In light of all of the blockbuster credit everyone has been accumulating, and the way some of us go to a lot of pawn shops and such... I thought we should start a list of rare dvd's, rare as being defined as a single movie that goes for $30 or more market value...
(not box sets unless they have a unusally high value)

here's one that goes for over $100

This is a collection of all of the contributions from everyone that has posted in this thread...If any of these dvds doesn't belong on this list just post about it and I will remove it....

The original Scarface DVD used to go for quite a bit. I haven't seen how well it's maintained that price since the new DVD release last year.
where would u find out this information?
amazon (used), half.com (used), ebay (new or used), there are lots of sites that sell rare & OOP/OOS dvds, the Bible, and personal knowledge.
If I remember right, Mallrats will fetch a decent price since its OOP.
I think that one, along with the original Clerks DVD, got a reprint. I recall them being around $30 each about 3 years ago. Then, out of nowhere, they were both turning up everywhere for around $15.

are you serious, I just traded that in at bb for $8 the other day...-

The version of The Killer that sells for big $ is the Criterion version...

and speaking of Chow Yun Fat, Hard Boiled Criterion also goes for big $$.
If I'm not mistaken, the very first pressing of The Devil's Advocate has a scene in it that was deleted after a lawsuit- making it sought after. I however don't know how to differentiate this one. Another DVD that seems to go for pretty decent money is The Anniversary Edition of King Kong Vs. Godzilla. Amusingly enough, stores couldn't blow these out at $5 back when it was still in print.

"mystery science theater 3000: the movie" on dvd used to go for a lot of money on ebay, somtimes well over $100. i just checked completed items on ebay though, and it seems that lately it's only gone for between 20 and 30. used on amazon it's still at $100 or higher, which is making me think that i should just sell mine on amazon for $90, then buy another copy off of ebay for $30. but i probably won't, i'm lazy.

You are assuming that people are actually buying it used from amazon at those prices, but it seems unlikely. Probably they have been listed there forever and a day, and nobody is biting. People can ask $5,000 for that rare copy of Haven (PS2), but nobody is going to buy it.

Its a wierd market because so many titles reappear shortly after becoming valuable...(John Carpenter's They Live and Prince of Darkness etc...)
Some good ones to look out for that are sub par releases but draw a buck or two
Rawhead Rex Pioneer Artisan rare and worth 50 or more
Dr. Giggles Good times -usually about 5 bucks sells for 30 or more
Maniac Cop Anchor Bay release same as Rawhead
Flash Gordon as mentioned
Aeon Flux MTV DVD (I sold this for alot)
several Criterion Collection DVDs
John Woo films (Hard Boiled, The Killer, Bullet in the Head)
Sid and Nancy
Spinal Tap
Dead Ringers
these are just a few but there are many obscure titles that are worth keeping an eye out for.
what scene was deleted from the Devil's Advocate??
I have the original release and would like to know just for giggles!!
The story I remember was that the man that painted the picture that hangs behind Al Pacino towards the end of the film was offended over the fact that his work of art "came to life" in a somewhat semi-pornographic nature - and he sued the studio over it. The film had already been released on DVD at this point, but that particular scene was quietly and subtly re-edited to be less "shocking" and re-introduced into the market.

Here is the info on the Devil's Advocate DVD. I have to check to see which one I own. I thought it was the first pressing, but I don't think I have actually watched the DVD yet ;)

"
The first pressing of DA has a catalog number of 15090 while the reissue is 16172. The number is on the spine of the DVD case and on the disc itself. "

this is definitely true, but if i were to list it for, say $90, which is $10 cheaper than the cheapest they have used on amazon. sooner or later, someone's going to look at that and think "YEAH! a deal!" and jump all over it, because people are weird. i wish there was a way on amazon to see completed transactions, like on ebay. i doubt i'll bother with it, though.

another rare, out of print criterion dvd is "flesh for frankenstein", which is listed at $60 or so on amazon, but i'm pretty sure it's gone for over $100 recently on ebay. then there's always the "this is spinal tap" criterion.

I've sold some OOP discs for some good prices over the years....and some I've kicked myself for selling

Good ones:
Jack Frost $50 (this is the killer snowman movie...now it can be had for $5!!!)
Scarface $69 (now you can get the GOOD version a LOT cheaper)

Bad Ones:
Little Mermaid (sold it for cost a while back)
Snow White (sold it for cost also....)

