Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread X(Ten)

First off, let me welcome you all to the new guide thread. Second, I'd like to ask you all to please keep conversations not pertaining to guide drops to a minimum to avoid cluttering the thread. It's not that I don't enjoy the chit chat, but that it may stop others from locating information on the newest drops.

That being said, let me thank Cheapy for creating this site, without which I would've spent probably 10 times what I HAVE spent on games and guides. Moreover, let me thank each and every one of my fellow CAGs for continuing to contribute to making this site a great place to find out about sales and clearances of the items we as gamers use most. Without a great community, NONE of this would be possible.

Furthermore, I would like to thank our Wiki editors HeatDolphin and Rocko for updating the Wiki. Great job.

Now, with that out of the way(and before I get to rambling), let's get on to making this new thread.

What is the purpose of this thread?

The purpose of this thread is to let our fellow CAGs know when a guide has dropped to a low price(it's NOT ALWAYS A PENNY), so they can go out and grab guides for themselves and for trading with other CAGs.

Anytime you have guide drops to report, post them here. Please specify at which store you found them and which guides you found and list them in alphabetical order. Thank you. Please, whenever possible, use RED font to make the drop info stand out. Thanks again.

What are penny guides?

Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them. At that time, they are also marked as .01 in their inventory system, except in the case of BBV, which marks them .01 only AFTER pulling them.

Most stores have an agreement with the publisher that states that if they destroy the remaining stock of those items, they will receive a credit for their value from the publisher. This is why many stores are usually annoyed when we CAGs come in and buy the guides AT the penny price, since otherwise they would've received a full credit for those items.

According to an employee at a local BB, they also have a recycling program for the pennied stock, so as to not clutter landfill space with the guides. As to how true it is, I cannot confirm, but I would hope that the paper is at least recycled instead of just dumpstered.

Thanks to floormat, Guinavere and anyone else who has created and maintained the guide thread before, as well as to all of those who find out either advance information on drops or provide a list of which ones dropped when we do have a drop.

The post below this one contains a list going back at LEAST six months of the more current guide drops, which stores they occured at and which ones dropped. Note that sometimes(Oblivion guide, Quake Wars: Enemy Territory)there are multiple versions of a guide, be it that there are Prima versions, Brady versions and the occasional Nintendo and Doublejump guides.

Please specify WHICH version has dropped when mentioning possible guide drops. Thank you.

Common Guide Drop Related Questions(FAQ):

FAQ - If you are new (or a vet with a few questions) look here SECOND! (After reading the above!)

Q: What Are Penny Guides?
A: Penny guides are guides which have been on the market for a while and the publisher(or store chain) decide that the remaining stock of these guides have little to no chance of selling, so they issue an order to pull them from the shelves and destroy them.

Q: Do all guides from all stores drop at the same time?
A: No. While most chains have nationwide drops within their own store (as in every BB will have the same drops coast to coast), not every different chain drops at the same time (what drops at BB is NOT necessarily dropped at GS). When in doubt, check post TWO for drop info.

Q: I found a penny guide and a clerk denied me! I'ma report 'em!
A: Whoa, hold your horses there, pardner! First of all, not a question. Second, just because something is on the shelf, the clerk does NOT have to sell you that item. Most stores are PRIVATE property and as such can deny you just about anything they want - including a sale. The best advice is to not be rude, not be arrogant, and just try hard to get them to have pity on you.

Q: Why don't the clerks want to sell me their penny guides? Aren't they just throwing them away?
A: As stated above, the stores are ordered by the publisher to trash the guides, and are then given credit for those guides. If they don't do this, the publisher won't give them the credit - it's like losing a sale. On the employee level, selling a penny guide can sometimes get them in trouble (or even fired!) I know it seems silly, but this is their job we're talking about! Respect the man (or woman) behind the counter and you'll get a lot more guides than otherwise!

Q: Should I just ask if the store has penny guides then?
A: No, since that denotes that you have some insider information as to the runnings of these businesses.

Q: What if the clerk wants to know how I know so much about guide drops?
A: If asked where you got your info about guides that pennied, simply say either 'the internet' or 'a friend of mine told me they're on clearance'.

Q: But clerks will know what a penny guide is, right? I can talk to them like anyone else here...
A: Never use the word pennied to ANY store clerks unless you have built up a good rapport with them. Even then, it may seem a little fishy if you know more about their shop than they do.

Q: Are guides labeled as a penny on the shelf?

