Hey CAG Folk.

Went out shopping for bargains (wanted a Blu-Ray player for the 'rents) and saw in the bargain bin at my local Best Buy the PC game Risen.

Risen was previously on sale over the holidays on Steam for $14.99, but the Steam version contains TAGES 3 Time Activation DRM.

Amazon lists the game for $17.99 or in that area.

I picked it up discounted down to $11.99. Thought I'd share, better call before you go however since it was a "penned on" price mark down.

Keep on saving money!

I bought the game on Steam for $15 during the holidays. The game is actually pretty great, especially if you liked Gothic 1 or 2. The problem people have with it (which I think is justified to a small degree, at least early on) is that the combat starts off tough. I didn't have that hard a time with it since the fundamentals of combat are based on dodging and side-stepping then carefully counter-attacking. I got pretty far so far by taking my time and not aggro'ing creatures until I was ready to take them down. Later on you learn more techniques and spells which help a lot.

So, for this price I say it's at least worth a try. The graphics are really beautiful and there's lots to do and explore.

If you hated ME and ES, then you probably don't like video games, so therefore the answer is no.

no, it's called to each his own. i generally don't like WRPG because the story isn't as emphasized comapred to a straight forward Japanese one.

it's the sacrifice of having choices, just can't make it as strong, for most part, when there are different angles involved versus a single.

I mainly play RPGs for story, if I wanted sword play and stuff, i.e. action, i'll just buy something like Call of Duty or something.

You might want to give ME another try - it's very story driven IMO.

I did play ME1 twice to get two different story, and partially of ME2. Just couldn't get into the story, again, it's my fault for comparing between a JRPG / WRPG, But I just look at story for RPG games since Gameplays are not exactly mind blowing and I find the free choice (not just WRPG, but free-scenario JRPG too) lacking in the story department and/or not as dramatized. The only free-scenario I have liken to date is Fallout 3 (haven't touched New Vegas yet), Romancing Saga 2. I think both of them due to its starting atmosphere (the initial grasp)

Thanks , OP. I have been wanting a PC copy of this for a while and will check it out this weekend since I will be in the vicinity of a BestBuy.

Like you said, to each his own, but I think you are crazy to say a game like Mass Effect is not a story driven game. I found myself playing through it just to see what would happen. Being able to make conversation choices certainly did not detract from that. I was also reading through codex entries to find out more about all the interesting concepts , races, etc in the game. I've purchased and read through some of the novels, wanting to know more. It is one of the most fully realized worlds that I have ever had the pleasure of playing through in a videogame. You may not spend 75% of your playtime listening to meaningless conversations, but the story is strong. A quality over quantity thing. And I am generally not a fan of the sci-fi genre, but it still hooked me.

Your run of the mill JRPG plot to me, however, is a nonsensical pile of cliche riddled rubbish geared toward a much younger audience - which was fine 15 years ago when I fell into that age group and played them. They have not evolved and grown up with me over the years, however.

If you dug Fallout 3, then go for Oblivion and keep an eye on Skyrim. Same developers at the helm.

For you, I'd steer clear of Risen. It is very action and combat intensive, and the story is rather vague and develops slowly. I kept wonder "what the heck am I doing?" for a very long time while playing and the world isn't well realized.

That said, I am a fan of the game and have enjoyed playing it so far (just about to finish Chapter 1 after doing most of the side quests). Worth a look for someone interested in, or at least tolerant of, European RPGs.

Risen PC is really good - and definitely PC's best RPG since the original Gothic, if you ask me. I got it a bit ago from Steam, when it was $15 some time back.

Most definitely worth the $11.99 on disc.

Just one thing: the game can be brutally hard, at times. I am on Chapter 4 - and yeah, it ain't an easy game.

Be aware that this game has game breaking bugs that are easily solved on the PC but are absolutely unforgivable on 360. I wish I'd played this on PC instead of 360 because 40 hours in I got stranded with no way to beat the game.

The game neglects to tell you that Levitation scrolls are a limited resource, which are vital to getting into three of the four final temples. I got through two temples only to find out there is no levitation scrolls left in my entire game world. It's absolutely retarded that the devs made something like that a finite resource and the experience has convinced me to stay away from any and all Eastern European RPGs. The game left me feeling like I just threw away 40 hours of my life.

I ran into zero bugs on the 360.

Also, there are far fewer times you need to use the levitation scrolls than there are actual scrolls in the game. The devs probably figured people weren't retarded enough to burn them for no reason.

Beat the 360 version mainly for the achievements but it isn't really something I would want to play again. To me it felt like more of an adventure game with RPG elements than a full RPG. Very linear and limited character customization, combat was pretty dull and little in the way of loot. In fact your best weapon is probably your fists. But I didn't run into any bugs either, seemed pretty polished to me in that regard.

Interesting...he complains about a problem he faced on the 360 version, and your solution is to give him a PC code. :applause:

On the PC version, when doing the Temple runs w/ Mendoza and his crew in Chapters 3 and 4, I forget which one it was, but there is someone there you can talk to for buying Levitation scrolls, Nautilus scrolls, potions, and other stuff from.

You do realize those codes work both on the xbox and PC right...Wonder who is clapping now realizing he did not read the wiki more.

I picked this up at Gamestop for $9.99 a few months back. The digital copy is still that price so if you can find one in-store it should be the same too.
