Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Are there any good shmups on sale or just cheap in general?
Jamestown Jamestown JAMESTOWN.

But it might get a daily deal. Who knows?

Trying to get into a Hoard 4 pack. I'm PMing people but I'm late. I could run it if need be but I'd rather just be a part of it. I'd really prefer if the person running had some good feedback as well.

I missed the Oblivion sale. :'(

I might be remembering this wrong, but if I recall doesn't Steam put all the best selling games of the sale as the final day's selection?

I missed the Oblivion deal as well, the first day of the sale Steam was getting hammered and I couldn't even add the game to my shopping cart. Then I pulled a 12-hour shift at work and got back home too late to buy it, so I hope they do end up putting it on sale again

They usually do that on the last day or two.
regret not getting the Magicka Complete Pack

still deciding on Darksiders
The Magicka complete pack is still on sale for $8.49 and from what I heard Darksiders is totally worth it, haven't played it myself but I'll find out soon enough

I tired the demo, twice. I really could not get past the controls.
I picked up Half Life 2 Deathmatch for £2..

Nothing great for Mac users so far which sucks...!
I concur! I'm going to pick up all of HL2 for $6.50 to round off The Orange Box for me. Nothing else has been amazing for me yet.

I thought Darksiders was a pretty good port but I played it with the 360 controller. I was able to force 8xAA and maintain a solid 60 fps on my old PC.

oops. for Magicka, i meant to say that i got the vanilla version.
what are the must have dlc, if any, for magicka single player/co-op?
None are "necessary," but I would say if you had to get two, the Vietnam (you get a mufuggin machine gun!) and the Nippon (katana!) are the two to get. Again, you can live without them, but for a little extra zest to your single-player/co-op game, those are the two you want.

All the DLC is on sale, too. You can probably pick up most of the relevant ones for around $5ish.

Regarding the DLC: Vietnam is the only true 'expansion' content. The rest are either PvP/Challenge (fight off waves) maps or item packs.

thanks!

I still havent finished the main game for Magicka, since I only play it with my friends, and none of us feel like finishing it right now. I guess Ill hold off on the dlc until we actually finish playing it.

It seems that I already own a ton of the games that are on sale today. Since there are so many requests for game opinions here, I thought I'd share the "recommends" that I've written on Steam for these. Steam keeps you to about 1000 characters, so these are nice and brief. I hope this helps someone.

Battlefield Bad Company 2
Disappointing. I keep buying Battlefield games trying to find one that's as fun as the original BF1942. This, like the others, is not it.

I find the single player campaign ridiculously stupid. Seriously, I can feel my brain dripping out of my ears playing this game. Battlefield games should NOT have a single player ANYTHING.

I tried the multiplayer, and could not get the hang of it.. Very, very frustrating. It is clear though that MP in BFBC2 offers more depth of strategy than most.

Look, I generally do not enjoy military shooters, so I understand that I'm not the target audience. If you like these games, then rock on with your bad self and buy this puppy. You will probably enjoy it more than I did.

Bioshock
Bioshock is a great game. It's polished, gritty, tense and sometimes frightening. It's also quite wordy and philosophical. There's a lot to like here. The sound, especially, is amazing, and the graphics are beautiful.

The game promises a "play it your way" experience, and succeeds, to a point. The many plasmids (think "spells") encourage you to try different tactics, but the very first combo you learn is the easiest and most effective: shock your opponent, and then bludgeon him with a wrench while he's stunned. It’s generally easy to identify a best plasmid to use for each situation; although you can explore others.

I should also point out that this game is psychologically very taxing. You spend a great deal of time looting dead, mangled, burned corpses. You're crawling through a destroyed city. The game is oppressive and claustrophobic, and seriously depressing. I was glad when it was over, but also glad to have played it. Difficult at the time, but it left a lasting impression.

Hoard
HOARD received a disappointing reception from the Steam community. I enjoy playing this game, but it quickly fell off the top 100 games list. There's nobody playing this now, which makes matchmaking difficult. While the AI is pretty good (better than me, actually), it's more fun to play with human opponents and their quirky styles.

The gameplay is fun. Fast-paced and frantic, like an arcade game. In multiplayer, however, there is no way to talk to the people in your game. If you're playing with people on your friends list, I suppose you could use Steam Chat to open up a voice channel, but for the most part you're playing blindly with strangers. This is OK, generally, except that matches take 8 minutes (I believe) and players sometimes drop out if they're losing. The Co-op game mode has the best chance of keeping a foursome together.

Whatever, it mostly works, even though nobody plays. If you buy this, hit me up. I'd install it again to play with someone I know.

Half-Life
A classic. And still very playable, more than 12 years later.

Good story, good puzzles, great atmosphere. No other shooter from the same era remains as playable and enjoyable as the original Half-Life.

But you've probably played it if you're reading this. So can I get a what-what? How many times have you played through Half-Life?

Half-Life Opposing Force
Opposing Force is very enjoyable to play after Half-Life. It's neat to see more of what's going on at Black Mesa while Gordon Freeman is running loose.

Opposing Force retains the polish of the original Half-Life. It doesn't tell the same great story, but the puzzles are strong and it fleshes out the original nicely.

Half-Life Blue Shift
Blue Shift is like the poor relation in the universe of Half-Life. While it's not a BAD game, it defintely doesn't stack up to the awesomeness of Half-Life.

If you've played Half-Life and Opposing Force, you might as well play Blue Shift just to finish the book. But be forewarned that the game is not as well designed as the other two. But if you want one last trip to the Black Mesa facility, here it is.

Also played but haven't done a nice review:
Plants vs Zombies is AWESOME
and so is Half-Life 2,
and the Half-Life Episodes.

Morphx2 there is a demo if you want to try it out. I would say its ok for SP, but most of the DLC is pointless if your gonna go solo. Might only want to pick up Vietnam and maybe a clothes pack or two.
Okay guys. I did the four pack for Magicka but I need to know how to send the multiple copies I bought out. Any help?
I think you're supposed to click "Games" on the top of the steam window
and then click mange gifts and guest passes...
I think. Never did it before.

Never done it myself Anse Solis but I think you go to the games tab at the very top of steam and click manage gifts and guest passes. But thats just my best guess.

You should ALWAYS take it with a grain of salt when you hear someone say that.
Wished I would have waited just one week b4 buying Magicka. This deal is great.
I wish I would've waited until today to buy all the DLC, rather than Thursday.
Ok, steam is starting to piss me off. The connection keeps getting lost and the download just stops dead.
This..I bought the Half Life episodes & one is stuck @ 64%..Two won't even start :/.

I might buy Magicka complete after I finally try the demo..

I find that if they won't start no matter what then close steam and reopen it, they usually start then.
Magika OK for single player or not worth it?
Eh, it's okay but 90% of the fun is multiplayer. As someone else said: try the demo. And even if you like it I'd just buy the base game.
How is BC2 if you are only going SP with it? Just dont have time for MP with 3 kids! LOL
Not worth it. It lasts a few hours but the bulk of the game is multiplayer.
