The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Gen. Discussion & Info
Thank you. He did answer answer my question on how to make magical items but I was also wondering about soul gems. I'm not sure if I have "Soul Tap" spell yet. Thanks for the info.
Some advice on this: I couldn’t find a "Beginner Soul Trap" spell, so I had to buy a weak "Detect Life" spell to get enough skill in that school of magic to cast "Lesser Soul Tap." I basically walked around casting the detect life spell for a couple of hours while I did quests. I don’t know if you will need to do the same thing, but I wanted to pass along my experience so you don’t encounter the same frustration.

That will work for me. I have been using a lot of spells on nothing as I walk just to get the exp up. Thanks again.

Hey guys, I just got Oblivion (never played any of the other Elder Scrolls titles) and I'm out of the sewers, but I got a quick question (forgive me if this is a repost of the same question).

I've done some reading online about the leveling system of this game , but I still don't understand the specifics. I know that the enemies level up according to what your character level is; but I was wondering how do you maximize your level bonuses each time you level? For instance when you level up, sometimes I see a +2 or +3 on certain stats. I know +5 is the max, but how do I go about doing that? I know it has something to do with your Minor Skills, but I do not know the specifics. I just want to make sure I don't get owned later on in the game.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Wow, that was the closest any of the "power-leveling" or whatever you call it has made any sense to me. I'll still have to read that through about 20 times and have a diagram for myself to get it, but I'll get there.

So basically pick 3 major skill sets you want the +5 to go twards and then find a corresponding minor skills that go towards and use those over and over to get the number of points towards leveling? I'm so confused. And it seems so simple.
Click back onto that quote and I have quoted KwanzaaTimmy's breakdown of the leveling system. His original post is on that same page a few posts up.

Check this out:

Major Nelson posted a funny thing on his blog for those people that take the role playing aspect of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion as literally as they can: an easy way to get your own ugly mug on your ingame character.http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/
Simply download the demo for Singular Inversions’ FaceGen software, feed it a picture of your face or anyone else you’d like to model, and after a whole bunch of analyzing the software will then try to recreate your face using heaps of different values for inner brow width and the like…. indeed exactly the same sliders you get during Oblivion’s character creation, so you can just copy the values and see how you would’ve looked if you were born a Khajiit in Kvatch.
Makes life a whole bunch easier for celebrity imitators as well ofcourse

Ctrl-Alt-Del talked about this back when the game came out and I tried it but its difficult to duplicate the program's results because the slider's are difficult to line up between the 2 and, while the program gives you numerical values, the 360 version doesn't let you input numbers.

Bummer. I was thinking it might be fun to have some celebrities.

You can give it a try but it'll probably just end up being pretty generic (I know mine did).

Nah, I like my Lion (Kahjiit) :D

On another note, are some items just useles, like weighing scales, crystal balls, pliers, pickaxes, shovels, forks, nives, mages clothing....etc.

I'm 40+ hours into the game and I still haven't found a use for them really.

So I finally got around to downloading the Wizard's Tower and of course the weather is crappy like everyone else is reporting. It better not be part of the programming code that its always bad weather up there, especially after they made a big deal about having a "spectacular view".
There is no use for them, except the paintbrushes. You can make shelves and steps out of town with paintbrushes.
Kindly explain. Might go on a paintbrush quest if it's amusing enough.

Anyone else collect skulls and use them as decorations around the house?

and does anyone do this in Oblivion as well?

The one you get from the Dark Brotherhood story-line? That one is the pride of my collection.
I'm a bit concerned because I'm not sure who's talking about Oblivion and who isn't.
I'm with you. F all those bear pelts!! I think I'll just start a new guy to do each specific guild.

Has anyone else has all their ground turn purple on the 360 version. Mine started as soon as I warped to the new wizards tower. Now, every road is purple for no reason at all. I have reloaded, restarted, powered off and booted back up. Nothing will fix it that I can tell....

Hasnt happened to me I and I have it as well. Try re-downloading it see if it helps.

Yesterday I noticed that my loading time is now almost 10 minutes when I start the game. And this is after I cleared the cache. Does anyone know what is going on, or had a similar problem?

This has only happened recentely, but my loading screens freeze my game for about 30 seconds. Especially at the Arcane University.

