I'm going to play (finally!) KOTOR 1 & 2. I know this has been posted several times... but... any link with the recommended mods? Just the esential, I want to play them the closest to the original, but without glitches and with some graphical enhacements

Maybe after it I'll play Mass Effect (yes Neuro... I know xD)

Oddly enough now that I hear there are cards I suddenly want this disease known as Bad Rats.

Also when the hell am I going to be able to actually download Sweezy Gunner?

Stupid question: How long is the wait after a Ubisoft game's release before competitive prices show up on Steam?
I seem to remember Far Cry 3 taking an age and a half to approach anything reasonable. Hell, it still hasn't hit my price point.

Spidey 3 could have been better if they did what I thought they were going to do, and leave the Venom's appearance at the end as a cliffhanger for Spidey 4. They tried to fit too much into the movie, on top of which I never found Sandman to be that exciting of a villain like Goblin or Doc Ock, he's just a petty crook with sand powers. Movie needed a second villain but not Spidey's biggest antagonist.
I could never understand why Raimi wanted to do Sandman in the first place. I always preferred Venom to most of the old-school Spidey villains. (Shocker? Scorpion? Rhino? Friggin...Vulture??!!!) But then I never really read the comics.

It bugged me for like... a couple days. Then I realized how much better it was. New blog post notifications, Amazon Deal of Day emails, general promotional emails, etc etc. Did I really need all that stuff flooding into my inbox and making it harder to see emails that were actually important? Not to mention I get phone notifications when I get an email, so I really didn't need it buzzing every 2 minutes with emails that weren't really important at all.

They're still there... they're just less obtrusive now. Honestly I couldn't go back to only having one tab now at this point.
This. I love how two thirds of my emails I can just conveniently ignore now.

I found the Gmail change useful too, because while I funnel everything (alumni email, ISP email, work, unis, etc) through Gmail, I only actually use Gmail itself on my phone, where there's less visual real estate, and the non-essential stuff separated out is great. I still POP email with Thunderbird at home where I have 9k+ filters+folders for sorting. So the Gmail boxes are just basically broader filters than I'd already used. And Gmail didn't do folders at inception which was a huge turnoff.

Looks like Groupees buyers didn't get screwed over this time! Planet Stronghold Deluxe Edition Steam keys are available on Groupees if you bought the Winter Wolves bundle.
Curses, foiled again!

I actually intend for it to be my 1000th game. I just hit 500 today though (with the Star Wars Collection), so I have a-ways to go.

You, I like you. Venom's been one of my favourite villains since the 90s cartoon and after I read Todd McFarlane's run with him.

Scorpion's cool though. Vulture's interesting (reminds me of hearing on the news today that apparently old mice who get blood transfusions from young mice end up in better health, recover from injuries better, etc, but with all the old billionaires in the world, this kind of worries me when it comes to human testing), Rhino's alright and Shocker's kinda lame. Shocker's existence is justified by this one scene from the cartoon though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMk-HPBF6Mw

So with the gf out of town this past weekend I actually had time to play something besides Puzzle Quest for a change.  First, I know One Finger Death Punch has already gotten some love around here, and I'll add my voice to the general approval.  If you bought it in a bundle and haven't tried it, I'd recommend you do, as it's totally rad.  Takes two seconds to learn and you can play for five minutes at a time if you like, so it's very low investment, but you'll likely want to keep playing.  I also like how it kind of induces a meditative state as you try to get into the flow of it.

Thanks to The Singularious I am the proud owner of a shiny new copy of Warlock 2, and I've been playing a bit.  Not enough for a proper preview, but a few quick thoughts:

- graphics have received a sizeable overhaul.  The game world is now much more detailed and quite beautiful.  Amazingly it seems to run as well or better than the original, although maybe this has something to do with the fact that with the increased emphasis on separate planes the actual maps are smaller.  But it feels better optimized; so far, anyway.  Also, I even like the new still art that accompanies the loading screens - I remember this being a bit uninspired in the first one.

- music and sound effects are for the most part completely recycled from Warlock 1.  This is disappointing, as I always found them to be one of the weaker aspects of the game.  Not a deal-breaker, though.

- the new spell research tree is very welcome.  Makes it feel even more like Civ, but is a huge improvement over the crapshoot we had in W1 where you didn't know what to research to get the spell you wanted.

