Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Note: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.

Ended up with Saw, Costume Quest, Pound of Ground, Cthulhu/BOD VII and Woody Two Legs. Everything was discounted 66% or better. Just the way I like it.
Bit on:

Ghostbusters - £1.75
Nation Red - £1.60 (hooray for CAG regional pricing!)
Overlord pack - £3.75
Costume Quest - £3.97
Woody Two Legs and the Attack of the Flying Zombie Somethingorother - £0.87

Total: £11.94

CAG has conditioned me to not buy anything off Steam unless heavily discounted and (Dungeon Defenders aside) it's an approach that's working :)

Who'll highfive me?

*holds up hand*
Up top!

I bit on a bunch of the adventure games they had on sale. I didn't see Costume Quest or else I'd have picked that up too. Oh well.

Thank you all for the advice. I've managed to limit myself to Ghostbusters and the original F.E.A.R.; the rest can wait for another sale.

I'm not going to post my full list of purchases. It's embarrassingly long. This was a good sale.

A Steam key for The Binding of Isaac and Blocks That Matter is now included in the current Humble Bundle. If you haven't bought it you need to beat the average price to get them.

A high chance Bastion will be part of the next or subsequent Indie Royale Bundles. There's an even higher chance it will be part of the November and/or Christmas sales. 50% off just isn't enough this when a few weeks until sale time.

Just paid the average price for it, thanks for the information

This is what I am thinking. If I had nothing else to play id def bite at $7.50....but with two sales in two months and a backlog I am trying to be good ;(

I'm in the same boat. Must... stay... strong...

What is the logic behind the "high chance" it will be in an indie royal bundle?

I'm with N3UROP0D, the published would seem to make this unlikely in my opinion. That isn't to say that it wont be a few dollars cheaper during the BF and x-mas sales.

I dont think it will be in an indy bundle. But I am 90% certain it will go on sale again. There is a good chance it goes on sale for $5 and if it doesnt it will be the same $7.50 it is now. If not then ill be really dissapointed...but well I bet ill end up getting Dungeon Defenders and a bunch of other good stuff to play on sale anyways.
I am gonna wait on Bastion. I feel like I could do better.
I wish women were like steam games. Once or twice a week a really hot one comes along and yet you still think "eh I can do better, ill wait". And think of how much better things would be if you could justify not taking that girl out because "eh I got a big backlog anyways".
I really enjoyed bastion, and the soundtrack is easily one of the best videogame ost's out there.
Since you mentioned the soundtrack I should mention that anyone who got in on the IGN Prime trial for Steam codes can also get the Bastion Soundtrack for free. IGN tweeted a link to it earlier. I heard that people were only able to get it through that link, so go check twitter to find it.

I'm really mixed. I agree $5 is the sweet spot. I have been eyeing the game since it came out on 360. I will probably end up giving in. The lowest I can see it going is $5 and there is no guarantee. I don't know if the $2.50 or so it may drop is worth this much deliberation.

Worth noting for the current Humble Indie Bundle is that it grants you a download link for Isaac's soundtrack, a property that would be an extra $0.99 full price through Steam.

I put in four bucks to beat the average. I'm sure Isaac will be on sale soon, but I don't mind paying this much for the three games (and maybe more yet?) and putting a chunk of it toward Child's Play.

I find it hilarious that Steam sale opinions and XBL sale opinions are so different. Go over to that thread, and you see a bunch of people saying, "WHOA, IT'S ONLY 600 MSP! Gonna get it right away!" In this thread, however, we get "$7.50 for a really great game? Meh, it'll be cheaper soon enough." I'm so glad Steam deals in dollars and cents and not abstract forms of currency like points. :D

I've been yearning for Bastion to go on sale ever since it was released, and now I'm not sure if I should buy it due to the reasons stated above.

If I do buy it, I'll likely hold it in my inventory until I work my way through my backlog. I have about 4 games to play before I'd get to Bastion -- Alpha Protocol, Batman: AA, Deus Ex: HR and Just Cause 2.

I think it is less about conversion and more about the frequency and discount percentages that PC Gamers are used to vs 360.

Problem with XBLA is there is no competition for downloadable titles. It's Microsoft's sale and that's it. There used to be Amazon but its gone now. Even if there was, Microsoft has a vested interest is making up money on titles for hardware subsidies. When you buy a console, you aren't buying just a device to play games on but you are buying into a marketplace, etc.

That was explained. The Indie Royale bundle is tied with Desura (they process the payment IIRC) and those are all just pulled directly from their site. Games on that list are the ones most likely to be in the bundle, but just being on it doesn't mean anything other than you can buy them from Desura.

