GS FAQ

How many copies of a game can I trade in?
You are allowed to trade in 4 copies of the same game (same system) within a rolling 30 day period.

What do I need to trade in an older console?
The console, power cable, av cable, and controller. Sometimes they don't care about USB charge cable but ymmv. 3DS XL trade would be console, charger, and stylus. Some have reported being charged a refurb fee for missing the stylus, but again ymmv (answer stolen from anarchyburger)

FAQ will be entered when those questions get asked frequently.

Does the Pro Membership B2G1 coupon apply to only games, or accessories as well?
The coupon applies to both games and accessories, per the wording on the coupon.

I have a $XX.xx pre-owned reward certificate, and I want to use it on a B2G1 transaction. Should I?
It depends. If the three games are equal value, do not use your certificate. The value of the certificate would be applied to the free game, which would not benefit you. If one game is more expensive, you can use the certificate to make it the same value as the other two games ($5 reward certificate applied to transaction with two $10 games and one $15 game would make all three games $10).

TERMINOLOGY AND LINGO:
ASL/SL: Assistant Store Leader, Store Leader; manager positions at GS.
B2G1: Buy two, get one free. Typically refers to the coupon you receive when becoming Pro.
GCU/BB: Gamer’s Club Unlocked, Best Buy
GS: GameStop
JD: Junior detective, an employee who is out to get someone
LP: Loss Prevention; this is the department that actually bans accounts after being flagged.
TC/TiC: Trade credit.
TIV/TV: Trade in value, or what a game currently trades for. When posting a TV for a game, always use the base value.

Does 10% trade bonus from PUR Pro not apply to G2L? If not, your point is very valid. If it does, then shouldn't it be a wash?
I have only ever received the MSRP for the trade value (59.99) without any additional pro credit.

There are some reports of stores processing it as a return but technically that is not how it is supposed to be done and is essentially just the associate processing it incorrectly.

Edit: and processing it as a return also gives you back the sales tax. TLDR: if you are buying it with the intent of returning it then don't open it and just do a return instead of a G2L.

Is there any benefit to buying new games instead of used on xbone? I am new to collecting on current gen stuff.
Preowned you might not get all the codes/inserts/case but of course you can check in the store to make sure everything is the condition you want before you buy it.

Unless you order online, then it is a crapshoot. You can always return though if it isn't up to your standards.

Given the significant price difference between new and used (during gamestop's frequent sales especially) it is tough for me to justify buying new.

Noticed they have really jacked up some of the prices on games in this B2G2F sale, for example LA Noire is now $14.99 and used to be in the $4 range.  At least the trade value has gone up too, so that might work out well for some.

BTW, do any of you have a good price tracker for GS?

Found a Wii Sports Resort at Goodwill..now do I trade now ($9 base) and get the 20% bonus or wait until it jumps up again in crazy value (assuming it happens again)?

Decisions...

Dang the value drop from $14. I traded Wii sports mid Jan and got $21 after 50% bonus.

I was searching through the threads and on reddit and did not find a definite answer to this.  I have four copies of a game I want to trade at GS.  What is the best way to go about it?  From what I have read, you can usually trade 2 at a time if the person working is nice.  Should I just break it up to two different stores on different days?

Still curious - did your Perfect Dark Totaku ever arrive? Been watching it over the past 4 months, and GS keeps pushing out the date. Oh - and GS increased the pre-order price from $10 to $15!
Still waiting on this one, too. All their new Totaku got a price hike to $15, which I'm not too pleased about.

If your original receipt shows the old price, they should be able to honor it. At least that's what happened when they had a Yugioh pack for $6.99 when they retail for $9.99.

Most associates will only let you trade one title per console per visit (aka one SKU per visit).

I personally just do 1 title per console per visit. If I have two copies of the same game then I will just go to two different GS on the same day. Never had a problem doing this as long as I stay within the usual 30 day trade limits.

Yea it was animal crossing. Maybe because i was adding money to my original preorder. Either way they did it manually
Also paid off my ac switch yay
Odd...I did the exact same thing and it automatically applied. Just went to another store and it was automatic as well.

I’ve had luck trading multiple of the same copy at stores that I’m a regular in, but I don’t recommend doing that unless you have someone else with you. They’re only supposed to accept one SKU per day.

Not flips but some of the Switch game TIVs are at what seems to be close to a maximum these days. With the 30% bonus for pro + trade towards a pre-order the following are at 45.50 (35 base) trade credit as of 2/23:

Kirby Star Allies

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze

Fire Emblem Three Houses

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe

Zelda Link's Awakening

Astral Chain (Highest TIV I have seen for this game in months)

There might be more but that's all I have seen.
Thanks much for the list!

I traded in a bunch of these titles for $45.50 /ea. I'll get em back much cheaper in a future sale.

