The 2013-14 NFL Thread

Denver RB Willis McGahee was cut the other day to leave the job up to Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball, which isn't a huge surprise as he's been more injury prone lately for them.

The Ravens cut FB Vonta Leach after not being able to get a restructured deal done.

I don't hate it. It looks kinda cool. It sort of reminds me of the bird nest stadium they built in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics.
Yep, I like the look of it, especially for a stadium with a retractable roof. The video screen going around the middle is a bit weird, especially if they use it for Twitter hashtags.

I kinda like the look of it. I think the Twitter feed is dumb, but I imagine they can change that up however they want. I guess I'll see it enough to get tired of it when the Panthers visit.

They says it's a twitter feed but you know that thing will be used mainly for advertising with a tweet or two sprinkled in each quarter. I like that clear ceiling they are going for that lets the sun light in. Much improved over the dark dome stadium look.

Aaron Hernandez was led away in handcuffs this morning.

In other news, I got the Ravens game broadcast Blu-ray a few days ago. They thankfully didn't include all the blackout coverage. Just the initial silence and two sideline reports. Though I wish they included the Ravens radio broadcast as an alternative to Dan Dierdorf and Phil Simms.

I would've liked to have had the radio broadcast as an option as well. I know the description said it was just the broadcasts but I was kinda hoping for something extra. Don't know what but something. Oh well I used amazon gift cards I got for it so I didn't spend any real money.

I had gotten the 2000 SB set a while back and it was essentially the same, just the game broadcasts. No radio or anything.

In other news, Chip Kelly is banned from coaching college football until 2015. Big shocker, eh?

you think he is going to be as lucky as ray lewis? lol
Nope. Listening to the courtroom feed, they basically have everything but the murder on film.

What a colossal moron. I feel dirty having spent the past few years rooting for this scumbag.

They just said they have him on video in his own home with the murder weapon in his hand.

World's stupidest criminal?

He left a piece of chewed gum at the murder scene.  I mean, has this guy never even watched Law & Order?

Edit:  Okay, it might not be that bad, but something similar, I didn't hear it that way.  Basically, he's fucked.

On football side of things (my heart goes out to the victims family), my Patriots are done for this season possibly.

-Letting Welker go
-Grunks Health
-Did not resign Lloyd (he was just OK last year, but compared to this years roster, he looks like a superstar)
-Receiving core is weak

+With hope and prayers, if anyone can deliver us from these dark days in New England, it's the saint and chosen one....Tim Tebow.

Mark this post for the start of the NFL season, because Tim Tebow will bring us to Eden.

This gif shows the moment he knew he was going down:

Seriously, what a dumbass. 23 years old, with all the money and talent in the world, and he fucks it up.

The DA said Lloyd was shot multiple times in the groin, arm, side, chest and back
And they say they have him on tape with the gun in his hand saying, "You can't trust anyone anymore". No shit.

I'd say that's overstating it a bit. The Patriots are still easily the best team in that division. There's no doubt that losing Hernandez will hurt them on the field, but the Patriots' philosophy has always been that no one player (other than, naturally, Tom Brady) is irreplacable.

Anyone else think that ESPN has gone overboard with trying to protect the NFL with this whole incident? Clearly there is a problem considering this is the third person who has dealt with murder charges in a 14 year period (and let's be real, everyone who has been charged committed the crime).

Maybe the NFL needs to get these guys of roids and HGH. Baseball always gets dragged through the mud for roids, but their athletes aren't raging and killing people (except Urbina, who tried and failed).

I dunno. Miami was a sleeper WC pick before this crap started. If Tannehill proves, Miami could take over.

Miami was a sleeper WC pick
We've heard that before.

I'm certainly not egotistical enough to declare that there's no chance the Pats lose the AFC East, anything's possible. But they're the favorite every year for a reason, and I don't think the loss of Hernandez is going to completely change their fortunes. I don't see Belichick letting it be a distraction.

But Miami was pretty decent last year and greatly improved the team. Like I said, it all rests on Tannehill. If he becomes a minimum B+ QB, Miami will challenge for the division.

And while I don't expect them to compete for a playoff spot, I do think Buffalo will improve as well.

Pretty decent last year was good enough for a 7-9 season, 5 wins behind the Pats. I see no reason to think they've made up that much of a difference even with the signings they've made. I could be wrong, but I guess we'll see.

Miami didn't make up 5 games with their signings, but the Pats also lost 2-3 games with all that has happened. Their top 4 receiving threats right now all finished last season on IR. They will need to rely on Steven Ridley but who knows if he has the ability to do that, especially if the passing game falters early on. There's only so much Brady can do.

A large part depends on Gronk. If he can play 3/4 of the season, they might be able to stem the tide. But relying on him after the offseason he had is very risky.

Even if the Pats make the playoffs, I doubt they make it out of the wild card round. The Ravens, Broncos, Bengals, Texans, and Colts are all better than them.

You could set your watch by the annual "Pats reign in the AFC East is over!!" proclomations in July and August.  Then come December, they're at the top of the division again.   We've heard this song and dance before, and the Patriots have won plenty of times with questionable receiving corps.  See most seasons before 2007.  The Patriots scored 557 points last year, by far the most in the league.  They have some to spare.

Until they actually lose the division one of these years, they're the favorite.  Maybe this is the year, but I doubt it.

I don't get why Miami being a wildcard team means that New England won't win the division.
Miami became a sleeper WC pick after the draft. Considering how top-heavy the AFC is, it will likely take 10 wins to get a WC. With all that has happened in NE, many predict the Pats to max out at 10-11 wins. If that happens, the division might come down to tiebreakers, and Miami has always given the Pats fits.

and Miami has always given the Pats fits.
If going 5-15 against them the last 10 years is fits, than yes. It always puzzles me that this misconception persists. The Dolphins did stage a few memorable upsets of the Pats in the 2000s, but they haven't beaten them once since 2009. Brady's career record against the Phins is 16-6.

For the record, I'm not trying to come across as an arrogant Pats fan, so I'm sorry if that's the case. I've just gotten used to people declaring their run over for years now, always with comical results. Bottom line for me is that their offense could have scored 100 fewer points last year and it still would have been good for third in the NFL. They have significant room to regress and still be an elite offensive team, and they have a young D which has been improving the last few seasons.

You better hope their D improves a ton in this offseason bv!  Brady is a phenom, but I'm worried about losing the top 4 targets in just one offseason and what that can do to a team.  I'm sure they will compete as always but it definitely isn't an untouchable Pats team this year (or at least it seems that way so far this offseason, like you said you never know).

Von Miller of the Denver Broncos is facing a four-game suspension. Even though it's unclear what policy he's violated, the NFLPA has said it has nothing to do with steroids or banned substances.

Of course Von Miller has denied any wrongdoing and is appealing this, so we'll see what happens and if it stands or not.

Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin has tore his ACL in training camp and will be out for the season.

Ravens TE Dennis Pitta has suffered a hip injury in camp that required surgery and will have him out for at least the season opener. It's being said that he only had a dislocated hip, but the Ravens fear he might have a hip fracture, which would take him out for the season.

Yeah that sucks hard. Flacco's two favorite targets in the end zone from last season in Boldin and Pitta gone. Not too sure about the Shiancoe pick up. I mean they needed someone but, shit.
