Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
With the overwhelming response for TF2, I am now more inclined. Let me explain my situation, my issue with shooters is that I am handicapped and on a wheechair. My hands have slow reflexes which kinda affect my aiming. Mouse/Keyboard is worse because I need arm movement as oppossed to say just fingers. Will using a pad and sucky aiming be a big issue?
Team Fortress 2 is the best first person shooter a person in your situation can play because of all the different classes, and because of the laid back style. TF2 isn't hyper-competitive like the Halo or the Call of Duty franchise, so even if you have a steep learning curve, most people will still be nice and encouraging to you.

Regarding the classes, I bet you'd be great at Medic. You point near a teammate to heal them while they run around doing precise maneuvers and you just help them out. If you get bored, you could also try engineer, where you build sentry guns and teleporters that do most of the work for you. (Engy and Medic happen to be my 2 favorite classes). Heavy and Pyro are both easy to play as (but hard to master) because you can just hold down the mouse button and run around. You don't have to aim carefully or go for headshots. And if those aren't great, there's still 5 more classes for you to experiment with, so you'll probably find one you like, and it's perfectly acceptable to practically never play certain classes.

Buy it, and I doubt you'll feel like you wasted your $5. There's just so many different ways to play that I'm sure you'll find one that's fun for you.

What type of games are the Hitman games? I've never played any of them. Is 47 any good? Its metacritic score is way lower than the other 2.
Thanks for the heads up on Call of Pripyiat on Amazon, any word on if you can use the code on Steam like the Mafia II thing?
I don't believe so.
how come stalker clear sky is never bundled into anything? because thq didn't publish it?
Yes, different publisher. I don't foresee it ever being bundled all together. As mentioned above, Clear Sky is the worst of the three, save your time and money and read a story synopsis online.

Bought it just now. Thanks for the reply, mind you, I am going to be using a pad. Less movement on my arms that way.

Doh, I already have Empire and Napoleon Total War and I won't get the extra copy to gift if I buy the bundle. It would be nice for the DLC... YARGH.

Anyone play the expansion, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising??? I want to get Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, but I don't know about Uprising.

Man, I just played TF2 on 360 for about an hour. I know most of you will say it is much better on PC, which I am sure it is. However, I just can't seem to get the hang of the game. Is it always just never-ending quick games? Also, when I play it seems when rounds start I lose my team, and have no idea where to go and what to look for/do. Maybe this is all just for being new to the game, but, I feel extremely left out/behind when I play.

I want to like this game and it should be a no-brainer at $5, but, I just don't feel right playing it. Is this something that would go away rather quickly with a full afternoon of playing on PC?

Thanks in advance for any advice and opinions.

Start out with a map like 2 Forts. It's a basic mirror map with a bridge seperating the middle. It's pretty easy and you won't lose your team. To explore you can always explore your own side while hunting for spies :)

Those games can also last hours and go nowhere for a long time so it's fun to just go in there and fool around if you want to do that rather than progressive maps. There's plenty of 24/7 2fort servers

^I hate the never ending games, It's mostly how people play on PC though.

As for losing your team, you just need to get used to the maps & objectives. It "might" be better on PC, if you find a good server where people communicate and try to strategize before the round begins.
Can anyone recommend Supreme Commander 2? Would like to just snag the base game and hopefully get the DLC on sale later but sounds like the DLC is pretty much needed.
The DLC (as has been pointed out) does not change the singleplayer campaign, but it does give a much-needed boost to units and maps for Skirmishes (SP vs AI) and anything online. I recommend the pack wholeheartedly as it has some really great units from previous games and a few larger maps. If nothing else, d/l the game from Steam, give it a try and if you like it buy the DLC before the sale ends.

SupCom 2 got a good bashing from everyone at launch because it didn't live up to SupCom/FA. Since then, the dev has spent a lot of time improving, balancing, and adding stuff. It's a much better game now than then.
I just bought TF2 because of the glowing recommendations.
I'm thinking about the Jedi Knight collection because i loved the series when i was younger but i have no idea how it has held up.
I just played about an hour of Jedi Knight II: Outcast and it's held up remarkably well. It's built on the Quake 3 engine, so it does have that going for it.

I can understand that but I'm just highlighting that there's more to TF2 than matches that fly by since he was getting that image from the games he was playing :)

2fort is fun, but it will get old after a while. I suggest trying a Payload map (they start with "pl"). Pl_goldrush and pl_badwater are two of my favorites. In this game mode, you can see the glow of the cart through walls, which helps direct you towards the objective...to either push the cart (blu team) or stop it (red team).