Thanks louiedog. I kept reading that thread and see that now :) Games like Counter Strike and Overgrowth which is developed by the Humble Bundle guys are on those lists as well. I am back to my doubtful standpoint.

Not only that but just the sheer amount of games on Steam. I mean with over 1,000 games that are under $10, it does become a waiting game because there are so many good titles on Steam where as XBLA there isn't that many so a deal on anything is a deal pretty much.

Also Sanctum got a hefty update. At first I thought my game had problems since the update is 1.2 GB's then I found out it's the update.

Flip a coin on it; the most you stand to "lose" is around 3 bucks or so.

Yes, I agree. I also forgot to mention the fact that smaller games are forced to compete with larger full retail games. I mean how many people would buy Sanctum of Slime for $5 when Ghostbusters TVG was $2.50

I thought the same thing about sanctum.

Flipped

Grrr. When I first saw Bastion on sale, I was all "YAY".

Then I saw it was only 50%. Then I was all like "well... maybe I'll wait."

Then I realized the soundtrack version was also on sale, and I was all "YAY!"

Then I realized that both the thanksgiving sale and the holiday sale are coming up, and I was all "Well.... maybe I'll wait."

Then I realized that the soundtrack is still $10 on Bandcamp, so 50% off the soundtrack is quite good.

But I doubt I'll actually get around to playing it before Christmas anyway, in reality. And there's little chance it won't go on sale again, even if it's only for 50%.

But I've heard such good things about it. It's so tempting.

Stupid steam sales.

It's exactly that debate that goes on in my head causing me to get fed up with it and just decide to buy in order to stop thinking about it and get on with my life.

I ended up going for it too. Worst comes to worst, to me it's a little extra money to the devs. I know Steam gets a cut, but still.

ARGHHHHGHHFDKGLKDJNGKJDFH

I JUST bought Bastion on OnLive for a buck on Monday. Honestly would rather have bought it on steam for convenience/better graphics (Onlive looks like crap IMO). Now I am contemplating buying again. fuck you steam, fuck you.
How much money are you expecting to save on Bastion with the holiday sales compared to the current 50% off? $2?

Jumped on it now, personally.
Its not just that, but considering the size of my backlog would it be worth buying now and most likely not playing until well after the holidays? Why chance it being cheaper before I will end up even getting around to playing it?

Onlive? Onlive is pure crap.

Highly doubt it'll be in one of those, it was published by WB. I doubt WB is in the business of giving their game out for pennies on the dollar.

I'm in for game + soundtrack, probably the best soundtrack I've heard for a game in years.

Just a reminder, if it isn't too late: you can get the Bastion soundtrack for free if you're on the IGN Prime trial.

Not a fan of Bastion but it's definitely a damn sight nicer than other games I rail against.

Don't quite get the love for the soundtrack either but to each his own.

Doubts have been wrong before. I'm gonna wait it out. If there's even a remote possibility of it being on sale, I'm willing to wait. Even if it doesn't happen in that bundle, there are also two more besides that one coming up as well. Regardless, I know we all have at least one game that can tide us over until then, I know I have MANY.

TL;DR? Follow the yellow brick road.

As for the Bastion soundtrack, it's free to IGN Prime subscribers. Go here, go to the Prime tab (if you have trouble, click on the MyIGN tab/button at the top of the page and on the following page there will be a "Prime" tab, click on it and in the middle of the page will be a link to sign up for a 30-day free trial). I had trouble with this as the image in the middle of the screen didn't show up correctly, but I got past that by clicking the image hidden behind the blank box covering the image link. This will link you to a sign up page, fill in your info, fill in your payment info (you will NOT be billed if you cancel before the 30-day trial is up) After signing up, you can immediately proceed to your account and cancel the auto-renewal of your subscription. This allows for 30 days of free IGN Prime exclusive bonuses without having to worry about being billed (assuming you followed the steps correctly). Enjoy the free IGN Prime perks.

Go here to get Bastion Soundtrack for FREE, once you've signed up.

Have questions? Send me a PM and I'll be happy to help you out. =]

Dammit, thanks for the heads up, but I missed this until I pulled the trigger. I'm alright with that though, Darren Korb deserves my $5.

Yeah, but they were running a promo where your first Onlive game purchase was a dollar. Non of their games interested me other than Bastion, so I figured why not. Not really a fan of the "graphics" through onlive, but for a buck, why not. But, I ended up caving and bought the soundtrack edition through steam...so yeah, wasted a buck there.
