CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

This is like the lottery apparently. Your standard version could be Anarchy edition or it could really just be standard O.O

My UPC code is 0 93155 11745 7

Maybe the UPC code can help let us know rather the box is standard or secretly Anarchy? Mine also has a little sticker on the box that says, "'A must Play' 9.5/10 - Electronic Gaming Monthly-"
My UPC is exactly the same. I don't get it.
Is any of the Orcs Must Die DLC worth buying? It's a $0.48 difference by buying the GOTY version with it.
Five new levels: Test your orc-slaughtering skills in a challenging series of fortresses!

Two new enemies: Fear the icy breath of the Frost Bat, and beware the draining magical attack of the Cyclops Mage!

Five new traps if you buy GOTY

It's worth it.

All this stuff about Rage is really weird. I noticed when I placed the order, my order invoice said "Rage PC Game Bethesda" but when I got a shipping notification, that invoice said "Bethesda Rage: Anarchy Edition" so I have no idea what I'm getting now.

You guys are really beginning to scare me on Rage that I bought. The only reason I bought retail was to get the extras. So if I understand correctly, when you enter the key into steam it looks to be a crap-shoot of whether you get normal or anarchy edition?
That really blows when my email clearly says anarchy edition...
I guess I will wait and see tomorrow when it arrives!
It says
Item: Rage Retail
Acquisition Method: Retail.
All the details that Sophita posted are the same for my copy.
Alright, here's my story, got my copy of Rage today, normal box. Popped the key into Steam, Rage(NA) popped up, installed from the discs. Right-click and checked DLC (thanks again Mooby), No DLC installed. Redeemed Sewers code. Right-click, Sewers installed, still no Anarchy pack...ah well, strange though....
Interesting. Looks like my other hunch was right in that they're just shipping out whatever they have and it's totally random as to whether or not you get an Anarchy 'flagged' key. And, again, to everyone who ordered: the Anarchy stuff isn't anything amazing. It's like two weapons, a car, and armor. And the game itself is very limited in terms of play time.

That sucks that not everyone is getting the Anarchy bonus. This was the reason I bought this retail version for $6 + tax. Otherwise I would have had no problems continuing to wait for this game to drop to $5 on some future Steam sale.

You'd be waiting a while. Currently it's still $30 list price on Steam. Even at 75% off it would still be $7.50. So in order for it to beat what you paid (assuming taxes weren't that high) it would either have to go at an 80% discount or higher (doubtful) or they'd have to reduce the base price to $20 and then do a 75% off (more probable but who knows).

I'm sure some retailers might start selling it for $5 just to get rid of inventory but probably not Steam.

I am somewhat new to modding, I just never got too into it. But for some reason, San Andreas look absolutely terrible on my computer (which runs Battlefield 3 at near max settings). The textures are super muddy, the shadows look really awkward, etc. If I'm going to play the game I want it looking at least how it is meant to look (or better!).

I have tried a few graphics mods I found online, and they don't work very well For some reason I have this incredibly bright beam of light on the center of the screen and you can't see anything. This has occurred with the two mods that I have tried. I guess I just don't know what I'm doing. Can someone explain to me how to properly mod my game so at least it looks presentable?

Please shoot me a PM if you can help.

I got the same thing as everyone else. Ordered Rage, notice of Anarchy Edition, received regular edition.

6 bucks is a steal. I can't believe anyone is getting the anarchy edition but some people got lucky I guess. You bought the regular edition and when you receive it then you still got a deal.
I am still working on it but oh man I am loving it.

It makes it 100x better that I made my character look just like Hitler and gave him a female Russian voice. I sat here for an hour with multiple reference photos to make sure it looked spot on.

But yeah the game is WAYYYY better than I was expecting.
I went in not really knowing anything about it except that I met a guy who did some of the mocap work. So far (only a couple hours in) I'm pretty underwhelmed. Don't know what I'd want instead though. Maybe I just need to get past the opening-on-rails. I found that to be frustrating in San Andreas too, the long long tutorial series of missions.

On the plus side, my character looks like TV's Frank.

