Can I use the $5 monthly coupon on gift cards?

Yes you can in store but not online please note not all gift cards will apply to this rule.

I have a $XX.xx pre-owned reward certificate, and I want to use it on a B2G1 transaction. Should I?
It depends. If the three games are equal value, do not use your certificate. The value of the certificate would be applied to the free game, which would not benefit you. If one game is more expensive, you can use the certificate to make it the same value as the other two games ($5 reward certificate applied to transaction with two $10 games and one $15 game would make all three games $10).

TERMINOLOGY AND LINGO:
ASL/SL: Assistant Store Leader, Store Leader; manager positions at GS.
B2G1: Buy two, get one free.
GS: GameStop
JD: Junior detective, an employee who is out to get someone
LP: Loss Prevention; this is the department that actually bans accounts after being flagged.
TC/TiC: Trade credit.
TIV/TV: Trade in value, or what a game currently trades for. When posting a TV for a game, always use the base value.

Went easy on B2G1F this time around no thanks to the mass closures of stores (like 4 of em near me...), BUT I did manage to come across:

Middle-Earth Shadow of War Definitive Edition PS4 (no voucher; 2-discs)
The Surge PS4 (have the sequel also on PS4, so now my collection is complete)
Vikings Wolves of Midgard PS4 (have XB1 version, but I prefer blue cover art with blue casing)

Another month, another excruciating journey to use yet another $5 voucher.

They closed one of my closest stores, it was a small store but always has a good selection and was one of the more well presented stores in the area. I used my February coupon at the end of the month, I did not think the closures would matter but definitely is oddly more annoying than I anticipated having fewer options.

355 was indeed too good to pass up.
Fyi if you’re trading in a slim ps5 they did ask for the horizontal stand clips (first time they ever asked). I happened to have them. No biggie if you don’t, they take $1-2 off the trade value.

That high trade in value on the PS5 Slim is tempting if I can keep the disc drive to use in a PS5 Pro. 🤔
I created an account just to ask this same thing - has anyone tried trading in a PS5 slim without the plate that would be missing from removing the disc drive? If so I'd absolutely go for it.

I'm in DFW, where Gamestop is based, and they just closed their marquee store, the one they used for marketing and staff training. A handful of others were closed as well.

I know we've been ringing this bell for years, but it's not looking good for them.

Physical retail in general has fallen on hard times.

I actually have a second set of black cover plates on my PS5 that I got from Sony. That’s what got me thinking about it.

Yeah I think we are nearing the end. When I went to pick up my preorder of MH Wilds the other day they only had 1 other copy left besides mine. I remember when they would have a huge stack of copies whenever a big new game just released.

It was similar for Kingdom Come 2 and Space Marine 2. Finding a physical copy in a store was difficult.

They'd be dead already if it wasn't for meme stock status. They're just another zombie corporation that was kept afloat during low interest periods plus "irrational exuberance" during COVID.

I only shop there out of "hey, we're at a place literally next to one" convenience or they're having clearance level deals.

They tried literally every stupid fad idea since 2020, the pro membership has contracted to nearly nothing of value, and they struggle to keep in stuff people want versus being the Gamer™ Hot Topic.

No matter which location I go to, they're shelves are only slightly less depressing than a Target display. Which are usually 80% empty near me.

I'm awash in local used entertainment stores, chains that are decades old, and even they're contracting (mainly due to building demolition or lease issues).

If I want an old title, I go to my FLGS or game convention. If I want modern, I wait for an Amazon, Best Buy, etc. discount.

Come PS6, Switch 2 OLED, and Xbox Subscription Box #3, physical games will be order online only boutique items. I fully expect the big box retailers contribute to downsize, while people scamper to used media to be able to have entertainment without subscriptions.

I'm content to fully take advantage of them for as long as they're around. It's just a cheaper option (with some finesse needed admittedly) than buying games from other retailers, and flipping and what not is what has made it easy to buy the latest consoles.

I'll definitely have to consider winding down once the Switch 2 is out though. That is my last big goal.

I tried my trade credit card a week ago and it didn't work. Checked the website for card Balance and even the phone number and nothing shows. Did someone say recently that calling corporate would help remedy this? I think it's a trade credit from trading in a PS5 controller but I don't remember when that occured

I just need Gamestop to last long enough for me to trade in my fat PS5 for a Limited edition PS5 Pro. Shipping sucks and I don't want to risk selling it in person.

