PS3 as a DVD player...how good is it?

Well, the AVS forums say it's the = to some of the best upconverting DVD convertors out there. Don't know about dvd +/- but I would assume yes.

yes it plays all dvds r rw - + it upscales nicely, gives you a lot of features it is great and when you finall decide to upgrade you got blu ray waiting for you.

And when they are talking about the best DVD upconverters those are some really expensive DVD players.

The ps3 wont play PAL discs but my xbox 360 does... I have a lot of import DVDs so I prefer my xbox 360 ;)

I have a Samsung HD960 upconverting DVD player, and I think the PS3 works better. The only reason I use my 960 still is that it's been modified to be region/macrovision free. :)

Thanks....I should get my TV today. I have to find a truck to take it home...didn't fit in a minivan...yikes. I should've splurged for delivery.

Hell, after watching God Father 1 and 2 on the PS3 with upscaling, i stopped watching dvds using my Apex.... Interesting, all this time i haven't try a dvd-r or dvd+r disc yet, but i'll take Panasonic's words. FW 1.8 saved me $150 or so, i don't have to buy an upscaling dvd player, thanks Sony :)

Does anyone know if the PS3 can remember where you stopped watching a DVD between power cycles? i.e., watch a DVD, power off at some point during playback, then power back on and resume right from that spot. About every DVD player in the world does this, but it seems like the PS3 (just like the PS2) doesn't.

Watching the Office on my PS3 looked just like the HD version on my Moxi, so that was cool.

And Bluray is amazing... I wasnt a believer watching TalladegaNights/Xmen did not do it justice...

I watched Apocolypto on it and I was blown away... It looked so amazing. I cant believe how good it looked. And it was just on my 720/1080i tv. Wonder what it looks like on 1080p... shit...

On some DVDs however I cant really see a change. Could someone help me with what options I need to enable for it to look better? Its so confusing to me, I have a 30'' Samsung HDTV (HDMI Supported, 480i/p,720p,1080i). No idea if White whatever works...

Wondering if anyone could help me out.

I have my DVD upscaler to "double" and at 720p through HDMI. I also have the option of "letterboxed" on

When I popped in Kill Bill Vol. 1, instead of getting Widescreen, I got what looks like Pan/Scan. The whole shot seems to be surrounded by black bars. Anyone know how to fix this?

I'm just curious if I have the settings on the PS3 correct for upscaling.

1080i (through HDMI)
DVD scaler: "Normal"
Letterboxed

anything else I need to do?

I set it to Normal, or else any 4:3 content gets stretched.

That is unless you want to stretch your content, in which case set it to Full Screen.

Thanks.

I also have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI. If my LCD TV supports it, should I set the PS3 to "Full RGB" and not "Limited"?
