I'm thinking Tokyo Jungle, SkullGirls, Journey, and Dragon Fantasy Book I from the sale.  Maybe Spelunky too, since I've never played it.

So everyone here who's on board the Spelunky hype train, have you guys played it before either on PC or 360?

Just curious, because I wanted to like Spelunky but I fuck ing hated the difficulty of the game, it was just a huge turn off for me.  Not that it was just hard, but it felt unfair to me at times.

Yes, I'm finding myself trying to resist the urge to double dip on a bunch of things I have on Steam. Uuuuugggghhh, must resist!!

But I can carry in my Vita now, backlogs are always better when you can carry them on your person, it's so cuuuuute!
Yeah, that's why I'm trying not to even consider such things anymore.

PSN games will not work on PS4. I don't think sales like this are as nefarious as some assume (i'm not referring this this quote). Sony doesn't want people mad at them a few months from now when they realize none of their games will "transfer" to the PS4, but I do think they are trying to build up as much of a brand loyalty and ecosystem to help PS4 early acceptance.
I don't think it's nefarious necessarily but it's definitely annoying to be forced to keep a system because you're "stuck with" far more in games that you can't sell or play on the next one than what the console cost new.

The randomness turned me off from it. I'll wait for a sale.

I'm not sure if there is a demo on PSN, but if anyone wants to get a taste for Spelunky you can play the original PC version for free here (it's SUPER basic, so no worries if you don't have a gaming PC ;) ).

Does anyone else here have opinions on Spelunky after playing it on 360 or PC?  I'll try the demo but am curious what some CAGs think...

After reading about it, looking at review scores, and watching some gameplay videos, it definitely seems like my type of game, but what about it makes it so difficult?  I love platformers, but I almost threw my Vita across the room when playing the last couple levels of Rayman Origins on Friday (including the Land of the Livid dead area)...

The levels are randomly generated each game and when you die you restart the entire game from scratch. Each death will last anywhere from 1 to 30 minutes.

I think we should use the word nefarious far more often in every day conversation. It's such a cool word. I mean just say it out loud...nefarious...see isn't that cool?

Eldritch knows what I'm talking about. He's a cool dude lol.

Is there anything that is remotely similar to Tokyo Jungle? I have had good luck buying games that get high praise in this thread. The Gameplay videos just look so damn bizarre on that one, I do not know what to make of it.
It's a survival game, keep fed, survive predators, kill prey, level up your character, find a quality mate before you die to pass on your superior genes (a permanently unlocked +to stats starting bonus for that breed) mating is a save point, and when you come back you are now playing as one of the offspring. Survive and take over as much territory as possible before your line dies. As you progress, you unlock new animals and breeds to play as which have their own playstyle. Unlock species in free play and you can use a select number of them to play in story mode.

I have Spelunky on 360 and am excited to have it on Vita. Yes the game is super hard, but I find it funny and addicting. You die in some bitch of a way, yes, but then hitting restart is so easy and you aren't just doing the same level over and over, because of the randomness (though it follows rules and patterns). Just one more go. Maybe this time I'll get just a bit farther.... :) Each time you learn techniques to pass obstacles. It's a great pick up and play game. I think that's what will make it so perfect for the Vita.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Those words have never been used to describe me before.

Thoughts on journey getting cheaper or free on ps+ in the next couple months?
I could see it going free at some point because while it's a small title it has the name cache to be that second game if the headline game that month is weak. I don't really see it getting a whole lot cheaper than $3.75 though when it's stayed pretty consistent.

I can tell you why I wasn't too fond of Spelunky.

The levels are randomly generated, so sometimes you'll get a fairly easy few levels and sometimes you'll get absolute monsters. There are "blackout" levels which are extremely dark so that you have to carry a torch around, which means you'll have to set down whatever useful item you actually have. I hate the blackout levels more than anything else in that game. I feel like they're unfair, and I ran into one on a very good run and that was pretty much my final straw with Spelunky.

There's also a (fairly strict) time limit on each level that I really don't like either. I'd love to explore each level, take my time, and go for a couple of the good extras in each level. But you don't have time to do that. There's no sense of collecting or exploring a lot of the levels, because you'll probably die if you do that for too long. After you play 1000 games you'll know what is worth your time to explore and what isn't, but when you're just getting started the time limit really cramps down the fun.

There's really no sense of a game "save" either. I'm not sure if this is true of all roguelikes, but it definitely is in this one. There's no leveling up or upgrading anything. There's no extra heart capsules. You are equally prepared on run 1 as you are on run 1000. I find that frustrating, because I like games that give experience or leveling up of some kind. It makes me feel all my wasted death runs were at least worth something. (I compare this to a game like Scott Pilgrim, where it got really tough in the beginning, but at least every time I played and died, at least I gained some experience and money. Nothing like that in Spelunky).

