The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)
Do any of you know if you call MS whether they will allow you to transfer licenses twice in one year? I had a 360 die so I bought another one last November (new Arcade model). I've been using my old 20GB HDD. I didn't find out until July that you had to do a license transfer so I'm not eligible for another one until July 2011. I am planning on buying a 360 Slim this weekend because I'm out of HDD space but it defeats the purpose if I can't transfer all of my DLC to the new console.
Sure, if you can get them to escalate the issue to Level 3 support. I had my current 250GB Elite die from a DVD drive issue a week after I did the license transfer, and they swapped out the system to fix the issue. I had go to through escalation to Level 3 support about 3 weeks of waiting to get the issue fix.

I'd assume they won't be so gracious to you if you're just moving to a new console you bought and not a repair-related issue.
Don't have an answer to your question, unfortunately, but do you need to do a license transfer? What I mean is, in my case, I never bothered, because I'm the only person who uses my console, and 99% of the time, I'm connected to Live. I didn't feel like redownloading all of that content, so I said screw it.
I guess it isn't completely necessary but I am primarily doing this for Rock Band. I just got Rock Band 3 and I want to rip Lego Rock Band and Rock Band 2 to the HDD and have everything in one library along with all of my other DLC. I probably don't need to transfer games I've played and beaten yet.

I really don't understand why. If you can only have the DLC tied to one console at a time why do they care how many times you do a license transfer? If anything, 2 or 3 times a year seems way more reasonable because you can envision many instances where you might legitimately need to transfer the license more than once. I guess I'll call customer support and see what they tell me... I'll be very disappointed if they won't allow it. I mean, I guess I won't be spending another $300 on a console.

OK, I need some clarification. I used up my license transfer back in July. I want to buy a 360 Slim today. I will be transferring the contents of my 20GB HDD to the new 250GB one. Will I be able to play all of the songs in Rock Band that I downloaded to the 20GB HDD or will they not even show up because they are associated with another console? I've made every purchase as "javeryh" and my gamertag has never chhanged. The only reason I'm doing this is for my expanding Rock Band library. I assume in July I can do the license transfer but I want to obviously be able to play everything in the meantime. Any help would be great.

Yes, you'll be able to play everything in the meantime. As long as you are connected to Live with the GT that purchased the content, it will all work properly. The only real reasons you would absolutely need to use the license transfer tool is if more than one GT likes to use content on your machine or if you are not always able to connect to Live. I've changed consoles twice (one died, and then I bought a new one). I've never bothered to transfer the licenses. When MS "repairs" your system (ie, sends you someone else's previously broken one), they transfer the license for you, but you still have to download everything again, which is a real pain if you have a ton of content.

I hate how some games are loud in the 360S. Has anyone else noticed this? Newer games don't do it, but some older games do.. off the top of my head, I know that Mirror's Edge and Band Hero are both extremely noisy in the drive and I have to install them to even play it. Does this happen to anyone else?

Oh yeah. Only game I can think of at the moment is Enslaved, but I know there are others. It's the shell of the console that's vibrating. Apparently, different games spin at different speeds, which is why some are noisy and others are not.

OK - every GameStop in my area is out of the 250GB model but I can get a 4GB model for $200 and it comes with a $25 gift card that I can apply towards buying the 250GB HDD separately (on sale for $110 this week) bringing my total cost for the 4GB system plus 250GB HDD to $285. Is there any reason I'd want to hold out for the 250GB bundle to be back in stock?

Is there a nice high speed reliable 16gb USB drive someone can recommend I can purchase on newegg for the 360? I'm needing to being over DLC to my friends for RB partys but the 8gb is not enough :(

Not unless you just have to have Forza 3 Vanilla Edition and a download token of Alan Wake (game only, no DLC) for $15 more.

Question on 360 prepaid dlc/download codes

Let's say I enter code to see if it's been used and I see it hasn't but I don't hit the confirm button to start the download. Can the code still be used after that or has it been used up?