I turned all purple in the arena yesterday. Saved and powered off/on my 360 and it went away. I haven't even dl'd WT.

Now, can someone please help me with the persuasion mini-game? Speechcraft is one of my major skills, but I suck at it.

Also, in the fighters guild, I apparently need ectoplasm to get some jobs in one of the cities. But no one has told be where to go/what to fight to get it... Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Its fairly simple. Every NPC has two actions they like and 2 they dont. You can tell by their expresion when you highlight the action. Use the big ones on the ones they like a lot and the little ones on the ones they hate.

Go into the chambers of the various churches. I know for a fact that you'll find 4 or 5 of them in the lower chamber of the church in Skingrad.

Does anyone know what the various little items are for such as string, shovel, pickaxe, etc. I cant seem to find a use for them other than to sell to people. Also, is anyone a vampire and choosing to just be one or is it better to cure yourself?

Garradin's (?) Tears Quest Help... (Possible Quest Spoilers)

I got this quest to find these tears. I purchased the book in the Imperial City, found the frost glade, killed the guardian, and found the guy frozen in ice in the middle of the glade. Now what? The update on the active quest doesn't tell me where to go next or what to do. I still haven't actually found the tears, but I seem to be at a bit of a dead end. Anyone do this quest who can help? Thanks...

They're kinda tricky to find. Theres 5 of them around the frozen guy. Its best too look from the grass until you find one so you arent distracted by taking damage.

This game is pretty fun but the performance issues are getting in the way big time. I hold down A every time I restart the game but after a couple of hours of play the game starts loading very very slowly, and since this game requires a whole lot of loading and traveling to buildings............ it can take a huge toll, esp when load times approach a minute.

Any news if they plan on patching this game rather than releasing really shitty extras you have to pay for?

You complain a lot. Everything I read that you type is always complain, complain, complain...... First FFXI now Elder Scrolls :) . But, Yes they are makign a patch for this game but i'm not sure what kind of patch they are working on.
If/When they release a patch I hope that they dont fix the money glitch in Kavatch
What's that you say?
What's that you say?
I'm talking about this glitch:

"To do this you need a horse and the more expensive the weapon you wield the better.
So get your most expensive weapon and wield it. Get on your horse and fast travel to either Kvatch to speak to the orc (female) merchant, or to Silver Road in Cyrodill and speak to a merchant in green clothing.
Once you enter the barter screen, sell your equipped weapon. It will not vanish, allowing it to be sold over and over again for gold. "

I thought everyone knew about it.

Well if I was the last one then everyone knows about it now.

And this will keep raising your Mercentile skill? I know its cheap but Ive beat almost all the quests and id like to max out my guy. Mercentile is one of my major skills but for some reason it's been stuck on the same number forever (Ive sold atleast 40000 worth) and it hasnt even moved. I think it might be a glitch or something?

Have you changed the Haggle bar off of the default lowest setting? If you don't do that, you won't get Mercantile experience.

Big time. One time I was watching 24 and I just kept pressing "A" on my controller while watching the show for an hour and I got 60K and my skill went up a lot. Now I can buy for cheap and sell for more when I haggle.

I know it might seem cheap to cheat but its a long as game and its not like its changing how much fun I have with it. I was getting sick of seeing cool magic items and not being able to purchase them. :D
Once you get to level 15 or so, there's really no problems with getting money, at least as far as I've noticed.
Im at 8, couldnt resist :D

I have nearly 300,000 gold, simply from looting caves. My character can carry quite a bit of loot, so I clean up all of the dead bodies (if they have shit worth selling), and take it back to town.
I know there's already an on-going thread about it, but for anyone that doesn't look in the gaming news forum we're looking for a reason for a supposed recall. Here's the thread:

http://cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92958
Here it is:

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is now rated M for Mature

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board today issued a parental advisory that it has changed the rating of Take-Two subsidiary 2K Games' hit role-playing game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the PC. Originally released with a rating of T for Teen, the game has now been rerated M for Mature, due to "more detailed depictions of blood and gore than were considered in the original rating, as well as the presence of a locked-out art file or 'skin' that, if accessed through a third-party modification to the PC version of the game, allows the user to play with topless versions of female characters." The Xbox 360 version of the game will retain its T for Teen rating because the nude skin is inaccessible in that version of the game.
