Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

To be honest I really dislike these types of bodies on guitars. Reminds me of the Xplorer. Feels like it's trying too hard to look cool. I prefer a classic look. Let your skills do the talking, not the look of your axe.
I hate the look of that guitar, but the explorer is up there as one of my favorite guitars. I find them very comfortable. For me though, I'll always pick up an explorer or Flying V over a les Paul or strat. Just more comfortable to me, whether sitting or standing.

Linkin Park DLC today. 5 pack - 3 Drop D and 2 Eb Drop Db or whatever it is songs... I was a big fan of their first 3 albums and 4 of the songs are from those, so I'm just gonna get the pack.

So here's a question, how long did it actually take some of you to get to a point where you yourself thought you were good?

It's all relative.  I'm good... compared to where I had started.  But still don't consider myself a musician.

The game is great at improving your physical skills, using a guitar.  But grossly lacking in the theory department.

In other words, you've got this kick-@ss 4k LED tv with a 100"screen, but you're watching an old VHS tape on it.

Ubi's really gotta crank up the theory lessons with the next version

Noticed that the Rocksmith (OG) Import Pack was up on PS4 this past weekend.
Bout time, man.

XB1's s'posed to be up now (or soon), too .. along with new patches for both.

Here's what's new:

PS4
- Improved note detection (should be on par with previous consoles)
- Songs now suggest whether a bass part should be played with a pick or played with fingers.

XBOX ONE
- Improved note detection (should be on par with previous consoles)
- Songs bought as Packs on Xbox One should now show up as owned in the Songs list in the in-game Shop.
- Import pack should now be selectable via in-game Shop (but only to users who are also verified owners of the original 2011 Rocksmith).
- Cleaned up a few things in the Shop’s song titles.

We have heard the various feedback about dodgy note detection, so the team investigated and we think we've made a major improvement in this area. So for those of you who have been experiencing this issue, please let us know what it's like for you post-patch. Thanks.

The X1 patch actually does not fix the issue with your DLC being available. It just makes it so that any pack you purchased on the X1 (Hendrix, for example) now has the single songs show up with the green purchased check in the in game store.

Dan says that he talked to someone at MS that is unraveling the DLC permissions issues, but he has no ETA on a fix. I have had no string detection issues (I have a couple of 105% completions on the X1).

Enumeration of DLC still sucks. Took me 3 or 4 minute tonight post patch.

Has anyone purchased the Tom Petty pack? If so, how is it? I'm either going to pick up the TP or the Sublime pack.

Last edited by a moderator:
I have, but I'm a bad judge of the pack. I'm a HUGE Tom Petty fan (as in - own most everything including DVDs, Blus, books, box sets, etc.). Therefore, I think the pack is amazing.

Songs are easy to medium. Nothing as hard as "Good Enough" off the first Rocksmith.

Ugh.. still more waiting on packs I should already own. At least the import pack will work now. I've been dying to get into some of those songs lately, especially now that I bought a bass.

And yeah, enumerating in the store as well as learn a song is balls. I have to back out of learn a song sometimes to get things to show up. Poor design if you ask me. How is it that the thing worked perfectly in the last gen version but not this gen? I thought this was a direct port. What went wrong?

So here's a question, how long did it actually take some of you to get to a point where you yourself thought you were good?
I don't consider myself all that good, but compared to where I was, I would say very good. It's improved my skills a lot, especially with being able to see a note and to actually play it. Before I was lost on the fretboard. I had sloppy movement/techniques and I was slow. I still have trouble with notes that show up super fast that I've never seen before but overall I can actually play pretty much anything the game throws at me. It's improved my dexterity a lot.

Does this game help you? Hell yeah. It really does. But it should be a supplement. It should help with your muscle memory and practice. You should still go outside of it and learn songs from tabs or try to write your own stuff if you plan on becoming "good."

Also, I should mention when I first got the original 2011 game, it was interesting and fun for all of about a week before I didn't like it because I simply couldn't play. Being able to actually improve makes this game a whole lot more fun and it's kept me more interested than I ever would've been with something as frustrating as guitar. If you're having trouble keep with it. It will be a lot of fun later on, trust me.