A: Sometimes. Most times, no. GS seems to label everything that gets a price drop, so often times guides will be stickered. But even so, they most likely won't sell them to you. A sticker does not mean 'have to sell'.

Q: I tried to buy a guide that this thread said was pennied and it didn't ring up as such! What gives?
A: Either 1) Our source was wrong (this rarely happens and is usually verified a FEW times within maybe an hour of posting), or 2) The clerk changed the price. It's usually number 2.

Q: What's the easiest way to get penny guides? This sounds like TONS of work!
A: Best Buy is probably the best place to get guides, followed by GameStop, GameCrazy, Toys R Us and then Blockbuster. From what I've seen though, probably 95% of guides that people get are snagged at BB - the rest come from the other stores. But it never hurts to try!

Q: Has there been a drop recently?
A: If you are asking this question you didn't fully understand the OP - go back and read it once more. When a drop happens, it will be posted, and then placed in the second post - trust us.

Q: How do you guys know so much about penny guides?
A: We sometimes have inside sources with the information from the stores themselves; other times, fellow CAGS just like you or me simply take suspected guides to the register and ask them to ring them up, to check their prices. Feel free to do this yourself, and help give back to the community by telling us what you find! However, DON'T ask "Has anyone checked XXX lately?", unless you are in the right thread (discussion area).

Thanks to GrilledWitOnions for creating the above FAQ, which should eliminate the need for such questions popping up in the thread from this point on out.

It's cool! Just forgot to put some smiley's in my last post.

Totally got guide blocked at GS yesterday. Tried to pick up X-Men Origins: Wolverine, LBP, Killzone 2, and Last Remnant, they price adjusted them so they would've been full price. I ended up saying no thanks, I only had two of those games right now, anyways. They also had BioShock, but they went and started price checking them all after they realized the ones I tried to pick up were pennied.

You have to love it when Gamestop employees are lazy and don't do their jobs (it has been a week after all since the drops).

The local GS stores are pretty good about pulling them anymore, so I don't even try most times around here now. Even when I do find one that's dropped, unless it's at the one specific store I know I'm going to get blocked or they're going to mangle them by ripping the cover off and saying 'here ya go' after they tear the shit out of the guide.

Mind ya, a free guide is a free guide since you use the info IN the guide and not the cover, but I know how AR most are(including me) about getting good condition guides and no cover=/=good condition.

The Palisades Mall BBY in West Nyack, New York has a bunch of Gears of War 2 and Zeldas left. They had 1 LBP guide, but I picked it up. They might have more as they were very unorganized.

^lol, at this point it wouldn't be "goodluck" - it would be Charliefindingthegoldenticket luck. But have fun.

I do prefer to get my guides in great condition, too. Here, I would totally take them ripped. I just wish they weren't pulled or being made full price the last three times I've gone out to pick some up. It's like I can't catch a break in Kansas. I was making a killing in Tennessee, though.

Really? Ripping the cover? WTF.

It's actually a pretty normal thing. Kmart always did it with all the books that were pennied out.

I just tried to buy 3 guides from Gamestop. LBP, KZ2, and Lost & Damned. I took them to the register, the guy scanned them and then said "hold on a second, I need to check with my manager about this." He came back and told me.. "I can't sell these to you.. it's against the law." I then asked him what 'law' I was breaking and he just stumbled around with words. I asked to speak with the manager he asked this with, and that manager told me the reason he can't sell them to me is a "Loss Prevention Issue".

What in the fuck? Anyone had these random excuses blocking you from buying a $0.01 guide?

Yeah, excuses run the gamut, but at the end of the day, the stores don't have to sell them for any reason. I don't know why some of the stores feel like they have to make stuff up. A simple "we can't sell penny guides" should suffice, but they feel the need to ad-lib sometimes. It sucks that you struck out, but that's how it goes with penny guides.

It's so insulting. Just be straight with me and we'll all be fine.

I hate when people think you're stupid.

By the way, a ripped cover is how they get credit for a "destroyed guide".

Actually, it is a loss prevention issue. When they sell the guides for a penny, they don't get the money from the publisher. Sure, loss prevention makes it sound like theft when it is not, but that is being a little more up front than "You have to buy the game to get it for a penny," which is just a lie.

I don't understand. If someone comes in, heads straight to the guide rack, and picks up three guides that have pennied, that person obviously knows about the system, and therefore also knows that the stores don't have to sell the guides. So why do employees need to BS answers. If he said, "We can't sell it to you." I would be fine since I know that is always a looming possibility.

