CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Well... after buying, downloading, and playing Red Alert 3 for a couple hours....

I can already say I prefer Red Alert 2.

What is it with RTS these days and hyperrealistic shaders? Why are all my units shiny and glowing?
Why is the water sparkling everywhere? I can't even tell my units apart :/

I miss voxels.... 3d style rts with all this extra crap sucks......
Nice! I was hoping to win that actually. The challenge seems like it would be fun.

Are you the one that did the mini-review of it a few days ago?
Of course, I am like the Trucker Queen or something now  But ya for what it is and sets out to be it is worth it. But honestly I couldn't imagine paying more than $5 per copy. Could prolly even find it cheaper at like Wal-mart/Targets cheap jewel case only pc games section.

I agree. Red Alert 3 is now way as good as Red Alert 2. But for the price Red Alert 3 isn't too terrible more so the campaign is fun at least. I think the last great Command and Conquer game I really loved was Generals.

But will it activate on Steam if I find it at Wally World?:bouncy:

Another giveaway - some Jade Empire love for someone who has still not bit on it. Ends in 2 hours so you'll have plenty of time to buy it if you don't win :)

So Steam sale ended yesterday and I still end up getting Jade Empire and Last Remnant for less than $5 today...will my wallet ever be safe again?
I have no idea what to play now.... Too many choices.
been playing new vegas ultimate and loving it. if you like rpgs and have dragon age origins, that is a good choice as well, esp considering it has so much dlc content.

Hm prolly not. Though on the plus side no one will know when you become super addicted to it either =p

I spent near 400 bucks on this sale, and spent 2 hours today playing Mole Control which I got for $1.25.
26 giveaways and not one win. I fail at steamgifts.
Think of your entries statisctically. It will probably take a little over a thousand to win something because most of my entries have around that amount of contestants
Do we know what the badges are for?
Do we know what achievements are for? Purely aesthetically, sense of pride on the user.

I really doubt it's anything but that.

You mean we might be ashamed of what we play? Had to laugh when one my friends messaged me while playing CQ - "What the hell is coconut queen?"
I had this problem...then I started playing Coconut Queen.
+1!
I wanted a deeper discount on the Drakensang games, myself. And maybe they'll convince Rhode Island that a deep discount on Amalur is a good idea. I'm a little miffed that I got the game on Steam right now. I've been watching the DLC go on sale all over the internet for the Origin version. :p
They never go on sale that low. Honestly if you really want them get the complete Drakensang retail on Amazon. It's like $10-$15. It's not Steam but it's cheaper than you are likely to get them on Steam.

The problem with those German DTP games is that DTP doesn't give a shit about the non-German market so they just dump them off on whoever. THQ bought Drakensang but shoved it under their Valusoft label. Then they sold off Valusoft because THQ isn't doing that well financially.

Venetica got an even worse fate. Atari never promoted it at all and they didn't even put it on Steam which is pretty much suicide for a PC game in the US that is not by EA or Blizzard.

Oh btw if you like adventure games also keep an eye on Chains of Satinav. It takes place in the same world as the Drakensang games. Since Deep Silver publishes it, they will probably put it on a decent sale at some point.

You obviously are not well acquainted with Steamgifts. Some of us have been entering for AGES and never won. It took me over 1200 entries to win.

The odds are not good unless you get in on some group giveaways sometimes. Do check the number of entries on a contest. If it's 1,000 or more honest you might as well not bother. I used to but I stopped because the chance is just so damned small. I only enter group or contributer giveaways now.
26 giveaways and not one win. I fail at steamgifts.
26 entries? HA!

I'm on 78. A lot of people go hundreds and hundreds without winnings. You have to imagine that if enter one with 1000 entries then you have a 1/1000 chance, or 0.1%. Keep going it at.
A couple of musings about Jade Empire:

1) The 360 controller is recognized instantly and the controls seem fine to me.

2) The first time I played Jade Empire was on an Xbox 360 so I'm bowled over by how pretty this PC port is at 1920x1080 and max settings. Lovely, exquisite, etc.
i need to figure out how to use a ps3 controller with my pc. i downloaded an app a couple months ago that purported to do it, but... it just wasn't that great.

I'll probably pick this up if it goes 75% off any time soon. If anyone is really into 18 Wheeler games, I think the best I've played is Rig N Roll. It's glitchy and a bit overly ambitious with its sandbox style aspirations, but the best of the lot. I think it's a succesor to the 18 Wheels of Steel series. Long haul looks cool due to the longer distances and snow. Rig N Roll takes place exclusively in California, so no snow.

I have added both to my wishlist - thanks! Hopefully the winter sale will reduce them significantly.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the farmer/tractor games on Steam? My boys love tractors and I would like to find something that is not too boring for me to play while they are watching.

I spent $10 on something that made me go back and install Red Alert 2....

Well... I guess that's worth about 10 bucks right?

XD

Yeah, I noticed that the publisher listings and everything on Steam are awkward. Drakensang says it's DTP self-published and DS2 says Valusoft. I just hoped for a bigger sale!