There is one way to unlock future levels, but just like everything else in Spelunky, permanently unlocking the last couple worlds is ridiculously hard.

I don't really consider any of these things "faults". I'm sure they were all conscious decisions by the developer. But the game is not for me. Like I said, if Spelunky had a little bit of leveling and maybe allowed for more exploration, then I'd probably love the game. But for the game that it is, I really don't like it. I found myself not having fun with the game, so I turned it off and haven't been back since. My buy price is $3.75 and if it ever hits that price maybe I'll give it one more chance.

While I don't really recommend reading it because the game is in part about discovery, I have read some of this and it will be super helpful if you are struggling with Spelunky:

http://www.destructoid.com/spelunky-mega-guide-everything-you-need-to-know-259675.phtml

I read a little bit and found out about something I had no idea about, and that is awesome, and then I stopped. :)

Also I disagree with you Tyler, that you are just as prepared on run 1 as run 1000. As you play the game you learn techniques for getting past obstacles. It doesn't artificially "level you up". You level yourself up, in a sense. But, yes, it's probably not a game for everyone. Try the demo if you are unsure. It's great that it will have one. All PSN games should have demos.

Yes, I should have said "Your character is as equally prepared on run 1 and run 1000". You as a player will be much better prepared on run 1000 then on run 1. That's kind of the point of the game (die and die and die until you've basically perfected the game).

The lack of 'advancement' between games is pretty much true of all rogue-likes, though not true of all rogue-lites. An upcoming rogue-lite where you do advance would be Rogue Legacy (coming to vita!). However, in general, the entire point is that you start as a level 1 character in a randomized dungeon and the only difference between plays is that you, as a player, gain in experience.

So, for example, in Nethack you need to eat when you're hungry. Some things are safe to eat. Some things even have a chance to give you great/vital character traits. But the first time you eat a cockatrice will be the last time you eat a cockatrice. Did you just die, losing a couple hours of gameplay? Sure. But you learned valuable intel, and the point of the game is to play it, not necessarily 'beat' it.

Action rogue-lites (spelunky, etc) are along those lines too. While the dungeons will be random, you learn to identify certain traps, etc, and get better at navigating them.

The problem with 'leveling' up between gameplays is that it eventually 'ends' the game. Your level 100 character will trounce through the dungeon and kill the boss. Big deal. The heart of the gameplay is surviving till you have that level 100 character decked out in fancy gear... and yes, it sucks when you're level 99 and get petrified by accident... but thems the breaks.

I know some people can't handle permadeath. But for me, it's the absolute best thing about rogue-likes/lites. (assuming a well designed, well balanced game, of course).

YOU SO KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!

That was actually the longest, most thought out post about why someone dislikes a game I've seen in quite awhile haha.
Haha thanks. I've perfected it over the months every time Spelunky comes up in the XBL thread.

I'm not trying to put the game down too much. I actually love the art style. I just want to emphasize that it's not a game for everyone. For me, it's the hardest game I've played in a long time. And to me, that difficulty is extra frustrating due to the randomized levels. It takes a masochist to beat and enjoy Spelunky in my opinion.

Yeah, I have Dragon Fantasy langouring on my iPhone, but I'll switch it over to Vita for that price - and maybe actually play it someday! Dyad and Journey are also a must-buy at that price, and I'm pretty close to jumping on Tokyo Jungle as well.
dragon book for me.. would grab more if more was on the vita.

Yeah man I hear ya...they just keep pissing on the poor device. :(
they are now pooing on it now since They got a nasty shock last time weeing on it when it was plugged in :)

just saying would loved to seen more of those games ported over to the vita.

one bad thing i can see about the dragon book deal.

One way you could have people buy it at 2.50 and get hooked on it and want to buy book 2 in 2 weeks.

another way you can turn people off saying Why buy book 2 at full price when it will be 50 to 75% off in the future (i will be buying book 1 tomorrow and then book 2 come Sept 10)

I've recently been hoping to myself that Tokyo Jungle would get a sale, and here it is.  Nice.  I sold off my gameshare of it last year, but have recently been getting an itch to play it again.

I think putting the old game on sale before the new one comes out soon is a pretty solid strategy. You'll get people in cheap with the first one. Then the goal is for people to want more of the series and not want to wait longer so BAM book 2 release right there.

I don't think it's nefarious necessarily but it's definitely annoying to be forced to keep a system because you're "stuck with" far more in games that you can't sell or play on the next one than what the console cost new.
It's really annoying that I have a console with so many games on it that I don't want to throw it in the trash as soon as a PS4 is out. Sorry, but that post seems like such a first-world gamer complaint.

