Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

If you put it in context, it makes more sense - it's almost half the price of most of the popular Gamefly deals. For another fiver and change, you can get good and recent games, and can trade them away again if you choose to. They start again tomorrow, btw.
Hey, quick steam related question.

A guy is offering me a used copy of Civ 5 for $11. If I buy it, will I be able to activate it on steam?
Can't move steam games between accounts. He's probably got a steam account with the one game attached to it, and is trying to sell you that account.

I wouldn't do this; The game has been
Actually I stopped playing TF2 when it went free to play (moved on to other games, mostly), but when I quite I had plenty of items that were worth a decent amount (many of which I got for merely owning a game on steam), the biggest of which was the Max's Severed Head hat, which I traded for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Limbo, and Terraria. I've also traded for Borderlands GOTY (the last time it was on sale), Binding of Isaac, Cthulhu Saves the World. What I've been doing is selling my items for in game metal by using a spreedsheet to convert values like this one: http://billsandbuds.com/, which each bit of refined metal is worth about a dollar. I've got about $15 bucks worth of items left, and once their gone I'll probably never touch the game again, unless I keep getting TF2 items for buying games, in which case I'll sell those off.
Brilliant. I am definitely going to look into this as a way to get rid of my 12 Direct Hits and my 15 huntsmen.
There needs to be an easier way to view and lay claim to loot best suited to your build. It's often all but impossible to follow along with goals and storyline if you aren't perfectly in synch with the host who controls the progression.
Good discussion here about Borderlands. The best way to implement what you suggest, hal, would be to do what Diablo 3 is doing, and that's distinct loot drops for each person. Everyone will see different loot drops, so you can finish your melee as a group, and then spend 10 seconds picking everything up, without worrying about who gets what. It makes such good sense, I don't know why it hasn't been done before.

I played Borderlands alone and it was ... lonely. Did the whole thing. I enjoyed it, but the best parts I remember was the few times that friends hopped in for a couple of hours to play with me, lol. The only problem is that (IIRC) only one person is advancing their storyline at a time when you play MP. Everyone else is getting loot and XP, but not checking off quests. (Is that right?)

Everyone checks off quests when playing multiplayer, however, which quests are available are completely up to the host. If the host hasn't unlocked a quest that others have, they can't play it together. If the host has already completed a quest other haven't, that can't play it together. For me, I think it's best to dedicate a single character for a group, so all the quests stay neat and tidy. That's what me and my roommate do, anyway.

I'm not much of a multiplayer fan, but a big reason I stay offline with Borderlands is I collect all the loot I come across for selling purposes and take forever comparing stuff and figuring out what to keep. I don't think anyone would put up with that. Plus I don't want to share if anything good shows up. Maybe I should loosen up and just try to have fun, that sounds like a good idea but I doubt I'll do it.
Bioshock has lots of problems with Windows 7/Vista.
I take back what I said earlier about not running into any problems with Bioshock on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 now that I've played it a bit farther.

There's an area of the game about halfway through where there's a lot of green fog in the air. The thing is there's geometrically shaped chunks missing from the fog in certain areas. Also, in some very rare instances some of the NPC's shadows are being cast through walls. The issue with the fog also seems linked to how the game handles shadows.

I'm running the game on a Radeon HD. Has anyone else encountered these problems?

anyone buying the 4 pack of borderlands GOTY? I'd like to get one if you are or if you have one to sell.

Thanks.

Steam tech question!

When you something with expansions and tell it to download...I'll use FEAR 1 as an example...Steam displays it as downloading 3 separate games, splitting your bandwidth. All three show the total (17+GB), and if you pause the expansions and let the main game download, then unpause, the total downloaded for the expansions jumps back up to the current total for the main game.

So my question is...is it actually downloading the whole thing three separate times? Or just displaying it confusingly? I have the expansions paused, just in case...

Here's another question... Does Steam use some sort of compression when transfering? I'll sometimes see the bit rate go above what my ISP supports, and also the time remaining is usually too fast...

Depends on the download. Often times games will act as if you have to download seperately but if you install one all of them act as if they are installed (ie Company of Heroes).

Standard download compression is used. I believe LZOP. (Edit: I thought this was the case but I'm not finding any sources and the ones I do find are stating the opposite so who knows).