- there are a bunch of new mechanics that I still need to figure out.  Overall, although the game is still very much Warlock and I feel right at home, there seems to be enough new for me to want to invest in the experience despite playing the first one to exhaustion.  I like that there are six races instead of just four although I haven't gotten to see the new ones yet.  It looks like the religion system has been overhauled so you can start building shrines (and researching their associated spells) right from the start without having to find a special holy ground tile first - a common-sense improvement that I expect should greatly improve the flow of the game.

Overall, the game feels more polished, with its own sense of identity about it - something I felt was sorely lacking from the first one.  Now it feels like a proper fantasy TBS and not just a Civ clone.  I kind of wish I would have skipped the first one entirely and just started with this instead.  Nice job, Paradox.

Oh also, did I mention there's also a campaign mode now? Overall, just a really nice package.  I suppose my final verdict is: as a Warlock fan, I would have paid up to $10 for it.

What your favorite burger?

ouch, that sucks, and yet they let so much other crap go on in their forums

I remember reading around that time that Raimi hated the character of Venom, but the studio was forcing it on him.

Same.

It reminds me of before I first got into Steam. 'This is terrible. They're trying to control me! People say it's terrible. It must be terrible...oh wait, it's pretty cool actually. Stupid people.'

Hmm. You know those Steam Online Conduct rules may be a bit hard to follow. I guess taking screen grabs and posting them is out since those images are probably owned by the game Dev/Publisher which is a bit odd because Valve added the ability to take screen grabs and post them. If they really wanted to be draconian about it they could ban millions simply for using a service that Steam itself provides. Also the one about creating a false identity is pretty funny. I'm pretty sure no one uses their real name as their Steam ID. Unless of course ..sMOKESPOt.. is on someone's birth certificate.

Totally know I'm being a moron here. Whatever.

Let's hope so. It's a long road to get back to where we were.

Sweezy Gunner keys are now being sent out. Give it a few hours before you get yours.
Should we already have them by now? I checked my many gmail boxes and no dice. :(

Edit: never mind... false alarm. It found its way into the Spam box this time around for some reason.

It's nice for when I have to resort to the webclient (last resort). I love filtering. I haven't found a sufficiently powerful email client on Android, I keep using the almightly Claws-Mail on my n900... which happily supports my crazy filtering needs.

(Also, PSA, don't leave mail on your gmail. The longest I leave any email on the server is for a month. The Electronic Privacy Communication Act of 1986 gives law enforcement free access to emails over 180 days old. Email that is stored on a third party's server for more than 180 days is considered by the law to be abandoned, and all that is required to obtain the content of the emails by a law enforcement agency, is a written statement certifying that the information is relevant to an investigation, without judicial review.)

I've found that Amazing Spider-Man runs at almost constant 60fps after I disable in-game AA. I haven't been able to get any Nvidia Inspector AA to work but I have SweetFX enabled with SMAA and it does a good enough job.

Really liking this game, it's a great value for $6ish if you can get it to run well. I've spent most of my time swinging around the city collecting comic pages but I've done some missions and the stealth is a nice aspect.

So those are my updated impressions if anyone cares.

Sorry but that's like asking me to keep all my games offline and backed up and not attached to any account and remember where I got them all from and where I have them stored and not lose them. Not gonna happen. I'm lazy and leave everything on a server I don't have to worry about. I've reformatted, changed computers and OSes more times than you can shake a stick at and no matter how much I try to back everything up, shit gets lost.

It's actually saved my ass multiple times to keep all my emails on a sever all the way back to the 90s. Like when some developer makes you write in an ask for a Steam key for some game I bought 2 or 3 years ago and asks for proof of purchase while others don't have it anymore.

Plus I'm boring and don't have anything to hide so I don't really care who reads what. I have something really important to say I pick up the phone and call. I'm sure someone can pull records of that too. Eh.

Paranoia, Ain't Nobody Got Time Fo' 'dat.

Yeah, I'm like 100% the opposite. I have about 8GB/300,000 worth of email. All backed up since about 1994. I try to keep nothing on my email servers (backed up on my personal server). And yeah, I'm one of those people that tracks every one of my games for every platform. Because...reasons.

