Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Magicka is incredibly buggy. It's still a wonderful game. Nothing else like it out there, and it's super cheap.
I know it had a buggy launch since they didn't know it was going to be released when it was, but they've done a lot of updating, and they seemed to be pretty well on the ball with fixing stuff once it was recognized. You've got to remember that this fantastic game was made by a small group (7) of guys. They aren't perfect, but they really do seem to care about the game.

I haven't encountered any issues yet. It's a really fun game, especially with friends. It's worth just about any price they've asked for it, but $2.50 is an absolute steal.

I'm inclined not to like Magicka but damn they know how to throw a party. It's a dumb, mindless little game that wears out it's welcome but when they cut loose and have a good raucous boss fight they know how to make it a party.

Just a shame it took them THIS long to do level select and make one player play viable.

SR3 is definitely Steamworks so it seems bizarre to put it on Origin. I do not recommend buying it on any service though. Not especially bad but mediocre in every way, especially compared to SR2. Good PC port though. Not a waste of time but definitely a disappointment.

I've heard nothing but good things about SR3. It has an 85 metacritic and 8.5 user score which is higher than SR2 scored and in a much more hostile busy market.

Not sure what you are expecting but I think it is safer to just say it's not your cup of tea than it is mediocre in every way.

Agreed, I already logged 20 hours on it and loved every bit.

I can't get Magicka to run well on my computer (a 3 year old laptop). It runs incredibly slow and the menu wasn't responding when I tried to change the graphic options. Last thing I need is another game on Steam I'm not going to play.

SR3 is great but has performance issues for many people. When driving or flying the frame rate will drop by 50% and changing video settings has no impact on performance. This doesn't seem to affect everyone though.

I find Saint's Row 3 to be a great big box of awesome. It's not a perfect game, but Volition really went out of its way to give you the ability to play your own way. It's ridiculous, it's over the top, and it's just plain fun.
FYI Dungeon Defenders is $7.50 on. Amazon and activates on steam. May be worth looking into.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005VFHOOE/
I bought it at launch in a 4 pack. Good game, easily worth at least $10.

It's a little light on story, but the gameplay's solid and the team aspects of the game encourage class specialization. Quite a bit of fun DLC is coming out as well and if you had the game as the DLC was released, it's free to you.

Dungeon Defenders is great. There's a ton of content in the game. I think it's worth $7.50 for sure. They sold a ton of copies pretty quickly and opened it up for modders. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a game that sticks around for a few years.

I see Magicka for the colelction is now $3.12.. wasn't there a deluxe version us yesterday for $6 something? What happened to that one, can't find it in search.. and what is missing in this version? Looks like it has all the DLC but there must be some difference?

EDIT: Crap.. back up to $6. Oh well, I bought it. Should have pulled the trigger when it was lower, I guess that was a mistake on their part.

I hate the 66% off discount in general because it's just a matter of time until it hits 75% off.

I think this applies to every game.

Magicka is surprisingly demanding of hardware.

I didn't find Magicka ran well on my PC when I tried the demo. I also didn't like how the 360 controller worked with the game. My husband tried with KBM and didn't like it either.

If you say so, but I've had nothing but whole forums of people who loved SR2 ranging from lukewarm to disappointed on SR3, so you're one of the few people I've heard actually defending it outside those reviews.

And, yeah, I AM somewhat aware of those reviews. They are what snookered me into dropping cash for it in the first place.

The new city is smaller than a thumbtack. There are no interiors at all, nothing like the mall, the caves, the airport, the jail of SR2. The city is just boring and lifeless. There are no NPC flown planes or controlled boats. The Evil Cars, Infinite Car Mass, and Low Gravity cheats were pulled from the game for paid DLC (Do not listen to anyone who says the DLC can be unlocked in game. That's a lie. Some cheats ARE COMPLETELY removed for DLC.). Those were staples of the SR2 dicking around. There is no way to replay missions. The plot is an awkwardly paced, unsatisfying mess. The missions themselves barely approach the quality of other sandbox games, much less SR2, even when they cut loose with maximum wackiness they forget to make it fun. Whored Mode is a tedious joke. The list of stuff they cut from SR2 dwarfs what they actually kept. The one fun Activity, Genki's SERC, is a cruel joke in that it reminds you how much fun you COULD be having when you're playing this game. Most of the fun activities from SR2 were cut, though all the series standbys remain. Hell, I had more fun in one round of FUZZ than I did in most of SR3.

The game looks nicer, it plays pretty dang well on PC, and the shooting feels a little bit weightier, as do the character models rather than feeling like a mannequin playground as SR2 did. The Deckers lieutenant is probably one of the coolest third person shooter enemies I've seen in memory.

It wasn't just "not my cup of tea." There were serious problems with the game. It had some good bits but it surely was not worth my money or time.

Does anyone know how to tell in Steam what DLC you have? Thinking of picking up missing Magicka DLC. I got the complete pack in the summer sale. Well it was "complete" then...

Right click the game and hit View Downloadable Content.

You sometimes have to play smarter than the system if you're dealing with games like Oblivion that aren't conventional with the DLC but anything that was birthed in Steamworks and milks it for money like Magicka surely does will be clear to you.

Remember though, most of those DLCs are just versus maps and costumes. Not really worth it usually.
There are no NPC flown planes or controlled boats.

Not to nitpick, but there are most definitely NPC boats... I just did an awesome chase through the waterways with the police in hot pursuit in boats, watercraft, and helicopter.

