Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

All those you listed have already been deeply discounted on sales during this year already, you will see great prices on them all for the holiday sale probably.

Welcome to the Steam thread

I can tell your new here because you haven't experienced a Summer/Holiday sale yet. For the exception of maybe Assassin's Creed games (I don't remember Steam sales on them), all of them will probably be on sale and there will be a nice Bethesda Pack with everything you mentioned above.

Also please watch the daily, midweek and weekend sales. Borderlands GOTY has been $7.50 countless times. It takes literally 10 seconds to load up the steam store page online to see what's there.

If this is your first Steam Holiday sale, then my advice is to brace yourself. There is a very good chance that all the games you just mentioned will have substantial discounts. Another thing worth noting is that you may want to hold off on any "general discount" games at the start of the sale and check the Daily Specials until the end of the sale. This is when you would purchase any games you wanted that did not have a Daily. On my first Steam Holiday Sale, I bought Torchlight at the beginning of the sale for $10, only to see it get reduced down to $5 for one of the Daily Sales.

Yes, yes it can. Easily. Those games are on sale constantly, often for very good prices (under $10)

Steam Pro-tips:

  1. Set maximum per-game prices and minimum discount levels for yourself.
    • I suggest a max of $10 per game ($5 if you're really stingy) and a minimum of 66% off regular price, preferably 75% (Under $5 and 75% off? Instabuy for me). Games will always get cheaper, so there's not much reason to spend over $5 on a game unless you want to play it now.
  2. Look for bundles (publisher packs, series packs, theme packs, etc) to maximize your per-game cost
  3. Watch for group buys (4-packs, etc) to save a bit extra
  4. Don't buy anything that isn't a daily deal until the end of the sale. If it hasn't been a daily deal by the last day, jump in.
Follow these tips, and you'll have a massive Steam library on the cheap in no time.

BTW How are the specs on this system? I decided not to build it because the price of Hard drives have jacked up due to the flood.

Specs
Intel Core i5 quad core(3.00 Ghz)
AMD Radeon HD 6770(It's weak but it'll get the job done for now hopefully)
8 GB Ram
600 Watt PSU

A little over $600 seems good to me. Does newegg tend to offer discounts on custom machines on black Friday? Sorry for bugging you guys so much lol.

Check out this thread to really maximize your PC build. There are even some sample builds listed by price range. Lots of good ideas there, and the folks in there will take a look at your build (if you post it) and offer suggestions a lot of times.

I got an i7-2600/6970 and can't max out some of the newest games.
Get the best video card you possibly can.
I know that you already gave your reason for using Zone Alarm, but the next time your household is re-evaluating antivirus/antimalware I suggest taking a look at Microsoft Security Essentials. Well said and I wholeheartedly agree with the use of MSE. I was really dubious at first but time and again I read nothing but great things about it. It has done an exceptional job of keeping my system clean, being incredibly easy to use, and never ever getting in the way like my old standby AVG Antivirus did.

As for Steam sales, the new Jamestown expansion "Gunpowder, Treason, & Plot" is now available on sale for only $2.00 this weekend (normally $2.99). Anyone try it out yet? I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm just going to buy it before I've even done posting this :p

Oh, and the Jamestown Deluxe Pack offers the original game, expansion, and soundtrack are available on Steam as well for only $10.04. Their site says for the first week only, so I'm thinking only until this Wednesday or Thursday (launch was on November 10th).

In relation to nothing whatsoever, I'd like to just say that I've just beaten VVVVVV, which was recommended by several people on this board. To those people, I love and hate you in equal measure.

What's your motherboard?
Does it have CrossFire support [for running multiple video cards]?

So it turns out I can't play Ghost Master that I got from the Steam Halloween sale. White screen and crash at startup. Common issue.

We're not happy with Zone Alarm, but only recently so. They recently upgraded to a 2012 version, and it blows. My husband is thinking of switching our household to something else, so perhaps then my Steam problems will be minimized.

Not to go too offtopic, but I second what someone said earlier (yesterday) - Microsoft Security Essentials works great, is lightweight, and is FREE. :)

Well, there was a mod mentioned in the Steam forums that got Ghost Master working for me. I swear, the communities there and here make PC gaming a cinch sometimes. :D

Yeah, the Steam forums are great for fixing problems with games. When they got hacked last week and were taken down my first thought was, "Oh man, I hope I don't have any problems with the games from these bundles." It's always the first place I look for a solution and one can usually be found within a couple of minutes.

I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security package. Has all their stuff in one, comes with 3 user licenses for a year and you can get it on Amazon for like $33. I've been using it like 5 years without a single hitch at all. I've got 320 Steam games and while I haven't played them all, I do launch each one once and never had any issues with going into them and making video and other option adjustments at the least so far.

You should definitely visit the PC buying thread here, or this one at NeoGAF and read up on what people are suggesting. The OP in both should give some good advice, but the one here may be out of date.

Either way, some more details on each component would be good. Not all things are equal. For instance, 8GB of RAM doesn't tell the timing or latency, nor the speed. All of those things can make a big difference. Likewise, knowing the brand of PSU is important. Don't buy a no-name PSU because "it's cheap." They're inefficient, and more likely to give you under or overvolts. Corsair, Antec, SeaSonic, etc. are all good names that will give you good efficiency and stable power. You wouldn't want to put a Pinto fuel system in your Ferrari, so don't put a crummy PSU in your custom build. :)
These are great tips, and if you're new to Steam sales, heed them well. It cannot be stressed enough: for the big sales (summer, black friday, Christmas), wait for the daily deal. All (or almost all) games will get a small discount of 25% or 33%, but games selected as a daily deal are usually 50% or 75% off. Wait to see if a game you want is a daily deal before buying. If the last day of the sale comes and it wasn't a daily deal, then buy it.