$9.17 if you used the coupon code (which everyone was able to use). That was back in april.
Ok so I got a question. I own Dungeon Defenders. Any reason I should pick up Orcs Must Die? I think the gameplay is somewhat similar but I am unsure.
They are completely different games. They just came out at the same time and were both tower defense hybrid games.

I greatly prefer OMD FWIW. I'd advise anyone with even a passing interest in action games with some tower defense elements to pick it up at the price it is today.
Ok so I got a question. I own Dungeon Defenders. Any reason I should pick up Orcs Must Die? I think the gameplay is somewhat similar but I am unsure.
I disliked Dungeon Defenders, though admittedly have not played multiplayer, but I really liked Orcs Must Die. I'm kind of tired of the whole tower defense genre as a whole but if I had to pick a favorite it would probably be Orcs Must Die.

To me it plays really different than Dungeon Defenders. It's simpler but in a good way. There's less wandering around and fiddling and so forth and it's basically just lay all your traps pull back and then shoot. The end result for me is that it doesn't feel like a grindy chore the way DD does.

Of course YMMV and maybe you like DD, but it really wasn't my thing.

Despite having some genre similarities they play completely differently and OMD is great fun without the grinding. It's more arcade-y action and less ARPG leveling/loot grinding. As an aside if anyone is interested in OMD1 and might be hosting an Indie Gala 7 happy hour pack (assuming it launches this weekend) I'd be willing to buy and gift a copy of OMD for spot.

Thanks guys, I ended up buying Orcs Must Die GOTY. I keep hearing great things about this game so I decided to give it a go. I liked Dungeon Defenders but it also got too grindy where I had to grind for new items and the game got way too hard to consider soloing.

I realized I have problems, I have great games sitting here, waiting to be played and I am wishing that Indie Gala launches soon so I can play Rig N' Roll.

It seems like if your copy of Rage registers as "Rage Retail" you get the Anarchy DLC and if it registers as "Rage (NA)" you don't.

Reading up on the Rage thing, it sounds like all pre-orders were automatically updated to the Anarchy edition free. My suspicion here is that the first shipment were all the Anarchy Edition and subsequent ones were not or perhaps they had X # for pre-orders and for whatever reason over compensated how many they'd need to cover all the pre-orders and had leftovers.

At any rate, it's pretty clear Newegg has them all mixed up and not separated or marked properly so basically it's a crap shoot. It may be the same if you get it from another retailer too.

Well this is very discouraging and not looking promising since I haven't received it yet. Assuming your hunch is correct, it looks like I got in after the Anarchy Editions.

Hm makes sense in a,"This is a huge confusing mess" kind of way. Just got the final receipt from newegg and even though the first shipment receipt said just Rage -PC this new receipt actually points out Rage - Anarchy edition. :wall:

My honest guess is because all the cases and UPC's are the exact same and look the same. It really is just a roll of the dice rather the key you get is Standard or Anarchy. Because nothing else will let you know until you open the game and enter it into Steam what you got. And by that point I am guessing newegg wont take back a opened steamworks game.

I think this has to be the fault of the publisher for not making these editions have a pronounced difference. That way at least people can tell what version they have before they open the box.

I got my copy on launch and it has Anarchy Edition right on the box. So I am thinking that ID made x amount of copies for Anarchy Edition which were retail and preorders and then since maybe they didn't use every key that was tied to Anarchy Edition, they just gave them out randomly to regular edition games.

That kind of makes sense, as it seems nothing else is different from one box to another. So maybe all the copies from the older boxes have the Anarchy key and all the copies from a newer shipment don't then?
That and they possibly have multiple warehouses from which the stuff ships (Newegg, that is).
Hm, Mine shipped from Memphis, TN (If anyone with non Anarchy got it from another warehouse)

prolly why even with egg saver shipping I got the game today.
That and they possibly have multiple warehouses from which the stuff ships (Newegg, that is).
I've ordered a lot of stuff from them over the years and to my recollection I've only ever had things ship from California or New Jersey so I think they just have one east coast warehouse and one west coast one. FWIW I got Rage from the California warehouse.

Okay just checked Newegg's site and they only charge sales tax in California, New Jersey and Tennessee. If they had warehouses in other states they'd have to charge tax there too. Never got anything from Tennessee so maybe they have some other kind of office there.

