Welcome to the Steam deals thread V12, where we talk about just about everything except what games are on sale.
Please wipe your feet on the way in...

Summer Sale PSA: If you're new to Steam sales, be sure to check out both Enhanced Steam and Spoony's Official Guide to Steam Sales before you ask a question and/or spend more money than you'd care to say.

Before you ask, if a game is already a featured deal (daily/flash/community) that's the lowest it will go this sale. Feel free to buy without the worry it will get a better discount later on.

I've heard about the fabled Microcenter. It sounds like a magical land of wonder and mystery just like Narnia or Mooby's wallet.
It would be like the slums of Narnia. Parts strewn about everywhere, discount signs plastered like billboards in Times Square, and people smashed in like sardines - in the middle of the day on a Wednesday. A disaster area.

So yeah - just like Mooby's wallet.

Haul:

Divinity: Original Sin (about $30 with $2-ish in cardbux)

Grim Dawn ($2.35 in real money, the rest in cardbux)

A lot of freebies from the wonderful people here and being a filthy lurker elsewhere!

Now get over to the Divinity: Original Sin thread and post some goodness 'cause I know you people bought that game.
Divinity has "released" a little bit early. Release patch just hit.

Dynasty Warriors 8 for 9 DOTA 2 keys so ~$14.50 was a decent deal to me (I could have also bought it for 7 TF2 keys but that came out to more). I know it's FAKECAGing but for a month and a half old game from a Japanese publisher that retails for $50 I thought $15 wasn't that bad.
I'm flexible on my CAG-ness when I'm going to play it right away. 55% off Watch Dogs, for instance, was a good deal for me since I played it immediately and its sale price was only 20% off. I could have waited of course until it was $5 but if I want to play it now then I have to adjust accordingly (I call anything better than 50% acceptable for a new release).

I bought keys for $2.15-$2.18 from the market this weekend although I can't say I was really impressed by the pricing at Dispenser.tf or whatever the site is called. Either stuff priced over its USD sale prices (if I converted back what I spent on tje keys) or close enough to not make a difference. I suppose if you're buying keys directly for 20¢-30¢ less each it might be more attractive.
Well to begin with, you bought each key for $2+ instead of going the SourceOp forums and get them for less than $1.90. It also depends on the seller, you need to do some lurking to find the cheapest price and dispenser.tf is not the place for that. With Russian sellers you really need need to lurk around because sometimes the guy with the best prices for some games has no so good prices for others.

There's kind of a time factor involved with that though. Plus as Ashes would say I'm willing to pay a little bit of a premium to not have to deal with people.

For me if something is significantly cheaper than I could get it for with a minimum of fussing I'm okay with that. I don't want to go down a huge rabbit hole over it.

Well, there were glitches.. but they were in russia, and only one of the glitches was region free (before it got trade locked).

The Valiant Hearts glitch was pretty awesome.
Yeah I'm jealous of those who got valiant hearts for under a buck iirc. Was out of town when that one occurred and missed it.

Yeah, I hit the point where I'm okay paying an extra dime to avoid a couple extra steps.  I understand where some people enjoy that sort of thing though, wringing every last penny out.

I'm the same way with cards.  I work all day waiting to go home and then I'm not really willing to spend that time trying to wrangle cards for an extra 88¢ an hour.  For that, I could have stayed at work (well, I'm salary so I guess not but you know...)

Yep, it's all up to how much time you want to spend lurking . In my case i had some free time during the whole weekend so i spent most of it looking for good deals. I ended up dealing with only 3 guys who happened to have the best prices among all the Russian sellers.

I haven't tried buying keys from people for Paypal yet. They seem really fussy and I kind of hate dealing with people which is why I like checking the dispenser. Plus I imagine there's some risk involved, although I suppose that's why the fuss about the whole reputation thing in the first place, of which I have none on the TF2 trading sites.
I haven't either. The few times that I've looked into it, the sellers either charged too much for a few-key purchase (ie: they wanted to sell 10+ in one go) or seemed like twitchy paranoid fussy types who want you to jump through hoops for them.

