The Official E-Bay Scalping Thread

I just managed to sell my 60 GB system with a $1040 BIN + $60 shipping, with immediate payment required. Had no one bit at that price I would have probably kept it. I'm just glad I didn't have to camp out, it wouldn't have been worth it at all.
Amazingly the seller gave the buyer positive feedback and is going through with the deal.
Ouch I know the seller, have bought Dreamcast games from him, he's 100% reputable/reliable.
yeah, I just received notification of payment but it is in the form of an eCheck. The email said to not ship until the funds have been cleared into my PayPal account which takes about 4 business days. Should I be worried about this? Once the eCheck clears and the money is in my PayPal account is there any way I can get screwed?
You are 100% safe. Just wait for the eCheck to clear. I'd rather have an eCheck over a credit card payment any day of the week.

It's better to wait at this moment to sell your ps3s honestly, at least after thanksgiving when people get into the Xmas shopping. Prices will go up once again.

And to the people coming to this thread just to mock people getting low selling prices, talk about petty and pathetic trolling.

I'm having a field day seeing all these stories about people trying to get PS3s but these ones about them selling for barely for what the seller paid for is too much.
"The seller ended this listing early to sell to the high bidder(s) at current bid price."

Figures they don't understand how ebay works either. People use this tactic all the time to relist later or sell to a higher person.

Just curious, if you auctioned your ps3 and weren't satisfied with the amount it sold for, could you issue a refund and relist it without getting any feedback or paying any paypal fees/final fees?
Just curious, if you auctioned your ps3 and weren't satisfied with the amount it sold for, could you issue a refund and relist it without getting any feedback or paying any paypal fees/final fees?
You could do that, but you'd likely get a negative feedback and you would not get your fees refunded. Then the feedback might make it harder to sell next time. Really, though, on an item like this, just make the starting bid the minimum you'd accept. You pay the max listing fee for anything over $100 or $250 or so anyway (I forget the exact amount). The fee is $4.80 or something at that level - might as well start it at $1000 or $1200 or whatever you think is your minimum.

yeah, I set a reserve of $1,200 (my only goal was to double my money to get a PS3 in March or whenever, but obviously more would have been better) and literally it went within the last 5 seconds - I kept hitting refresh as it was ending and with 5 seconds left it was still at $1,000... The eBay fees were roughly $30 and I'm sure when I add in PayPal and shipping it will be close to $100 (I also had $50 shipping so my profit is probably only going to be $550 or so).

Only $550? That's pretty good in my book, obviously not as good as the $1000+ as before, but that's enough to get you a PS3 later for only $50 plus tax.

Yeah, I'm quite happy with the sale and profit. Now I can get one in the spring guilt free!

im happy i made $2550 on it....and kept ALL THE FRIKIN SCAMMERS away...one ALMOST GOT ME tho...tried to bid $5000 at the last couple minutes but retracted it and i went ADD TO BLOCKLIST, SUBMIT bwahahahaha :whistle2:D

I will probably put mine up for auction sometime after Thanksgiving (or whenever I recieve it; I am first up at my Gamestop for their next shipment).

Thanks to whoever posted the blocklist a few pages back. I will definitely use it!

Isnt it technically still possible for them to cancel out by calling cc company or paypal? I would much rather take the hit on ebay reputation than pay 1500 more than I had to. I imagine this will be happening all over the place.

I wonder if that buyer regrets spending that dough, now that the PS3's are selling on the $1,000 border line? Lol, I wouldn't doubt he's kicking himself.

I wouldn't doubt it, someone foolishly buys a PS3 ...say for $2,400. Now he sees them going for $990-1,000. More than likly the buyer might come up with an excuse, to get out of the auction he won and get his/her money back.

What I also find a bit amusing seeing all these desperate sellers having models/escorts holding PS3s in hopes of big bucks. yet...he probably just spent that much in order for her to show up to hold the PS3.

ok i bought a ps3 premium for 650 and im offering 4 games which i will buy then ship for 1324. i gave free overnight shipping and insurance. If im right i should be making about 300 dollars:

1324
- 650 (ps3)
- 40.48(ebay charges)
- 240 (games)
- 50 (paypal charges) not sure if this is accurate
- 30 shipping
- 30 insurance

=283.52 in profit

you guys think this is a good deal?
or you think i should work out a deal with this guy to get out of ebay fees?
lol im kinda new to ebay how exactly do i do this?

NEVER Bundle games with your ebay auction. ONLY bundle stuff if you say it's going to go over blah blah.

When I sold my Xbox 360 tons of people included 3 + games and an extra controller RIGHT next to my acution and sold for the same as mine.
well he already won the bid on ebay... is there a way i can dodge the ebay fees for now?
Not really. Don't ship without seller protection though. Its worth the fees to be protected from a fraudulent credit card chargeback.

Also, LMAO about people trying to scalp Wii's. Don't people know Nintendo is shipping millions of these before xmas?

wow the guy who won my auction wants me to send it to a different name at a different address because it's a "gift".................hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I guess i'm gonna have to relist.

There are too many Mom's who are oblivious to the situation and panic. I'm betting Wii's maintain a reasonable price all the way to xmas. Already sold 2 Wii's on ebay and have netted around 500 profit. Per unit time, it's better then the ps3.

