Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Exactly.
Certain things work best w/ certain kind of games, for me.

For example, I play platforming-heavy games like POP series and AC series w/ gamepad.
And I especially play fighters like Street Fighter 4 PC w/ a 360 gamepad.
I normally play racers and sports games w/ a gamepad.

FPS - KB/mouse all the way for me, normally.
What's "POP"? I can't place this acronym.

Microsoft entertained the idea of letting Xbox players face off against PC gamers, but found that those that used controllers were at a great disadvantage. A scientific study it is not, but still...

As others have said, certain games lend themselves towards mouse/keyboard while others are played better with controllers. I grew up as a console/arcade gamer, but for FPS & RTS games - those are the two genres that I'd take a mouse and keyboard any day of the week.

I remember when I first started playing multiplayer online in college, Quake 1, I used keyboard and... that's it. Once I got over my resistance and saw how much better everyone else's scores were with k+m, I tried it, learned it, and pwnt.
True PC gamers use the mouse and keyboard, that's just what you're supposed to use, it's the natural input medium.
Yes, keyboards and mouses have been found in nature for millenia. Darwin actually used Nature's keyboard & mouse to show that we had evolved specifically to use our left hand to push buttons, and our right hand to move an object that relates to a point on... err... Nature's screen.

These unnatural joypads are an abomination against Nature and all of her beauteous QWERTY glory.

Not really against nature, but more against games that require twitch-like reflexes. ;)

No mods of great note, as far as I've seen. If you've got friends to play it with, it's great to pick up again. Going solo through the story again is not very fulfilling though.
Hey, quick steam related question.

A guy is offering me a used copy of Civ 5 for $11. If I buy it, will I be able to activate it on steam?
An activation on Steam is required to play, so if he has installed the game at all then he has already used the activation, rendering the disk useless for resale.

The only one I've tried is 3rd person mode, that's pretty cool. I repurchased on PC just to get smoother performance (PS3 version is choppy) and better graphics. The DLC is very good.

whaaaa? I always thought that that game being an fps was a little bit of a waste of a cool art style. definitely going to track down that mod - would really change the feel of the game if it's well done.
Downloading it now, was just curious if anyone had played it before :D
I just played the demo for about half an hour and it was decent. Hack and slash with some political stuff thrown in. Honestly the political stuff was a little more interesting than the hack an slash. Still, not horrible.

The question is, will buying Depths of Peril convince Steam to allow Soldak to put Din's Curse on Steam? I mean, that's the Soldak game people are waiting for on Steam.

It seems to throw off the crosshair accuracy a little bit but I found that if I didn't zoom in/iron sights that it stayed pretty accurate. All it is is a line in a config file that you enter, it was somewhat programmed into the game already.

There are some interesting mods out there and user created content worth looking into. I suggest checking the Borderlands wiki for more information on modding the game and some recommended cool mods. :D

I really hope you see this, sorry about the late response lol. Borderlands is definitely worth $7.50 to me, but it really depends on your interest in games. If you want an RPG with a crapload of different weapons, tons of quests and instance-like areas to explore, then this is your game.

The GOTY offers up the 4 DLCs for the game, the first seems like story of its own, playing like the main story does, the second has arena areas that you can firefight waves of baddies with your friends or solo. The third and fourth add to the main story and increase the level cap, haven't gotten to them yet but The game and the first 2 DLCs alone are easily worth $15 to me, and all of the DLCs alone are definitely worth $7.50 (TONS of added content).

You may want to look into the Advanced Settings Tool, a nice little addon to the game that allows you to tweak some of the setting that the game doesn't allow you to tweak by itself. I'd look into it, it really does add some nice touches that were overlooked by the devs.

Also, be wary of the large amount of people who use "modding" to acquire ridiculously overpowered guns by tweaking their stats as well as tweaking their characters' stats. I'd avoid multiplayer or play with people you know have not exploited this, otherwise you risk them ruining the game for you.

Anyway, hope you see this, and I hope it helps! :)

These changes can also easily be made in Notepad or any text editor by replacing a few values here and there.

I tried the Depths of Peril demo and it seems pretty fun. It's like Diablo but you also have to negotiate with neighboring tribes. If it had multiplayer or was a little cheaper, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat, but the good news is that it should run on most laptops if you're looking for a fun game with low system requirements.