How long has this "you have 10 minutes to reconnect" thing been around? I just noticed it about two minutes ago and I already want to punch it in the face.

For those who haven't seen it, when you get booted from XBL (once every three seconds if you're on Time Warner), you get a notification that tells you you have "10 minutes to reconnect," and then it comes up every minute afterward until you manually reconnect. It's not cool at all, and I'd turn my notifications off completely if it wasn't for the achievements. I might just disable it from connecting altogether.

I did a license transfer that somehow didn't take, because my network is acting up and I get a notification every minute telling me to reconnect before it kicks me from a game that I paid for and I don't get another transfer until September, even though I did the transfer a couple weeks ago. The irony is that if I had pirated this shit I'd be playing it right now without a hitch. The only thing DRM is good for is screwing paying customers.

Yeah, activation sucks. I just try to avoid getting anything with it :(

That sucks the transfer didn't work too. Mine that I just did last month looked like it went wonky, but then seems to have gone okay after all :whistle2:/ LOTS of dead links and stuff on the DRM page though, which doesn't inspire confidence.

I'm sure if you call up support and plead your case they'd do a transfer for you. Just be like this interruption is ruining my xbox experience.

Did you redownload the game after the transfer? You have to download it again to apply the new license to your console. That's the only thing I can think of. Otherwise contact Microsoft. They should have no problem doing a transfer for you.

Yeah, I redownloaded them all and e-mailed MS and all that, it just does good to complain here, too. I guess I can still play them, I just have to stop and reconnect every few minutes or so. I don't know if it's my connection or if it's Xbox Live or if it's the weather or what but it doesn't seem to have any problems staying connected when I'm not running a game. I guess I'll see what they say, I'm like "I'm not asking for any special treatment, just access to the games I already paid for."

How do i turn my Xbox live Gold auto renew off? I got the deal where i use auto renew to get a year for 30, and now i cant seem to figure out how to turn it off using xbox.com and my xbox 360 dashboard. Help!

Buy an ethernet adapter or use an old router with dd-wrt.

What do you mean? If you have a cable to it, you can just plug the Xbox in. If this is an older style Xbox and you want to use Wifi instead, you'd buy Microsoft's Wifi adapter. If it's a new "slim" style Xbox, the Wifi is built (and both have Ethernet built in which is preferable if possible).

its the older arcade edition no wifi. but behind it there doesnt appear to be the space for it to fit in. the router i have is 50 ft away from the xbox so i cant just plug it in. here is a pic i found of the back

The yellow box is around the HDMI output with the regular AV port above it.

Your wirelss adapter will connect to one of the I/O ports to the right where the usb and ethernet jacks are.
Buy this and use your ethernet port..

your link is not working for me.

the thing is, i can get the adapter on the cheap. couldnt i just plug it in the back of the 360 and let it hang since it doesnt appear that it will fit in flushly?

would something like this work

And no, the item you linked above won't work. The only WLAN adapter for the 360 is the MS-branded ones, the white (802.11A/B/G) or the black (802.11A/B/G/N) units.

What I linked above is an Ethernet-to-wireless bridge, which allows you to connect the Ethernet port of your 360 to a device that will bridge that connection into an existing wireless network. It's less expensive to do it that way, though it takes more work.

The MS-branded adapter is more expensive, though it's the easiest way to connect a 360 to a wireless network. Yes, it does click right into a small spot on the back of the 360 and has a USB cord that plugs into the USB port on the back of the 360.

i really appreciate all the help guys, i can get the microsoft one for a game and 20 bucks so i think im going to do that, the only reason i was posting was because i was looking at the back of my 360 and the hdmi port appears to be blocking the place where it would clip on....ha i feel like such a noob

Huh, I don't know where/how it actually attaches, though surely Microsoft's thought of that on their own product :whistle2:O If they haven't, let us know and we can make fun of them!

That's an older picture (non-HDMI system), though it's the same scenario for a non-Slim system.

I was just at Best Buy recently and the sales price for the Xbox 360 official wireless N adapter was $69.99. Ugh...when are these things going to go down in price?

