Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: More POG games (disc-only used games sold for $9.99) sighted at stores week of Nov 9th
Many CAGs have reported finding new shipments of POG games (prepacked previously owned games) showing up on Nov 10th-12th. This is YMMV as many stores will not get them. But if they do, they are usually in clear cases, disc-only, and are priced at $9.99. Some notables include Call of Duty World at War, CoD Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Halo Wars, etc. It appears to be all 360 games this time. These are disc-only refurbs but are usually in excellent shape. Note that these all have the same barcode that rings up $9.99 - if you find the same games with regular cover art and specific bar codes for that used game, then they are not part of this POG stock and will be regular prices (generally way over $9.99 for the newer titles).

ALERT: B1G1 NOW OVER (but possibly returning in late November)
The latest Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale on games $14.99 has ended. The following list of $14.99 and under used games will be maintained for the next sale though. It seems highly likely from various reports that a B1G1 sale will be returning some time in late November. Some are even a decent buy without the B1G1 sale:

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

Fyi, that is policy.
So what are Blockbuster store closings like? Do they do clearance sales where the % off drops each consecutive week?
A store closed near me due to a lease issue. It was pretty much like when Circuit City and CompUSA closed -- the signage was even the same.

However the deals were lacking.

Video Games never dropped lower than 15% -- and everything was shipped off before the end of the sale.

Blu Rays never dropped lower than $14

New DVDs were marked no lower than 20%

Rentals went like this:
$12 per dvd
dropped to $10
dropped to $7

Best deals were on TV DVD Series -- they dropped down around $20 / series by the end.

The signs advertised up to 70% off -- but the only thing that made 70% off was the artwork.

I was there on the last day of the sale, during the last hour. The store was still stuffed with merchandise. I was expecting a firesale like what happened at CompUSA for the last hour -- but it never happened. I was told they were just instructed to ship the stuff off.

It's a bad policy and it's bad business.

What other retailer do you know of that doesn't offer returns? And if they don't, then they have huge signs which say ALL SALES FINAL.

I understand that you were told otherwise, so this doesn't apply to you, but isn't the consumer responsible for making informed purchases? Return policies are usually complicated and not something easily communicated. Plus all sales are not final, because if your games were broken you could still return them.

All I said was "that's policy", which it is.

Their business is to rent videos and games. They're use to people trying to buy items and returning it later, trying to "rent" the game for free. I've had no trouble returning items before when they were defective so they wont deny you totally if you do bring in a defective item.

Not surprised. Everyone knows they had way too many B&M for their own good. The same thing happened at a BBV near me (no great deals at the end).

When Netflix came along, most stockholders knew they were done. Then, when they finally decided to go online, Netflix had already cornered the market (similar to when companies started making MP3 players. The Ipod was already the standard).

A friend of mine attended a shareholder's meeting in which someone asked if they would ever consider stocking "adult movies" in the stores or online to combat the increasing lost in sales. They were told "absolutely not". He said ALOT of people did not like that answer. He got back and a week later sold all his stock.

Well, I believe mp3 players existed years before the ipod came out. They were bulky, and unattractive. I remember my physics professor whipping his out and telling us this was what was on the market before ipods existed. However, what Apple did was make them stylish, which began this trend of players.

I agree though that BBV had too many B&M stores. I remember there use to be 4 BBV on the same street over the stretch of a mile in the city next to mine before they finally closed two of them. However, the more BBV meant more games and deals for people who are searching for them ;)

I can attest to the mp3 history. I had the original Diamond Rio PMP300 MP3 player back in 1998. It was the first mp3 player on the market, long before the first ipod. It ran off of AA and had an astounding 32MB of flash memory.

I saw pretty much the same thing at 2 stores that closed near me. While they had big "up to 50% off banners" the games were 20% at one and 15% at the other. The 20% store was well-stocked and had plenty of great B1G1 games (this was during the last sale in June/July). However, they told me the B1G1 promo was not running in their system and it would just be 20% off, which made them a worse deal than at regular, non-closing stores

The second store was at 15% during this last B1G1 sale and they had 3 games in their bin. I'm assuming they shipped off the rest before they even started the sale. Lame, though perhaps that's why I found an interesting selection at the BBV that was closest to them. That was the only one in my area that had Pikmin and they had a wide selection of DS games I never saw anywhere else.

