The "Kamille stole Char's kick!" anime thread

So that's where those bug things and cone looking things are from....always wondered that when I was playing SRW: Alpha 3 back then.
I loved Azumanga Daioh. I've been trying to find more comedy slice-of-life animes ever since watching it.
Lucky Star. Now.
BTW I finished Azumanga Daioh this week. EXCELLENT show.
Nice. I only managed to watch their first year school, but I read all the manga. Extremely funny.

Has Lucky Star finished its entire run yet? I've heard some good things about it.

I'm also debating on buying the Azumanga manga. Maybe if I can find a good deal.
My mom seems to be getting into anime (thanks to her fiance's kid), and I was wondering what would be a good suggestion for her to look into? I was actually thinking of suggesting Death Note to her, because it seems like the kind of thing she might get into. Plus, it would give me an excuse to finally catch up in DN.
Death Note might be a little bit on the heavy side to start someone off with (but then again, I have no clue what your mom likes, so maybe she will enjoy it). However, the safest route would probably be any Miyazaki film. High quality, good story, and it doesn't take much time or commitment (2-hour movie against 37 episodes).

If a Miyazaki movie was the first anime I saw and I walked away thinking that all anime was like that, I'd never watch anime again.

I have never liked that guy's stuff and I'm not really sure what the appeal is.

You suck!

Mom seems to not mind the heavy stuff, so long as it's interesting (which is why I was thinking of suggesting DN). She seemed pretty into the actual animation, too, so I'll consider a Miyazaki flick.

Dammit, I so wanted to go to AX this year, but I didn't have the funds to go, or the reassurance that I could get those days off from work.

Try a mix of things:

I know in the case of my mom, it was stuff that I had rented from the video store in the past: Lupin the 3rd movies, Giant Robo, Rurouni Kenshin, YuYu Hakusho.

If the heavier stuff is something she wouldn't mind then Death Note might work as well as Ghost in the Shell (though for that I would recommend the tv series as I am not a big fan of the movies, but the movies work as well), Vampire Hunter D, Nausicca, Rahxephon, Noir, Master Keaton, Azumanga Daioh (though I know that Azumanga isn't heavy by any means I am just throwing in to recommed it for recommending sake), Gankutsuou, Escaflowne, Boogiepop Phantom for starters

Some humorous and omega level Mikuru Beams.

I agree, I mean I like Princess Mononoke but everything else of his that I have seen has just fell completely flat with me.

:applause:

Thank you! I knew you had good taste when I saw how much you liked Hellsing. Another one of those things I thought everyone liked but me. I hate Miyazaki movies.

I don't have a problem with his movies. I like Nausicaa the best. I never have a yearning to see his movies out of the blue like I do with other shows though.

Yeah, Princess Mononoke was okay, but I couldn't make it through even half of Spirited Away. Sorry, but I didn't feel whisked away to some mystical, completely nonsensical land nor did I particularly care what happens to the main character. I still don't know and I still don't give a damn.

On a positive note, I am enjoying Twelve Kingdoms a lot already.

Don't like Miyazaki? Eh, that's fine. I've enjoyed the ones I've seen, although I'm not like those people who worships the ground he walks on.

Glad to hear you're enjoying Twelve Kingdoms, though, because if you weren't...:shame:

QFT! you do suck!

I guess Mononoke was my first full anime-- I remember seeing a preview for it at a screening of Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation fest and I was amazed. I was also surprised Claire Danes and Billy Bob Thornton were doing voices for it (they were popular at the time.) I think I might watch it again today after work :)

I also saw parts of Akira when I was like 7 or 8. My sister was watching it. I saw Tokyo blow up, saw the girl get beat up, saw Tetsuo turn into a huge monster, and some other choice scenes. I was completely spooked for like a week after with plenty of nightmares

what was everyone else's first shows here?

I was surprised that they finally got a voice right in the Bleach dub last night.

Unless you count Superbook and The Flying House, the first one I can recall is Fist of the North Star and Dirty Pair:Affair of Nolandia on Network One in 1994 I think. I can't remember which I saw first. All I knew was it was cool as hell and I wanted more. Dirty Pair is still awesome as hell. I don't remember much about FOTNS though.

I don't care much for the show, but the Bleach dub has been pretty much flawless this entire time.

Hollow Ichigo
is the first character to be on par with the original JP voices. Maybe even preferable, since I felt the original got way too screechy when he manifests in the outer world later on. And not because of the filter, either. Bosch made him more feminine sounding, but more menacing at the same time. It's good and creepy.
what was everyone else's first shows here?
My first ever was probably Sailor Moon when I was just a wee lad, but that was before I knew what anime was and I just thought it was some cartoon with funky looking animation. The first one that I knew was anime was probably Cowboy Bebop or Inuyasha or something that was on Adult Swim a few years ago.
Bleach dub is fine as are most in this day and age.
The translations and readings are fine, but the casting is not for someone who likes characters to sound close to the original language's actors.

Unico and the Island of Magic
It was on the Disney Channel and my parents taped it off TV when I was very young. I picked up a legit VHS of it a few years back for my collection.

The first anime I can remember getting into was DBZ. :/ Maybe it was because it was my first series, but I still find myself defending it to a point, unless someone brings up the Freiza Saga. >:/

When do we leave Namek?

oh man, I almost forgot. I saw the original FOTNS movie before Mononoke...guess it didn't leave as much of an impression. I just remember getting stoned with friends and making tons of jokes involving the line "you're already dead."

not meaning to spam, but if anyone wants a very cheap, new copy of the Speed Grapher/Desert Punk vol.1 2-pack, drop me a PM. it has two seperate cases for each one. I impulse bought it for SG...but decided to buy the eps off of XBL. $15 shipped and it's yours, I paid $23 shipped from rightstuff.

DBZ manga in elementary school is where it all started. i think the first animated thing i ever saw was a movie called Big Wars. then it was probably Ninja Scroll. first series ... probably Digimon on Fox Kids

i started watching MONSTER. it started with a bang but right now i'm a little concerned. it's long (74 eps) and right now it feels like the "filler" has started. i'm on ep 13, the last few were pretty uninteresting. just want to know if it's worth it? PLEASE NO SPOILERS :whistle2:#
When do we leave Namek?
As soon as:

1) I finish the Spirit Bomb
2) Freeza is done charging to 100%
3) Namek Explodes

stick with it :) there's some slower parts in the series, but they won't last very long. i feel like it stays on track with the story and character development most of the time.

If you give up on Monster, I'll never let you live it down. Everywhere you go, there I'll be - scorning you and your poor decision-making skills.

I actually saw the BECK Starter Set at the Strawberries downtown on Saturday. What's the release date for it?

Oh, while the voices are good, Greg Ayres does both normal speaking and singing for Koyuki, which unfortunately doesn't give the same result from the Japanese version - where they used different people for his normal speech and his singing.

A Japanese doctor living in Germany gets framed for some murders and is on the run as a fugitive while he pieces the real story together and tries to catch the real killer. Along the way he uncovers some crazy shit involving government experiments on children. I can't really say much more than that. There are a bunch of different characters who get their own arcs, which is always completely related to the story or the other characters involved. of course, it becomes a crazy, tangled-web of a mystery, but not hard to follow.

I think what sets it apart from other anime is that the story is told in a very direct way and is genuinely interesting and suspenseful on its own merits-- so you won't have stuff like aliens from space stealing the Earth's mana flow in order to kill humanity and the chick with huge tits who needs to stop them :)