I grabbed it on the dispenser for 2 keys (so $4.40, but $4.40 fake Steam money, not my money). I know it's not 7 cents or whatever the Russians were getting it for but Ubisoft is chintzy enough that I don't think we'll see that price for a long time and I actually will play it, so I was okay with that purchase.

Not seeing any exciting new suggestions pop up on my activity feed anymore, so here's my fakeCAG post:

Gifted from the super awesome Dr. Sasquatch: The Wolf Among Us.  Halfway through chapter 2, this is already the best game I have played this year.  Thanks, Doc!

Gifted from Our Savior GabeN & His Blessed Trading Cards shitty indie bundles:

Banished
Pinball FX2: Deadpool
Shadowrun Returns & Dragonfall

Castle Crashers + Battleblock Theater
Cloudbuilt
Foosball - Street Edition

Also got suckered into buying the Age of Empires II glitch on Amazon with...REAL MONEY!
Total spent: $2.49

Would have bought more if the stupid vote system was just deals on games that aren't featured over and over and over.  Using flash & community votes as 2nd/3rd opportunities to sell games that are Featured Daily Deals is unnecessary, especially when most of them end up back on the encore.

I believe that it CAN be worth it, I just wasn't seeing it. Sort of like a first-timer coming into this Steam Sale based on past reputation ;)

I'll keep it bookmarked but I guess it's also hard to jump on things without having a ready reserve of keys.
I ended up making the jump from dispenser to steamtrades because there tend to be better prices there and people tend to update their prices more often. Dispenser was good when I first used it, but since then it's not something I would recommend as much. It's harder to navigate and find good deals. Steam trades I just search and browse to see the best price.

They had stuff like Dead Rising 3 for 9-12 keys so that's a big savings over the store price. Buying keys off the market isn't the best way to stretch your dollar though, unless you wanted to blow through card money. For the cheaper stuff though (less than $5) sometimes it's definitely not worth it.

I've heard about the fabled Microcenter. It sounds like a magical land of wonder and mystery just like Narnia or Mooby's wallet.
I don't know that'd I go that far. But I can tell you, there's nothing better than going there and being able to actually talk shop about computers (Clock speeds, bus transfers, hard drive speeds, etc) without getting the stink eye of doom. Or being told to talk to Geek Squad (who often knows less than me).

But yea, walking in there, it just seems so haphazard. But that's why I love it. Like their wall of connectors. Every kind you could think of. It's what Radio Shack used to be.

I bought SD by that same time at $5... Dat steam glitch ;)

I liked the "competition". Too many people buying too many cards. I made good funbux.

Bought some MP games I was missing, like battleblock (awesome game), contagion and BL2 GOTY (finally!). Some SP like betrayer (surprisingly good!) and FC3+BD

The bad things were the same as every sale: too many repeats, bad community choices (by the community), no DLCs discounts (or too stingy). Also, no glitches this time :(

So, not that bad IMHO.
thanks for ur sacrfice to gearbox i though and though but did what best for my wallet hhe i wait till they put dlc collection sale

So I started playing Shadowrun Returns the day I bought it, the first time it was on sale during the Summer So-so. I'm playing it on Normal difficulty, and the question I have is this: Does it get any harder?

I just defeated the doctor, and with a full team, nobody even breaks a sweat. I loaded up the save file I had from the Union before the hospital, and only brought with 2 hires instead of 3, and it was still a cake walk.

I am fairly seasoned at turn-based strategy rpg's, and I usually play on Normal, and that presents a fair challenge. it seems like Normal on this game should be more appropriately subtitled "Not quite easy, but there's no way you're going to have to actually work to complete the story on this difficulty."

Yeah Normal is pretty easy if you're good at these sorts of things. The dr battle in particular can be really easy. My first playthrough I was short on cash and only brought the shaman and did fine. If you try a more generalist approach instead of specializing it's a bit tougher.