You'll save yourself a lot of heartache and buyer's remorse this way when something you already bought goes on daily deal and gets cheaper than what you bought it at.

Another good tip for the Steam sales is, when a game you've been waiting on comes up as a Daily Deal for 75% off or better, buy it without delay. Invariably, Steam puts something up at what turns out to be the wrong price point and the deal is stealth-changed. Similarly, if the prices for a single copy and the game's 4-pack don't seem to be at the correct ratio, expect one to be adjusted to reflect the other, be it an increase or further decrease.

This happened with Terraria during the last summer sale. It listed for 45 minutes at 75% off and then got hit to 50%. 50% would have been the deal everyone was glad to have waited for, but knowing that it could have been had for half again of that soured people to it for the rest of the day. Even those who weren't interested in the game seemed annoyed in the end because, in this thread anyway, no one would stop complaining about it.
Today's Deal is The Ball at 66% off ($6.80)
This one is a fun first-person-puzzler. If you enjoyed Portal, then there's a good chance you'll like The Ball. The writing isn't witty like Portal, but some of the puzzles they've come up with are quite interesting.

Some background on the game - the main guy behind it was probably the best custom Unreal/Unreal Tournament level designer on the scene (so the levels, unsurprisingly, look amazing). He went on to do quite a bit of professional work before founding a studio, and this is their first game.

Another reason why you might like it if you like Portal is that it was part of the Portal 2 ARG and they've got a positively amazing Portal-themed level as a bonus. You've also got leaderboards and a survival mode once you're done with the campaign.

Got it for $2.49 during that sale. Even though I've barely played it, I feel like I've robbed a bank for getting in on that deal. ;)

Likewise. I got in right away, and I felt guilty when it went up in price just afterward. Not because I underpaid, but for the other CAGs wishing they'd been able to get in on the initial price. Should've done a 4-pack, apparently...
It's still annoying though considering this is a Steam cloud game and by using a different version you're losing out on that feature.

I know that you already gave your reason for using Zone Alarm, but the next time your household is re-evaluating antivirus/antimalware I suggest taking a look at Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, lightweight, and I've never heard anyone make the kind of complaints that they do with products from third party companies.
I use MSE too, and I really like it. It's missing a few features that the pay-fer programs have, but they are features I generally am not interested in. For malware protection, it is best-of-breed.

However, there was one Steam game I played that had a problem with MSE. I can't remember which one, though. But the workaround was simple - I just excluded the game's folder from protection in MSE. No fuss, no muss.

Found an old thread from April which explained a workaround to get Fate of the World working with Zone Alarm. Had to go somewhere special to disabled the Zone Alarm Toolbar to get the game running. Works now though!

Oh and for those who wondered. The Ball has been $5 as a Daily Deal in the past. So if you are a cheap ass, The Ball has been lower priced on sale (which I got my copy at $5).

At this point in the year i think its a bit silly to buy any steam deal unless its something youre going to play right away.

Yeah, true.

I wanted The Ball but decided to wait 11 days and see what happens with the Thanksgiving sale.

I feel the same way. Gabe's public apology on 11/10 really makes me think this year's BF sale is going to be great. Here's hoping, anyway.

I'm thinking about using my SR3 money for something on Steam... will they have great holiday deals these next few months?

You're asking that in all seriousness, like we haven't been discussing it for the last few pages? :p
This happened with Terraria during the last summer sale. It listed for 45 minutes at 75% off and then got hit to 50%. 50% would have been the deal everyone was glad to have waited for, but knowing that it could have been had for half again of that soured people to it for the rest of the day. Even those who weren't interested in the game seemed annoyed in the end because, in this thread anyway, no one would stop complaining about it.
they did the same thing with DoW: Retribution. They had it at 75% off for 7.49, but then they bumped it back up. Sometimes, you just gotta jump.

Can anyone verify whether the Steam versions of Super Street Fighter IV and Virtua Tennis are GFWL? Their store pages don't mention it, but they're listed as GFWL titles on Wikipedia.

My personal wish list for the upcoming sales is:

Sonic Generations at $15 or lower
Payday The Heist $5
Dungeon Defenders $5
New Vegas DLC $2.50 a piece
Civ 5 DLC 75% off
Fear 3 $10 or less
Orcs Must Die DLC 75% off

I wouldn't mind a deal on Saint's Row 3 as well but that is so new that I doubt we will see anything worthwhile until the Holiday sale. LOTR War in the North @ 75% off would be nice as well but unlikely.

SSF4AE is a GFWL but it uses the new method so there are no limits on it's key.

SSFIVAE is indeed a GFWL title. It does have LIVE achievements. Sadly though they didn't implement cross platform play. :C Twas dissapointing for me after seeing Calamity Trigger (BlazBlue) implement it just fine.

The only realistic discount I see on that list is the Fallout: NV DLC lol, and maybe the Civ V DLC, but I highly doubt it. =P
I lol'ed at the daily today. Alpha Protocol is 66% off ($6.80).

For those who aren't privy, AP was $2 during the Sega sale.

So how much do you guys plan on spending on Steam during the next sale? I'm going to set myself at a reasonable max of $50. For the holiday sale, my max is whatever's left over from the previous sale plus $75. :D