Has anyone purchased the Tom Petty pack? If so, how is it? I'm either going to pick up the TP or the Sublime pack.
Only got Free Fallin but it's a fun little track. Not difficult, just chords. It's fun to play, but you have to be a fan of TP to enjoy the songs. Same as any other pack really. Use your judgment. What do you like more?

Thanks for the replies. I really like the TP tracks. Three of them are in my top 5 favorite TP tracks. Hopefully, we'll get another pack. There are so many great songs the can be added. I can already play two of the Sublime songs. I wish there were more tracks from 40oz. I'm going to get the TP pack now and wait on Sublime. That and the Hendrix pack should keep me busy for a bit.

Bought a Ibanez Gio Bass over the new years for $119 used.

I haven't played in a while, and well lets just say my fingers are blistered up. It's a good thing though. I am having fun, minus blisters which are currently trying to heal, lol. I am enjoying bass more than guitar and I feel I am learning better.

Bass is nice enough, sounds good.

Yes bass is fun and easy compared to guitar. Its good for a break when your fingers are getting tired or as a warm up before diving into lead guitar.

If you're a fan, get the White Stripes pack. I got it and I'm having a blast. Intermediate type songs, not too difficult, but very catchy. Only 3 of them have bass support though so be warned.

I'm not too interested in The White Stripes.

1/13 DLC : Soundgarden 5-Pack, $11.99

Jesus Christ Pose
Black Hole Sun
Fell On Black Days
Spoonman
Pretty Noose
I'll definitely pick up Jesus Christ Pose.

Great pack. I'm afraid to buy any DLC right now though. I want to get both rage packs and the soundgarden pack on 360 first, but not until I know they'll transfer forward without issue

I think he new stuff has been transferring over just fine.

I'm firing up the PS4 version tonight for the first time. I hope it plays better than the x1 version.

Went to buy soundgarden on Xbox 360 and got an error message: There are no items available for purchase at this time

Anybody know about this and when the issue might be resolved?

I think it's a marketplace live issue. They are also missing a bunch of ubisoft digital games to download.

Ok people I'm going to apologize right from the start. I've been going on about Bandfuse and I know there are alot that are just plain tired about my support of the game (but I've had a few tequlia shots and I'm saying it anyway), Gamestop  has it avaiable probably at a store near you for PS3 at $2.97 and xbox 360 at $5.99 (no online purchases). I held my tongue when the band pack was at $15.99 but its back at over $70.00 bucks on Amazon when aside from the 2 cables you could have gotten, there is an acoustic guitar pickup included that one reviewer claims will work on both the Bandfuse and Rocksmith game( I personally don't know if this is true but if it is, watch for the price drop again). Plus at this price, if one was to hold on to it for awhile, it possibly could be one of those games that could be highly desirable in the future(first with actual recording artist input and such). Bandfuse had a Twitch stream going which was cool,(it had tips and tutorials) and now Rocksmith is doing the same. In my opinion this is smart and it reaches multiple levels of players, I will go on a limb and predict that the future release of Rocksmith 20XX will do the same with actually recording artist involved in the process. Food for thought...I need another shot so peace..out and once again my apologizes for the constant support.

Yeah, I'm just waiting vainly in hope that I can recoup the $27 I spent for my Bandfuse copy from AWD last year.
Still pissed I missed being able to break even on trading that thing by a single frickin day.

I've made more than what I spent just by using the Kongregate coupons and buying up every copy of Bandfuse in my state then selling the copies on eBay. It dulls the sting of having bought such a shit game so early. I figure that, with the new DLC for Rock Band and the survey they put out today, that we'll see RB4 at some point. Given how cozy the relationship between Harmonix and Realta was, I'd be VERY surprised if Harmonix didn't purchase the rights to Bandfuse's cable and technology for use in RB4 when Realta went under.

I was a fan of Bandfuse. Thought it did a lot of things better than Rocksmith. Found the scrolling tab to be really easy to play as well. I even still have the Bandfuse shirt and guitar picks I won from their twitch streams lol

Update. Songs take quite a log time to enumerate, RS1 import pack is unavailable, the sound has completely disappeared a few times & I'm missing a couple of DLC songs. I have not experienced any lag per se. I'm using the optical cable plugged directly into my receiver. I'm really bummed about the RS1 tracks being unavailable. Apparently the devs are working on this issue. Hopefully, it will all be ironed out soon. Overall, the port seems a bit unfinished.

