The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Gen. Discussion & Info

So i'm doing a little sidequest where i'm basically trapped and have to go in a cave and beat three hunters. The third hunter has the key. I beat him (after like half an hour of trying). I make my way to the outside.

All I can see is my hand and sword. There's no HUD. I can look around, I can spin around, I can crouch, and I can go in 3rd person, but none of the other buttons work. I am not over-encumbered. It's really frustrating. I cannot continue with the game due to this bug and i've put ten or eleven hours into it, so starting over is out of the question. Is it something i'm carrying that's causing this? I tried resetting the 360 and doing that cached trick for the HD or whatever, and still no dice. Whenever I walk through that door to the outside, i'm frozen and can't move.

I just got pissed and shut the 360 off. I really, really don't want to start over from the beginning.

Wow, that sucks. I wish I knew how to help you. My 360 froze once when I was trying to save, and I lost like 15 minutes. Nothing compared to the trouble you're having...

LOL You put in 10 hours and your still level 2? You might wanna start over since if you havent leveled to atleast 7-8 by 10 hours then your doing something wrong.
How important is sleep in this game? Should I get a certain number of hours of sleep after a while?
No. You only need to sleep when you hit a level basically or you want all your HP MP and shit healed. Make sure when you level you sleep in a bed and not use the wait function.
Make sure when you level you sleep in a bed and not use the wait function.
How come?
How come?
I dunno. If you use the wait function its not like sleeping. Sleeping in a bed however is like sleeping. :) That way once it says at the top of your screen when you level " Meditate and Rest or Blah Blah Blah" That mean find a bed and rest so you'll become Level X.

Well that was surprising. First the fact that I went out and bought the CE to a genre that I normally play. So I pop it in and I'm actually enjoying it. It doesn't feel at all like an RPG. Hated the dungeon crawling in the first part, so it's nice to be out in the world now.

Started off w/ the Nord character type, but switched to the Woods Elf with a custom class suited to stealth play. Can't be a pack rat collecting everything to sell though. Hopefully I can raise how much I can carry later on.

The bigger problem: My character has red hands.

It looked fine in the dungeon and sewer while I was creating him, but once he's in the sunlight, he looks red.

Meh, if you become a Assasian you get a full cloak gear anyways so no one will be able to see most of you.

My dude's lookin' like that Thief character already all covered up. Hopefully I stumble upon some bad ass lookin' hoodie. Need some new pants, too.

BTW, for those that did that went into that first ruin you see right outside the sewers, what's the little power up you get when you activate the well from outside? I got that little icon in the corner w/ the counter, but I had no idea what it did. And unless I missed it, there wasn't really anything good in there. Guess it's just an area to help in leveling up early and learning more of the basic gameplay.

It was probably a health and/or mana regeneration shrine. I've found a number of them around: they make you regenerate health and/or mana very quickly for 10 seconds or so.

Just wanted to pop in here and praise the organization of the CAG 360 board! Every other forum I usually go to has become the unofficial Oblivion board with whole pages of nothing but Oblivion topics.

Back on topic, I just picked up the game and will go through this thread later when I need some tips.

Are you talking about the ruin directly across the water once you exit the sewers? The one where two bandits have a camp outside it? If so, there are quite a few decent things in there... Armor, weapons, and I got about 20 of some mana crystals that are worth 50 a piece, plus there is a stone that is worth 1k in there.

Last night I closed that Oblivion gate in Kvatch and did some side quests. Good little side quest in Bruma where this couple is having trouble with stealing stuff. Its called Two Sides of the Coin. You have to ask around in rumors I think. Anyone know how to find that Vampire Hunter?

BTW - I got an invite to the Thieves Guild, but I didn't go at midnight or whatever. Can I go anyday at midnight or was it just that time? Do I have to steal another thing?

Hey do you remember who gave you the Thief's Guild Invite? What they look like? Please help I wanna join it.

