Finally beat the game last night.
My earlier comments stand, and I'd give the game an 8.0. And that's honestly being generous, if it wasn't Zelda (one of my favorite franchises) it would probably be a point lower at least.
The ocean king temple (for reasons noted above), the controls, and the dungeons being pretty bland and simple just kept it from living up to usual Zelda perfection for me.
I'm at the final dungeon approach, and I'm only finishing it so it doesn't sit on my shelf for three weeks while I don't play it and my GF queue stagnates. One of the worst Zelda games I've played. You've mentioned many of the reasons: linear puzzles, awkward (but not bad) controls, and the worst offense is that this is a Zelda game, but there's nothing epic about it. I couldn't give a

about any of the characters, except perhaps Oshu.

Tetra, she's immaterial; Linebeck, IMO, doesn't do a thing to redeem himself, Jolene is boring, and Zauz and many other characters are just slapped on. It's terrible, terrible writing for a Zelda title. I've never been so ambivalent towards a Zelda game (I suppose you can call my ire ambivalence - after all, I am going to finish the game).
And the sailing...christ.
There's something compelling about the game, and I've yet to figure it out. Perhaps it has that "just one more thing right ahead" compelling reward system that makes Zelda games so addictive?
Glad I rented this instead of bought it.