I have Hitman Blood money, So I only want to get one other Hitman game. Can someone tell me which one is better Hitman 2 or Codename 47, Whichever one has more stealthy missions I prefer.
What type of games are the Hitman games? I've never played any of them. Is 47 any good? Its metacritic score is way lower than the other 2.
If you believe the Steampowered forums, then you should just buy Blood Money and skip the others because the others are ancient and don't include all the features of the latest and greatest. That seems to be the consensus there.

I was tempted by the Hitman pack until I realized $7.49 for a pack of games that cost $2.49 individually is a ripoff. If they had put it at $5, I'd have bought it. Pack for $5, individual games for $2.50. So I think I'm just getting Blood Money.

I played Far Cry 2 a few times and man, that game was just painful to play. I mean, horrible. Not worth paying money for. Perhaps if they paid me...

The ones I'm getting today:

Hitman: Blood Money
Star Wars: Jedi Collection
SupCom2
C&C4

I'd have bought Kane's Wrath, but it requires I have C&C3 on Steam. I don't have it on Steam. Got the STALKER pack during Perils of Summer, Empire & Napoleon is too much for what it gives, and why wouldn't everyone on the planet already own TF2? That's like someone not owning Portal.

Pretty good deals today imo. Tomorrow's probably the last day of new deals. Here's hoping they go out with a BANG.

I need some advice... I bought Oblivion GOTY Deluxe yesterday, but I'd really like to buy these two games:

- Hitman Blood Money
- STALKER Bundle

Will I regret it? Are they similar (open-world, FPS) games similar to Oblivion?

@ProfNut:

Blood Money isn't open world and it's not really a shooter, you CAN do it shooter-ish but it shines as a stealth game, and you DO have quite a few ways to execute the mission, but there's no way it's open world. The Stalker games I'd say are pretty close though.

Get II, do NOT get 47.

If I were you I'd skip out on 47 completely, the games got way better as they progressed. In fact you could just jump right into Blood Money, the others might not have aged well (especially 47, though II was fun when I played it).

My haul from the sale:

Gifts for my friend getting his first gaming PC:
Portal
Half-Life 2
Team Fortress 2
Left 4 Dead 2

For me:
Team Fortress 2 (extra account)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC & CoP
Killing Floor

Not a huge variety, but it's been nice giving someone a bunch of great games to start out with.

I don't know anything about the Hitman games, but from the sound of it, they are NOT similar to STALKER.

I've been paying STALKER a bunch since the $0.99 GFWL sale around thanksgiving. It is probably one of the most realistic shooters I've ever played. The first hour will be frustrating, but once you get better weapons and armor, you will be able to progress quickly through the game. The atmosphere is very drab, but its really fun. Its not really a stealth game, but you do have to take cover whenever you are in a firefight with enemies. I'm pretty far into the game, and its getting really hard. The world big and its a nonlinear, although you need to proceed through "checkpoints" between each area.

There are scary monsters at certain parts, but after the first few encounters, its not as frightening, just nerve-racking. Bloodsuckers freak me out.

I have not installed any mods, and it has been completely playable. Gameplay tip: save your game often. I did modify some game file to decrease the camera shake. It was making me nauseous after the first five minutes of gameplay.

that's really nice of you! Just wanted to say awesome!

To everyone buying Stalker. For Shadow of Cherynbol you want to download a mod called Stalker Complete 2009 (I think that is the right number).

It fixes a lot of stuff in the game and adds TONS of great things. I can not recommend this mod enough it will make the game experience much better.

Thats an exaggeration. The game is not perfect, its not like farcry, but its not horrible.
So is there one more sale or two more sales left?
one more day and then a probable best of on the 2nd.

I sent a gift email for TF2 to myself and then redeemed it with one of my other steam accounts. However, its status has not been changed to "redeemed" on my gifts and guest passes page.

Does this mean that if I resend the email to another email address, I might wind up with an extra copy of the game? Or does it take a while for this page to update?

EDIT: Nevermind. Resending one updates the list.
Thats an exaggeration. The game is not perfect, its not like farcry, but its not horrible.
I never thought it that bad, but I would say that it isn't for everyone. For 5 bucks I think it's some good eye candy and it isn't a bad price.

I'm on this side as well, the game didn't do anything exceptionally new and the respawning enemies IS indeed annoying, but it's a decent romp. If you're looking for a single player FPS game, I'd recommend it.

The Worst part has to be the same checkpoints with the same bandits all the time, you will ended turning off your game and probably crying at all the money that you wasted even if it was only 5$
Doh, I already have Empire and Napoleon Total War and I won't get the extra copy to gift if I buy the bundle. It would be nice for the DLC... YARGH.
I just have Empire Total War (along with MTW2 and RTW), but I would get this for Napoleon Imperial Edition and all the DLC too if it wasn't for the fact that I couldn't gift Empire away. Valve/various publishers really need to change this shit already.