Wow, way to go new message boards. Showed I double posted so I hid one of the messages and now both are gone. Had commented on how I can now tell Joker from affa, hemi, and the rest of the no avatars.

they are now pooing on it now since They got a nasty shock last time weeing on it when it was plugged in :)

just saying would loved to seen more of those games ported over to the vita.

one bad thing i can see about the dragon book deal.

Who are you and what have you done with slidecage?! That's by far the most punctuation I've ever seen in on of "your" "posts".

Well being able to buy and play games is a pretty first world thing so yeah.

I love beating that Limbo level in the darkness where you have to rely on sound. makes you feel so hardcore. lol

still havn't beat limbo without losing a life tho. that seems crazy hard.

I haven't touched my Vita in over a month (Silent Hill was terrible and now I haven't wanted to go back, but maybe I will eventually...), but I am thinking of getting Dragon Fantasy. For 2.50, I'll bite. Kind of tempted at Journey and Tokyo Jungle, but I think I can wait on those to drop some more, I don't have the interest or time.

i dont think i have touched my vita in a month or two. I have turned it on to buy downloads but have not played it due to the 3ds major game line up

shin 4 then mario dream team thing.

Nice thing is once my gamefly is up the backlog on my vita will last me 6 months to a year. Though i may have to turn on my vita this week since i just got walking dead on the vita from gamefly.

I apologize in advance for the totally n00b question:

Is it normal that when I bought Guacamelee! (PS+ price), I had the playable demo (~600MB), "full game unlock" (6KB), and Vita version (~350MB, this one I expected) to download? I just find it a little weird that the version on my XMB says Guacamelee! Playable Demo when it should be the full game, right?

you download the unlock, start up the game and it will become the full version and won't say trial/demo anymore...

i would think...

and i just spent like $40 on vita games in past 2 weeks, even just soul sacrifice and muramasa rebirth were huge backlog additions. i skipped new lil king story cuz hoping ps+ freebie and dynasty warriors next cuz idk. also got blood dragon and guacamelee cuz those seem like must buys especially at these prices. now watch them go ps+ soon, lol, that's life.

Exactly. I was all about jumping right into SS but instead it's Guacamelee and Atelier Totori that are getting played.

Off topic but anyone else curious to what NA PSPlus users will get after that announcement for EU Plus users? Am I stupid to hope we will get the same( or comparable) as the EU plus?

I'm playing muramasa right now and I'm loving it. I'm in the midst of playing dragons crown too. So much vanillaware! But for real everyone pick up muramasa. Digital or physical.

Funny thing about Spelunky and its difficulty is that generally speaking I do not like very difficult games, yet I love Spelunky which is definitely one of the more difficult games out there.

After watching the Dragon Fantasy video a bit, not sure that's for me. I can't stand pop up battles. So irritating.

i know. id been digging some odin sphere type action and now im inundated with dragon's crown and muramasa rebirth.

they are always a lil clunky/menu heavy, but such great artwork and i love the gameplay/grindy/loot ness of them.

i also love being a lil late to the party cuz right when i started dragon's crown they updated the game the next day so now you just have to highlight the sparkles and treasures pops out so not so much L1 clicking all over and now L1 is another shortcut key, etc.

also all the free dlc for soul sacrifice. being late is good sometimes.

but omg, i still have to play MAG/Socom before they turn off the servers. i said that last month, at this rate ill be lucky to get 50% of the trophies. and i have the MAG free dlcs from way back ps+ so i should at least try to turn off blops 2 and play some other fps games before they are turned off...

off tangent but talking about pop up battles, i watched the good the bad and the ugly (1am-4:30 am, extended edition, no commercials, omg) and they had that music that wild arms stole and it super triggered my nostalgia for the game but then i remembered all the random battles and that turned me off. i need to find a rom or something for wild arms without random battles, lol, altho then you could probly not fight any bosses, idk...zone, super dork moment. also super cool movie. Clint Eastwood and Lee von Cleff or whatever)

Oh man, I bought MAG for a dollar and just keep putting off even trying it and saying the same thing. Worst part is that I bought it when I had just gotten the PS3 back in May and only had three or four other games, nothing on PC really taking up my time and still failed to play it.

SS is fun, but it definitely isn't a MUST PLAY type of game. I found some things that annoy the crap out of me with the game, so I barely touch it.
Yeah SS was good but not great in my opinion. I bet it's WAY better online with friends or randoms. But I bought it used (not realizing it had an online pass) so I never got to check out the MP.

You're not stupid to hope we get some of that stuff, you're just a bit naive. On a same-month basis, it seems that the EU and NA content rarely overlaps anymore. Once in a while we'll get a good big game a couple months after EU gets it, but that's about it.