Also what do you guys think. I have a chance to become a Vampire. This dude from my guild asked me. Good Idea or No?

Semi spoiler about that quest...

That wasn't the thieves guild, was some stupid quest about him having trouble with someone spying on him. When I found out what he wanted, I went back the same time the next night and murdered him. Great way to get into the dark brotherhood.

God I love this game... Yestarday I spent 10 hours just in the arena alone. Breezed through most of the ranks till I got to warrior. I beat the team of three, now I can't beat the single npc after it...

I've played for a total of 7 hours, and I haven't even finished the first quest out of the sewers. There is so much to do its unbelievable. I've done a quest at the Imperial City and fought in the Arena. This is definitely not a hack and slack game which I am so glad. I just love sneaking up on people and getting that initial extra damage when fighting.

This AI is something else. I was walking around in the countryside and saw a deer. I decided to kill it. I believe I was upwind from it, and the way the deer was reacting it seemed it was smelling/sensing me. I would get closer and it would hear me even in sneak mode and would run off. I finally killed with a lucky shot with the bow. I hit it towards the back leg, so it did not died right away. It ran off alittle bit and finally killed over.

This game is the reason why I bought my 360.......

mine came from a dark elf.

they just walked right up to me.

I'm in the first gate of oblivion. I seemed to hve cleared everything out, yet when I go to the gate thing inside it says something like the door is opened, or another door is opened? I forgot what it exactly said. Does anyone know what to do?? I'm just wandering around, and my sword is two handed so I can't hold a torch to see.

What city was it? I'm also guessing you'll have to be seen stealing something just like the Assasian one.

It told me to meet in some garden at the imperial city though..

Pimpinc - you have to steal any one thing and get thrown in jail for it, once you get out a random guy will hand you a note. you might have to sleep for like 2 or 3 hours outside though..

Once you equip a torch then put away your sword (with X Button) then the torch wil come out.

You have to go to the top of the tower and destroy the stone that holds the gate open. You might want to go back to town and get a torch too because it is dark in some areas on the way to destroying the stone.

For the thiefs guild go meet him in the waterfront area at Midnight, he's only there around that time. It's near the huts by the pirate ship.

P.S. Scorch I know this doesn't help, but because of how wide open this game is and how much you can do I always have multiple saves to back me up from something like that. Right now I currently have 4 saves, just in case.

Or, you know, exploring. Some of us like to look around and stir up shit before playing the actual game. I prefer to take my time with games, not rushrushrushrushrush and be the first one to say "OMG I BEET DAT GAEM!". For example, I found a church with necrophiliacs. I wasn't expecting that. There's a lot to explore and I plan on exploring before doing the actual game.

Besides that, i'm not training my guy to be a huge warrior. He's a thief. I ninjaloot then I run like a bitch. I can break in a house, steal everything, then get out before anyone wakes up. I pickpocketed a guy while he was having a conversation and he never suspected a thing.

Yeah, I do. I have one just outside the main gate. I'll just load up a previous save or something. First, i'm going to try stealing the final key instead of beating the final guard.. if it still fucks up, i'll load a previous save.

Yea I know what you mean. I right now a level 13 THF/Assasian. I haven't touched the main game yet im just exploring like you and fighting any enemies I see.

So does anyone have any tips on lockpicking things that are higher than your skill level? Right now, I'm trying to escape from the prison without doing my time, but my security skill of 36 is way too low to simpy auto-attempt the hard lock on the cell.
I've tried listening for a certain sound or visually trying to guess, but it seems like I just can't get it. Perhaps I should just do the time...

There's another way to join the Thieves Guild:

In Imperial City, read one of the wanted posters for that Fox dude (I forget his name). After you read it, you'll be able to ask people about him. Ask a beggar about him -- the beggar will tell you where you can get a hold of him if they like you 70 points or higher. Just charm them, or whatever; or give them a bribe (since they're beggars).

The beggar will then tell you where you can meet a guild representative (at midnight).

I did it this way, because I'm avoiding jail time.

