GS FAQ

Where is the weekly ad?
They ended the weekly ad for more rotation of deals. Please check the homepage and deal link for the current deals.

I can't find a trade in value for an item?
It might not be tradable or calling a store to find the value may be the only option.

How many copies of a game can I trade in?
You are allowed to trade in 4 copies of the same game (same system) within a rolling 30 day period.

Are there trade limits?
Yes, $500 cash minus some electronic trade ins and or $2000 trade credit in a rolling 30 day period.

Can I use the $5 monthly coupon on gift cards?

Yes you can in store but not online please note not all gift cards will apply to this rule.

I have a $XX.xx pre-owned reward certificate, and I want to use it on a B2G1 transaction. Should I?
It depends. If the three games are equal value, do not use your certificate. The value of the certificate would be applied to the free game, which would not benefit you. If one game is more expensive, you can use the certificate to make it the same value as the other two games ($5 reward certificate applied to transaction with two $10 games and one $15 game would make all three games $10).

TERMINOLOGY AND LINGO:
ASL/SL: Assistant Store Leader, Store Leader; manager positions at GS.
B2G1: Buy two, get one free.
GS: GameStop
JD: Junior detective, an employee who is out to get someone
LP: Loss Prevention; this is the department that actually bans accounts after being flagged.
TC/TiC: Trade credit.
TIV/TV: Trade in value, or what a game currently trades for. When posting a TV for a game, always use the base value.

Knock on wood I guess, but I'll believe it when I see it when it comes to double dipping getting killed lol. They revamped the website like twice or so in order to make the monthly coupon more limited on what you could spend it on, and yet double dipping is still a thing. I'm entirely convinced that they don't know how to permanently get rid of it without creating a lot more work for themselves

All they would have to do is make them in-store coupons to kill it. They literally started as that until the pandemic came and GS updated them to work on the website. Notice how they say "in-store only"?

People gon' get it killed. There used to be people who'd buy a game and trade it in right then if the game had a higher trade value than the purchase price, if you can believe that.
Those were the days. Flipped between Gamestops. Then you had Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, Best Buy, FYE, Game Crazy to flip between. I got banned from Blockbuster for trading into many times.

Let's see if GameStop survived 2025 at all. They mainly fence Chinese made garbage and a dwindling set of physical releases. The Switch 2 being an expensive flop (not due to anything in their control) will likely be the last thing for them.

I have very low confidence in the company. Maybe it's just my region, but any time I stop in one, their selection is abysmal and their prices are easily beat elsewhere.

But the moon… apes strong… diamond hands… that was all for nothing?!?!?

You forgot Lord Dogfood.

But yea, while the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent, we're into extreme irrationality that I don't think even venture capital boondoggles will be sustainable. We all know they're a hollow house of cards riding retail investor hype. If those chads have to become paper handed virgins to pay their grocery bill, then the hype train will finally reach the station.

I very much agree. Ever since they started using stores as online order fulfillment hubs, stock at local stores has been terrible. I guess a sale is a sale, but if there's nothing in store to buy I imagine that reduces the people looking to come in and trade things in which reduces inventory across the board. The meme stock shit saved them in the short term, but not sure they'll be here for PS6 gen. And if they keep closing stores to pivot to being an online retailer, then they are dead in the water. Their online experience is terrible and people won't start mailing in trade ins so they won't ever have consistent stock.

I sell a few games on eBay from time to time and just sold an original Xbox game, and the shipping address is a Gamestop location... very curious if it's just an employee using the store as an address or... what. Game is KOTOR II and their cost was like $15 all in so can't imagine it's for their retro stock.

That's funny. Maybe you're now one of their new warehouse distributors. 🤣

Their shipping charges always turn me away. Well that and their best deals are rarely in stock at any of the stores near me.

That’s bizarre, send it with unnecessary cleaning crud all over the disc and hand write the cover sheet with “new”. Could include an insert for a $20 warranty as well.

Tellin' y'all, be real careful putting down money on something you *really* want at a GameStop. Can you imagine walking into one of those stores last week to pre-order a Switch 2 (assuming it had happened) and then roll up a week or so later and find it shuttered?

I have $400 in credit from trading in my launch PS5. The plan was to preorder a switch 2, and now with that console being a flop, not sure what to do with the credit. Maybe a couple fancy collector editions upcoming?

cool, i never knew this. I'll try it next month.

I also think you can double dip in store as well. I did it accidentally a few days ago, only works if you have two gamestops close to each other. If you use a coupon, it doesn't remove it from their system right away. I went to another gamestop to purchase and they applied the $5 monthly promo again, I didn't ask, they just saw it on my account still and applied it.
didn’t work for me, i went to two gamestop’s within 30 minutes and the $5 monthly was already gone at the second store, but the other method of buying something instore and online on the same day does work

I do not understand the narrative that is forming that the SW2 is going to be a flop. For those that get it and enjoy it, I would hardly consider it a flop to them. Think how many games that have come out that those that are they say it is awful, but you have a good time with?