I'd probably get that pack on Amazon if I was in the US. I'll check for retailers that ship up north. :D

Sucks about Jade Empire for everyone that bought it. I guess the moral of the story is wait for 75% or better from now on. That being said I'm probably going to pick up it now that it's cheaper. I have the xbox version but really don't feel like digging out my old xbox to play it (not sure if it's in the list of backwards compatible with the 360 or not)

re: Drakensang Complete pack

You could try eBay too. I know a couple of people who bought it off of eBay. Otherwise if nothing else Gamersgate will probably have it on a decent sale sooner or later.

I had the Farming Simulator in my cart last night but I just had way too much crap in there even for me and some of it had to get the axe so Farming got cut, while every single Nancy Drew game on Steam stayed. :D
Has anyone played the Last Remnant yet? In all seriousness, I played it for a little bit a while back, but not extensively but I did not notice that. I have noticed it on other games though.
What this teaches me is that I should never buy a game for more than $5 on Steam.
Exactly!
3 important things about Jade Empire

1. Kinda crappy to do for the people (like myself) who bought it

2. The people who are getting it now shouldn't feel bad about us, I mean it's a 50% discount on 7.50, there's a 3.75 difference not 20 or 30

3. Honestly losing 3.75 is still better then having to pay 15 for it full price if it never went below full price again.

I'm not going to be all like "oh I'm ok paying more" because no one in their right mind should but I lost 3.75, that's not even enough for one copy of Coconut Queen now.
It sucks and I fell for it the second year in a row. Vampires Bloodlines was the culprit last
year.
Wow, a big fuck you to Steam for Jade Empire. I just bought it literally a few hours ago. That's just not right...good on the people who stuck to their guns about it being too much at $7.50.
I bought mine last night. It sucks to pay more but I'm just happy the game was finally cheaper.
Exactly- I've learned my lesson.

I didn't feel comfortable buying it for over $5 last night- should've trusted that feeling and passed. Never again will I make this mistake on an older game. Then only time I will purchase a game over $5 is if I'm going to be playing it immediately.
I felt about the same but I kept thinking back to how long it's been since the last sale.

I did the same thing with Vampires Bloodlines last year and BAM it is weekend deal! DAMN YOU GABEN!
I bought Jade Empire yesterday for $7.50
You, me about half the thread and 1000's of more Steam owners.
Jade Empire.

Hahahahahahahaha.
That's pretty much what I did when I got home. At first I restarted my client to make sure it wasn't a glitch.
Just wow at how hard Gaben trolled people with this. I wasn't gonna buy it at $7.50 but I can manage $3.74.

I feel bad for you guys who bought it last day at $7.50, this isn't supposed to happen. Hydrophobia is supposed to be the daily so things can return to normal .
I'm going to call this the Vampire Bloodlines/Jade Empire rule. If an old game has not been on sale for several years and goes for even a 40% discount. CAGs, this will cause many steam users to buy the game thus, signally the game is a hot seller that people want. DO NOT BUY!!!!!
It will either appear as a deep discount daily or a weekend deal right after the steam sale.
Hang out a while. Lets get to know each other. :grouphug:
Stay awhile and "Listen".
Jokes on you Gaben! Now none of us will buy anything at 50% off! We'll all wait until 75% off no matter what game it is.
That was my rule and probably several other people. We fell for the "not being on sale again" bait.
Worst thing is I DO have that rule, it's just because how long it was since it had a sale.
Exactly,

I'm going to call this the Vampire Bloodlines/Jade Empire rule. If an old game has not been on sale for several years and goes for even a 40% discount. CAGs, this will cause many steam users to buy the game thus signally the game is a hot seller that people want.
DO NOT BUY!!!!! It will either appear as a deep discount daily or a weekend deal right after the steam sale (normally Summer sale).
I'd really like to thank all of you for making my first sale a great experience with your friendliness and all your help. You all are suuuper awesome, and this thread was the best thing about the sale. For me, I think watching you guys obsess about Coconut Queen was the best part though. ;)
You're welcome we try to make this a fairly civil area on CAG. Occasionally, we have a disputes and scabbles. However, overall it seems we're all here for the same thing. Great deals and we also want to know what other people thought of said game so we don't accidentally buy something like Horrid Henry or Bad Rats. :puke:
Could not stop laughing at the store page's daily deal! GabeN is a MAXIMUM Troll.
Exactly, though I would expect nothing more than the same that refuses to give us HL2 Episode 3 or HL3.
Now that the sale is over, what do we do? Do we actually have to play the games now?
:whistle2:k
Play games???
Sure, I'll put in at least another 100 hrs in CIV IV and King's Bounty. :)
Does the Jade Empire sale mean we have another 12 days of possible increased daily discounts from the sale? Like Maybe ARMA 2 at 75% off?:D

The two main rules of CAG at the beginning of this sale;

1) Wait for daily
2) buy at end of sale if not a daily

Now we need all new rules for next time. :wall:

If there's a Steam spy on this thread, identify yourself! We want to work with you not against you! :D
Third rule of CAG:

3) I'm going to call this the Vampire Bloodlines/Jade Empire rule.