Also, a lot of what you say seems to fall into the fan-of-the-previous-game syndrome, in which you lament things that the other game had but this one does not. It doesn't really describe what keeps the game from being "fun" for you. The two games can, in fact, exist simultaneously and liking one better does not automatically make the other bad. You may want to go into greater detail about what it is you dislike if you're going to offer a mini negative review and suggest people don't buy it. Just sayin'

I can't go into any more detail. The differences between the two make for great concrete bullet points, but how the hell do I say the missions are just boring, compared to the previous, compared to other sandbox games, and compared to other shooters, in more words than that? You could lock me in a room and ask me to explain what was wrong in Ao2:TFD all damn day but I'd never give you more words than crappy levels. Sorry.

Thank you for this, I'll be on the lookout for what you're talking about when I play the game, deeply appreciate your insights.

It's not offensively bad. It will suffice for a dumb way to while a few hours away in sandbox fashion. But at least get it on the cheap, is all I'm saying. Had I paid $20 I'd probably still be disappointed but less offended.

Actually he did a pretty good job of telling us what made it not "fun" for him. It's not a case of "fan-of-the-previous-game syndrome", it's wanting them to have built on their previous accomplishments and add more, not take some out and leave some in... Seems quite silly to me that they would remove features in SR3 that people liked in SR2.

Without getting into an infinite quote war, I respectfully disagree. Most of the post talked about what the game did not have when compared with the previous. He didn't really make a case for why not having those things was bad other than the implication that more is better.

But to each his own and I appreciate dissenting opinions. I am just the curious sort and like to know "why".

A second recommendation for Dungeon Defenders.

The story is... kinda there for the sake of having a structure, and nothing else really. The charm of the game is in its replayability, it has 13-14 "maps" which form the basis of the story mode, and you'll beat them all on the easiest setup and think "Yeah, that was kinda fun". Then you'll try them on harder settings (Easy -> Normal -> Hard -> Insane) and realise that maybe just maybe you're not the overall conqueror you think you are. It can get brutally, and hilariously overawing.

You level up your characters much like you would on an MMO (I spent 3½ years in WoW so it's second nature to me!) by killing monsters and completing maps on increasing difficulties. If repetition of something doesn't float your boat, you probably won't find much in DD to hold your interest. I love "building" characters, planning out how I'll develop them and so on, but I know others hate stuff like this.

Where the game shines is playing with friends (I've had minimal success with random groups). Get 1-3 friends and the maps scale upwards to make sure that you're not simply outnumbering the monsters.

It oozes charm and cheek, some of the weapons are just plain crazy (I have a sword that looks suspiciously lightsaberish, and I met a huntress with a gun that looked like a giant chicken).

For £9.99, or whatever that is in Johnny Foreigner money, I think it's excellent value. But then again, it appeals to me in particular. I know other friends who are turned off by the same exact reason that I love it in the first place.

I'm at 60+ hours and counting, only King's Bounty: Armored Princess has more hours from me on my Steam library :)

Dungeon Defenders is a nice concept but the balance is absolutely horrible. The game is essentially still in beta. The good news is that the developers patch it every other day. The bad news it that... the developers patch it every other day. Right now it's way too grindy and tedious to be enjoyable.

Thanks for the head's up on that one (keep those Steamworks games on Amazon coming)! I haven't played but from what I've read on the forums it seems like the community is dying out pretty fast.

Really fun reverse tower defense. Got it on the last Summer Sale for 4.99. I think this is the lowest price it's been by itself, but it was on a pack with four other TD games some time ago for 4.99.

I had a lot of fun with it. Interesting twist on tower defense (if you're into that sort of game). There's a lot of restarting involved, but their are very frequent checkpoints. The presentation is very good for an indie title. I'd say it's worth it at this price, but a thousand other CAGs will tell you to wait.

The arguing over this is old and I probably shouldn't feed the fire. I won't be engaging in the topic after this. If a mod is around, I wont take offense if the post is removed.

All I was trying to do is point out that there are differing opinions on this game and from everywhere I see there is both a positive critical AND user response. It's very one sided to say a game is awful when you didn't enjoy it knowing there is a large community who does. If you had said you didn't like the game this wouldn't have been an issue, but you went out of your way to land blast it revive it and then kill it again for good measure. Even now it seems you are implying that all the reviews were just trying to dupe people into buying an inferior game.

Not every game is made for everyone. I'd be burnt at the gamer stake if I went into how I loathe modern Mario and Zelda games. I am not going to go so far and say that my experience with them is absolute and no one could possibly enjoy those games. I haven't played an SR game, so maybe I'd be with you but you can't just pretend that the many who enjoy SR3 and would not agree with your thoughts don't exist and their opinion isn't valid.

From advice in this thread, I've been considering The Witcher 2 as a gift for my husband. I'm hoping that or the first game get really discounted during the upcoming sales so I can buy it for him.

Count on 50% or more on both. ;)

Witcher 1 goes on the cheap pretty often. I imagine that during the upcoming Thanksgiving and/or Winter sale it'll be $5-10.

$5 is usually the sale price, if i recall.

By the way, regardless of my feelings on the matter of SR3, Volition has a lousy track record on mission pack DLCs. SR2 and RFG both had really boring overpriced DLC offerings. So, when you are looking at the season pass DLC, I recommend you think long and hard as to whether you would accept subpar mission packs for your money.

Not trying to steer you away but I just want to warn you all that there is no reason to expect the DLC missions to be good.

Does anyone know if there is a better deal than Steam for Batman Arkham City on PC?

Just finished Arkham Asylum on PC and want the new one for all the graphic eye candy.
The Witcher 2 will definitely be on sale at Steam during either the Black Friday or Holiday sale. The exclusive Steam Achievements and usual Steam conveniences are reason enough to hold out till then IMO.
My husband and I are are bent on using Steam, so I'm looking forward to a sale price on these games. He seems to want to play the first Witcher before the second.
