Welcome to the Steam deals thread V12, where we talk about just about everything except what games are on sale.
Please wipe your feet on the way in...

Summer Sale PSA: If you're new to Steam sales, be sure to check out both Enhanced Steam and Spoony's Official Guide to Steam Sales before you ask a question and/or spend more money than you'd care to say.

Before you ask, if a game is already a featured deal (daily/flash/community) that's the lowest it will go this sale. Feel free to buy without the worry it will get a better discount later on.

No, but I did add it to my cart earlier. Steam reviews seem pretty positive. They mention it's a mobile game, but the transactions have been removed and incorporated into the game through play (not pay).

I want a new card game to hold me over until the end of time Faerie Solitaire 2.
It's Faeverse Solitaire now.

I smell a BGCQ event.

15 pages later, I'm caught up. fuck.

My top played game sorta surprised me. Eador, 94 hours. Terraria was a close second at 93.

That's not really true though, since I have around 250 in New Vegas, and probably around that or more in Skyrim. Since I load those games up with script extenders with mods, they don't show up in my playtime for some reason. That combined with the fact that the vast majority of my game playing is while I don't have an internet connection, almost none of my real playtime shows up on Steam. People SAY that offline playtime is counted, but yeah... it's not.

My rage purely comes from the fact that I suspect I will end up buying this DLC first chance I get.

Orion: Dino Horde - $14.99 $0.99

It's listed as a weeklong deal but it definitely wasn't on the weekly list before. Most probably got it in the last $0.99 sale, but here's round two for those who missed out and are hungry for some dino shooting (or human eating, whatever floats your boat).
I'd just like to give a shout out to Enhanced Steam for stopping me from trying to buy a game I already had.

I will buy Spore, but I don't know about Galactic Adventures. Some say "buy it if you'll go offline, otherwise don't", and it seems that to "go online" I need to activate the key through EA (EA, no EA) support. Anyone played that expansion?
No one seemed to reply to this. Spore's endgame gets REALLY repetitive and stale. Galactic Adventures adds so much more to it. If you like Spore, I'd recommend it.

That's not what my Steam wallet looks like...

Fixed.

I can use special font colors too.

DoTP has sealed decks, which are similar to draft, but you're locked to only 2 (unless you buy 18 more slots, NOT included in the Gold Edition). For anyone who plays TCGs with any heart, draft or 'booster' is the only way to play. It tests your skill at deck building on the fly, and it keeps you from getting rolled by people who just make broken cookie-cutter decks. It's a ton of fun for a low entry cost.

It should also be noted that DoTP is controller friendly. For $5 though, you should pick it up, it's probably simply the best way to learn MTG (whose BASIC rules haven't changed, pretty much ever, unlike D&D).

Edit: Also what is dead may never die squirrel. And Baby McDickface is all up ruining my CAG time.

After all this talk about DotP I still don't understand why I should or should not want the sealed deck expansion packs.
From the sound of it, it just opens a slot for you to put a deck in. You have to buy the virtual booster packs to fill that slot. The boosters give random cards so you're paying for a spot to then pay to fill with random cards that may or may not give you a workable or fun deck. There's no way to clear the slot once you've filled it with the boosters.

Sounds like a pass to me. You'd be better off taking the cash and playing a draft tournament at your local game shop -- at least them you can add the cards to your general collection.

Edit: You may get the boosters "free" with the paid slot, I'm not sure. Still, I'd pass on it. I get the idea of a sealed deck tournament (everyone starts on supposedly equal footing since you're all getting a sealed random pack) but in a real sealed tournament part of the draw is that you can add the cards to your collection. Since DotP 2014 doesn't allow for general deck building, you're just making a permanent random deck you may never want to use again.

Edit to my edit: You apparently get five boosters free and unlock three more in the campaign. Any beyond that that you want for your sealed slots you need to pay cold hard American money for.