What about Criterions of the following:
Brazil (3-Disc)
Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing
Rushmore
all great flicks by the way

All are still in print and can be found at most stores.

i believe that the akira limited edition tin is worth 30-40, as they did not make a ton of them and its oop (plus its a really high quality release)

the TOOL salival dvd set is incredibly expensive, which just pisses me off because i almost bought it for 22 bucks at media play when it was released, but did not have the money and didnt go back for it. ill kick myself forever for not picking it up if the price never goes down

Downside to most of the Criterion releases is that generally only collectors buy them in the first place, and are almost never found in the wild.

swamp thing uncut with the nude sceen is the one i have been after for awhile now. Just dont wanna pay those ungodly ebay prices for it.
Swamp Thing and Flash Gordon (1980)
really, I hadn't known about those. One local store near me has a ton of them for $5-8. Well I know where I'm off too. IS there anyway to differentiate the Flash Gordons because there are a few different ones. Any I.D. number anyone knows about.

Also, a lot of the Anchor Bay NUMBERED LE are OOP

Evil Dead TIN
Hellraiser 1/2 TIN (I have...yeah!)
SuperGirl LE
Candy LE
House 1/2 (I have...not so rare)
Maniac TIN
Wicker Man WOODEN BOX edition
Halloween 4 and/or 5 TIN (not so rare yet)
REPO MAN TIN
Heathers TIN

There are a few more

This is interesting.

I am sitting here thinking why the heck would it matter. But then I rememberd my PC game collection and how people think I am nuts now...

Oh the fun of it all.
The original Scarface DVD used to go for quite a bit. I haven't seen how well it's maintained that price since the new DVD release last year.
ya, the same with the first pressing of willy wonka, criterion edition of silence of the lambs, and hellraiser 1 and 2 tin case.

funny you mention that. i just sold mine on ebay, because i've only watched once in the years that i've had it. i bought it for something like $15 used, and my auction ended tonight, at $70. although i've seen some go for even more than that, i'm pretty happy about it.

Oh ya halloween 1 with the hologram type cover limited edition. I have that one. and 2 copies of the halloween 5 dvd tin 1 still sealed.
Ed Wood is rare and goes for around 40-50. I guess it was recalled before it officially went on sale or something.
probably not for long. it's scheduled to come out (again) on 10/19. i'm not sure if there will still be a market for the original release, because if i remember correctly, someone told me the reason the first release was recalled was that they had to cut out some of the commentary, but i have no idea if that's an accurate statement or not.

I thought it had to do with not getting the right oks on some of the music in the movie. As for the new edition, Im wondering if they will have things cut out or if they finally got the correct permissions. If things are cut out, the original will probably stay high in value.

Regardless, I didnt know it was coming out on the 19th, so now I have something else to use my FYE credit on (along with arrested development)

Most criterion dvd's that go oop, esp Salo (beware counterfeits)
Spinal Tap (even though there was a MGM rerelease... this)

Robocop Criterion Collection - About $40 used.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1559408898
I bought mine new for $20 two years ago at a record store that was going out of business. Best find ever.
Found one at a pwan shop this year... paid 6 for it... sold it for 30 since I already had it for about 4 or 5 years

I have a habbit of getting DVDs and then finding out later from friends that they can't find the same versions anymore. Happened w/ my 2-disk Army of Darkness Director's Cut. No idea what it's worth (if anything now), because I'd never get rid of it anyway.

A few others I have that have either been confirmed to be rare in this thread or that I suspect to be:

Robocop Critirion
Fear & Loathing Critirion
Akira Collector's Ed (in tin)
Almost Famous Untitled - The Bootleg Cut
Drunken Master 2 (chineese ver.)
E.T.
Escaflowne: The Movie (ultimate ed, boxed)
Fight Club Special Ed. (tho I've seen this one pop back up recently I believe)
Dune (sci-fi channel mini-series)
Lock, Stock, & 2 Smoking Barrels (?)
Saving Private Ryan (DTS ver.)
Sleeping Beauty
Total Recall (in tin)
Tron 20th Anniversary Collector's Ed.

Oh yeah....don't forget

American Psycho (UNRATED EDITION)

Big Trouble in Little China (2-Disc set....still around a bit though) FOX went through a thing with their 2-disc sets and re-released them all as one disc (Fight Club is another...but the 2-disc is still around)