See, to each his own, I think. I really enjoyed Borderlands in singleplayer mode. Multiplayer was very frustrating to me because I'm the kind of person that likes to compare loot drops to my own. I also like to take my time through an area and really attack it strategically. Other than a few select friends I've played with, multiplayer always seemed to devolve into a mad race to the next red chest and spamming pickup on anything orange or even remotely interesting.

Borderlands in singleplayer is a repetitive killing spree with average loot. In my opinion, the best way to play that game is with people you know who'll share loot, which by the way gets better as more people play, and help you attack bosses with strategies when you're under-leveled. I tried playing it by myself and it was just tiring; could only manage to play for maybe an hour at a time compared to near full days in multiplayer lol.
For a single player game, I wouldn't spend more than $2. I'm just a crazy cheapass, though. :S

Lol holy fuck man. Any single player game? XD
If it's on Steam and I only sort of want the game, then yes- I can wait till it's cheaper than a burger lol. I waited so many years for Alpha Protocol to hit my range and I thought that game looked pretty awesome when it first came out. I just prefer multiplayer/cooperative games over singleplayer. I have bought a few games slightly more expensive than $2, though, but I really wanted them at the time like Elder Scrolls III and IV. I spent around 5$ apiece for those two.

Sometimes I don't even pay with money. I trade Team Fortress 2 items for the games I want. So $0 spent.

I've been doing this for the past few months, slowly dwindling away all my items. I've been so pumped about doing this, it's ridiculous.

So essentially you "work" for TF2 items and spend those hard-earned items on games. ;) May I ask what trades you've made? Really curious what it takes in TF2 items to get a game, I'd like to know the "exchange rate", if you will. :) Feel free to PM me if you don't wanna post it here.

Actually I stopped playing TF2 when it went free to play (moved on to other games, mostly), but when I quite I had plenty of items that were worth a decent amount (many of which I got for merely owning a game on steam), the biggest of which was the Max's Severed Head hat, which I traded for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Limbo, and Terraria. I've also traded for Borderlands GOTY (the last time it was on sale), Binding of Isaac, Cthulhu Saves the World. What I've been doing is selling my items for in game metal by using a spreedsheet to convert values like this one: http://billsandbuds.com/, which each bit of refined metal is worth about a dollar. I've got about $15 bucks worth of items left, and once their gone I'll probably never touch the game again, unless I keep getting TF2 items for buying games, in which case I'll sell those off.

For those who have bought the Indie Royale Launch Bundle, they've added DLC for A.R.E.S. in the past hour.

From their Twitter: "Just added a special Berzerker Suit DLC bonus for A.R.E.S - massive thanks to @x10interactive grab it from http://www.indieroyale.com"

Love when they do that lol... Nothing better than finding out you've gotten free stuff. Unless it's a free disease... In that case I'd pass.

The Berserker Suit was also one of the free Summer DLC ticket items, so if you had a passing interest in the game, you may already own it.

Hm, it seems I really suck at King's Bounty and, likely, HoMM. I'm just in the first place, the Hall of Trials, and I only have one troop unit left for the final encounter. I don't see how to get more troops, but I'm thinking that mine shouldn't have died... :(

Edit: Started the game over and easily destroyed the dragon and all enemies, now that I knew what I was doing and had a fair idea of how combat worked. The game seems like it'll be great with lots of charm and terrific text.

Yeah, I know - loot's better, monsters are more powerful. You're really missing out on a part of the game if you don't experience the multiplayer portion and having the right group of people is a big part of that. I acknowledge its importance and, yet, I personally enjoyed the singleplayer experience more. It's just... different. You can become immersed in the story, play areas tactically and deliberately, and enjoy browsing all of the loot. If those things aren't as important then, like you, multiplayer makes the game shine brightest.

It's nice that there are two distinct ways to play the game, but I can't help but think that some of those are issues with game design and I hope that Gearbox takes a close look at alleviating some of them with Borderlands 2. For instance, a greater penalty for wandering away from the group to cut down on some of the chest-rushing (take a cue from L4D, perhaps). There needs to be an easier way to view and lay claim to loot best suited to your build. It's often all but impossible to follow along with goals and storyline if you aren't perfectly in synch with the host who controls the progression.