Most recently, Star Wars Outlaws I had a great time with and I didn't get all the compaints about DA Veilguard or AC Shadows either.

kind of crazy, and I know Gamestop isnt what they used to be, but inevitably the Gamestop store experiences will go the way of Toys R Us, Kmart, Sears, Blockbuster etc.

I think they will ultimately shutter all stores and become an online only shop for a while (before the inevitable digital death). But man, I will miss the experiences of walking into a store like back in the 90s / 00s and just shopping around for games. When they die, that entire experience will go away with no replacement, similar to how the toys r us experience has gone away. sad.

I remember the first time I went to a Gamestop (it was called EB Games at the time). I only went because my friend told me it was the best place to buy Pokemon cards so I asked my parents to take me. When I walked in there my mind was blown at all the games I saw. There was just something magical about walking into a Toys R Us, Blockbuster or Gamestop as a kid. Glad I got to experience it.

No surprise at the Main and McFadden store closing. I imagine the one in the MainPlace mall will be closing in the near future as well. It's one of the last two mall-based Gamestops left in Orange County and kinda surprised it hasn't already closed.

You see, you're unfortunately in the minority being level headed and not some deranged dipshit that's been spoon fed all the dumb shit on twitter and everywhere else. People like us can just enjoy a game as I don't know, a normal form of entertainment like movies or books.

thats weird the store closed over 2 months ago
Google says it's now a "GAMEWARE — Video Game Sales & Repair"

Oh dang, didn't notice that before- gmail popped up a maps icon that said "Gamestop" and searching for the address still shows Gamestop, but eBay shipping address does say Gameware. Looks like their website has a OOS CIB listing for $25, I wonder if it'll show up there once delivered.

I'm so invested in this suddenly... LOL Will update everyone Monday, when it's scheduled to be delivered.(y)

I figured the store in Rio Rancho would be the next to close. That leaves five stores in ABQ with 2 of them being in malls (Coronado and Cottonwood).

there is nearly no positive news on the switch 2 at this point. High price point. $90 games. No physical games. A $10 demo.

You see, you're unfortunately in the minority being level headed and not some deranged dipshit that's been spoon fed all the dumb shit on twitter and everywhere else. People like us can just enjoy a game as I don't know, a normal form of entertainment like movies or books.

‘no idea what you’re talking about here… I was discussing how the switch 2 launch details are a huge flop in the industry. Never discussed other games. As a note, I own AC shadows and DA3.

This is some misinformation. There's no $90 games. Mario Kart World is $80 for both physical and digital. And Nintendo confirmed that first party games will be included on the cartridge - DLC and all.

Pricing is still too high for the games, but let's stick to the facts.

Personal taste (anecdotal evidence) may not align with trends.

While the social media sphere is obviously disconnected from the greater purchasing reality (though didn't Veilguard not do so hot?), you also have to filter out the chaff from the wheat.

The commentary on the Switch 2 being a flop has some noise that's just the console wars bullcrap, but others, such as pricing issues due to market uncertainties related to tariffs occurring during a very likely great recession looming will have a big impact on both product costs and perceived value vs. disposable income availability in the near future. Nintendo is raising the prices on everything and further nickle and diming customers by peeling off things typically expected as free upgrades for additional cost. They have also announced things that folks don't like, such as not using hall effect sensors in the joycons, which have a notorious failure rate related to drift.

Obviously, weigh the purchase on your own merits, but I'm pessimistic on the Switch 2 due to a multitude of issues, both external and internal to the device's launch, versus some other irrationality like it's not a Sony product or there's no Mario at launch (though, launch library is always a player in early market buy in, see Wii Sports or Mario 64).

And a better retort to my pessimism is that games typically prove resilient during market downturns as folks look towards entertainment to cope with circumstances. And my push-back would be that saturation of digital entertainment devices is a much different landscape in this environment and folks won't plonk down on a new device that's just "the Switch, but better" versus a new gimmick like the Wii launch or the OG Switch launch.

Agreed. Nintendo should go back to handheld and console. Having a $450 machine aimed at all ages may segment the younger demographic. Yet who am I to say… when I was a kid a parent would be considered insane to buy a $500 item for a ten year old. And here we are in 2025 with ‘iPad kids’ and ten year olds who have $1200 iPhones. Shit I know a family who literally bought their ten year old a $1600 MacBook Pro and has her own iPhone too.

I digress. A new console that has an lcd screen is a joke. That alone will have me boycott it. It’s insulting to have an OLED switch now and then not have the switch 2 with the same tech. All of my devices are OLED. Living room tv, pc monitor, and mobile devices. LCD is 2010 tech.

Any rumors of a switch trade-in deal towards Switch 2? Or console bonus? Leaning towards trading or selling my Switch and PS5.

There was one where you can trade in any Switch model and get a boost if you trade it in towards the Switch 2 by 4/30. But due to the preorders being delayed, that's currently in limbo.

I imagine they'll extend that deadline once preorders finally open up

This is some misinformation. There's no $90 games. Mario Kart World is $80 for both physical and digital. And Nintendo confirmed that first party games will be included on the cartridge - DLC and all.

Pricing is still too high for the games, but let's stick to the facts.
Fact of the matter is: Nintendo is overcharging and price-gouging. You casually fail to take into consideration tax which is up to 10% in the USA and not to mention VAT in Europe amongst other "variable pricing" in other parts of the world, so $90+ is not farfetched. Various gaming news outlets have confirmed BY NINTENDO that TLoZBotW will NOT include DLC for NSW2, so when you tell others "let's stick to the facts" you should also seriously do the same.

Agreed, LCD on the NSW2 is a deal breaker after coming from the NSW OLED...it would've been a far better marketing strategy/value proposition to offer consumers options by setting the price of an LCD NSW2 at $399.99 and an OLED NSW2 at $449.99 like how Microsoft did for the XSX and XSS or Sony for the PS5 physical and digital consoles. Make the tutorial game and chat features on the house, and the Dr. Mario pills would've been easier to swallow.

Where are you getting your 'facts' from? For one, no one ever includes tax when talking about a sticker price. You wouldn't say the PS5 launched at $550 because of tax. You call it a $500 console. Same applies to a game. Nintendo is charging $80 (which I agree is high), but you guys are exaggerating the price to make it sound even worse than it is.

As for games being on cartridge

I feel like a lot of people are just repeating what their favorite rage bait youtubers say and not looking at the factual information out there. Don't get upset at me because the actual situation isn't as bad as you want it to be.

Not Reddit, I guarantee.

No one but you? May I remind you that you're on this site known as Cheapassgamer, at least half of its members take tax into consideration for all their gaming purchases especially the major bigs ones like the PS5 Pro recently.
Don't get upset at me because the actual situation isn't as bad as you want it to be.
And first of all, this isn't about you or me. This is all about Nintendo and their shady practices. We would be GLEEFULLY JOYFUL to HIGH HEAVENS...IF they priced their next-generation console and games much more reasonably.

As for games being on cartridge
This was not the original contention.
And Nintendo confirmed that first party games will be included on the cartridge - DLC and all.
"DLC and all" is what you claimed. Once again, TLoZBotW, a first party Nintendo game, will NOT include DLC on NSW2, physical or digital, according to: Gamespot, Eurogamer, IGN, Game Rant, Game Informer, Forbes, and even Nintendo Life. Will third party NSW2 games? We don't know, yet.

Unpopular opinion but there’s no such thing as price gouging unless it involves essential items when there is a shortage. Like toilet paper during covid.

No one needs a switch 2 or BOTW. If you don’t like it and think it’s overpriced, just don’t buy it. Am I happy with $80-$90 games? No of course not. But A company should be able to charge whatever they think their product is worth, and it’s up to the consumers to choose if they want to buy it

I'm probably going to get the Switch 2 Bundle if it stays at $499. But yeah the pricing this era is diabolical. Charging $10 for a instructional "game" that should've been packed in like astrobot is diabolical. $80 for Mario Kart diabolical. I'm guessing it might turn out to be a flop because of pricing, its giving 3ds release era with "tariff tax" added. I'm sure after the 1st year or two when the hype dies they'll have to come down price. It won't be like the 3ds release where prices came down months in because after covid everyone is mass buying/scalping, look at pokemon cards.

Fair, but minus the essentials aspect best way in describing their business practice to my limited knowledge of English and economics. How else to describe raising prices for the bullshitiest reasons, essentials or not?

Also fair. We should be able to criticize products despite the "facts" and "misinformation" presented. The end goal is to pressure [greedy] corporations to set prices where customers can agree on based upon the "worth" of said products. No physical? No manufacturing costs? Great! The M in MSRP is no more, but SRP should SUGGESTIVELY be SIGNFICANTLY below what manufacturing used to add into the overal cost. What I dislike about the gaming community, any community really, are those praising/shilling like religious fanatics against the best interests of the general public, in this case the "average gamer". We are being told by the minority that it is absolutely and perfectly okay for us to fork over $80+ for NSW2 games...worst when they're digital-only and/or DLC excluded. I SINCERELY hope third-party PC key sites do not readjust their pricing structure just because Nintendo, let alone Sony and Microsoft, does it...

With the notorious track records of SwSh and ScVi, $80 for Pokemon Legends ZA is a hesitating pass at least until a major price drop hits which will almost never happen if digital-only and also because this is Nintendo we're talking about. I'll admit tho, Arceus was/is a good game, but just because ZA has the title Legends in it doesn't necessarily mean the game will also be good or better possibly worse because this is also Game Freak we're talking about. After Cyberpunk 2077, Aliens Colonial Marines, and other half-baked games...gamers will take a "wait and see" approach more apprehensively next-generation.