Red flag! Red flag!

Telling people that you're "boring" and have nothing worth reading? Classic misdirection, right there.

Somebody call the NSA. At best Motoki is a criminal mastermind hellbent on world domination. At worst we've made somebody sift through fifteen years of daily joke emails.

:whee:

We must be exact opposites because I disagree with so much of this, so I'm curious about whether I will like The Winter Soldier, which looked pretty good to me based on the trailers.
Our differencing opinions aside I think you'll would really like The Winter Soldier... I liked it both as a movie and as a representation of the characters within. aka not too many liberties where taken with Captain and the others. (And really if you start from the Ultimate Marvel Universe, and not the 616 universe, there's even fewer.)

New Spider-Man movies look terrible. I've only seen the first one but the new guy sucks as Peter Parker (and people complained about the CGI in the Raimi films?!). I think Maguire and Dunst were perfect in those roles. If they hadn't cocked up the plot in 3 (yes the dancing was bad but the whole Venom subplot could have been handled much better and this was yet another movie that suffered from too-many-villains syndrome [which I suspect is probably the case in Amazing 2 as well]), Marvel would still be making Spider-Man movies with the original cast and we'd still get to see those crazy Bruce Campbell cameos.
While I do agree with you that Amazing Spider-Man 2 looks absolutely horrible how can you honestly say the actor is a horrible Peter Parker without having actually seen the movie? You're judging books by their cover, my friend. (Granted, I'll judge right along with you when it comes to Amazing Spider-Man 2... It looks horrible... WAY TOO many liberties taken with the characters... And that's not book judging. That's just watching the trailers.)

I'll be honest... Trailers for ASM2 where released far before I saw ASM so I went in with really low, low expectations. I didn't expect to like the movie but what I got was a Spider-Man that was far closer to the comics than we got in the Raimi movies... Was it prefect...? No, some stuff was changed (even in his origin story) but the got the key stuff important... and more importantly they didn't make any stupid design changes like Raimi did for no good reason. Stuff like that is always a hangup for me. Respect the character enough to treat them right.

And really, they do so much right...

Spider-Man 2 talk...

Just look at in Spider-Man 2 where he losses his powers because of issues in his love life...? Are you fucking kidding me? Peter has got enough issues in his life to not have to worry about stupid shit like that.

All that said I did like Spider-Man 2 enough to watch it a number of times... Mostly for the performance of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. He rocked it pretty well.

Oh, one more Spider-Man 2 thing...

The ending, when you see a dead Doc Ock sink past the camera is just a horrible scene... One of the most fundamental "rules" of superhero comics is you leave it were the villain can be presumed dead... never really confirmed dead. Granted, dead clones and body swaps have been used in comics to pull the "not really dead" off but that hardly really works in a movie with no talk of clones and no way to take/or fake the fused metal arms. Its just really horrible.

Notes: There was only some thought about Spider-Man 4 but Raimi had no desire to do it so the cast had no desire to do it. SM3 did gross more money than SM2 so even though it sucked it was undoubted a success. (Also Raimi also has no love for Venom and had no desire to use him but was forced to add him by the Studio... It's why it sucked so much.)

Lastly, Sony has the movie rights to Spider-Man... Not Marvel. There is a clause in their contract that if they don't continue to make movies it reverts back to Marvel. Its why they rebooted so soon when they had no cast.

The Dark Knight Rises was the perfect ending to the Nolan trilogy and after I had a chance to reflect on it I don't think he could have ended it any other way; it was the true "hero's journey" and all of the loose threads that connected it to the first two films, especially the first one were tied off while leaving the possibility of a continuation of the Batman legend sans Bruce Wayne. The Nolan films were a much-needed revitalization of the Darkknight Detective's screen life after the abomination that you alluded to in your post (the execrable Batman and Robin).
Again, In agree with you in many ways... it was likely the best ending for Nolan and his trilogy but like I said previously... His version of Batman is highly, highly flawed.

Bruce Wayne is BROKEN. Or, well, I guess that's only a half truth... Batman is broken. Everything revolves around preventing the injustice that happened to him. There's no pining for a woman. Yeah, a woman might entire his life for a time but the relationships with good women are sabotage and the relationships with the wrong woman (like Selina Kyle) end when they eventually revert back to their "evil" ways... Bruce Wayne is nothing more than a a tool in his fight against injustice, the same as a Batmoblie or a Batarang. If it became a handicap he would simply leave it behind.

