PSP second thoughts?

Well, I was lucky enough to try a pre-release of the PSP a few days ago. I was truly amazed. Totally amazing graphics and a breath-taking frame rate. Plenty of games coming out at release time, as well as movies. Another cool thing is the memory stick feature. You can download videos, mp3's etc, onto the memory stick via USB outlet on the PSP, and play them on the unit. If you have mpeg4 files, it can play those, so you can download/rip/convert movies, put them on the stick, then watch them on the go! The feel of the whole unit is amazing, from the buttons, to the extremely comfortable joystick. I simply cannot wait until I have an income so I can buy this!!!!
Couldn't pay me to buy first gen of this hardware.
Well in order to do that someone would have to be willing to pay you more than the price of the PSP itself ($250) and then make it worth your while with a signifigant increase (Let's say an extra $250) At this price it generally wouldn't be worth anyone's cash to ask you to buy a product you're dead set against buying in it's current itteration as you probably wouldn't play it in public or attempt to convince others to buy it making you useless as a marketing entity which is the only reason you WOULD be paid to buy it, so yes you're right, You couldn't be paid to buy the system because no one would pay you anyway.

It's only logical.

...and yes, I did have too much time on my hands to figure that out.
It's a shame that alot of PSP games have good gameplay as well! oh noes!
And you've played enough of them to know.

Right now, I think the PSP has a lot of momentum due to the wow factor. There's only two launch games that interest me at all: Lumines and Metal Gear Acid. And I don't know if I'd even necessarily like MGA. There are other games coming, but they don't offer me a one-of-a-kind experience; I've played plenty of Twisted Metal and Wipeout in the past. Maybe when the prices drop I'll get them - they certainly look fun enough - but, for now, I'm personally looking for new and interesting gameplay.

If you're having any doubts, I, too, suggest to wait. My opinions on the PSP have swayed back and forth for a while now. It'll be a pretty machine, but I don't know how much it would hold my attention. I, for one, will wait for a price drop and a better battery before I invest. Also, for a budget line of games, since I don't clock in nearly as much time into my handhelds as I do into my consoles, thus I don't see $40-50 as being a price I'll pay for PSP games.

I'm looking forward to getting one ASAP. I'm ready for a new toy, and hell, I don't even have an MP3 player. I traded in 24 games at EB during that $10 bonus offer so I am ready to rock out with my PSP out!
If you're not sure yet, give it time.

The DS and PSP have yet to prove themselves. It took a while for the GBA to get off the ground and for its more amazing titles to start appearing, just as it's taken almost every console to date time to shine.

In a year from now, the PSP could have dropped to N-Gage level failure...but so could the DS. Give it time, and see what titles appear for them. That's all we can do at this point.
The DS and PSP are both already much more successful than N-gage just in Japan alone. N-gage only recently got up to 1.5 million units sold and the software sales haven't exactly topped the charts. By comparison, both DS and PSP are far ahead in units sales less than six months after their launches, and games for each have charted well. If sales of DS and PSP hardware and software ended tomorrow they'd still be ahead of the N-gage a year from now.

I'm holding off as well. I will be picking up a copy of Lumines though, just to have. I don't know what other stores are like, but Toys "R" Us is only getting 6,000 copies. I don't want to have to do a Rez-stlye hunt down by the time the PSP drops to a price I'm willing to pay.

I keep going back and forth with getting this...mainly because I'm wondering if my $300 (PSP value pack + Spider-Man 2) in EB credit could be spent better elsewhere. I'm sure I will like the PSP it's just I can't help but think how I could get 3 gamecubes or 2 PS2's for what I am spending (well actually I'm not spending anything as it is free after the TRU\EB deal) but still. Anyone else having second thoughts?

It does upset me that the controls suck for Darkstalkers...meaning they will stink for all fighters. Plus most of these games are something I have played before.
I'd have second thoughts too if Spider-man 2 was the only game I was getting with my PSP. There's like ten games out that are way better than that.
Well it's actually all opinion really anyway. I like action games and the Spider-Man games are always a top choice for me. I'm a sucker for the character. The rest of the launch games are racing which I don't like, sports which I like and play but wouldn't spend $50 on when I can get it for $5 or less if I wait a year, or darkstalkers which the controls supposedly suck for fighting games (multiple reviews IGN, 1UP). I'm not intrested in Lumines either. I wish Hot Shots was coming out on launch because I would grab that. The only other game I am considering is THUG.

EDIT: Ape Escape is a good game but probably won't be as much fun without dual analog controls.

From the TRU thread, my thoughts on it..
The PSP, to me, at first, is going to be a lot like a hooker. You'll be drunk (temptation), she (it) will look good, you go home with it, but after you wake up the next morning bored of the third Sony launch that had Ridge Racer and Wipeout titles, you'll regret it.

I'm waiting.. last thing I need is a Sony hangover :)

Eh, if you're having second thoughts, then just wait awhile. You have to remember that the graphics will only have that "wow-factor" for a short while after you buy it. There are new games that are coming out for the current generation of consoles that look great, but how often do you look at your xbox game and say "wow, these are great graphics!" And yeah, they are, but we've all gotten used to them.

Well good 3D graphics are finally making their way to the handheld arena, and everybody is wetting themselves over them. That'll be the norm for a few months, and then when everybody gets used to the graphics and the general newness of the PSP, the importance of gameplay will start to reemerge.

When you get a new console (handheld or otherwise), that's all you'll play for a good while. But after you've seen all that it can do, you'll fall back into your normal gaming habits. If you're anything like me, you'll gravitate towards playing good games, regardless of the system they're on. If you see a bunch of games that interest you for the PSP (completely disregarding graphics), then go ahead. But if the only thing pushing you towards the PSP is the flashy graphics and sexy design, then wait on it.

Graphics get outdated, and quickly. Good gameplay does not.

Well said. Ultimately, it all comes down to games and gameplay -- not graphics. How else could GameBoy games have sold-through so well for so very, very long?

Sony has designed itself a sexy little system, but once the initial "wow" factor fades, it will come down to innovative, fun games -- something Nintendo has arguably proved best at. If Sony and its developers can meet the Big N head on, with genuine innovation, it could rule the portable world.

The reality of Sony's $40 and $50 games will also soon take the luster of an otherwise seemingly unstoppable PSP.

Sony may have never really done it themselves, but they've always managed to woo third parties to creating the best and brightest franchises exclusively or semi-exclusively for their consoles. Right now, to me, the PSP seems too iffy. Probably in about a year or two (hopefully when I can get a non-bundle PSP for $100-150...though I won't hold my breath on that wish), the PSP will start having really innovative and fun games.

I think that is a loaded comment, you're saying because of one game that was obviously rushed for launch...that all games of that genre are gonna suck control-wise? The ridiculous...

And you've played alot of these games before....but I've play Mario 64, Ridge Racer, Rayman 8 Years ago. I'm ahead of the times!