There's a new Humble Bundle. It's currently only for a game that's not on Steam, so that part isn't very interesting for this thread. What is interesting is that someone digging around found a listing for a Humble Bundle key on steam tied to the name of the developer of that game. In that Steam key were both The Binding of Isaac and Blocks That Matter. Just a heads up that these games may go pay-what-want in the next couple of weeks.

Very nice glad I waited. I had a sinking feeling they were going to do this when it wasn't included in the haloween sale.

Making a new thread and asking if anyone is interested in a 4-pack will get even more page views but it still doesn't mean its the appropriate place to make the request.
Costume Quest 67% off today only ($4.99)
Thanks for pointing this out. I have been wanting this since they announced it coming to steam, and this seems like the perfect price point.
Yeah, I know - loot's better, monsters are more powerful. You're really missing out on a part of the game if you don't experience the multiplayer portion and having the right group of people is a big part of that. I acknowledge its importance and, yet, I personally enjoyed the singleplayer experience more. It's just... different. You can become immersed in the story, play areas tactically and deliberately, and enjoy browsing all of the loot. If those things aren't as important then, like you, multiplayer makes the game shine brightest.

It's nice that there are two distinct ways to play the game, but I can't help but think that some of those are issues with game design and I hope that Gearbox takes a close look at alleviating some of them with Borderlands 2. For instance, a greater penalty for wandering away from the group to cut down on some of the chest-rushing (take a cue from L4D, perhaps). There needs to be an easier way to view and lay claim to loot best suited to your build. It's often all but impossible to follow along with goals and storyline if you aren't perfectly in synch with the host who controls the progression.
I have to agree with some of the suggestions and I've seen systems that work beautifully within other games regarding loot, so hopefully Borderlands 2 learns some new tricks. However, the story of Borderlands 1 felt like a throwaway overarching quest, IMO. Its most salient points were tied up in text boxes for quests and even then the truly interesting ones were few and far between.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't have to play tactically in multiplayer, but I know certain portions would completely own my team as we were slightly underpowered. Multiplayer with a similarly leveled group of characters is quite simply a challenge that requires strategies and tactics. I also loved browsing through loot the first few times, but after a while, I realized that the average loot drop isn't worth spending too much time on. I find a gun I like and use it until I find a better, similar gun. I learned where the interesting guns typically drop from and what kind of enemies drop them and then I focus on those folks. Selling the extraneous loot became completely ineffectual for many levels because the guns were worth so little compared to my relative wealth.

Well, Borderlands 1 has a lot of things I would change regarding the design of the game, but it definitely has a good base going in to the sequel, so I'm excited for what they will do.

Gah. I have Costume Quest on PSN. I didn't have enough points left when it was on sale to grab Grubbins on Ice with it. I haven't played it yet.

I may as well get the whole package on Steam now.
Hmmm, I have Costume Quest on PSN but I don't have Grubbins on Ice DLC.... Decisions decisions.....
$5 either way, lol. Might as well get your money's worth and get both for the same amount.

would maybe make an odd game but yup.

Already have Costume Quest on PSN, but I don't have Grubbins on Ice, so $4.99 for the PC version and the GoI DLC is a great deal. Picked that up, along with Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines ($5), Ghostbusters ($2.49), and Ghost Master ($1.24).

I found that after research and decided to pull the trigger.

For the sale:

Ghostbusters
Painkiller Complete
Penumbra Black Plague
Costume Quest

I've bought entirely too many games during this sale already. I'm hoping my fellow CAGs can talk me out of (or *sigh* into) buying more.

I'm really wavering on the following:
Ghostbusters: The Videogame
F.E.A.R. Collection
Penumbra Collector Pack
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Bundle

I understand that these are all excellent deals, but I already have many games to play. I am most interested in getting very excellent games. Are any of these compelling enough to qualify?

If you're a fan of the movies then Ghostbusters is a must buy and easily worth the price of admission.

Penumbra and Stalker are slow and thinking games but if you're up for that they're at great prices

The only ones I've played from there is the Ghosbusters game and some of the first STALKER game. The Ghostbusters game I think only qualifies as excellent rather than vary excellent. It is an amazing use of the property, it's funny and exciting, but I cannot say that it's the best game ever. But I think it is still a steal at that price. The STALKER games are also very compelling, and I'd say they're just amazing games. I do think they've been cheaper as a bundle, though, or at least the same price before. So if you're not going to play those now, it would not hurt to wait for the next big steam sale.