I stepped into GameStop, the fluorescent lights buzzing above as I made my way to the counter. The store smelled like plastic wrap and desperation—just how I remembered it. I had one goal: pick up a booster pack of surging sparks using my $5 monthly coupon.

The cashier, a lanky kid with a detective’s intensity in his eyes, greeted me.

"Hey, man, just this?" he asked, holding up the booster.

"Yeah," I nodded. "I’ll be using my monthly coupon. My phone number is—" I rattled it off.

He punched it in, squinted at the screen, then nodded. I thanked him, told him to have a good day, and turned toward the door, booster pack in hand.

Then, I heard it.

"Sir!"

I turned. The kid’s eyes narrowed. "That’ll be one more dollar."

I blinked. "Huh?"

"The booster is $6 now."

I stared at him. I could have sworn they were still $5. That was the whole reason I was here.

For a moment, we just stood there. I was already near the door, the booster in my hand, my brain still catching up to the fact that inflation had betrayed me once again.

Then he hit me with it. The accusation.

"Sir, Did you just try to leave without paying?"

I looked him in the eyes, completely deadpan.

"For a dollar?"

His posture stiffened. "It’s still theft."

I exhaled sharply, walked back to the counter, reached into my wallet, and slid a single dollar bill across the counter.

"There."

He hesitated, then slowly took it.

I grabbed my booster, turned, and walked out without another word.

Inflation wins again.

Well done...well freaking done...

stories like these make me miss GameStop less and less everyday

will Gamestop still be around by the time Switch 2 launches this year? hmm

They literally have an mailing list prepared to let people know when they can preorder 😅

If they were anywhere close to being in enough trouble that they can't hold on for a few more months, we'd know about it by now lol

The most annoying thing the employees do is beg you to buy the protection plan. Then they get rude when you tell them no.

In my industry, reps have a goal of 65% protection plans. If they don’t hit their minimums, they are fired for poor performance. Most sales jobs have KPIs over employees heads.

They survive on this (it seems)..new console = purchase with "membership" only = new members = more $

Kind of seems the cycle of things, between new consoles they bumble around with the latest "new" idea (all while cutting membership benefits)

I could be wrong:LOL:

I simply state the facts as I had bought it in the past many times, with refurbished products being acceptable replacements, I no longer feel the value is there. I leave it at that and I do not know why they get so offended and take it so personal. Was the program abused, probably, but I won’t buy into a program that just gives me another defective unit. Honestly if they had true techs working the refurb process and poured money into that, there is sooooooo much money in repair it’s insane.

That is very true if you had a repair business for them tied into gamestops. A legitimate one that would definitely help generate business. Especially if they made if affordable. They could also do protection plan bundles like squaretrade? Whatever it was called did on ebay.

My battery on my vita went due to sonys updates and squaretrade fixed it for me. I'd definitely use them again for that.

They will be taking preorder soon, that will buy them enough time.
Here's the rub, and why I recommend *not* pre-ordering with GameStop.

They've been closing stores at no-notice pretty much to the staff. Would be a big bummer to lose your pre-order or have it shipped god knows where come launch because Lord Dogfood did another downsizing right before a quarterly report to make the line go up.

This was on a new PS5 game. The woman was saying "well I strongly recommend it because I would hate for you to break your game and have to rebuy it". I was rolling my eyes while she kept going on and on about it.

"You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain"

Before a place by me became GS (long, long ago) it was a Funcoland. I recall going in there and they would have a printed out list of all the games (NES and Genesis if memory serves) and the trade values. Here was the thing, if you traded in and got store credit they doubled the amount or you could just take the cash.

(sigh) those were the days

You didn't know where you were thennnnnn

Boys were girls and women were men

We could sure use a man like miyamoto again

There weren't no save state

Controllers had a lot of weight

Gee our old ps2 ran great

Those were the days?

Of all the companies GameStop absorbed over the years, Funcoland was the biggest loss. They were truly unique in the video game market. Between carrying everything retro as far back as NES, and making a point to have the means and invitation to be able to let you try any used game before you bought it? Man, that was great stuff.
