Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I've looked through most of the past Steam holiday sales and most of them are just indie or casual games... hardly any popular big titles.

Can I have some of the crack you are smoking? Just kidding. There are plenty of big popular titles, and lots of indie stuff too. Maybe you just checked it out on the wrong day?

Might want to take the blindfold off before you look.

Either that or they hit their head and fell unconscious thus missing the all the holiday sales and when they woke up they still thought the holiday says were going on, but in reality it was some indie weekend deal.
Just because they're not mind-readers doesn't make it a great bundle.
I think you are reading into my post. I didn't say it wasn't a good bundle. I just said that I owned everything in the pack. I get excited at the Humble bundles because they often introduce me to new titles or titles I've had my eye on. Can a little kid not be disappointed when he gets a happy mean with the same toy he already had even if he loved that toy?

His statement is also just 100% wrong. They put sales on almost every single game. Even big new titles. I bet even Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim have some type of sale, be it 30-35 bucks or so.

Whoa, those are some pretty big islands in the sky buddy. There's no way Skyrim and MW3 are going to be $30-$35 (on Steam anyway).

Perhaps he only plays halo and gears of war. In which case he would be right. They only have sales on indie games.

Cave Story+ is out and 15% off ($8.49)

It has new play modes and graphics. It has controller support which I don't think the original does, although xpadder and other utilities work fine. They also promise future content on Steam.

Of course you can get the original game for free from the dev's website and Desura. I don't think the new content is worth $8.50 if you've already played the game unless you want to send some money toward the developer.

edit: fixed link. not sure what happened there.

Broken link, use this

Cave Story+ you say?

Hm. As someone who was planning to grab a physical copy of Cave Story on the 3DS at such a time that it can be had at a discount, which would be the better version to own? I've been wanting to play this for a while now and have the original version's installation on my computer somewhere, but I'd happily pay for the experience.

Oh, and as a warning to those looking to the next Indie Royale Bundle, not only has it been pushed back to an unknown start time "next week," but from the wording of their Tweets, at least one of the games will not have a Steam key.
Is Aquria good? It reminds me of Ecco, but with boobs and magic.
I thought it was a quality title. It reminded me of Metroid or Castlevania, but underwater. I'd definitely recommend it.
As much as I adore Steam, there is one game genre I love that I don't find much of on Steam. The turn-based RPG. Classic style, you know.

I played the crap out of Avadon, and I've played Winter Voices. I've got my eye on Eschalon, which appears to be turn-based.

Any other recommendations? Not interested in The Last Remnant.
Have you tried some of the classics, like Baldur's Gate (1 and 2) and Fallout (1 and 2)?

Fallout 1 and 2 are available on Steam, and they are much-adored classics of the turn-based variety. You can even turn the turn-based on and off to your liking, IIRC.

Baldur's Gate I and II are on GOG.com, and I know you're Steam-first, but I think if you took a look at GOG and their mission statement, you'd quickly fall in adore with them, too. They have tons of classic RPGs, and I can't think of a company that does better fan service than GOG. You really feel like a first-class customer there.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are both extremely good games. I remember so much about them, 13 years later.

Fallout 1 and 2 are also on GOG, and cheaper than Steam, but they all go on sale on both services, frequently.

Last thing - this Anthology of Bioware games was recently released: Baldur's Gate 1/2, Icewind Dale 1/2, Placescape Torment, and ToEE, for $20. That's the best deal of all, but then, you have to deal with physical media, no download service. Still, it's DRM-free, and that's worth something.
You should get the Geneforge Saga. Five games for 20 bucks. It's by the same guy as Avadon. Few of the games are quite old though so you might need to brace yourself for a bit more rough edges than Avadon had.
I was surprised to see the Geneforge Saga on Steam. They must have done well with Avadon to put more effort into Steam-ifying a series.

While I'm interested, the fact that the Geneforge Saga looks nearly exactly like Avadon is a bit of let down. I expect some progression over time. Considering I'm looking at about 10 years of games, I expect far more progression than what I'm seeing with this set.

Still, I can see me going for the set at some point, but not for more than $5, I think. Avadon got really repetitive, and these games seem to promise more of the same.

Hm, very interested in Cave Story. Controller support is a major win.

Pretty sure they're referring to Really Big Sky, which is not a Steam game. Which makes me less interested in the Bundle (also not interested in Really Big Sky anyway). Hence why I haven't preordered the bundle.
I thought it was a quality title. It reminded me of Metroid or Castlevania, but underwater. I'd definitely recommend it.
Aquaria is a tough cookie. I recently played it, got to the final area, and quit. The game is big on exploration, wandering here and there without much guidance as to where you should be going. It can be very overwhelming at times and save points should be far more liberal.

Still, it's a mesmerizing experience. You want to play for more than an hour, as the game is far more than exploring a gentle, blue ocean. You have a variety of forms that you can switch into, each with different abilities. You can shoot fire in one form, devour smaller creatures with another, illuminate dark places with one, and so on.

The game is big, and there are tons of collectibles. It's a water platformer, basically, with none of that running out of air and dying business. Music is fantastic. It's notable that I say this, as I play most games with the sound off. (I'm hearing impaired, btw. Cochlear implant in one ear and hearing aid in the other.)

But yeah, I liked Aquaria. I wouldn't recommend it at retail, but with all the other games in that Bundle? Yes, get it.

Wow that's really fuck lame... No wonder why they did a pre-order...

Let's pre-order a bundle where we don't know wtf it has in it! Even better yet, 1 or more of them aren't Steam titles! Yay!

In terms of numbers, Indie Royale is like the independent party in Congress. Humble Bundle is like Republicans + Democrats combined.

What'll be interesting is if there's a really dynamite title in it that justifies the higher start price and the preorder bundles.

