Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Just got through the first level in Bastion, I'm loving this game to death. The core gameplay is straight forward, your average point'n'click hack'n'slash, but it's the little things I love. The occasional crack from the narrator for doing something outside of the game's path, the fact that pausing the game makes it sound like you're in the bathroom at a concert, oodles of things to pull you off the main path etc. Definitely seems awesome thus far.
Highly doubt it'll be in one of those, it was published by WB. I doubt WB is in the business of giving their game out for pennies on the dollar.

I'm in for game + soundtrack, probably the best soundtrack I've heard for a game in years.
Doubts have been wrong before. I'm gonna wait it out. If there's even a remote possibility of it being on sale, I'm willing to wait. Even if it doesn't happen in that bundle, there are also two more besides that one coming up as well. Regardless, I know we all have at least one game that can tide us over until then, I know I have MANY.

TL;DR? Follow the yellow brick road.

As for the Bastion soundtrack, it's free to IGN Prime subscribers. Go here, go to the Prime tab (if you have trouble, click on the MyIGN tab/button at the top of the page and on the following page there will be a "Prime" tab, click on it and in the middle of the page will be a link to sign up for a 30-day free trial). I had trouble with this as the image in the middle of the screen didn't show up correctly, but I got past that by clicking the image hidden behind the blank box covering the image link. This will link you to a sign up page, fill in your info, fill in your payment info (you will NOT be billed if you cancel before the 30-day trial is up) After signing up, you can immediately proceed to your account and cancel the auto-renewal of your subscription. This allows for 30 days of free IGN Prime exclusive bonuses without having to worry about being billed (assuming you followed the steps correctly). Enjoy the free IGN Prime perks.

Have questions? Send me a PM and I'll be happy to help you out. =]

EDIT: Re-posting so more CAGs see it!
How much money are you expecting to save on Bastion with the holiday sales compared to the current 50% off? $2?

Jumped on it now, personally.
$2 is quite a lot for some people here, if you don't believe me go to the steam trading thread and read people dealing with four game packs, they kill each other for pennies! lol

It's not the fact that it's $2. It's more of with so many fucking games coming out, I wont have any time to even think about playing it before the holiday sales so why should I buy it now, if there is good chance it could be cheaper down the road when I will get a chance to play it.

This is where I am with Bastion as well. Anything over $5 outside of a holiday sale that isn't going to be played right away can stay on my wishlist a little longer. With these indie bundles adding heaps to my backlog, I'm in no hurry to buy right now.

+1. I really hate buying a game, not playing it, and then seeing it cheaper months later. If it doesn't look as cheap as it can go and I don't want to play it right now...wait.

Yea. I've been cutting back on buying games even if the price is right cause I have too many I still need to get too. Unless the game is one of those that never goes on sale 'cept once a year.

Or pay $5 to not have to do all that.

Damn, I'm gonna wait on Bastion because the Indie Bundles and because of the two major sales coming up on Steam. Although I'm tempted to bite, I am currently have a backlog too big to comprehend and... well, I'll pick this up when its a tad cheaper.

Stupid Steam making me doubt myself...
Steam tech question!

When you something with expansions and tell it to download...I'll use FEAR 1 as an example...Steam displays it as downloading 3 separate games, splitting your bandwidth. All three show the total (17+GB), and if you pause the expansions and let the main game download, then unpause, the total downloaded for the expansions jumps back up to the current total for the main game.

So my question is...is it actually downloading the whole thing three separate times? Or just displaying it confusingly? I have the expansions paused, just in case...

Here's another question... Does Steam use some sort of compression when transfering? I'll sometimes see the bit rate go above what my ISP supports, and also the time remaining is usually too fast...
Been away from the board for two days, time to catch up. I knew I'd be very far behind when I saw the daily deal was Bastion.

Anyway - Provis already answered this but I wanted to chime in with a personal experience. It really does depend on the game. Valve publishes what the publishers provide. Most game+expansion or game+dlc packages install in parts and take advantage of the base game. The same way that every new Valve game you buy already has a big chunk installed if you have any other Source game installed.

However, there have been a few that install as completely separate instances. Civ IV is my personal experience - when it originally appeared on Steam, we were allowed to purchase the individual expansions (Warlords, Beyond the Sword) from Steam even if you didn't have the Steam version of the base game. When you'd download them, they would download complete instances of the game and expansions into separate folders. It was a mighty mess but it did emulate exactly what the experience was like if you got the non-steam versions, in that you could start the base game, -or- Warlords, -or- BTS.

They have since fixed this; you now must own the Steam version to buy the expansions. Not sure how they download though if you buy them today; I'm pretty sure that 90% of people buying Civ IV are buying the complete edition anyway. I am a rare person who owns Civilization IV: Warlords on Steam without owning Civilization IV on Steam. I can download it - I get a complete version of Civ IV with Warlords applied. Kinda crazy.

Okay that was a long essay and if you're still with me, my point was just that it depends on the publisher. Steam is just the medium.

