The "Kamille stole Char's kick!" anime thread

Street Fighter II V now! (I already own this though.)

Rei, I'll do anything to support new sources of anime. If it was sub-only I'd still be all over it. [adult swim] needs some competition so they don't get lax.

I know, but it's so hard for me to watch something dubbed. It just distracts me from the experience.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on storing DVDs? I'm looking for some nice shelving perhaps. I've reached a point between my video games and anime DVDs where I literally have no more room left in my house unless I box them all up, and I don't want to do that.
I don't know if anyone noticed it, but Ergo Proxy is being shown of Fuse of all channels. I find it so weird that Fuse is showing anime....
I don't know if I have Fuse but I'll check.

well i finished Monster finally and here's some thoughts and questions.

firstly it was pretty good, def. worth watching, but did get slow at times over the 74 eps. and Nina was pretty to look at so yay for that.

now for the questions:

So what was Johann trying to do all this time? Nina/Anna said he was trying to commit the perfect suicide by killing everyone that knew him but he didn't die in the end. so did his plan fail? what was the point of Johann's killings and why did he need/want a perfect suicide? was johann really the devil or just a severely disturbed man? how did he acquire his "powers" of suggestion? and why was he not in a room that had bars when he was in his coma?

all in all a good show but definitely some loose ends.

Bad news for fansubbers. The update on the 26th is SERIOUSLY fucked up (assuming it's true).
Fake.

So, any one here seen Welcome to the NHK? I'm 5 episodes in and really enjoying it so far. The main character acts exactly like I would in certain situations. I'll have to try to find more of these 'real life' drama animes once I'm done. Do they have a name for this category?

I've been buying the manga from Waldenbooks. Good series.

They're called slice of life shows.
I'll have to try to find more of these 'real life' drama animes once I'm done.
Honey and Clover. Now.

You just reminded me, I've been intending to watch His and Her Circumstances ever since hearing about it 2 years ago. Still working on that backlog...

Are there any sites with a list of slice of life animes? Wikipedia seems to have failed me.

Kare Kano was the first anime that I DLed and the first anime that I didn't finish because each episode was more of the same.
Been reading the Berserk manga and I just finished Vol. 13. Wow. I'm finally getting to see what happens after the end of the show.
Berserk is awesome, and it keeps getting better.

Just bought the LE volume 2 of Black Lagoon tonight. Gonna watch it before I go to bed.

I also got Green Green and Grenadier. *yay fanservice*
Beck is another good choice for that slice of life fix.
Thats what I'm watching now. About halfway through I believe. Just curious, would FLCL fall under the same category?
I also got Green Green and Grenadier. *yay fanservice*
I have a feeling you'd like 009-1. You should check it out. I actually just ordered the first volume of Black Lagoon. Hopefully it's as good as everybody is saying.
Just curious, would FLCL fall under the same category?
Parts of it maybe? But overall, I'd say no.

Mm... got Yu Yu Hakusho collection 6 today and yeah... this show is still awesome. Dare I say, it's getting even better than it was in the Dark Tournament saga. Seriously, this show never misses a beat, even after 70-some episodes. This one goes through episode 84, so hopefully it won't end on a cliffhanger. Hmm... so lessee... two volumes left after this and then I'll finally have seen the whole 112 episode series.

I only saw a little of Yu Yu Hakusho on Cartoon Network, but it seemed interesting.

Yeah, I'm stunned to be seeing a long Shonen Jump show that's got no filler. I mean, this entire series so far has been gold.

I watched YYH on Cartoon Network back when it first came on and I really liked it... saw it up until the big Dark Tournament fight. It was a completely different show uncut though. A lot more violent, but a lot funnier too since they didn't cut out the dirty jokes. There's really nothing I don't like about this show.

Man, I'm tempted to pick up Black Lagoon right now. I know I'll love that shit. Though, I'm really trying to wait as long as possible so that I can marathon the whole first series and not feel the sadness that is a cliffhanger ending at the end of a DVD.

I think they'll start to release the second season DVDs in October IIRC. I usually don't buy individual volumes when they first come out (I prefer waiting for complete collections). However, I have been making exceptions recently.

On another topic, what is it with MediaBlasters/Anime Works releasing more sub-only stuff? I saw Princess Princess and Kashimashi at Best Buy and they were both sub only. Don't they realize a lot of people already get fan-sub stff online? A dub is one of the only things that can make an official release stand out from fansub now. I don't see how anyone can justify having to pay the same price for a sub-only title as one would for a hybrid.

I don't have a problem with it if the video and audio quality are better than they would be if a second audio track was included. Then again, I never watch dubs so I suppose I wouldn't care no matter what.

