Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

decided to pass on Fallout New Vegas the price is more than I want to spend right now, I think I'll wait for the inevitable GOTY edition. I did pick up Mount & Blade complete pack, those large scale battles look awesome plus it has tons of mods readily available in case I get bored with the main game

My thoughts too. I'm holding off until I get around to finishing Fallout 3. I'm still struggling to make much of a dent in the backlog I already have. It does look good though.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the Mount & Blade games? I'm trying to decide between the original or WF&S.
I haven't played With Fire and Sand yet but I've heard mixed reviews. Warband is the original with better graphics an multiplayer. It's pretty fun and allows you to do things you can't in other games.
Hey guys, quick question.

Sometimes when I've activated a game on Steam, it gives me the option to download and install other optional parts in addition to the game, such as the GECK mod toolkit for Fallout: New Vegas. But if I don't opt to download and install them right at that very second, I can't ever seem to find a way to do so. It's super frustrating, as I no longer remember which games this has happened for. Is there any way to find the option to download these optional files again?
You know I'm wondering too now. I canceled the initial install of New Vegas, and saw that option for GECK. Now, I can't find it anywhere. I tried hitting install again, but it just showed the game. Maybe it would be under tools when installed?

Anyone know?

Today will be the first and likely the only day of the Steam sale when I won't be home when it starts. I'm actually going to try checking out the Steal front page on my 3DS when I take a break from work later this afternoon. :D

I may be wrong but I think the GECK is located in the game's main directory. I don't think it shows up in the Tools section. I'd check but I'm at work.

Was A Reckless Disregard for Gravity on sale the first day? I keep thinking it was, but maybe it's just that there was a ticket offered for that game the first day.

Edit: Found my answer on the first page of this thread. Reckless hasn't been on sale yet.

I normally wouldn't do this but PLEASE buy Terraria for as much as you can. I mean I don't even feel that $10 is a fair price for the game when there is SO MUCH content. Honestly $20 would be more fair. Terraria was programmed by ONE GUY much like Minecraft originally.

I understand this is CAG but $10 (or $7.50 like it is now) isn't gonna break the bank for an amazing indie game. I've literally put 100 hours into the game and I'm not even bored of it yet.

Hmm seeing as the Fallout "franchise" failsale didn't include the original fallout games, I don't reckon they will be on sale this summer.

I wonder if I should pick them up now then. They seem like fun and the pack for FO1 and 2 is 50% off for 10 euros.

any thoughts?

I was just looking to see what the price of Puzzle Quest Galactrix is, as I was hoping to get rid of my disc-based game. I was surprised to see the game isn't on sale at all. Really? $19.99?

Major pass.

Tell you what: I'll buy it if it goes on sale. If I get to the 100 hour mark I'll send the developer a cheque with 10 dollars :booty:

I'm expecting you to send a cheque of at least 20 dollars right now though. Since you think the developer deserves it so much.

I would donate if they set up a paypal.

I got Terraria for $7.50 just the other day and already lost 12 hours to it. It's super addicting, and more enjoyable than anything I've played in a while.
I would donate if they set up a paypal.
An easy way to give them money is to gift it to your friends. :)

I'm hoping for a blur sale.

Is it just me, or is it time for this thread to close and a new one open? This thread is ENORMOUS. I thought threads like these usually got closed by 10,000 posts.

I've never understood why that happens. The thread might be gigantic but at least everything is in one place.
I've never understood why that happens. The thread might be gigantic but at least everything is in one place.
It happens because a while back before it was fixed, threads could only go up to 50 pages if I remember right (I don't remember how many posts it was) before posts would stop showing up. After it was fixed it kind of stuck, particularly with the OTT/GGT/RPG/FGT threads. There's probably a better explanation somewhere on this site, but that's the jist of what I remember.

EDIT: Closing it is entirely optional. It's preferred at the moment I think to close after a while since the thread search is broken from what I hear.
Bully was recently like $5 or so, and I picked it up then. I started playing it, and when my husband saw it, he started playing it on my account in offline mode. We played the game together at the same time for a couple weeks, putting at least 30 hours into it each. We had a great time laughing at all the outfits Jimmy can wear. The missions are varied and quite fun. I really enjoyed exploring Bullworth and the town, and a lot of the characters and stereotypes are entertaining. A lot of geek/gaming references.

I can't recommend it enough, especially considering it's less than $4. It also supports the 360 controller. PC controls are really bad, I hear.
I think Bully is really fun, but it does get repetitive-- especially when you are going for 100%. 360 controls were fine for me when I played through it. Any Rockstar fan will definitely enjoy this game though, as I did. At this price, just buy it.

Yes. In Steam, go to your Library, then select "Tools" from the drop-down list. That's where all the non-game downloads that come with your purchases end up. (SDKs, server components, sometimes even DRM components.)

(Note: I am guessing. I dont' own New Vegas. But that is the first place I'd look. After that, check the steam forums - you can browse for answers without registering. Good luck!)

Wait 'til the last day to buy FO3. You'll be kicking yourself if you pay $22.50 and it goes on sale for $10. :D

Regarding FO1 and 2 and Tactics, I would suggest getting them at GOG.com instead of Steam. You'll have to check for prices in Euros... Up til yesterday (?) they were on sale for US$3 each at GOG, but now they are back up to US$6 each. But for that low low price, you get all that loving goodness that GOG puts into game re-releases (wallpapers, soundtracks, the Fallout Bible, etc). It's just a ton of good stuff.

Might cost a little more than the Fallout package on Steam though. But you're getting a lot more from GOG.

Well I would not say buy Terrarria just because one guy made it, and the story behind it. Buy Terrarria because it is like crack. The thing is Minecraft is good but it gets boring since there is no real thing to work towards, except building a pimp house. Terrarria fixes that by having you build up armor, fight bosses, etc.

