I saw this.. anyone know how reliable this is? It's titled as: Saturn 4 In 1 Memory Card / Play All / Action Reply

I understand that the Saturn has internal memory, but how does it work? I know there's a battery that can be replaced. If the battery dies, do you lose all your saves? Do you lose all your saves if you replace the battery? I know that external memory cards can not be saved on, it can only have saves transfered to it from the HD. I need some explanation.. :whistle2:k:whistle2:(

Yeah, when the battery dies, the saves are gone. I'm not sure if you replace the battery if the saves can be saved.

I think the memory cards have to be able to be saved on because some games like Fifa 98 I think won't even fit on the internal memory. But some 3rd party games won't work with a non Sega brand memory card.

That one sucks. Depending on what you're using it for, get the real 4-in-1 (Sega Saturn Action Replay 4M PLUS) that has the RAMcart features for games like Marvel Vs. SF. Regular games don't detect it as a memory card though, you have to backup your saves to it manually via the system menu. Looks like the one you linked doesn't either.

Otherwise, look for an OFFICIAL Sega backup cartridge. Most games will detect it and ask you if you want to save to the internal memory or the backup cart.

u can simply replace the batteries. its like super easy. Those action replays are mostly used for playing imports.

i have the top one, the plain white one. i use it to play imports. I just replace the battery and it was real easy and better. i have yet to use it to save data.

At some point you'll need to either transfer saves or delete them. The Saturn internal is only 500 blocks, and say you play of game of Dragon Force - that's like 280-something right there. The best bet is to get both the Official backup cart and a 4MB Plus. Then imports, 4MB RAMcart games, action replay, as well as backup saving are all available to you.

*edit - Yes, replacing the internal battery is so easy a mongoloid could do it. I think I've changed mine 2-3 times since the system came out. Not that I'm a mongoloid or anything. You'll still need something bigger in the long-term and should consider the options.

You must be talking about this?

Well, I only bought a Saturn to play Dragon Force.. I read everywhere that you need a lot of memory, and I also just want to have a card to back up the internal memory.
And it's most likely to be the only game I will play on the Saturn. I'm not too interested in other titles.
A shame...there's a lot of good shit out there, if you're willing to hunt for it. Guardian Heroes, the import and domestic Capcom fighters...the arcade games - Virtua Cop/Fighter, the racers - Daytona, Sega Rally, Touring Car.

Yeah there were a lot of great Saturn exclusives. I really liked the racing games except for the lack of tracks in each game (Manx TT had 1 track that branched off in 2 directions!).
I'd check out other games, but I don't have the time to play, nor do I have the money to waste.
Not wasted...invested.

Most of the imports for the various "Virtua" line of games, particularly the imports, run around ¥100 or so, at least six months ago in Japan. I got Virtua Fighter, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop, Virtua Cop 2, and Fighters Megamix for less than $5.

At least, as a side benefit, a lot of the "generic" titles available for import by Sega tend to go for very little since they're available domestically. You could be able to net the Virtua Cop series for less than $10, easy.

Well, I'm looking to get a complete Dragon Force from hopefully as low as $40 to no higher than $70 on eBay from the way the prices are right now. I'm a big RPG fan and was looking at this title for a while. I happened to get lucky this past Saturday and picked up a Saturn for $20 with Virtua Fighter 2 and a controller. I didn't get an AV cable or power cord, but I just bought the AV cord on eBay and already have the power cord from my dreamcast.

Anyway.. I can't find the sega memory card anywhere.

i'm sure you probably wont need the memory card. i could be wrong but most of the gaems i have fit nicely on the main one. i have yet to start playing mysteria but its an rpg and i hope it fits well on it. i hope.

Yeah, but I'd prefer to have a memory card so I have a back up. I'd hate to want to pick up the game again later on, only to have the battery dead or something gone wrong.

i have this one. neat little hidden feature comes with it. it will allow you to play imports. found this out accidently YEARS ago (97/98) after i bought a 4-in-1.

makes a good backup to the 4-in-1 as well. now if i could repair the cartridge slot on my saturn....

Don't count on it. Working Designs even officially lambasted Interact's SS memory carts back in their SS-supporting days since so many people complained to them that their files got corrupted (since Interact's memory compression was unreliable). The only way to go if you're looking for secure files is with an official Sega cart. Accept no substitutes.

That said, if you're thinking of getting into import gaming (hell, you might want to get Dragon Force II if you really like Dragon Force), the Action Replay 4M 4-in-1 is a solid choice. It does use memory compression but far fewer people have complained about their memory being wiped out as compared to Interact's products.

Yeah, I saw that one, but wasn't sure about what it was since it was described as "backup ram" instead of memory card. I saw others, but one said it was for the UK Saturn and the other one I emailed a while ago to find out if it was for the US saturn.

What's the difference between that and this? Are these the same?

Judging by the color of the cartridge, I'd say that one is an official UK memory card. Should work the same. The UK Saturn cases were black for thier region so I'm 99% sure thats the UK real deal.
*Edit:
From what I recall, the official name was 'Sega Saturn Backup Cartridge' & I just saw a UK site with that same official memory card so I'm positive it's legit.
But these UK memory cards work for the US saturn? That would be great.
The only region-locked hardware I've seen for Saturn was the VCD player. The memory card should not be locked to UK. It's very easy to fool it otherwise if you're comfortable soldering there is a simple mod to create a switch to toggle regions

The SS memory carts are all region-free. In terms of price, they generally go:

Europe > US > Japan

It's easy to find cheap, loose (no box) JP memory carts for $5-10 while European carts can go for over twice that amount.