I know that I would much rather have been told that they couldn't sell them to me than just having the price jacked up. That's annoying. Expecially when I see it ring up for a penny.

Has anyone ever tried leaving a penny on the counter and walking out with one? :p

Not like it's stealing since you paid them for what it rings up as.

Never, because that has almost never ended well from what I've seen.

Something about that still rings up as stealing to me though. I know what your trying to do, but they have no clue about it. If someone stops you, you have no receipt, no proof.

Not that I'm endorsing doing it, but they do have cameras in the stores to back you up.

One hell of a hassle for a penny guide though.

Back what up? You still didn't pay what you were asked to pay.

Now that the absurd $24.99 price seems to be standard for guides, it's seeming more and more worth it.

I'd buy both Borderlands and Brutal Legend's guides if the total for those two wasn't more than I've spent on any one game in some time.

You would think with most people going to the net for questions in games and low sales on the now $20-24.99 guides they would lower the prices... guides arent any more fancy then they were say 10 years ago so there is no justifying the hike in price..

To me when the Guides go to $9.99 thats a good price and if its one I really want I dont have any issues paying that but $19.99+ is the Price of a game so come on go with a universal pricing of $9.99 for standard and lets say $14.99 for hardcover and such !!!!
Fable II is $10 at Gamestop. Not sure if it's a permanent drop or just a sale, but it's something.
I would totally get it if I had not bled that game dry. I ended up just printing out a guide for the last ten gargoyles I needed.

I have to agree with this. You would think with the advent of the internet that prices would go DOWN and not up, since most of the crap in the guides is readily available on many sites.

Back when I was still paying full price for guides though, many of them were around $9.99 to $14.99. How they determined that the prices needed to go UP is beyond me, since the majority of guides I see sit on store shelves till they penny most times.

I mean, who the hell is going to pay $25 for a guide, when they could have a game for the same price?

Hopefully my luck will continue with the two local BB stores and I'll be able to get whatever ones I want and a couple extras for trade fodder. As for GS, I'll have to wait till I go out of town again since pretty much every local GS store is a dead zone for me anymore.

Ha ha if it wasnt for Bestbuy I would never get penny guides seeing I was cock blocked at Blockbuster and all EB/GS and a few times at Gamexrazy but thats closed now...

Best Buy is also my main source for penny guides. I did okay on the last drop, but they were more strict on the last couple. I hope the next one goes okay.

Any guides a likely candidate for a drop tomorrow? Just wondering so I can figure out if I have to head out that way.

Unless they changed it from the 3rd monday back to the 1st mondayt, then there won't be any drops tomorrow at BB.
Unless they changed it from the 3rd monday back to the 1st mondayt, then there won't be any drops tomorrow at BB.
I'll go one further and predict that there won't be another drop until February.

I can check one today at lunchtime, but I doubt it had dropped previously as every BB still has copies including the stores that pull them consistently. Remember, these guides can be removed from the website for some time before they actually drop.
I think Prototype dropped to a penny in BB as it is not online anymore.

Any BB employees can confirm?
Prototype's never been on the web site, strangely.

I'll check later on to be sure though.
I'll go one further and predict that there won't be another drop until February.
yeah, historically there haven't drops ~ this time of year, but then come Feb. there is a massive, "so beautiful it brings tears to your eyes" drop.
Prototype's never been on the web site, strangely.

I checked and it is still full price. I did pick up one copy of street fighter 4 though.

I don't think Prototype dropped during the last drop, a BB near me stickered all pennied guides as $0.01 and did not sticker Prototype as such. If it dropped, it would be a new drop. Pretty sure all BB drops are on the third Monday of each month now, but after such a massive drop it may be a while before we see anything new from BB.
Confirming that Prototype did not penny. Also got a papercut from a Modern Warfare 2 guide.
Thanks, loxy.
I bet people just snaggin alot of copie's
Nah, a pennied SF4 guide won't last 2 weeks, even if people are "snaggin" just 1.

Had my first sucsessful find and purchase at a Game stop in Torrington CT. I got
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts
Fallout 3:Broken Steel/Point Lookout
The 2 cashier were really cool about and did give me any issues.

Found a gamecrazy with too many guides, but none where ringing for a penny. They even had the lego star wars guide and all of them where $9.99. MGS4 hardcover was $15 and Madden 09 bundle $35

since more and more people are turning to the net print runs get smaller and smaller resulting in higher prices.

After many months I scored my first few penny guides. Three Fallout and one Gears of War 2. Yea!