Strange though, these games sell complete for $40 on EBay .. GS offers $45.50 credit for loose carts (I'm keeping the cases, since there is no guarantee I'll ever get them back). GS math.

---

Also, I did Pokemon flips today (3DS MWT), it works .. rewards are piddly, but oh well. Financed other stuff I bought.

20% applied to all games by applying $5 towards a game on their list. Success. SGA on duty I know did confirm Animal Crossing is also on the list of 20% boosters, in addition to the games in the ad picture.

Also there will be an Animal Crossing "midnight release". I was shocked. I thought midnight releases were dead !?!

is there ever a $10 preowned cert offered anymore? missing from app and browser selection
It's gone. I tried to manupulate the URL SKU number to "get" the page offering the $10 pre-owned cert ... and I found the page with the $10 pre-owned certificate! ... (honestly, just increment the SKU from the $5 cert by 1.)

But when I bought it and entered my one-time passcode, it came back with errors. No points were lost, but it was a wash. It isn't valid any longer.

Maybe GS is worried a $25 can be used with a $10 cert for a free game? Possibly, since many are $35 games. Otherwise, I have no clue. But, it was definitely removed from allowable certs.

[or maybe it's to prevent $10 PSN cards or other 3rd party gift cards?] /shrug

Nope, I think I cancelled the order and preordered in store. Totakus have been a shit show for me, dates get moved over and over (Dark Souls), SKUs get cancelled and brought back (Spyro), then they just show up without warning.

GPGs have gotten so bad in our district that the employees in my price match store are literally hunting for lower prices online in order to discount the game and then add the GPG. I don't think any customers will complain because the final price is always lower than the initial cost of the game without the GPG. It started a couple of weeks ago with one employee, but it's gotten to the point that every employee at this store has caught on. I have a suspicion that the district reshufflings are what caused this since literally no one cared about their numbers just a couple of months ago.

Nothing in their POS system actually prevents them from ringing up multiples of the same SKU on the same transaction. One of my first few trade-ins before I was aware of the limit, I brought in 3 copies of Tri-Force Heroes, and they didn't blink an eye ringing it up all three. A few times later after I knew of the limit put a few duplicates in a stack of games and if the associate doesn't have a great short term memory will just let it through. Usually they say they can't and once I was told they couldn't accept the same title on different systems, but that seemed like a one-off.

Overall, the only hard limit I suspect is 5 over 30. I've done 3 in one transaction same store and 4 in 4 stores in one day without issue. (the great B2G2 on switch titles!) :D/

Thank you for the info. Is it common for xbone games to have codes/inserts? Any reliable resources to find out what originally was packaged and what is included as digital content?

fyi, the limit of 5 is not a hard limit, you could trade in more in one day, but would just get a ban the next day.

i got jd'ed at my home store and manually banned I think during this years flipageddon, though I did trade in like 4 copies of titanfall 2 ps4. It's super annoying though for some people flipageddon is the only time they come out ahead in consumerism madness lol.

Son of a bitch! I tried to pre-order in store four months ago, but the guy said the system wouldn't let him because the expected date was in the past. I never pre-ordered online because I'm not paying $6 shipping. I see today on mytotaku.com that PD is a February 2020 release so I guess the delay is their fault not GS's. But the BS pre-order system certainly is GS's fault!

Thanks for the heads up on the switch games with bonus. Are there any good cheap pre-orders worth considering for the bonus?
Some of the $35 base bumped Switch games were nerfed this morning. Go with caution.

Also the 3DS Pokemon games' TiV was lowered. Loophole is closed.

I have managed to find extra copies of Wii Sports and Minecraft PS3 in my collection. Looks like the values are down on those at the moment. What are the chances those go back up or we get another reserve type bonus deal vs I unload them now and cut my losses since it appears GS is clearing old stock?

A new article has been written about the concept and 2.0 stores. There isn't much new info, but hopefully, they make it out of Tulsa one day.

Ah yes, the always on the way concept stores. The real problem is, they don't have the money to convert every store in this manner.

"Transactions are always good, we always want transactions, but we're trying to get away from the 'transaction first' mentality."

Anyone actually believe that? :^o

GameStop really does suck, but I do hope things turn around and they clear out current management. It would be even worse if we lost the last vestiges of a local in person secondary gaming market in my very rural area. I don't think anyone would fill in the gap if GS went under..

The next consoles will provide them a temporary reprieve. GameStop needs to capitalize on this and change if they want any hope of surviving.

Bad start to the GameStop gambling. One DS game they sent me the wrong version and the copy of Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon I got is a fake, but of course there is no packing slip. Any of have success returning without a packing slip?

Seems pretty evident around here that GS is in clear-out mode for that console generation.