Do I want to play Miasmata from the Groupees Bundle or should I trade it for something of equal value like Dead Rising 3?

Well, I mean if you're just gonna give it away for nothing, I'll trade you a copy of Dead Island Epidemic, the clearly superior zombie kart racing experience.

Bro if I can upgrade from Nvidia 9500 GT I think you can upgrade, too.

I think you actually already gave me a copy of that... wait you actually gave me a copy of Sleeping Dogs. Grats, Miasmata is yours.

Pfft, he was just making a joke. Quick someone get me a Humble Bundle Guild 2 link/gift for Miasmata!

Hearthstone is fun in small doses just don't bother spending money on it. Classic Blizzard Skinner Box.
I've spent probably dozens of hours playing it at this point and haven't paid a cent.

I don't know if this makes me a #TrueCAG for not paying money, or a #FakeCAG for playing a game...

I play about five hours a week. Stack up daily quests and ever other day do four or five games. It's fun but after a few months it's a total grind. I can't imagine how people farm that 100 gold a day from wins. The upcoming Naxx 'raid' will determine if I continue. If they price it at 5,000+ gold or something stupid I'll probably uninstall.

Totally un-Steam-related, but I think some of you garden weasels have an interest in this sort of thing. . .

So if I'm looking for a fun card game to play with someone would you guys recommend MTG or that Hearthstone thing I see people talking about? Or are they even similar? I know nothing about card games really, but figured if there's a free option that is good, it can save me some money. Also, do any or both of these require good graphic cards or can they run on crappy/older ones?
Both fun. Hearthstone will be a lot easier to get into. If you are looking to play with someone, playing co-op against the AI can provide much more lasting fun than going 1v1 in Hearthstone over and over.

Tom Francis' (Gunpoint) new game Floating Point is coming to Steam tomorrow and will be free.
Gunpoint is awesome and Tom Francis rules. It doesn't get said enough.

Awesome. I got all the MTG stuff I didn't have. The Sealed Play pack is a must. Only $5 for all 18 slots? Hell yes. Got for me and the hubby.
Do you really want all those sealed deck slots? You can edit your sealed decks with this guy.

That said, they have the free weekends for a reason. Try playing Magic 2014 for a few days and if you like it, buy it on Sunday. If you don't, don't.

I don't know how the computer and the physical version align, but the physical 2015 set of Magic: the Gathering comes out on July 17th. This sale might be them getting their last hurrah in for the 2014 set. That won't make it less playable for someone just playing the computer version though I don't know how long the DLC packs will be available. Any M:tG Duels of the Plainswalkers 2013 players want to weigh in?
2013's stuff is still all buyable and playable. Same with 2012. Neither of those seem to get sales anymore, though, so this might be a good time to pick this one up. And yes, 2015 will be out pretty soon (maybe the same time as the physical set?).

After all this talk about DotP I still don't understand why I should or should not want the sealed deck expansion packs.
I don't think you would or should want them at all. You can always try it out while it is free and also try the deckbuilder mod and if you want more slots but are not comfortable using the mod... then it might be worth it.

I'm not sure if Magic has the same issue (probably) but the biggest problem with Hearthstone is that since it's been out for a while new players will get stomped on once they try to rank past 20ish.  And 'casual' mode is filled with people who tank their win/loss rating so they can farm out the 100 gold win total 'mini-quest.'  So... you're almost always going to be playing with someone who has a massive card advantage over you.  Yes, there are players who can get to the top with basic cards but they represent maybe the top 10% of the player base.

It was $2 from Amazon for the complete pack during the Winter sale, hope you and everyone else picked it up despite all the DRM whining people had. It has a campaign, deck building, draft tournaments all SP or MP. It is not nearly as complex as MTG as far as cards, but can be more complex in terms of gameplay and metagaming. You can sit down and play a single game in just a few minutes. It is pretty much my goto quick time waster. And the devs continue to make slight balancing tweaks to the game.