I can only manually pick locks up to the moderate level (or do they use the word "medium"). Even so, I can rarely do it.

It's hard as shit, that's for sure. I've found that as soon as the tumbler goes up, hitting A just as the pick rests in the keyhole seems to work... then again, it's still hard as shit.

I actually went to jail once (but restarted my last savepoint prior to, and you'll see why...), and broke out of my cell by trying to pick the lock. I failed, but a guard saw me and opened my cell. I thought, "What a dipshit!" Ran by him and ran into - I shit you not - 10 guards who all hit me at once, killing me instantly.

I didn't have to go to jail either to join the guild. Some random NPC I talked to told me about where to meet the guy. I just met him as well.

where do you buy lockpicks? After about the 5th store in imperial city I shouted "where the muthafuckin lockpicks at!?!?, and side cocked my bow at the shopkeeper. It didn't end well.

Awesome, I only went to jail so that I could join the thieves guild. Now I'll just load my previous save game and forget about it. Thanks.

EDIT: Actually, I just managed to pick that hard lock. All I did was test the numerous tumblers to see if I could find a pattern in how quickly they fell back down. Each one fell slowly every other time that I checked it. So I just tried to put it in place when I knew the tumbler would be falling slowly, and it was easy. Maybe it was just a fluke, but I was still pretty proud of myself.... but, I'm not going to save over that save game from before the prison because I still have all of those guards to get past.

I have a question

Well I was doing quests and I ran into another Oblivion gate so I ran in and shut it down. Are these just part of the main story (meaning you have to do them or are they optional?) I know you're suppose to shut down the gates but is there a "MAIN QUEST" mission for these or do you just go find them? After I took the stone and closed it I didnt get a "mission complete" or anything, I just got that stone in my inventory. Thanks!

The only people I know that sell them is the Dark Brotherhood and Theif guild members. Of course you have to be a member too.
So does anyone know if its a good idea for me to become a Vampire?
If I remember correctly from glancing through the guide, you get a +5 bonus to certain attributes, but in order to maintain your state, you have to drink blood (obviously). If you don't, when you go out into the sun, you'll start to lose health slowly and get fatigued much quicker.

Speaking of picking locks, I am really starting to get the hang of it. I can pick any type of lock within 5-7 tries. So needless to say, I'm robbing every store blind, then selling all the merchandise to Ongar. Awesome. I just got enough to buy that crappy house on the Waterfront, so now I plan on just dropping off all my regular belongings at my house before I go on mass looting sprees.

Where is Ongar? I'd like to sell my stolen shit also, heh.

I have recently started looting copous amounts of goods as well.. its fun stuff.

Gotta find a thief guild or something so I can hopefully raise my lockpicking skills. Even the 3 bar ones give me problems. What's the way to join that guild?

He is in Borus, but you need to be a member of the Thieves Guild for him to buy your hot stuff.

I've been playing about 10 hours, and I am loving this game. I've gotten over the draw-distance pop-ins on the overworld.

I'm a thief. I recently broke out of jail (I'm lvl. 4) and started to leave, when I got captured.

BTW, anyone know what to kill the fish in the lake with for the man in Waye?

I know I'm not the only one who started out the game with the mindset that I was going to enjoy every aspect of it so I didn't plan on using the auto travel. That changed when I figured out how freakin long it took to get from town to town, even with a damn horse.

I think the thing that pisses me off the most is how easy it is to get arrested. I was at an Inn and I accidently hit the "A" button on an item and picked it up. Some bitch screamed and called me a thief. I was so tempted to slice the bitch in half but I didn't want to make things worse for myself. As soon as I get outside, sure enough, let's go to jail!

How are you guys getting into shops and stealing stuff without getting caught by the guards? No matter how far away from a guard I am, how stealthy I am, or how fast I do it, the guard always comes in the shop and catches me.

Same thing with me. Its been the only big problem with the game so far for me. It is damn annoying. :bomb:
