Group Buys - Updated 05/20

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales
Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

I have only money left for 1. Which one is more fun to pick up? Thanks guys
Those are three different games.
KF is gritty class-based co-op survival horror with some mods.
L4D2 is polished story-based co-op survival horror also with some mods.
TF2 is straight class-based pvp with multiple modes and a bunch of mods.

All are well supported, both by the developers and the community. I'd highly recommend any of them, but I couldn't tell you which to get outright.

I'm looking to pick up an indie pack. Do any of them really stand out above the rest? Only Indie games I have are Gish, Puzzle Agent, And Yet it Moves, Jolly Rover.

Well, nothing in the re-deals for me. I'm about to clean up on the cheapies I've had hanging around in my wishlist though.

Just noticed that Armed & Dangerous in on steam. That was a fun game in the style of MDK, it has a gun where you cause a shark to burst out of the earth and devour your enemies, and it's only $2.50. Just in case you needed -another- thing to buy....
This has been one helluva Steam sale. Bravo to them for taking a bunch of my money with sick daily deals on a wide spectrum of games! :D

And hats off to eastx for his efforts in updating the first post. You couldn't ask for more:

Thanks, man! :applause:
Ditto - a final thanks again to eastx.

Also, until I realized it a few minutes ago, thanks to the mod for cleaning up this thread. I'm guessing there's been other unpleasant crap that's been posted which we never had to see... :)

Edit: And of course, thanks to the numerous people who's been offering game & mod suggestions, and well as mini reviews. You people generally ended up causing me to spend more than anticipated ;)
Gosh, here's the STALKER dilemma again...

Could someone that didn't like Fallout 3 like STALKER?
They are two entirely different games.

Fallout 3 is an RPG with some FPS elements
STALKER is a FPS with some RPG elements
lol @ all the people who told me Steam would NEVER repeat games in this sale.
I told you they'd never repeat games at a lower price than they were for dailies -- and I was right. They always have encore days.

Just re-echoing the question a few pages back (sorry if there was a response, didn't see it), but any thoughts on Grotesque Tactics: Evil Heroes? Looks like it could be a ton of fun.

Um, they already did 6 days ago

This is the only game that ever kept me playing just to see the cutscenes, which I thought were hysterical.
I am slightly interested in Killing Floor, if only for this unlock in TF2 for the Pyro. If that is the only reason, it feels wasteful...
Can always save up for it with stuff in TF2 (take a whole in the beginning though), and then trade for it if you really still want it later.

ABSOLUTELY! eastx worked hard to keep things updated during this crazy holiday season, and he established the main post neatly and filled with perfect information. I give him the highest honor I can bestow... The Ellie Award (hehe).

Seriously, great job, eastx, and thanks to everyone else for your helpful comments about what to purchase (and what to avoid). In general it was a terrific thread to follow, even if I didn't buy something on a particular day.

Happy Gaming, everyone!
Hmm, not sure if i should get the mafia 2 standard or the deluxe edition. What you guys think?
Anyone know before i buy?

Can Killing Floor be played with a 360 pad?
Can always save up for it with stuff in TF2 (take a whole in the beginning though), and then trade for it if you really still want it later.
lolwut? Sorry, didn't understand.

If this helps, I say that I like to blow shit up and enjoy games like Just Cause 2 and played Horde mode on Gears of War alot.

KF is a mod of Unreal 2004. Does it even look good for a 6 year old engine? Funny that you mention mods for KF since it will be a mod of a mod.. lol

L4D2: I doesn't care about story but when I played on the 360, I enjoyed the co-op part of it.

TF2: is it a cartoon version of Modern Warfare 2 since u mention class-based?

It has been asked a couple times but I will ask again just to be sure, any opinions on Grotesque Tactics? :D

Not interested in any other dailies but I am gonna pick up some other stuff, especially some indie packs I've been waiting on. I think Kids and Fright I am sold on, any other recommendations on indie packs or cheap stuff?

Also another thanks to Eastx for his work, and thanks to everyone else for the great conversation. See you next Steam sale.

I owned both games, pre-sale and I don't know how to get the hat.

Actually, I didn't get the "bounty" hat for the achievement hunting pre-sale either; maybe I'm doing it all wrong...

I was hoping that Dragon Age would go on sale but missed out. Maybe I'll grab some overlooked games today. Thanks again Eastx!

Hm, pretty good sale. Wasted $2 on games I'm probably not even gonna finish...

And sad that the Valve pack was just a pricing mistake and not an early release... ='(
lol you were wrong-o obvo. But I wasn't referring to you anyways lol. Him sensitive. :bouncy:
Er... put down the blunt. You said dailies could be repeated for lower prices. That has never happened and it didn't happen today so, whatever.
Killing Floor versus Left 4 Dead 2 versus Team Fortress 2?

I vote TF2. That's got the most to do, most types of play (meaning both gametypes and how to handle each class), things to earn and collect, and a big player base you can drop right into.

L4D2 is a lot of fun, and plays best when you've got people on your friends list to play with, but for me at least, replaying those campaigns gets old faster than tf2 maps, and since I don't like playing as the monsters very much, I mainly just stick to co-op.

No data on killing floor. I'm going to get that today.

Some people said previously that Grotesque Tactics isn't as good as the games it bills itself as lampooning and that the company seems to be "done" with it, fwiw. I've had it on my wishlist since the start of the sales in hope of it becoming a daily and have the Amazon $5 option bookmarked, so for three bucks I'll reward myself for waiting and give it a shot. Also grabbing other things I've waited upon.