The beginning of the month can be rough because that is when the ladder resets. I will say that a little bit of netdecking and a lot of playing the meta can go a long way. Last month was my first full season, and I got to rank 5 just playing a cheap priest deck with no legendaries and a druid deck with one. Most people are playing handlock, zoo, or shockadin right now, so a decent midrange deck with some board clears can rank up pretty easily.

Well it's not just the legendaries it's the rares and even non-basic expert cards, too.  Someone completely new will be at a significant disadvantage.

But the "whining" had a point. There's no reason to tack on additional 3rd party DRM with limited activations when you are selling a game on Steam. That's an antiquated way of thinking that only some Europeans living in the last century still insist on doing. Worse yet, the developer initially did not list that DRM on the Steam store page, refused to do it when called out on and only after many months of badgering finally did have it listed.

If pointing that sort of thing out is whining then so be it. Personally, it's something I want to know about. I happen to be one of those who bought it before the draconian additional DRM was disclosed and I'm still not happy about it.

Each Duels of the Planeswalkers is entirely independent from the others, so the only thing you'd "Lose" with a new version coming out is presumably the majority of people who play in online matchmaker games would move to the new one. There's also no direct deck overlap between the games. There are some similar decks but no 1:1 duplicates. No need to be concerned about the older ones becoming obsolete unless you do a lot of multiplayer with strangers.

That said, they inexplicably no longer sell the first of the modern Duels of the Planeswalkers (the one from 2010. The real first DotP was '98) for whatever reason. Which is kind of a shame because out of all of them that one had the most iconic decks. Blue asshole control/discard, red burn, big green creatures, etc. The decks in the other games definitely aren't bad, it's just that none of them were as much the standard staple for each color.

Been talking an awful lot about cards today. On that topic I guess I'll say I played a little Dead Man's Draw. Not the same kind of card game as MTG or Hearthstone but seems enjoyable. Looks worth the $2.50.

Also this. Spectromancer's pretty good stuff. You don't do deckbuilding in it either (Not for reals deckbuilding at least) but it's a damn fine card game. Complexity's roughly above Hearthstone and under Magic. I'd definitely give a thumbs up to that one too.

Thanks for the heads up. Tremor Games still has a bunch in stock, so I might try to get it from there.

Anybody interested in seeing some extremely blatant plagiarism?

Do the world a favor and contact whoever the hell needs to be contacted in order to get this person sued into the ground.

I don't know if plagiarism is the right term for whatever they're doing.  Either way, Gabe is a big boy, he can take care of this if he wants.  Valve certainly doesn't need or deserve consumers fighting their battles for them.

I'll ask again (maybe Idiot can answer this) about TSW...

Should I buy the issues in order? I just received 1200 bonus points. A lot of people state issue #7 is the best, but I read they should be played in order and after I ended all the game content. I know I'm too far from it (still at kingsmouth), but I don't think I want any boost or cosmetic stuff from the store...

I'd use the points for Issue #9, which just came out, and get the Massive Edition when it's on sale for #5-7. It'll give you 2 keys, so you can sell the base TSW key and just add the extra content to your account.

Eh, of the issues I have, and have played through, there's no point to playing them in order. Is there a "better" order of them to play through? Maybe. Does it matter, and are they a connected storyline? Nah.

Just look around, see which issue has the stuff you think is the coolest (depending on what people think, what areas the missions take place in, what rewards the missions give, etc), and grab that one. A few of the issues add new auxiliary weapons, like the flamethrower and whip, so if you're interested in one of those, there you go.

And yet you have the word "candy" in the title of your game and it's punishable by death.

After looking furthur into it only certain works can be used. Half-Life is not one of them and the list of approved content is slim.

This is the list of approved Fan fiction that can be sold under that program.

https://kindleworlds.amazon.com/worlds?ref_=kww_faq_nav_1

Anything else if sold for profit would still break copyright laws.