Winner: Jaysonguy.
Toki Tori is awesome. I had a lot of fun playing that game
A fine game, but it got too hard for me eventually.
Did you guys see the Geneforge bundle was on there for $16 till next week? I loved those old Spiderweb RPGs like Exile and Avernum.
I recently played and beat Avadon. Enjoyed it immensely. Although I'm interested in Geneforge, it looks so dated in some ways. Also, it looks very much like Avadon. I may get the collection when it's on significant sale.

That's how I feel

I grabbed Avadon on a sale and I'm enjoying it and while the early Geneforge games look basic the last two installments look like Avadon so when it's on sale I'm getting it.

Weekend Deal

Sanctum $4.99 50% off
Sanctum 4-Pack $14.99 50% off
Sanctum Collection $10.99 50% off includes all the DLC
Sanctum DLC not on sale :(

Sanctum is the weekend deal at $5 (50% off). The 4-pack is also 50% off making it $15. You can also play for free until 1pm (PST) Sunday.

The DLCs aren't on sale though, which is a shame.

EDIT: Scratch that, the DLC IS on sale. Only in the Survival Kit though. Normally it's $10, now it's $5. Not a bad deal considering all the DLC would cost $11 if you bought them separately.

Sanctum is an excellent tower defense game for those who missed the recent Indie Royale bundle. However, you could probably trade for someone's Steam key to get it for less than $5.

Moreover, Bastion is still 50% off for the next 5 hours.

Decent-ish deal on Sanctum for those poor, unfortunate souls who missed the IndieRoyale bundle. I'd check into whether or not some folks have extra codes from that first.

As to the Sanctm DLC, remember that you can get Aftermath, Aftershock, and Violator DLC codes for free from the IGN Prime trial.

couldnt resist bastion at 1/2 off even though im neck deep in arkahm asylum (yes not city, asylum, 2 years late) and BF3 and already bought amnesia during the halloween sale. There are too many must buy games this season. I still need to snag uncharted 3, assassin's creed revelations, and limbo. Also considering dungeon defenders. On top of that the huge steam sale is only 2 months away!!! ARGH there are too many games and not enough time! :hot:

Don't forget about a potential black-friday sale.
Thought that seemed like a lot. So I checked, and...

It's £2.49 to UK CAGs. If anybody's interested, send me a PM.
So it would be 4$? I'm interested in some copies at that price. :D I'll be sending you a PM shortly.

Would anyone be willing to trade their Sanctum Survival Kit Steam key for my Sanctum (core game) Steam key? (I have an extra from the Royale Launch Bundle). I'll even throw in a Steam key for A.R.E.S., complete with Berzerker Suit.

Tropico series has been added to the weekend deal

Always been interested in the Tropico series but never bit. Tropico 3 sounds like a good starting point for $5 unless this thread tells me it's utter junk.
Tropico any good? Which ones would you recommend for the cost?
This is the proper CAG answer. Buy Tropico 3 gold now and then wait for Tropico 4 to get cheaper. Tropico 3 is a pretty cool game, haven't tried 4.

I've seen some complaints about Tropico 4 being pretty much the same as Tropico 3 in that they share most of their assets and 4 having very little new content. If you don't have either I say pick up 3 cheap.

Tropico 3 Gold is quite good but you probably just need Tropico 3 vanilla. Tropico is good fun but it's one of those games you get halfway through and decide you've had enough of it.

And definitely don't bother with Tropico 4 unless it gets a lot cheaper. It's pretty much the same game as Tropico 3. A classic style sequel.

If I do decide to get the Tropico series, are the first two games any good? That bundle is mighty tempting for an extra buck or two and 2 extra games.

I think Rolling Skill is talking about the first game, but that's not exactly a glowing recommendation. :/

I was talking about Tropico 3 at all points.

It seems to me given the path the series has taken it would be silly to go for the older games.

That said, I don't think that's a bad recommendation. I think that's the best sort of recommendation you can give to a sandbox city building game that isn't Alpha Centauri, and even that was adversarial for added excitement.

I tried out the Tropico 3 demo and that disembodied voice is so damn vexing that I had to shut it off. I'm not usually that shallow but damn...

Thanks for the clarification. I don't think I'll be picking up any of the Tropico games this time. I'd rather save my money for something more exciting than a single player city-building series.

I love, love, love the Tropico games. Played Tropico 3 for hundreds of hours on 360, in the middle of Tropico 4 on the 360 as well.

3 is fantastic, assuming you're into city-builders, or like the general sound of a more exciting Simcity. 4 got knocked for being too much like 3, but I don't know that's fair. The Tropico games are all pretty similar. each building off the next. For people who like the formula, each new release brings enough newness to revisit the exhilarating world of Tropical island dictatorship.

I'd very much like to pick up Tropico 3 Gold on Steam. Anyone know if it's been cheaper than this before? The historical price graphs on steamgamesales don't make sense to me for some reason.
