on a PS2 memory card? You've already got a hard drive built in, and can transfer saves off to tons of kinds of external storage, to archive on PC if you want to.

Umm....maybe, but not unless Sony writes Windows drivers for it. It's for the Playstation 3. Once you've got saves on you PS3, then you can copy those off to some other media to archive on your PC.
Where's that from? I haven't seen anything on Sony's site like that. It would be weird if you can't copy stuff back, although probably not a huge deal for me personally.
The PS3's manual is up? Well, that's weird. Guess it means we need to be sure we're going to switch completely to the PS3 before we copy our game saves.
Still, I'm just thrilled you CAN copy your game saves. I have all the Final Fantasy games, the Lunar games, etc. on different cards (not to mention I appreciate even moving my Street Fighter Alpha x saves. (Alpha 2 looks amazing on my new TV )
