Judging by how he writes on Twitter and the previous messages, that was far from a serious threat and I'd find it hard to believe that Valve/Steam would have taken it seriously. It's definitely unprofessional mind and if there is nothing more to the story, I feel it's undeserved.
That's like threatening to kill your boss and wondering why you got fired.

There's the world of vidya game streamers/developers/internet celebs and there's the real world. As a lawyer, if I went in and told my superiors, a judge, another lawyer, or... anyone really... that I was going to kill them (even if I was mildly joking) I would be reported to my state bar association. I would, at the very least, have my license to practice suspended temporarily and possibly even revoked permanently. That is, I wouldn't be able to be a lawyer anymore. It's not like this guy is being banned from being a game developer. So, yeah, the 'punishment' wasn't excessive and as I said, in the real world in any other profession the consequences would be far more severe.

Death threats are not funny AT ALL. You can't tell a serious threat from a joke on social media, and there are too many cases of people following through (or trying to) on such threats. There's no way to tell someone's state of mind from 140 characters, so it's always better to err on the side of caution and say it's possible, however unlikely.

I'd go as far to say as the dev wanted to get his game pulled from Steam, and figured this would be the fastest way to do so.

I could see the dev throwing a fit via private communication and telling Steam to pull his game and getting his wish more than I could see Steam reacting in timely fashion to a Tweet.

Thing is, it isn't. In the world of Magic the Gathering, which shares the same feeder system of vidya games- streamers/internet celebs, twitch stream, etc...There was a guy a couple years back that after something went badly for him, he threatened to rape the head of Wizards of The Coast's organized play program. He was immediately banned for life from all DCI events. Had this been the guy's job, he'd have had his rights to purchase from Wizard's cut, and any sanctioning of games in his store would be immediately suspended.

It may be the internet, but you don't make real world threats like that against real people and not expect a swift responce from the party you threatened in a public way.

" I was just joking and playing internet badass" doesn't fly. Ever.
It's even worse when you're a professional and not a customer. Then you're doubly damned.

I'll take SOL: Exodus, please.
If you still have Finding Teddy, I'd love to try it out.
Can I get this please
Sent, sent, and sent. Have fun!

I made an Extra Life donation page, too. Will be giving away Steam keys and whatnot. Might hold an auction like Ltrain did.
Yay! Best of luck to you! :D

If anyone wants a game made by a madman and no longer available to purchase on Steam, simply donate $1 to my Extra Life page (in support of Seattle Children's) and you will be entered into a raffle to win Paranautical Activity! OMGZORS!!!!

Do you guys see anything wrong with this?

Yea...I see a lot a things wrong with that AND Valve's response to it was entirely reasonable.

What's weird to me is YOUR response to this situation.

Yeah, do we know that the guy didn't pull his own game from Steam? I mean, that would be a record-time response from Steam on... well, anything.

... this sort of reply sounds like the people at the game's forums who are saying the dev's twitter was hacked. He didn't pull it, he has no reason to do so.

Here's the real victim.

That's the game's main programmer.

Would just like to clarify that this wasn't my exact full post and after a small discussion, I am in agreement with the majority of you.

So, AtGames will be dumping GameFly's digital distribution after November 7th and reinstating Direct2Drive.com afterwards. They mention in the email about digital downloads, but I would assume that would mean access to game keys as well. If you have any unused keys there, might want to get them organized soon.

Dear Dumbass,

Thank you for being a customer of GameFly. We hope you have enjoyed our digital download service. If you have visited our digital site, you should be aware that we have sold the digital download business to AtGames which is set to re-launch Direct2Drive.com.

GameFly will continue to operate the digital business on behalf of AtGames through November 7th, and you will be able to re-download your digital games at GameFly only through that date. After November 7th, all download activity will be controlled by Direct2Drive.com. If you have any questions on downloading, please contact us.

To enable Direct2Drive.com to provide customer support, certain account information and your digital purchase history will be available on the Direct2Drive.com digital site. Neither your password nor your payment information will be transferred. If you wish to opt out of receiving future communications, please let us know by November 1st and we will update your account accordingly.

Sincerely,

The GameFly Team

"Yes, we have removed the game's sales page and ceased relations with the developer after he threatened to kill one of our employees,"

HA! One of our employees. It's fuck ing GabeN, the goddamn co-founder. pcmasterrace is going to destroy this guy...
That dev dude needs a good ass beating about once a week. Act like a childish bitch and you should get treated like one.

After reading the article. The poor dude just can't wait to burn his bridge with Valve. Still going on about Valve's "monopoly." Maybe he is confusing Steam with McDonald's.

Only problem is - he threatened the freaking Co-Founder of the most powerful PC digital gaming service around.

No digital service's gonna wanna deal w/ this guy anymore.

At the end of the day.. people are held accountable in the world they post in... next time, he should have used a fake account to voice his threats :)  Gamersgate continues!  (drops mic and walks away)