If I buy 2 copies of a game, I should be able to gift it to someone...at the very least. It shouldn't just be "absorbed" as one, as that's the same as STEALING...no matter how it is justified. I know it's not Valve's fault as they understand and allow you to gift extra copies of their games...but other publishers need to start doing things the right way.

So...I'm going to pass on the Total War pack and instead splurge on the C&C deals. ;)

I have to say Farcry 2 isn't worth $5. Rented it one time for the 360 and It felt completely not fun. I honestly didn't get far into the story but it seemed like it had nothing to do with the first game despite sharing the same name. Could be wrong but as I said I didn't get far into the story. Check points were bad, gun play wasn't that great, hated the malaria thing they had, and I hated the map system they had. No mini map, if you wanted to see where you were you had to pull up a map that blocks the screen so you can't even use it to navigate while driving. Overall I found it to be a poor experience. Not trying to bash it just give my 2 cents to anyone considering buying it.
So.many.RTS's.
I'm just hoping for a deal on Sword of the Stars Complete. I'll get it for $10 if I must, but I'd like it just a bit lower.

If you own STALKER : Shadow of Chernobyl, you can pick up Call of Pripyat for $4.99, just add the bundle to your cart.

I'm on the fence about it, only put in an hour or so of STALKER, but I think I'd enjoy the shit out of it if I dedicated some time to it. Post-Apocalyptic + Depressing = Awesome....
How is the multiplayer in Stalker?
Tacked on and not a lot of people play it. Stalker is primarily intended to be a single player FPS RPG experience.

Man, today was a killer for me. Had a few of the games thankfully lol. Bought today alone:

Dawn of Discovery+Venice Exp
Flight Control HD
Red Alert 3
Red Alert 3 Uprising
C&C 3
C&C 3 Kanes Wrath
Guardians of Graxie
Hitman Blood Money
Stalker Pack

ouch

Glad I didn't like Theater of War though it did look pretty damn cool. Would of bought Napolean if it was at a good price alone since I own Empire already.

I'm tempted by theater of war, but not enough to get it. Besides theres still a few non daily deal games I'm gonna pick up tomorrow after I see the last round of new daily deals. (I assume Sunday will be another recap day)

to give in to steam urging me to not by the start wars collection and just get jedi knight collection or not, already passed on kotor, anyone have a copy?

I'm with you on that one. Also waiting/hoping for it.

I can wait though :)

In for Hitman: Codename 47 and Madballs in Babo: Invasion. The Hitman pack looks like it's worth it, but my backlog's waaaaay too big right now to justify buying all of them.

Edit: So after checking the thread, I'm thinking I should've grabbed a different Hitman game. Well, crap. I bought it thinking I should get the first one. Oh well. I'm sure I'll play it anyway.

* There are video tutorials on YouTube which can help explain the different classes and strategies for TF2. With nine classes and all sorts of nuances in their proper play, it's really overwhelming if you're used to something like Battlefield and its four class system. I was never able to get the hang of TF2 and didn't feel like investing the time to master it.

* If I can give a warning about the Jedi Knight games, it's that to modern eyes and standards, those 20th Century graphics are going to make you want to scratch your eyes out. Dark Forces is basically a Doom mod; Jedi Knight has such low poly counts in characters, it makes Lego look advanced; Mysteries of the Sith was MOTS (see what I did there?), but with...wait for it...colored lighting. Basically, if you can't stand the look of the original Half-Life, you're going to be crying here. No knock on the games - I remember emailing a friend about how awesome JK was with the music and sound FX from the movies - just saying they're very dated looking.

* I bought Far Cry 2 the day it came out for $50 and seeing it now for $5 - it's been this cheap for a year - makes me sad. Too much driving around, looking for diamonds and then getting jumped and dying isn't very entertaining. I've got a monster rig now that can pump 100 fps with everything in the graphics cranked full blast and it doesn't make it fun. The aspect that I thought would be a boon to MP - the bog simple map editor (look up speed-mapping videos for fun) - never panned out. Pity.

I understand the need for some realism to sell the scenario, but enemies with Superman vision and decent guns when you have a rusty pistol and about 7 rounds of ammo equal no damn fun. I hit one part a few hours in where I had to go thru a gate where about eight enemies were waiting with machine guns and could shoot thru the narrowest gaps from 150 yards away and gave up. A challenge is one thing; feeling like the game is cheating is something else.