I have a ps3 60gb for sale too, but my uncle called and was saying they were talking to some best buy managers that were saying Sony is going to ship 4 million by december 1st? is my uncle a fuckin' moron? or is this true?
What's so bad about sending to a different address?
There are a whole lot of paypal accounts that are stolen via Phishing. So they always have you send it to another location and another name (guy who stole the account) since they cannot really change the verified adress on that account.

Did you try calling him? I have a guy who wants to do the same thing, but I basically told him "no".

Thanks. Is that pretty much the only thing wrong with sending it to an unconfirmed address?

The reason I'm asking is because I sold my PS3 to someone who didn't have a confirmed address listed in their Paypal account.

yeah, that's pretty risky in my opinion. Basically somone who phishes an account can just set it like that and there's real no reason why somone paying with paypal should be having an unconfirmed address.

Even if the address is confirmed there are other ways they can get you with that.

The worst part about it is you won't find out about it until a month later or so when the person who got phished reports it to Paypal. Basically Paypal just jacks the money back straight from you.

And I didn't call the guy personally, but I know some people who try that to see if they go off scared. But honestly I think even if I call him it's not going to prove anything.

Om the flip side, it certainly isn't a guarantee you are being ripped. I have sold 4 or 5 things (much cheaper than PS3's) in the last two weeks where the buyers have paid with unconfirmed addresses despite my explicit instructions not to. In each case I refunded and asked for a repayment. In all but one of those (and that was a newbie buyer) they fixed whatever problem they had, obtained a confirmed address, and repaid. They were all different reasons - someone had wanted it shipped elsewhere for a gift, another moved, things like that. It does happen, and people will completely ignore the auction instructions without being devious about it :D.

However, it is an enormous flaw in ebay that they have the PayPal and immediate payment required options, but not the ability to restrict that to confirmed addresses. There's no reason they shouldn't do that.

Heck, I didn't confirm my bank account and address on Paypal until a couple of months ago, and I've been using it for years with no flak from sellers.

Gentlemen....I have a 20 gig for sell...It got up to 850.00 on last auction but i think i can go at least a $1,000. should i relist now or wait untill after Black Friday so these mothers and such can see how there are none in the stores?

So someone won your auction and your gonna screw them over? If you had no reserve i think you should settle at 850. Also a couple of us sold our 60 gigs for 1,000 so dont think you will be getting that much for a 20 gig right now.

Naw man...i wouldnt do that..my reserve was $1,000. So it ended at $850.00.....anybody else have an opinion?

I personally wouldn't want to go through the trouble. But if you don't mind giving it another go, maybe you should relist it.

Give it up, because you won't be able to sell a 20GB for $1,000. The market's done crashed.

$850 is alot for a useless 20 gig. Seriously. You will wind up making $300 profit...not too bad.

true, with many things it doesnt matter quite as much. however with a high value item like the ps3 I tend to take way more caution.

on a side note prices seemed to have gone up a little bit. Probably because it's a weekday and people are shopping at work.

i sold two PS3 60 GB to a prestigous ebayer for 4000.00 total. This was before the massive price drop. He paid immediately via a confirmed paypal address and I shipped out the items. Now, he wants his money back and is threatening to do a chareback. The money IS IN MY BANK ACCOUNT and I have followed ALL paypal guidelines to be insured by a chareback but I called paypal and they still act like there is always a chance paypal can't defend against charebacks. WTF, I have 500+ feedback and have never been concened about chargebacks until now. Help?

Tell the Dude he's a twat for paying $4000 for items worth $1200. He's screwed, you're not obligated in any way.

Is this the guy who was hoping to resell them before Christmas for even more? I remember someone posting about selling one for $2000 to a buyer who said that. Not that it makes much difference, but I say tough luck to the buyer in this case (but especially if he hoped to resell for profit later ;)).. I think if you sent to a confirmed address you are OK. He has acknowledged receipt, right? I guess PayPal can do whatever they please, but it seems to me you are covered under their Seller protection plan. If they plan to weasel out of that then who knows. Maybe they are just being cautious with you on the phone - though it would be a whole lot more reassuring if they guaranteed your safety (assuming you followed all the rules for it - but that could be it, they don't want to say you are covered 100% in case there is something you didn't do right).

Keep the email and offer it to Paypal as proof. Under the Paypal TOS, you can't do a chargeback for buyer's remorse. Also make sure that you sent that bitch with a sig confirmation, insurance, and maybe even a return receipt just in case. Also, withdraw all your money from yuor checking account except for your required minimum balance for a while if you can. I'm a little nervous too, and I sold mine for only 1900.

It's definately annoying. This guy is a power seller (as am I off and on) so I know he was guessing to resell them. I had my price at 1999.99 in the time that the market was 2500+ because I wanted to get rid of them. He bought two and I guess was going to try to sell them for 3000+ but once the market went down he got mad. He has over 1000+ feedback so I know he has to understand how the market works. maybe he is freaking out and is just desperate. Regardless, I am a verified paypal member, provided a tracking number that requires an adult signature, offered $4000.00 shipping insurance (THAT'S EXPENSIVE), sent in a timely manner (immediately), and sent to a verfied and eligible buyer. I am covered under the general guidelines, but it would be a lot better if paypal could simply tell me "we will cover you" but NO! It really puts a bad taste in my mouth for both ebay and paypal.

Paypal said that if the buyer charges back his card, they will deduct the amount from my account and will hold it during the process. It may take up to 120 days!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!! Paypal sucks.