Especially the wireless G version at Gamestop since I don't really need Xbox Live except for buying content/silver account. The router in my house is upstairs far away, really don't want to lug my monitor and Xbox 360 setup back and forth all the time just to go online.

Is it possible to download content off of Xbox Live from a computer, put it on a USB drive, and transfer it to my Xbox 360?

At first, I figured the official wireless N adapter was needed for the newer 4 GB slim model Xbox 360. Seems that even the cheapest current model of Xbox 360 doesn't even need the wireless N adapter.

I guess there are more than a handful of people including myself who haven't upgraded their premium/core/pro/arcade/elite model Xbox 360s yet.

Deadly Premonition is an absolute must-keep for me...but my copy has visible distortion on the disc, as so many of my Xbox games do.

Getting sick of this... but anyway it it worth buying a new copy and selling the old one? I don't know what if any implications this has, but it seems...bad.

Don't worry about it.

Or, if you insist on making yourself really crazy, grab some of your older games (if you have any) and/or DVDs. You'll notice that many of them have the same discoloration. Yeah, it seems to be more common with 360 discs for whatever reason, but it happens everywhere.

I managed to dig up this bit of info...http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk-a...i-about-milky-swirls-all-over-my-dvds.html#15

Could anybody direct me to a wireless adapter alternative for less than $30 (preferably somewhere paypal is accepted)? My router is on the other side of the house and I don't really know much about networking and such.

Edit: Would this work?

You said you don't know much & asking if that product would work kinda proves that. (sorry if this seems harsh, I don't mean it to be)

You should up your budget and just get a 360 adapter & call it a day.

Not harsh at all. I'm going to get this since I don't really know what I'm looking for and it's a few dollars cheaper than a used adapter from GS.

Thanks...hope that's accurate and describing the same thing :whistle2:/ I've ONLY seen this on Xbox discs, and it seems like at least as many have it as don't. Even if it is just cosmetic they ought to fix it so people don't worry.

Not sure if this is the thread, but I think I have a hardware problem with my S Xbox. This probably isn't super important-but I think maybe my tilt sensor in the unit doesn't work right. It's vertical, and I'd noticed it would boot up with the indicator lit as though the controller were controller 2...which would be the correct light if it were horizontal instead of vertical.

I happen to be using a second controller right now, and for 10 minutes it's been flickering back and forth between the controller 1 and 3 lights being on...which would be the same issue.

Guess it's nothing to worry about...

I'm not sure if this is a common problem, but my new 360 Slim's fan is making a pretty loud buzzing sound as soon as I turn it on. It's not the problem that people have when putting a disc in, as it makes the sound even when it's idle on the dashboard. I wouldn't mind it if it wasn't all that noticeable, but I can hear the sound over my PC running, any game I'm playing and even the air conditioning running. Should I just exchange it? I'm scared that all the 360s make this loud noise, even when they're supposed to be "whisper quiet".

I am not sure if this is explained in the thread but how does the Xbox live family plan work? Does all four members have to be in the same household or have the same address to be consider a member?

Is there a source for official Microsoft power adapters for the Xbox 360 S (aka "Slim")? I searched on Microsoft's store, but can't find any. There are 3rd party ones on amazon, but they generally get terrible reviews.

For the Xbox 360 S is there any reason not to save the $50-$60 and buy the generic 250gb hard drive instead of the official microsoft 1? I do not care about playing old xbox titles by the way.

From what I understand, you need to call Microsoft tech support and order one through them. It's stupid, but theres no other way I know of to get an official PSU.

On another note, is there any way to make the stupid power brick quieter on the 360 S? It sounds twice as loud as the console itself and it's starting to get on my nerves. Good job Microsoft..... yea, the console itself is technically whisper quiet.....because you moved all the noise to the stupid power adapter. Honestly, this is the first piece of electronic equipment I've ever seen where the damn power adapter actually makes noise. If the PS3's power cable is just a stupid little cable, why can't MS do the same?

It's cause Sony was smart enough to put the power supply INSIDE the console.