While I agree it kind of sucks, I believe Gamecrazy has the same policy with respect to used games. GS is the only place I know of that lets you return used stuff without it being defective. But regardless of the policy, you can run up against jackasses at any store: recently I had to return a defective NEW game at Target and they told me they couldn't because of Federal Law. I was, like, WTF!? GS does it no problem - the Target CS rep told me they must be exempt from the Federal Law or something . I just went to another Target and did it no problem (it was an opened game that didn't work and because it was clearance they didn't have any more to replace it with).

Check it out, weight, price, picture, etc!

rio06.jpg

My apologies to owners, but now just like back then I cannot understand why people thought this was so great. I was much happier with my discman.

MSRP: $199

"The actual weight of the Rio is only 2.4 ounces, and the dimensions are only 3" by 2" and just a bit over half an inch thick!" (note this is his '98 review where he is not being sarcastic lol).

If you want to upgrade to the full version of the software you are going to have to bring out the credit card for a full $29.95 purchase.

It took exactly 3 minutes and 29 seconds to move 6 songs that weighed in at 31MB to the unit.

I have 6 songs that were recorded at 160kbs in the unit now and there is no room for more. This gives just under 25 minutes of music for my ears to listen to. Using lower quality 128kbs MP3 rips you should be able to fit about 7 songs in the unit and only 30 minutes of playing time. When Diamond talks about 60 minutes of music they are talking about 64kbs recorded samples that have a very noticeable difference in quality from CD-Quality. The Rio does offer you the option to spend $100 more and get another 32MB flash card that will double your storage.

On the MP3 topic, I bought an iRiver 128MB MP3 player back in 2002, for about $129. It holds about two hours worth of music at 128-160kps, so good enough for a workout. And, probably unlike a lot of 7-year-old iPods, this one STILL WORKS.

And what's your point, J7? That old stuff sucks and was overpriced? My first computer had 4K of RAM . And I remember when they came out with this wacky peripheral called a floppy disc drive that was like $600 (in early 80's money no less) but allowed you nearly instant access to your data as opposed to having to rewind and load up tapes.

My point is that for the price it wasn't worth it even for its time. 6-7 songs with the 32 mb for $200 then $25 to be able to rip full cds, so $225, when you could get a cd player for so much cheaper and have at least a full album or what like 600-700 mb without carrying any other discs. With computers its not like there was a cheaper alternative that provided more memory just at a small expense of being larger.

Ah, good point, I suppose the advantage of the mp3 player at the time would have been portability (for workouts, travel, etc) vs carrying a CD player. But it's nothing I would have ever bought. I still don't have an mp3 player (besides my iPhone but I never use it for mp3s) to this day (though my kids now have iPods and use them all the time).

Last comment on the used game return policy. When then stated that this was policy I actually asked to see it. The back of the receipt had nothing. And there was nothing publicly displayed stating this policy. They also couldn't produce anything, only a policy about defective merchandise.

Either way the policy is flawed. I could have easily gotten the refund by taking a key to the disks and destroying them. But these were decent B1G1 titles that some kid would enjoy, and I really didn't want to destroy a couple of games to get my $10 back.
Ah, good point, I suppose the advantage of the mp3 player at the time would have been portability (for workouts, travel, etc) vs carrying a CD player. But it's nothing I would have ever bought. You're right I would think because people I knew who had them used them all the time when they worked out for 30-60 minutes most likely.

If they had more copies of the game, you just would have gotten those instead. The mentality is, if you want to TRY something out ("I didn't like this, not what I thought, etc) you can rent. Doesn't quite hold true for things we sell but don't rent anymore, but that's the idea. Which is also the answer I give to people renting something they "didn't like": "Tough cookies", but in a nice way.

