Tales from the Pawn Shop(s)!

Anyone know of any shops like this in the Brampton/Mississauga/Toronto area? I'd love to check in on some of these and cash in on these deals. Unfortunately haven't seen any shops around here like that. =(

I stopped into my local pawn shop today to ask them if they had any wonky PS2's they could sell me for cheap to take advantage of the Gamestop $100 deal, but they said they didn't have any.

I also tried the one local game shop to no avail as well. The clerk was originally going to give me one for $10, but once they tested the one broken system and it read a disc, they upped the price to $15. Then, they said the owner told them to NOT sell the broken systems at all, since they get $20-25 or more on Ebay.

Oh well...guess I'm sitting out this chance to make a couple hundred in credit at Gamestop's expense.

$6 score of the year I think at least
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne with the soundtrack.
Case and manual are in good condition.. The case has a little wear and tear and a few sticky marks but other then that its all good.

DDR Mario Mix (with big box, mat, game)-$20

Passed on a RE2 (PS1) w/ no manual for $6. The price for DDR Mario used to be $150, but now it's around $50 :(

Good finds today!
$9 total

A little grimey, but I just need a expantion pak for PD and my donkey kong 64 :c

Well, as much as I wanted to find the Personas for PS1 at a pawn, I caved & bought a 2-disc Persona 2 set from Play N Trade. It has no manual & the inserts are printed (VERY nicely, I only noticed due to the white insides). The price was decent, though. $19.99. Does that make me a pawn failure? :(

I picked up a very nice looking copy of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! for the NES for $3.99. I happened to go in there just as one of the employees was holding a stack of 5 NES games, and the lady wasn't sure if they sold video games, and I pointed it out to the lady (probably they marked it up just for me :D)

But ya, finally found a quality spot that sells cheap games! The goodwill store I was trying rarely had any good games.

I passed on 1943 and Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt cartridge at the same price

They had a bunch of Genesis games in Box, but they were all liscenced games (Primarily Disney and Kids WB stuff) and I don't own a Genesis anyway (Though I don't own a NES either :p)
is 1943 better than 1942 or is it basically the same thing?
I'd assume 1943 is a sequel, I honestly don't know though..

I never get great deals at the local pawnshops. Usually OK but nothing worth bragging about until today. I bought a copy of Crimson Skies for $6 and inside was an X-Box 12 month membership. Plugged it in and I'm good til 2010. WOOT!

IIRC, back when the original xbox came out, there were many games that had "contests" where you could find a 12 month cardin it. Im not sure if he's stating that he found a old 12 month card, or if someone just stuck a new one in it

No, it was probably one of the copies that came with the Xbox Live subscription kit and the guy that had it never used the year subscription. So that would explain why the code was still good.

Easy way to tell is that the one bundled with the kit has no barcode on the back of the insert & has "Not for Resale" on the bottom front.

Today I got...
:ps3:
$15.00- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots(complete, mint)

I don't have a PS3 yet, so I may end up selling it. By the time I get one, MGS4 will be a Greatest Hits title anyway.

yes, yes it does:), figuring you have Tampa to yourself (although $20 isnt bad if it went to PNT). P2 was reprinted 1x or 2x, I saw it around Tampa quite a bit, and then P3 hit and it away. Never seen P1 at a pawn, but P2 will prob pop up again, especially since you currently have a monopoly. Tampa pawn finds seem pretty easy right now, I have a friend who has gotten 3 Final Fantasy VIIs between two of the same pawn shops since I left.

I have gotten 2 FFVIIs since you left. I dont have a Monopoly. Remember BGA? I haven't even BEEN pawn hopping is 7 weeks. Cash has been short. These finds are just random stops. The flea Market is being better to me than pawns right now.

Yup, That was the deal, one of the "Not for Resale" games that was in a Gold Kit. I'm still giddy. Yeah I know I'm a loser.

Had a pretty good run at my local shops

:ps2: 3 PS2 Network Adapters w/o disc
$20

:360: Bioshock LE
$15

:gc: Zelda Twilight Princess
$5.99

I also found a huge used book store that I had no idea about. Was really overpriced on alot of stuff, but had an incredible used selection.

:ps2: Karaoke Revolution Country w/2 Mics
$20
:ps2: Rez
$4.45
:gc: Beyond Good and Evil
$7.95

Lastly, lucked out on a Orange Box penny guide at Best Buy.

Traded in 15 .01 guides today at the pawn shop and in return got

Guitar Hero Aerosmith (complete/mint)
Tactics Ogre Knights of the Lodis (cart only)

I think I made out pretty well for .15 :)

I've been looking around town for deals and I totally realized something. I have been forgetting to check the local pawn shop. I should look in there sometime this coming week.

:applause: You've GOT to let us know the name of the pawn shop (I pray that it's a chain!)

^Chain prices are completely different.

There are 3 EZ cash pawns within 5 miles of me. One prices all last gen at $10, all current gen $15, doesn't take older games, and all games have to be perfect condition and complete.

Another sells games at various prices (mostly based on ebay) and takes any condition of games, and any gen.

The best one prices all games at $4, takes any condition and any generation. (this includes new games!)

Stopped by two family owned pawn shops by me and picked up

:gba: Breath of Fire $9.99
:gba: Golden Sun $9.99
:ps2: Growlancer Generations (2-disc) $9.95
:wii: Boom Blox $14.99

everything was nice and complete.

This was at Better than a Pawn Shop. Its not a chain just a single store. They give $1 per guide. Guitar hero and tactics ogre were both $10 and I offered both for $15 and he took it.

Thanks, sad thing is I turned down about 50 other games that were $2, some pretty decent, was running out of time and had just gotten 5 games at HV so I figured I was good for the day; I try not to hoard whenever possible

Got a MS brand Xbox 360 wireless network adapter this morning for $15. Recently got a Guitar Hero III complete game (no guitar) for the 360 for $5 from the same shop.

Ahh, a pawnshop thread... these places are my lifeblood. I'll save you some of the scores I've gotten previously though and just start with this week's haul. I gotta say, I'm getting a little frusterated at how easily some of you guys keep coming across FFVII... I have this weird bit of luck where I make a hitlist, and can find one of the games on it within the week(the day after I made it, I came across game #1, Fatal Frame, the very next afternoon). FFVII is basically the last one on the list, and I CANNOT for the life of me find one!

-Naruto Box Sets Volumes 1-6 for $60
-DBZ Box Sets Season 3,4,5 $30.00
-Mario Kart 64/Perfect Dark/Banjo Kazooie for $3 each
-Ico(Mint condition which is always a perk) $5
-Metroid II and Castlevania Legends for $3

There was also a 3D0 console with like 10 CIB games there too for $60.00, but I just had to pass. I think I might need to drive out to one of the other pawn shops, I haven't been there in a couple weeks and they always have good current-gen prices(they sell all their Xbox 360 games for $15, and I mean ALL from those crappy Burger King games to Battlefield BC)

Oh and hey, not quite pawn related, but I saw someone on here mention "play n trade". The name sounded familiar so I looked it up and there's one about an hour away from me. It seems that they have older games, but is it worth the drive price-wise? There's an independent store about 30 min away from me who sells older games, but their prices are roughly what you'd get on ebay sans shipping(I believe he said he uses half.com as a pricing guideline), is that roughly what I'm looking at if I go to play-n-trade, or a bit more/less?

Depends on the PNT. They are all indepently owned and operated, some standardize prices or go by their comp and some ebay prices. It really depends, however, I have found if you get to know the store owner, things get a bit cheaper.