But as I'm not interested in the "really big" (Really Big Sky) part of the bundle, my interest is already dimmed.
I can't download any games on Steam right now - anyone else having the same problems? Steam chat is down also.

(Could it be, a major sale is starting?)
I've been having trouble redeeming my Steam keys from the Introversion Humble Bundle - "Steam server is unavailable."

Also: I'm seriously considering Cave Story+ (never played it since I had a Mac for the longest time) to add to my growing collection of games on my macbook... gonna need 'em for a long family trip ahead lol.
I can't download any games on Steam right now - anyone else having the same problems? Steam chat is down also.

Nope, just normal maintenance.

We'll be doing another update of some of the Steam servers Tuesday November 22th, 2011 around 16:30 PST (GMT-8). Chat, game lobbies, and the community web site will be affected. Content downloads and game play should not be affected. Downtime is expected to be short.
Hopefully these upgrades will keep the site running smoothly through the holiday sales.

Since the Royale promotions are partly (or completely) backed by Desura I expect they might be Desura exclusive in the future while Humble trends towards Steam. I don't believe you get Desura keys with the Introversion bundle although as I didn't buy it I don't know 100% -- I just don't see it mentioned like Steam keys are.

I actually think if they went completely Desura, no one would buy them. I mean I am fine not getting a Steam key for a game if it's not on Steam but if they were offering Steam keys for games in the past and then don't I think they would lose a lot of business.

Although Humble Bundle also has non Steam games but nothing for Desura.

None of Introversion's games are on Desura. There was no Desura key for the last one either, but I heard that if you contacted them they'd supply one for the one or two games from that bundle that are on Desura. At this point it's hard to tell if the Desura keys for Humble Bundles are going away because of Indie Royale or if it just has to do with the recent games selections.
So what are people hoping goes on sale tomorrow? (since I believe it started on Wed last year)
Skyrim

Batman: Arkham City
Saints Row: The Third
LA Noire: The Complete Edition
Bastion
Hard Reset
AC: Revelations
COD games - MW2, MW3, Black Ops, and World at War
Homefront
Alice: Madness Returns

DIRT 3
Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road DLC
Avadon: The Black Fortress

I want to see Fallout New Vegas and the DLCs and maybe an indie gem I haven't heard of.

I am looking to pick up the Deus Ex DLC and the last to New Vegas dlc's for cheap if I can. Might hold off on regular game purchases til next month unless a deal really jumps out at me.

So this isn't good. Skyrim's been in the "Syncing..." phase forever in my library, so I tried to close (and restart) Steam. It pops up a window that says "Finishing Steam Cloud sync..." and is just sitting there. I've just read that someone else had their saves wiped out by this same occurrence during this maintenance, so now I'm afraid to just exit the program. And I can't see what in my library uses Cloud Saves since it won't let me reopen Steam (since it's shutting down.) Now I'm just stuck in limbo, unsure what to do. Why is there no way to simply abort the sync?

Sometimes it seems like all their effort goes into making deals and not making software that isn't duct taped together. It seems unfathomable that "delete a file" or "delete everything but a few folders" are serious resolutions to the problems a piece of software has.

Origin may be late to the party and missing half the features, but I also haven't had to perform manual maintenance on it or (potentially) lost all my saves.

EDIT: Forced it to exit and it looks like nothing got wiped, but I'm really leery about cloud syncing now.
Are you talking about the Voxeltron Bundle? I'd like more information on the Desura keys if you could link me to where you heard it, I've been getting kind of interested in the service.

Portal 2 and Trine 2 are the only things on my wishlist I hope to get sales on.

I'll just see whats cheap as the sales come and purchase accordingly. I still haven't beaten 3/4 of the games I got from last year's sale.

I am betting on a Thanksgiving sale like last year as well.

I'd like Hard Reset, Dead Island, Witcher 2, FEAR 3, Dungeon Siege 3, Batman AC, Fallout NV, Saints Row The Third, Warhammer 40K Space Marine, Dungeon Defenders, Shank, Orcs Must Die, Bastion, Darkspore, Game of Thrones, a few others and it'd be nifty to find some dirt cheap indie title that surprises me that I've never heard of.

I'd also like to see a couple gifts come into play during the sale that I could snag for Christmas presents. I don't know when they did it or if you always could, but I saw that you can "assign" a gift to be saved for later, like stowing a license to gift down the road, as an option. It's perfect for being months away from a birthday or the holidays and wanting to sit on it, but still snag it up when it's at Steam's ungodly discounted price on some random sale. Just discovered that option the other day.

Trine 2 hasn't even been released yet.

Doesn't mean it can't go on sale... It just means that it won't...

My wishlist. the following will likely inspire me to purchase if they get below $5:

Puzzle Agent 2 (I played the first with my kids, need to play the 2nd!)
Assassin's Creed 1
GTA IV Episodes
Payday the Heist
Limbo

Looking for $3.50 or less on these, maybe not this sale but next:
The Ball (I think this is ripe for a $2.50 tag!)
Bastion
From Dust

These might get a buy if they get down to $7.50
DAO:UE
The Witcher 2

Probably at $20:
Blood Island - a friend owes me a copy and we agreed to wait until it hits $20.

And I would definitely get some of the Civ 5 DLC if it's 75% off.Really hoping for a package deal on Civ 5 that would bring all the DLC in for about $12.50.

Plus, I love scooping up their $0.99 and $1.25 specials. I just like to see what's there and I'll always get little indie or puzzle games at this price just to have something new.

Yes these are extreme expectations, but my back catalog is stacked and I'm tired of paying even $10 for a game and then seeing it for $5 a couple months later. :wall: You know what I mean, I know you do.