If you came to me like 1 hour after you had bought them, we'd refund. If it was like 4 days after the fact, you're sol.
On the MP3 topic, I bought an iRiver 128MB MP3 player back in 2002, for about $129. It holds about two hours worth of music at 128-160kps, so good enough for a workout. And, probably unlike a lot of 7-year-old iPods, this one STILL WORKS.
Ha, I had an iRiver as well. 256MB though. It was shaped like a thick tube of complimentary airplane toothpaste, and I was the envy of my friends back in high school.

Good times.

On the Buy 1 Get 1 free $14.99 and under, did that mean the first game could be more than $14.99? I've had my eye on Animal Crossing Wii for a while, at $19.99. During the next sale, could I potentially get that and another game, which is $14.99 or less, free?

Here are some random price drops i remember seeing. Hopefully there will be another B1G1 around Christmas again if the stores don't shut down.

Wii
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles - 14.99
Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party - 14.99
Wii Music - 14.99

Like all of the madden 09's dropped down to 14.99 too I think. There were a couple more interesting drops to that price, I'll try to remember and jot some down at work tonight just for information's sake since the sale has already ended anyway.
bully scholarship edition for 360...9.99.... would it be worth getting ?
Yes.

I got it during a B1G1 sale at $14.99 and it's worth it, even in the embarassingly short time I've spent with it.

I guess that 50% off strategy guides sale is over, as I found the Fallout 3 CE guide but it rang up full price. (Sorry if this was covered already!)

Also saw the Halo ODST strategy guide for sale.

3 different BBV all had 50% off ALL NEW :360:/:ps3:/:wii:/:ps2:/:ds: games (reg + CE) & strat guides. Seems like their prices were all MSRP $59.99+.

Are we talking about anything like new copies of XMO:Wolverine for $30 here or, you know, other games...

I remember SFIV,Guitar Hero:Aerosmith, 50Cent:BITS, GTAIV(Reg price was $29.99, so ~$15 after discount),LIPS w/ 2 mics, MK vs DC, WWE 09 CE, Resisitance 2 CE, BlazBlue, RE5, Terminator Salvation, COD4, Iron man, etc.....
Are there even new games at BBV these days?
Mine has new games, but they're all gutted. I noticed (at least at the BBV I went to), that when I buy a used game, it's behind the counter, but when it's new, they go to the back and get it.

A lot of new games are still at "sale" prices from early this year. I see it all the time going through the computer looking for stuff and you see the new price is 9.99 and used is 19.99.

I can't attest to this week, SINCE I GET 10 HOURS A WEEK NOW, but I haven't seen new games other than presales in half a year.

Transformers: RotF?

So I thought ALL Blockbusters essentially clearanced, then got rid of, all their new games earlier this year? I haven't seen any of those games progman listed at any BBs. Did see a shelf full of books though :)

Nothing at the one I stopped at tonight, but the manager did say that the store is closing and will be starting clearance on the 12th. That's the two nearest to me that have or will be closing. :(

The 50% off new games promo was going on here in Hawaii when the B1G1 was going on . The store I went to had UFC, Prototype, Fight Night R4(which I picked up), Fuel and some other games. The MSRP for all the 360 and PS3 games were $59.99. got FNR4 for about $32 and change.

there is only 1 store closing in our district and its being turned into a outlet store so be on the lookout as there will be a few of these bbvs testing this out. they will be selling all kinds of electronics along with movies and games. i dont expect any great deals but will report back when things change over. the last day it will be open as a regular store will be oct 25.

Odd, all the BBGRs around here have new games (the few they actually have) in those hard plastic cases on the floor with all their other games. Half off is a great sale for good new games, and not those left-over, no-one-wants new games. Which, last I noticed is what all my BBGRs have.

Still, could be worth a look sometime this week.

Went to my local GR today and found nothing about a game sale... absolutely nothing.

Did get quoted 25$ for Marvel: UA 2 (360), though.

So anyone know if all the closing BBVs are closing at a specific date or will the closings be spread out over a period of time?
Thanks.