The first FEAR game is a fun FPS/horror mix that sets itself apart from every other game in that genre with some incredibly creepy atmosphere. I played it with my 7.1 surround sound turned up loud, and some of the storyline events made me pause to catch my breath. I bought the pack for $10. I haven't played the rest of the games yet, but it's definitely a steal for what they're asking.

The Penumbra series is also pretty good. Both games are essentially the same as Amnesia, if you bought that already. It's a point-and-click survival horror game. You run around grabbing objects and solving puzzles in order to escape, all the while avoiding whatever horrid unmentionable creatures lurk in the darkness. It's well-polished for an indie game, and you can't beat the fear factor of both games for $5.

I broke down and bought a few game collections:

F.E.A.R. Collection
Penumbra Collector Pack
Painkiller Complete Pack

I already have all of the F.E.A.R. 1 and dlc on disc for the PC, but to get it on Steam and all of 2 for under $7 is pretty good.

Less than $17 for a handful of games.

FEAR 2 isn't bad, it just isn't really good either. Standard fare of FPS campaign, I have 6 hours logged with maybe 30 minutes of multiplayer which is passable.

WORST ENDING EVER THOUGH. Not even joking.

YOU GET RAPED. YOU. GET. RAPED.

I want Costume Quest, but I'm going to pass. I'm currently addicted to Titan Quest and don't see myself playing anything else for awhile. So by the time I get around to playing Costume Quest it will have been on sale for 75-80%. I'm not willing to endure the terrible pain over the 8-13% of money I lost from buying it now(a dollar). Seeing a game I've never played in my Steam library go on sale for cheaper than I bought makes me yellow jacket angry.

I picked up the Cthulhu/Breath of Death pack for $2 as they had been on my wish list and got around to starting the latter last night. It's really a lot of fun and a great value for $1 per game. It's an 8-bit style self-aware RPG with humor, constant level-ups, and a turn-based JRPG battle system. It isn't incredibly deep but it's really enjoyable while it lasts. It also has Xbox 360 controller support.

Now that Halloween is finished, it's time for us to save our quarters and rake the neighboors leeves to make some money for the Thanksgiving deals!

Bit on:

Ghostbusters - £1.75
Nation Red - £1.60 (hooray for CAG regional pricing!)
Overlord pack - £3.75
Costume Quest - £3.97
Woody Two Legs and the Attack of the Flying Zombie Somethingorother - £0.87

Total: £11.94

CAG has conditioned me to not buy anything off Steam unless heavily discounted and (Dungeon Defenders aside) it's an approach that's working :)

Who'll highfive me?

High five! Whoops, I do support buying games you really want at launch.

Me, I just got Resident Evil 5 (second copy for co-op) and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. But I already have over 100 Steam games I haven't played, so I don't really need too many more.

Eh no high five from me. Dont get me wrong there are plenty of games that Ive gotten on steam deals and plenty of those games Ive waited on for a deal. But to say that that nothing on steam is worth paying full price for I think is a bad way to look at it. We all have our own gaming habits so there is really no wrong answer. But IMO there is PLENTY of stuff that is worth day one purchasing these days. Now more than ever in fact.

I went ahead and did the L4D bundle this morning. Never played the first L4D and have L4D2 on my 360. Nice to have a "back-up" copy. Now just hope that people still play them both online!

Picked up Costume Quest, Penumbra Black Plague, Ghostbusters, Vampire: Masquerade Bloodlines. Total $15. Still hoping to get Borderlands GOTY so I can pick up the DLC as I only have the base game.

Also if anyone is still interested in a Borderlands GOTY 4 pack, PM bonebreak2000 as he is hosting one. We need 1 more at $5.75.

Lol, you don't have to worry about that at all. I used to be addicted--for lack of a better term--to playing L4D2 multiplayer. I have about 250 hours in it, which is nothing compared to the majority of my friends. There are usually around 8,000-10,000 people playing online at any given time, and I've got about 50 friends who play it almost every day. Some people I've played against have played for over 2,000 hours, and since all of the DLC is free on Steam, I highly doubt that L4D2's multiplayer modes will die out.

Oh...and I had to bite on this sale before it ended. Weighed everything out, and decided to get RIP Trilogy, Penumbra Black Plague Gold Edition (already had Overture), and the Painkiller pack, despite the negative opinions on the rest of the Painkiller series. 9 games added to my library for $8.73...cool.