That's not to say he cannot care for others... He absolutely cares about others but a complete stranger on the street isn't much different than a childhood friend. He would never truly love another as he would view it as a failure. Etc, etc, etc.

You don't really see that in any of the movies... The movies, while they can be entertaining at the moment, are still in the end... Flawed.

Batman Begins

At the end he would be dumping Rachel not the other way around... Its been a long time since I've seen it but he almost certainly would never reveal who he truly is to her.

The Dark Knight

This is less of an issue in this movie... Though some still happens. Mostly his pining for Rachel.

The Dark Knight Rises

He would never really accept retirement... If his body failed him he certainly wouldn't have hunched on a cane for 6 years. Some sort of backup plan would have been pursued. He most certainly wouldn't have retired to "Happy Ever After Land" like you see at the end of the movie. He would never accept it.

I do think that Man of Steel was good. Was it better than the Reeve Superman? I'm not sure but I know that DC was looking for a Nolan-style reboot after the dreadful Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, when Superman battles Nuclear Man (I'm not kidding). They definitely got it because this is a more detailed look at the origin of the character and a more troubled genesis, including that thing that happened at the end that I won't spoil. I'll be curious to see how it ties into the forthcoming Justice League and other films on the horizon, in no small part because as much as I love DC characters I've gotten the strong impression that, unlike Marvel, DC-Warner doesn't really seem to have a plan as to what they want to do with these characters in the cinematic universe.
They did a partial reboot with Bryan Singer in Superman Returns (It abandoned Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for peace) and it didn't go so well... Mostly, well, you almost have to blame Superman's rogue gallery, or lack of a compelling RG, on it... but time did it no favors either.

The full reboot just had to happen... and like you said its in a much better place because of it... A much bigger focus on his genesis means some of his more compelling villains not named Lex Luthor (nor from earth) could be used in future movies.

As for things happening at the end... (Massive Man of Steel spoilers, DO NOT READ.)

People act like it was a big deal but while extremely rare Superman has indeed killed people in the comic books. Purposely, not by some accident. (This was all Pre52 (DC recent reboot), stuff that was canon for over 20 years.)

As for DC/Time Warner mot having their shit in order... 10 years ago (or 15 if you wanted to include X-Men in this... Which is sort of a differnt beast. Most of the X-Men have never had a series outside of the X-Men or other "XBooks" while many of the Avengers and all of the core members of the Justice League have had decade long series) I would have flat out told you that their would never be a live action Avenger movie, that the best chance for a team movie would be the Justice League... The rights to Marvel's movies where scattered to the four corners of the world, they could never get them all back in house and that they didn't have the know how to make movies... DC is the complete opposite. All the rights are owned in house, they make movies every day, etc. What has happened... Simply couldn't/shouldn't have happened.

Marvel is owed major props for what they accomplished... They went from Bankruptcy to being so valuable that Disney dropped 4 billion dollars to buy it. Much of that is more to do with the power of the IP (movies) than the sale of comics.

Mask of the Phantasm was good, although I don't think it's even the best animated Batman film; that award would have to go to the recent adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, which is fantastic, even if Frank Miller still won't give it his endorsement.
I haven't seen them yet... I own the two part collection. just haven't gotten to it yet... But I would never compare something that basically copies a story from the comics to something that was original to the movies. I mean that's just so unfair. And by that example you would have to consider the recent Batman: Year One movie superior too.

Sort of out of place but something I wanted to add... if you look at the DC Animated Universe that Timm and Dini did so much with/for (Batman:TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League, etc) you'll see the most accurate to comics version of Batman in movies/TV,

Anyhow, I saw a few more movies this weekend... but this post is likely long enough already.

Yeah, it was long enough...

On the game front... Steam sales suck. I know there was some brief talk about check vs mate but its already been at this sale price in the bundlestar's store front. Its going to be bundled at some point. And that point is likely going to be sooner rather than later.

Oh trust me, if he is, we they already know. Now go back to idling for cards and be good docile CAG's and let us them do their job. Hmm, now did I read someone mention something about kitty porn? God bless the Patriot Act.