*Edit: Okay Sophita's came from Tennessee so I guess they do have a warehouse there and maybe I just never got anything from it due to living far from there or maybe I did and forgot. :p

Anyway, I'm way over thinking this. :headache: and the end result is still the same.

Yeah what I am thinking is ID Software went to Steam and said we need x amount of keys, for this special edition. They put x amount of games as the Anarchy Edition preorder and x amount as the Anarchy Edition for retail. When they realized that they did not get enough preorders to get rid of every Anarchy Edition key, they probably repackaged keys with the regular edition box to save money from reprinting Anarchy Edition boxes again.

Not as many people ordered Rage from Newegg in the south. So I bet they still did have these older copies of Rage that were unmarked Anarchy edition like you were saying. So sounds like if your in the south you got lucky.

Wow, so Orcs Must Die comes in at a whopping 5.6 gig download. Didn't expect that . I was curious to see how big it was, if it was under a gig I would download it sooner than later, but it can wait.

From speaking with customer service they informed me there is no way to know what version of rage we are getting. Apparently all the boxes look the same since there was information about this issue from their "help desk". The sales person suspected this is why it is so cheap, there is no way to know what version you are getting and it is a crap shoot. What is frustrating is once you enter the code its tied to your account, if it comes up non anarchy there is nothing you can do and on PC you can never upgrade to anarchy edition. This is a MADHOUSE!

Mine is only 4.88 GB and I got the DLC, too. Though I did download the demo from a few days ago.

I decided to buy it from the recommendations here. I liked the demo. Feels like a less micro-managing Tower defense game than others I've played.

For what it's worth, I bought the Humble music bundle. I actually already own the TMBG album, having received it for my birthday last February. Great album.

I can understand people not caring for music collections like this, but I was very thankful for those I bought before flying to Tokyo last spring. And again driving across Wisconsin at the start of summer. I may not listen to these right away, but if I pop them onto an mp3 player or mp3 disc for the car, I will.

In on-topic news, I caught up on the thread far earlier than usual tonight. Must be slowing down. This means I have time to play one of the games I got in this last sale!

...

Coconut Queen it is.
It's made by Wadjet Eye which means two things. It's probably good and it will probably be in a bundle. Given how many times Gemini Rue showed up in a bundle, I'm waiting. I actually bought that damned game as soon as it hit Steam and then an hour or so later it popped up in the Indie Royale bundle. :p
Ah, I missed that Resonance is a Wadget Eye game.

I'm still annoyed at them for The Shivah, which had serious bugs/issues on my computer which had me uninstalling it after an hour or so. It was just a really depressing game, what time I spent with it.

I miss living in the South. Been living there the last 4 years in Nashville and Memphis respectively. Back in good ol' California.

That's too bad about RAGE. The sawed off shotgun was largely a throwaway item, as were the spiked knuckles, but the vehicle wasn't too bad and the armor was a bit like a cheat. At some point in the game you have to decide between a few pieces of armor, each of which grants you a bonus... the Anarchy armor grants all of the bonuses.

All that aside though, you won't be missing out on anything by not having them. You'll likely play through the game one time and realize that you never want to touch it again.

I think the only way you can buy Russian keys on Steam is by deleting your C:\Windows\System32 folder.
Just open a command prompt with adminstrator privileges and cut and paste the following command.

reboot and enjoy

I liked it, rented it from redbox, played it through, then bought it on one of gamefly's big used sales (unfortunately they only had the non-anarchy edition  ). I liked the game all the way through.. until the end.. the ending is kind of like - whoa? that's it? there's no more? Other than that though, I thought it was a pretty fun ride.

I am right there with you - same thing - already have it and the DLC I want on 360 (didn't buy Moxxi). But I have added it to my cart on steam twice now. I may play it a bit tomorrow (since it's a free weekend) and see if I need it on steam.

Same here. I bought Rage at launch because it's an ID Software game, and I was unimpressed. It felt like mixing the desert like world of borderlands with a half ass fallout inventory/mixing system. It just felt like a bland mix of games. Also the PC version at launch had bad graphical bugs where textures would not show up, lol.