I imported the RS1 pack on PS4 couple weeks ago.

They removed it ?

Yeah, apparently the PS4 option is no longer available. For whatever reason I can only download the ps3/vita version. The ps4 version has mysteriously vanished from the psn store too. It has become a common problem reported in the support forum. Hopefully, they will put it back up. I can't even find the ps3 version in the store anymore either.

well that blows, glad I got it when I did then.

I've had no problems whatsoever and have been pleasantly surprised at how much better it seems to run than PS3.
I was really hesitant to switch platforms initially, but have been really glad I did.
Optical cable straight to my soundbar on PS4 seems to give me way better response than component cables on PS3 did.

If it hadn't been so cheap Black Friday I prolly would still be on PS3.

1/20 DLC - Singles, last track TBA
Rick Derringer - Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo
Dio - Rainbow in the Dark
Motörhead - Ace Of Spades
Styx - Renegade
???

Debating if I actually want to spend the money on real lessons. I love Rocksmith but part of me wants an actual person telling me I am doing shit wrong, especially at a beginner level.

Although I am learning a lot from Rocksmith.

Did you ever play rocksmith on ps3? I think it detects if you owned it before they let you buy the import pack.
It's not working for anyone now if you look at the Ubi forums.

I love the PS4 version and haven't had any of the issues the earlier poster mentioned. I'm not even running an optical cable - just HDMI - and it's definitely playable. I might connect the optical when I start doing the arcade games, but we'll see.

If you really love it (playing guitar) a real instructor will certainly help you with theory and such. I never have done it, but if I could afford it, I'd love to have someone teaching me in conjunction with Rocksmith. Like - pick 5 songs you love from Rocksmith and then let an instructor teach you the theory behind those songs. Or even I pick 3 and the instructor picks 2 and we work on those songs.

I think the sound problems were related to the new cable that came with the physical copy. I purchased it from AWD. I decided to return it and buy the digital version. I used an old cable and I haven't experienced any problems since. The enumerating issue may have been because it was the first time I fired up the game. I'm not sure though, but it hasn't happened again. Other than the issue with the import tool, I'm happy with the purchase.

Check out the books Fretboard Logic SE and Fretboard Theory (Desi Serna). Both are great tools.

It's not even about they theory but more so someone looking over my shoulder saying yes this is how you do x thing or you can do this better by doing this. Rocksmith kind of lacks in that area and I would like either some type of feedback or something more to make sure I am doing it right. I guess I just want to be sure I am on the right track.

BTW I am doing bass, not guitar.

Nothing is more important than to just physically practice. I had this issue myself when I first picked up a guitar years ago. Despite there being a wealth of information and knowledge out there and very easy access to it, my fingers simply weren't translating and doing what my brain wanted. There is no substitute for the kinesthetics you learn from just doing something, over and over and over. When you develop that muscle memory and your fingers are able to smoothly move around the frets with ease and your brain is able to interpret where your hand is at all times, even when you're not looking, that's when you become a "guitar player" (or bass in your case).

Whatever gets you to that stage is up to you. Some people lose motivation and don't practice. I think RS is a great tool in that respect because it keeps things fun and with new DLC all the time it keeps things fresh. Some people require an actual person to keep them on top of things. Think of it like going to the gym. I can find a routine that works for me and lift on my own every day, but if I had a personal trainer, they would sort of force me to go and to push myself. On my own it would be very easy to get into that pitfall where I get lazy and don't stick with it. Personally, I think you're wasting your money on a teacher and you can learn everything you need to become an intermediate to great guitar player on your own. Everyone is different though. If you think it helps, do it.

I'm sorry I can't figure out how to quote on my phone right now but in Sir_Fragalot's case I would recommend a Skype lesson. Its not much more than a teacher but you only have to buy 1 session. I know Jeff Brelin and Carole King are both bass players who offer them.