That's bananas, how many emails could they even store in 1986? Three, four?
Well that's the thing... you didn't used to leave mail up on the server. So when that law was written it wasn't so unreasonable to consider emails left on the server for 180 days abandoned. Most the the lawmakers involved probably had little to no understanding of email in 1986. It wasn't until the gmail beta that the proletariat had had enough server space to leave all their emails on the server. (Before that free email providers where actually shrinking your email quota, iirc yahoo from 5 to 4 MB, another major one (hotmail?) shrunk it down to 2MB.)

You guys remind me of crypto-nerds....

We cannot expect governments, corporations, or other large, faceless organizations to grant us privacy ...

We must defend our own privacy if we expect to have any. ...

Cypherpunks write code. We know that someone has to write software to defend privacy, and ... we're going to write it.

Midweek Madness
Kerbal Space Program - $26.99 $16.19
What is it with Kerbal and that Prison Architect game that they never leave Early Access stage and their sales always blow? Both of those were featured in the last Steam Summer Sale. I want to buy them already.

Good. Looking forward to Redboxing it.

You missed where I said I'd seen the first one.

Spider-Man 2 talk...
All that said I did like Spider-Man 2 enough to watch it a number of times... Mostly for the performance of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. He rocked it pretty well.
Agreed.

Again, In agree with you in many ways... it was likely the best ending for Nolan and his trilogy but like I said previously... His version of Batman is highly, highly flawed.

Bruce Wayne is BROKEN. [lots of Batman stuff]
I disagree. Your interpretation of the Bruce Wayne-Batman character is two-dimensional. Yes, as a young man, he is obsessed with his crusade for justice, but over the arc of the films, you see a man who grows and changes, someone who at last has come to terms with the idea that there is a life beyond the neverending battle for the soul of a city.

Yeah, you're right, I kinda blocked that one from my memory because it was so terrible. I don't think it has anything to do with bad villains--Supes has some pretty good ones: Metallo, Parasite, Doomsday, Bizarro--the main problem with that film was the problem that plagues the majority of new film releases: atrocious writing.

As for things happening at the end... (Massive Man of Steel spoilers, DO NOT READ.)
It seemed like a big deal because at least in the cinematic history, it was unprecedented. It was a surprisingly emotionally-charged film in general.

I haven't seen them yet... I own the two part collection. just haven't gotten to it yet... But I would never compare something that basically copies a story from the comics to something that was original to the movies. I mean that's just so unfair. And by that example you would have to consider the recent Batman: Year One movie superior too.
Actually I don't. I watched Year One and it was fascinating to see some of the shot-by-shot faithfully-recreated scenes but it was ultimately a bit pointless because it was almost the exact same story told by Batman Begins. However, TDKR has never had a proper cinematic treatment and this one was done really well.

As far as it being an unfair comparison, I don't see it. You're comparing a story and a production to another one--simple as that.

Sort of out of place but something I wanted to add... if you look at the DC Animated Universe that Timm and Dini did so much with/for (Batman:TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League, etc) you'll see the most accurate to comics version of Batman in movies/TV
No argument here--I loved all of these shows.

I wonder the same thing. MY theory is that they sell really well, and have no need to lower the price too drastically.

True, but if a post contains images over 500 pixels in height, you are obligated by internet law to quote it, multiple times if possible.

Wow, people really don't know this anymore. (Please take this as my own personal surprise, my email usage pre-dates web-mail.)

There are programs that reside on your computer that communicate with email servers via either POP or IMAP protocols (there are some finer differences, but I suspect modern users are best served by the conveniences of IMAP).

These "Email Clients" download/sync messages from the server and allow you to locally store them on your computer for both offline access and permanent archive. Any one-time corporate drone has had "Outlook" foisted upon them. It is an email client.

The generally best client is Thunderbird (Win/Mac/Lin) due to it's multiplatform nature and user friendliness. Apple Mail on OSX is quite nice as well. There's a variety of Linux clients, I'm partial to Claws-Mail. All of these support PGP/GPG encryption plugins.

As someone that posts on mobile, I can say it is a major hassle to snip posts, multiquote and do anything other than a simple post. I'm sure quite a few people post/browse the site on mobile, so that may be the issue.