In 3 playthroughs I've only had one character die which was from ridiculous string of crits. With doc wagon it wasn't an issue.

It does get tougher later though so you will be using the med kits at least.

I think the game's difficulty is really dependent on the party configuration and main character. Things that are ridiculously easy for some classes aren't for others. I, too, sometimes didn't bring a full party with me to make it a little more difficult & save some hire money. I played through both campaigns with a Shaman - there were a few tough battles in Dead Man's Switch, but for the most part I think the normal difficulty is a bit on the easier side. All in all, I'd say Dragonfall had the harder, more interesting, campaign.

Hello all!

I'm thinking about getting into PC Gaming mainly because these prices are MUCH better than anything found on consoles.  Also, I've heard many times that graphics are better on PC.

What are your recommendations on a laptop under $1000 that's powerful enough to play a game like Skyrim on it's highest settings?

Thanks

The TF2 Dispenser is like Ross. There are some good deals there sometimes but you really have to dig through a bunch of junk to find them and it's a crap shoot if you'll find any at all at any given time.

If you have almost 1000 to spend on a laptop, I would recommend building your own desktop. You get more for the money than a prebuilt desktop or laptop.

EDIT: Plus, it's fun to build your own PC. You get a closeness to it, and a pride that you looked, found, and put together every part in the computer. Also helps when you go to upgrade, because you know almost everything about the computer and at least know the parts that you currently have in the computer.

I was going to start with...

First things first. To get the most for your money, build a desktop.

Since that's already been said, I get why you want to go with a laptop. Portability.

I want one for the same reason. Yes, I already have a desktop.

And if Skyrim is the main reason you want one, start here to find a card that will work for you:

Skyrim benchmarks from NotebookCheck.net

From there, start looking and waiting. Search potential sellers for computers that carry the card you want (or better) that fits your budget.

Wait for a price drop or a sale. Check SD regularly. And buy a gaming mouse.

Yours was the only response to his question without likes because even after joining the others in recommending a desktop for more bang for the $1k, you made the mistake of helping out and providing good, useful information.

I was too busy making myself lunch to like it. But just because the "most handsome guy in the Steam thread" liked it, I guess I gotta follow suit! (and well, because he actually did help him)

Hey guys,

Since I clearly haven't spent enough over the last week and a half, I'm looking at the dungeons and Dragons anthology on GamersGate.  it's currently at $4.99 which is a great deal.

Does anyone know whether these would be GOG keys or downloads or simple DRM free downloads?  If they are not GOG items, how do they compare with the GOG versions as far as ease of use/installation, patches, etc.

Also, does anyone know whether I can use a US only gift card on GG?

Thanks!

Haul:

Hitman: Aboslution

Counter Strike: GO

PayDay 2 + All Weapon DLC

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Risk of Rain

Rogue Legacy

And now i think im going to play New Vegas Ultimate since I bought it last year and never touched it on PC (put my "new" games on the backburner like a true CAG)

And I'll chime in with my usual laptop comments -

If you want a laptop, get one.  A gaming laptop will not usually be able to run games at max settings (graphics) under $1000 unless it is an older game (which Skyrim is considered older now)  so with your criteria you should be able to find something.  The main question is, will you want to play future games on max settings?

If so, then you might want to get a desktop as others have suggested or save up more money to invest in something more expensive.

I don't really know much about gaming laptops but for comparison this one is $1149:

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50/

And this is different brand refurb with similar specs for $880:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/291173862890

Don't know if either will max out Skyrim, but that's probably the kind of rig you can expect in that price range.

Just straight drm free downloads. The neverwinter nights collection includes cd keys, but the d&d anthology doesn't require them. (actually, I don't think the neverwinter nights games do either) I'd prefer to have them on gog, but $4.99 on gg -20% oops discount when they had it was just too cheap to ignore.