Gotta join the others giving props to Eastx for the awesome work maintaining this thread.

Any thoughts on Painkiller? Every year I sit on the fence with this series because while it looks cool....I just have so much else to play. I have bought about 10 PS3 games this month and another 20-30 or so Steam games....then there is another two dozen games like Company of Heroes that I have bought through out the year or last years steam sale and not quite gotten to. I am going to play 10x more games this year and get through MOST of the back log, but not sure if I will finish all these or not.

So is Painkiller a must play that at the $5 and $2.50 I should buy and move up the que, or should I just wait for next years steam sale delaying playing this series yet again?

Well, that's a wrap for me this year. Ended up with:

* Bioshock 2 - $7.50
* P.K. Winterbottom - $.49
* Overlord Complete - $3.50 IIRC
* Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light - $4
* Plants vs. Zombies GOTY - $4

Total: $19.50

May've gotten more if I didn't already have so many of the games that were deals and an insane backlog already. As so-so as this sale was, it was great compared to the total failure the D2D sale was this year compared to 2009's.

Final Tally...
Day 1(12/20/10):
Deus Ex Collection ($2.99)
Indie 2D Pack ($4.99) [Super Laser Racer, Geometry Wars, VVVVVV, Bullet Candy, Galcon Fusion]
The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom ($0.49)
Super Meat Boy ($3.75)

Day 5 (12/24/10):
King Arthur Complete Pack ($5.39)
Overlord Complete Pack ($3.00)
Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse ($9.99)
Shattered Union ($0.49)

Day 6 (12/25/10):
X Superbox ($13.49)
Blue Toad Murder Files ($3.00)

Day 13 (1/1/11):
AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! ($2.50)
Broken Sword: Director's Cut ($2.49)
Time Gentlemen, Please! and Ben There, Dan That! Double Pack ($2.49)
Tropico Reloaded ($1.74)
Zeno Clash ($3.75)

Day 14 (1/2/11):
CivCity Rome ($0.99)
Indie Fantasy Pack ($4.99) [Nyxquest, Faerie Solitaire, Spectromancer, Bob Came in Pieces, Fortix]
Indie Kids Pack ($4.99) [Max & the Magic Marker, Crayon Physics, Toki Tori, Delve Deeper, Secret of the Magic Crystals]
UFO Extraterrestrials Gold ($4.99)

Grabbed Dead Space and am officially done. My haul this year:

- Puzzle Quest
- The Witcher Enhanced Edition
- Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
- Dragon Age Origins
- Red Faction Guerrilla
- Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition
- F.E.A.R 1 and 2
- Sid Meier's Pirates!
- Super Meat Boy
- Indie Beat Pack
- Mass Effect 2
- Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent
- Dead Space

Total Spent: 72.59

Thank you Steam :)

KF is more wave-based horde mode (where you either pick strategic points to defend or move towards the weapons trader). Here's a mod with 40 players vs horde:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqBthptoSy8

L4D2 actually has more game-modes outright, which I won't detail as you've played it before.

The one thing I laugh about this whole event... people claiming PC gaming is so much more expensive.

When's the last time you saw hit titles getting 50% or more within a year on any other platform? For $60, people bank 100s or hours of quality titles. You might get 3~4 retail releases with $60 and a good sale for a console.

Perspective gained +1. :D

Final haul:

Alpha Protocol, Amnesia, Archon Classic, The Ball, Big Brain Wolf, Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars DC, Burn Zombie Burn, Delve Deeper, Diamond Dan, Emerald City Confidential, Everyday Genius: SquareLogic, Faerie Solitaire, FATALE, FlatOut: UC, Flight Control HD, Fortix, Greed Corp, Grotesque Tactics, Hacker Evolution, Hammerfight, King Arthur, Lara Croft GoL, Mafia II (plus quest DLCs), NyxQuest, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Puzzle Bots, Scourge Project, Shattered Union, Spectromancer, Swords and Soldiers HD, System Protocol One, Toki Tori, Twin Sector, Uplink, Windosill, X3: Terran Conflict, Zen Bound 2, Zombie Driver

(Note: not counting indie games I already had as part of the packs I picked up--Future, Fright, Fantasy and Brain)

Recieved as gift:
Killing Floor

Gifted:
FlatOut: UC to two friends
AI War for my roommate
Empire & Napoleon Total War GOTY for my dad

for $144.28 for everything.

Done buying games for at least a month, and take out the gift purchases and I spent half as much as last year for the same number of games. Noooot baaaad . . . :)

Nothing for me from today's encore deals, I already grabbed some of those when they first went on sale. I did however get a few games that I was holding out on 'til the last day: Frozenbyte Collection, Sid Meier's Civilization IV: The Complete Edition, Tropico Reloaded, Blueberry Garden and Railroad Tycoon II: Platinum

I only got Bad Company 2 and Team Fortress 2 from this sale.

I want to get Mafia 2 but I'm still unsure about the game. I love playing free roam games but i haven't played any on PC. How are the controls? can I use a wired xbox controller?

It's entertaining, but fairly disposable. If you don't plan on playing it right away, I would wait until you have room in the backlog because it will be on sale again. And you really only need Painkiller Black. If you feel like spending the $5 now, go for it, but I wouldn't deem it necessary.

Total Purchases:
Back to the Future the Game $22
Company of Heroes $2.50
Crysis Maximum Edition $10
Killing Floor $5
Prey $2.50
Team Fortress 2 $5
The Witcher Enhanced Edition $5
________________________________
TOTAL: $52

Only games I regret buying are the Witcher and Killing Floor.