4) If a price is too good to be true, it's probably a GLITCH BUY IT NOW!!!!! aka the The Witcher/Valve Complete Pack/Terraria/Warhammer 40K DOWII Retrib/CODMW3 etc rule.

5) If you get a coupon for % off a game buy the game right away. The coupon could become worthless once the game publisher gets wind of the sale.
I have added both to my wishlist - thanks! Hopefully the winter sale will reduce them significantly.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the farmer/tractor games on Steam? My boys love tractors and I would like to find something that is not too boring for me to play while they are watching.
I haven't had a chance to play either Agric or Farm Simulators yet, but I do want to if just to try them. The price is always too high for me on them (I'll pay like 4-5 bucks TOPS for something like that). Reading some reviews on Amazon it seems Agricultural Sim might be the slightly better of the two but these types of games don't have much of an end game I don't think so unless you really like driving a slow tractor or something I don't know how much fun you'd have playing it. It has other sim aspects I think like having animals and farm workers you manage, but again, these games don't usually excel in game play.

http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/us/en/pc/games/simulation/bus-simulator-2/
Ha! I actually own an iteration of this. Mine is called Bus Driver, but it looks pretty similar. I admit to sinking probably 3-4 hours into it so far. Pretty bad game. The graphics are very outdated, driving physics horrible, backgrounds not detailed, etc. Game play just consists of driving around to different stops picking up passengers and getting them to stops on time. But it's impossible to do so given the bad driving physics and the fact you lose points if you break too hard or crash, etc. I'm motivated by finishing all the missions and unlocking all the buses.
So apparently CheapyD is a DLC homie in Saint's Row 3rd, surreal.
Old news, anyone who used CAG during the time the DLC was out should know this. That said, ya, its pretty neat; just feel they could have had a bit better phrases for him.

I got my first win within a month, then nothing for 3 months. So yeah, giveaways in the double digits and no win isn't surprising.

Also, buying something that is rockbottom cheap and giving it away will get you in to all the super low contributor giveaways. The difference between a non-contributor giveaway and a $.01 giveaway can be huge. You can also troll the forums, lots of people just post keys, or do puzzles, which if difficult, will mean if you solve it, and giveaway with remarkably good odds. Or sit in various chatrooms and play ninja and hope you can input a key faster than others.
Hey guys, when does the winter sale start?
I'm new to Steam, and especially SteamGifts, and Steam seems to have locked my account after the sale manhandled it, so I can't purchase anything really cool to giveaway. BUT, in the meantime, here's a giveaway for a copy of Frozen Synapse. It's an interesting little game if you're a fan of tactics.

Also as Binary Domain will prolly go on sale again at some point either Steam or Amazon. 5 hours into the game and it is my top underrated game of 2012 already. This game is more fun than it has any right too and with as deep as a story as Ghost in the shell. And way more fun than gear of anything. This game is a steal if you get on sale for 10$ or have it backlogged already ;)

Only sad thing is how wrong the mainstream journalists were about this game, and now with only 20k copies first month there is little to no chance of a sequel I hear. I just can not get over how much fun the game is, went in thinking it'll be fun to kill time with and now have a new favorite game :D

Amazon is going to have it on sale again (Binary Domain) for $9.99 on July 28th, 2012. Their doing an encore sale with a few other deals. I have 2 questions about BD - does it have sniper feature/gun? And could you possibly play the entire game using only a sniper rifle?
i need to figure out how to use a ps3 controller with my pc. i downloaded an app a couple months ago that purported to do it, but... it just wasn't that great.
I ended up just getting a Logitech Rumble Gamepad F510 - very similar dimensions as the DS3 (it's a little bigger) and the layout is the same (except for a few extra buttons in the center), which is what mattered most to me. I find the Microsoft style controllers very uncomfortable after a while of gaming. It's been working really well for me. It is wired though - I didn't want to deal with the extra bulk of the batteries in a wireless controller.

I hope steam makes the same mistake they did with Serious Sam BFE at the start of the summer sale and allow stackable coupons. The Trine coupons from summerseal probably dont expire until the end of the winter sale.
PS -- anyone remember the name of the website that used to be mentioned on cag quite a bit; they'd have big sales of a mix of pc/ps3/360 games? their ads would just be a huge grid of games on sale (think I got JE for like $1 and change). can't remember their name, wonder if they're still around.
I'm guessing you're thinking of GoGamer.com. Visiting the page now is a sad affair.
What would you guys consider the best deal for Steam Summer Sale.

Personally I think these were the best deals...
1. Alan Wake
2. Saints Row the Third Collection (didn't buy it, but I can recognize it's a good deal)
3. Fallout New Vegas Ultimate
Thank you. I feel even better now for having purchased all three of these. =D