$7.50 is this game is a steal but wait till the last day just in case it goes for a daily. Mount and Blade With Fire and Sword did and that game is pretty new.
The thing is Minecraft is good but it gets boring since there is no real thing to work towards, except building a pimp house. Terrarria fixes that by having you build up armor, fight bosses, etc.
Depends, if you play it like a regular game, then yeah, Minecraft SP is kinda weak. But I play it as a sandbox in creation mode in MP with some friends, and damn that is fun. The amount of crazy shit we've made is worth the price of admission.

I checked the Tools section and it's not there, but a lot of tools are for games I don't own. At least with the GECK I can get it from the F:NV site, but it's frustrating that aside from that one initial prompt, there's no other record of it anywhere in Steam. That's poor design. Now I don't know what others tools, not listed in Tools, I may be missing for my games.

And I want tags for my games, gosh darn it.

Debating the Doom pack. Might wait until the winter sale and just splurge on the iD pack for only about $20 more.
Isn't this the guy who had YouTube erase a video review of his game because the reviewer was mean?
I was going to say I'm not buying it on principle if this was true, but reading over it the video "review" that was posted (review being used lightly) slandered him and basically personally insulted the dev in the same level a 13 year old would assault someone. While it probably wasn't the best thing to do to have youtube pull the video as people can still see it on the places website, I don't blame him one bit.
I would donate if they set up a paypal.
If you buy the game for me, and I find that it is really good, I will buy the game for one of my friends who is willing to make the same deal, and so on and so forth. That way if it is as good as you say, there will be a chain of people buying it!

Is Terraria capable of being controlled with a gamepad at all? I get a little confused watching the trailer for the game, when I try to figure out what the controls do and how they work.
Is Terraria capable of being controlled with a gamepad at all? I get a little confused watching the trailer for the game, when I try to figure out what the controls do and how they work.
some people have used joytokey to map keys to a gamepad, but you need mouse control to click on the desired blocks. The controller just makes moving around easier. There's no reason gamepad support cant be added, just need to add a system to chose which blocks you are targeting. Would be slower though.

It might have been said already ,but Frozen Synapse is AWESOME. The multiplayer's completely asynchronous so you can play totally at your pace.

Basically in Terrarria you move around with the A&D keys, jump with the spacebar, and use everything else with the mouse really (except for opening the item menu).

You use the mouse to select a block for mining or select where you place something on the map. It works quite well and you wont need a gamepad. Trust me, I refuse to play 99% of 2D games without a gamepad but for terrarria it's fine without one.

The more I look at the posts in this steam summer thread and the one on places like NeoGaf, it quickly becomes apparent how limited CAGs are in terms of their ability to investigate games they've not heard of before on a regular basis or seen a commercial on television.

Sad bear is sad. You guys missed out on a lot of great CHEAP content because you've never heard of it. That said, I'm glad Frozen Synapse is getting a lot of love. Everyone buy it because it's absolutely stunning in its gameplay design. Those who have bought it are claiming that it's their 2011 strategy GOTY.

I still have a copy of frozen synapse up for trade. I know a few people PM'ed me yesterday but I had to leave for an emergency, if anyone is interested please PM me.

On topic, I'm very on the fence with Alpha Protocol. I think I'm going to pass, hopefully today's sale will have a good RPG in it.

I think the problem for me is not that I don't look up games I never heard of, because I do often. It's more of a fact that I don't have the time to play everything, and well it's not that I don't have the money to spend on it, it's more of I just don't want to buy 18,000 small cheap games when I know I will never get to them in over a year.

I have some of those games on my radar..I'm hoping for an indie pack to buy them all at once. If not, I'll grab them all on the last day.

Fair enough. But I see cases where people are double-dipping on games they already own as well. It's mind-boggling. Like a specific game has become their comfort blanket or something. It's bizarre.

I will say this for Terraria if it goes daily you should really consider buying it, I've lost 40 hours to it since launch, and my girlfriends almost put 30 into it. Super addicting and fun even more so when you have a friend playing with you. The developers are updating at a nice pace too with a lot of content. Game has improved a great deal since it first came out.
y'all need to add Isurus to your friends list so i can pwn you noobs
I added ya to Steam. I definitely suck at this game. The tutorial didn't cover what "checking" does. What does it exactly do?

This. I like to wait until I've made progress on my backlog before delving more into the indie games. I'm also not usually into puzzle or certain types of strategy, with very few exceptions.
It's not that I haven't heard of them, I'm just not interested. Glowing reviews and being told to buy something isn't going to suddenly change that. I can make my own decisions, thank you.

I have Arcadia and SquareLogic (which wasn't mentioned), and they're both quite addictive. I haven't gotten around to playing PA yet, but I do have it. I'll buy Terraria no questions asked if it's a daily for at least 50% off.

I'm going to guess that the last day will be a conglomeration of previous sales, with a couple new ones thrown in. Didn't they do that in the winter sale?

I'm always open to recommendations, but I can't say that a bare list of 30-odd games without explanation as to why they're recommended is terribly persuasive.

I almost bought Alpha Protocol. I played it on a friend's laptop once and I dug it despite the numerous glitches, but my budget for this whole sale is $20 and so far I've spent $8. I'm going to go play some Darksiders before 10 AM roles around.

That's the point I'm making. You want me to sell you on these games? I'm not going to do that. I gave you a bare list of 30-odd games. Now go do some research as to which, if any, of them interest you instead of asking me to be a human billboard. I mean no disrespect but the point I'm getting at is that I gave you a list of games to look into. I didn't give you a list of games to buy. Subtle difference.