Because I kind of already am. I never listen to the dub track so the release might as well be sub-only. Dubs cost a lot of money to produce, and if a studio feels a series isn't going to turn enough profit then the show won't get one. A good example are the up coming Victorian Romance Emma box sets. This also allows them to sell it at a cheaper price. I don't mind not having to pay the "dub tax." ;)

A dub is far from the only thing that can make an official release stand out. Everything from extras to video and sound quality do that.

It's the main thing that cannot be done by fansubbers though.

My thing is I don't see how the companies expect to sell one volume of a subbed title for the same amount as a hybrid. That's like charging the same amount for a plain hamburger that you would for a burger with cheese IMO.

I guess I won't really be concerned until bigger companies like Geneon start doing it a lot. I mean, if they are only going to sub, then why don't the orginial Japanese studios just sub and release the DVDs themselves instead of licensing titles to companies in the US?

The SRP on Kashimashi is $10 less than the a normal anime dvd. So needless to say it isnt the same price as dvds with dubs. Even FYE has all 3 volumes for $12.95.

I'm sure most licensers have tried to get sub only releases, but the cost to press & distribute two different releases probably wouldnt justify the difference in license costs.

Bandai Visual. They're doing it now. They also had a interesting reply as to why they do sub only releases:
Yes. We like to concentrate on presenting our products to the really sophisticated American anime fans. We know they don't need any dubs.
Also there are a lot of sub fans, myself included, who don't download fansubs. I don't like stealing anime.

I could have sworn it was $19.99 at Bestbuy and then Black Lagoon regular was only $5 higher. Maybe I was wrong though. The Gunbusters are $39.99 for sub.

All I can say is good luck to them.

Bandai Visual's stuff is the exception, mainly because they're fucking idiots when it comes to marketing. Though thanks to my employ discount at my store, I can pick up Gunbuster 2 for like $20 per DVD, which is fine.

Yeah, no one actually pays retail price. I got the Gunbuster 2 DVDs for 20-25 each. And I'm more than willing to pay a slightly higher price for the quality Bandai Visual gives me. Their DVDs look far better than any other anime DVDs out there.

Speaking of pricey sub-only releases. How about them Blu-Ray/HD-dvds that came out this week from Bandai Visual. Only $85 each (yes, they're imports).

I hope Tekkon Kinkreet does well here. Since its the first official US BR anime release, it'll probably make or break Sony releasing the rest of their anime catalog here. I personally would love to see Blood+, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Cowboy Bebop the movie & Steamboy hit shelves here. Paying $40-50 for imports is too much.

Blood+ needs a release announcement NOW. Sony is killing me.

Knowing Sony, they're probably gonna wait til the series finishes then either release season sets, or one big-ass boxset.

AFAIK its the first anime series they've done. As its a 50 episode one (which would average 12-13 volumes from the other licensers), it'll probably take a lot of effort they dont want to deal with. The only reason i see Sony wanting to license the series is so they can capitalize on the hopefull success of the live action americanized movie.

Though I hate to say it, it'll probably be a while before we see anything about Blood+.

Big ass boxset sounds good. At least they are getting good airplay on adult swim so hopefully it will get a proper DVD release. I guess I'll just go old school and get some VHS tapes in the mean time.

Wow, L'Arc En Ciel is doing the first theme for Gundam 00. That, along with a pretty damn good staff (damn you, Fukuda+wife for being horrible) and nice-looking mecha designs, is making me very excited.

I just hope that the Gundams aren't too overpowered.

For people who watch One Piece:

How good is the Skypiea part of the show? I read up to the beginning of Baroque Works in the manga, and now I started downloading the Baroque Works episodes. I've heard CP9 is when it gets really good, so I was wondering if it was worth it to skip the insane amount of episodes that happens in Skypiea. However, if it's good too, I'll download and watch them also. I'm just glad I got to skip through almost all of the "Get the crew together" episodes. That was part of what turned me off originally how it took forever to get past the first couple villians like Kuro and Krieg and Arlong. Although I did end up loving the whole Arlong arc.

Thank GOD if this is truly true....

But, if you ever wanted to see Luffy beat up Eminem, it's worth a go. I'd stick with just reading the manga for it, though. It's not worth the download time to watch the episodes.

It's too bad that the show still has a character named "Allelujah Baptism."

Anyway, I'll probably pick up Bleach Vol. 5 at work today. Been holding off on watching past the first disc since I know this show's pretty addictive, so I want to watch an entire arc rather than space it out.

It's too bad that the video and audio quality on Viz's DVDs is nowhere near what the Japanese R2 DVDs has (and yes, I've got some of the R2's.)

And a character named Lockon, whose Gundam's is a ranged unit.

Or a character with a supposedly Middle Eastern descent with a name like Setsuna F. Seiei. Doesn't sound Middle Eastern to me.

Mega disappointment -- my store's not even carrying Bleach Vol. 5. Typical. So yeah, I dunno what I'm gonna do.

Hmm... and for some reason, I'm tempted to try out Akira again. I liked it back when I first saw it, but I think I'd understand it more now.
