CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
My copy of Rage came in today from Newegg. After I popped the code in and checked the DLC with a right click-properties it shows I have the Rage Authority Pack and Rage Sewers DLC. That's the Anarchy stuff right? Oh, my UPC is 093155117457.
Yes.

You should have the worthless double barreled shotgun after leaving the Ark and your fists should have fancy blade things on them. Proof positive.

You have all the DLC. Offload the extra codes if any to less fortunate

posting giveaways from bundles. I tried to enter some rig n roll giveaways and everyone had commented that they were being reported.
Doubtful you'll get reported if you do a group giveaway and I doubt anyone outside of here wants to be part of the Brawny Gents and Coconut Queens.
Ok back to the land of brawny gents.
What are they reporting people for?
Technically according to the policy of the Steamgifts admins and mods you are not supposed to give away individual keys from bundles. People have been Railworksing it in to get their contributor level up way high while paying next to nothing and spamming up the list with tons and tons of the same few games.

A few games they also claim there were some exploiting keys where people managed to grab a whole bunch without paying like Puzzle Agent though I don't know the specifics that went down regarding those incidents.

All that shenigans aside there's also some question as to whether the individual keys should be given away period since some people abuse the system by using the DRM free and giving away the Steam key essentially making what was supposed to be buying a single copy of a game two for one. Some of the bundles also have terms that forbid giveaway individual keys, though obviously it's not something they can enforce.

I get why Steamgifts are doing it but I also feel like they are being really heavy handed and honestly out and out rude about it. And then there are the net nannies running around who feel it is their solemnly sworn duty to tell on everyone.

I think first time offenders really should be given the benefit of the doubt. There's also the fact that they have absolutely no way to prove someone is giving away a game from a bundle vs something they bought on Steam. The evidence is purely circumstantial.

If they have such a huge problem with it I think they should just temporarily or permanently remove those specific games from the drop list of games to give away. Problem solved and then they don't have to go off on huge rage fits over it.
What are they reporting people for?
They are reporting people because if you read the Sg TOS it says thay making giveaways for individual keys from the bundles is forbidden. I don't think that when it comes to private group giveaways it is going to be an issue unless someone from the group reports you though, since only group members can see that giveaway.
Also I rather like my nifty little dynamic sig that shows what I am playing at the moment with a little banner picture but it only works on Steam games not shortcuts. :p
Aren't you on Raptr? Raptr has custom forum sigs that show gameplay and work with anything that the client recognizes. That's where I got mine and several other folks here have them too.

It would be easy enough to temporarily remove those titles from the list that are part of big bundle giveaways and reenable them a few weeks later. I still think the system would be subject to gaming, though, because people who are buying a ton of cheap bundles for steamgifts giveaways could just wait a few weeks to start doing the giveaways. The other thing they could do is just ban people who are obviously abusing the system by loading up the site with 10-20 gifts of the same game within a 5-7 day period.

Awesome, wasn't aware raptr had a sig...but I kinda like mine...

EDIT: And wow! Rig n Roll is 7GBs!!
EDIT: in regards to the indie gala, I havn't boosted at all, is 16800 alot or pretty much the average?
That's actually pretty high. I'm at 22500 Gala points and I've done several group buys. I've almost got enough to get 20% off of an Indie Gala coffee mug.

Much higher than me. I'm at 12100, but I haven't hosted many group buys. I do one for each bundle. Maybe I'll have enough to get 5% off of some Indie Gala socks or something.

If you go to the site and log in, the last dropdown item on the right will be "Account"; the penultimate item in that menu is "Signatures and Widgets." You can hit that and just pick the one you want. There are quite a few styles to choose from.

I thought you guys were serious for a second about the Gala mugs and socks. Don't joke because we might get that. :p

Is there a list somewhere of what non-Steam PC games raptr supports or is it just sort of trial and error?

Anyway, I'll have to check it out but their sigs look a bit busy to me. I don't need all the stats I just want pretty pictures of the brawny gents and succulent fruits and so forth.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused. Is their Indie Gala merchandise?

I just want flipping Rig 'n Roll. I wanna get a copy for my husband too so we can play at the same time and pretend we're trucking!

Yeaaaaah, I know romance.

No list outside the client that I'm aware of (you get a dropdown menu when you try to add a new game manually); however, you can easily search for games on the website (there's a search box right at the top of the page in the middle).
Is there a list somewhere of what non-Steam PC games raptr supports or is it just sort of trial and error?
Pretty sure it supports mostly everything, I mean it even supported tracking that game Slender I posted about earlier, and its not even sold anywhere or out of beta.
Anyone can give comment on the Death to Spies series? Worth trying (installing)?
Yep it is from what I heard and why I bought it during the Steam Summer Sale. A Russian made Hitman set in WW2 and is considered among fans of games like Hitman and stealthy games to be one of the best hardcore stealth games. Much like Hitman is.
Apparently, Rig N' Roll support wheel natively:

Sunghost and I were just kidding.

All kidding aside though, I get the feeling that after the secret of the Gala Points is finally revealed, we'll wish it was mugs & socks.

I believe facls said that he lives in Brazil, therefore he won't be able to buy from Amazon.

So GamesGetGo is a good option (I guess) for people who live outside the US.

Hmm, I wasn't aware that I wasn't supposed to give these games away. If they have such a big problem with it, then they should remove the games, or maybe just lower the value. It's only open to the CAG group, so hopefully I don't run into any trouble.

EDIT: Looks like someone from the CAG group already reported me. What happens next?

Or you could pretend you're team drivers in one rig. Get a refrigerator box, frame it up over your chairs, then take turns driving. Remember that MCSA has a mandatory hours of service limit of 11 hours on after 10 hours off. As team drivers, you could go all day.

question: if ever you buy a game on steam that was initially windows only for steam, and eventually gets a mac version (steam play PC+Mac)... do you automatically get the mac version on your games for DL or you would have to repurchase it again? thanks!

In most cases you get both automatically.

They do list the bundles themselves. but only after the bundle sale period is over...and you must give away the complete bundle...I think the rules are stupid myself.......

The CAG group is everyone and their grandma at this point. Once we started doing giveaways a whole huge influx of no CAGs got in because basically anyone in the group can invite anyone else so people who weren't even CAGs and never heard of the site were asking to get in.

There's too many people in that group now and 99% of them I've never seen or heard from before. As far as I am concerned posting anything to that group is more or less akin to posting a public giveaway, so be warned.

Some non-CAGs won some of my giveaways during the big sale. You can just say that it's required they show proof of being a CAG, or we can ask the group admins to change permissions so only they can invite people. Then we can start kicking the non-CAGs. Going through the group request thread and kicking anyone not in there is a good way to make sure.
That's really lame.

I hate when indie developers do this and it's the reason I pretty much refuse to buy indie games off Steam because I've been burned before by buying games that went on Steam where they devs wouldn't hand out keys to existing owners.
i'm... confused? 'off' in your sentence is ambiguous... are you saying that you refuse to buy games 'off' Steam (as in 'from' them, 'I bought it off a friend'), or 'off Steam' (as in 'not on steam')?

I'm guessing you mean the second, but the first is... the more common usage in this case, i think?

basically, why wouldn't you want to buy an indie game already on steam... they aren't the ones that did anything.

as for 'indie devs' not giving keys.... there are some possibly valid reasons for doing so. it may be a nightmare/impossibility for them to accurately track who deserves a key. it's one of those things that sounds simple, till you're one or two people trying to deal with 20,000 emails claiming they deserve a key. sure, in a perfect world it would be automated, but you'll still be inundated with problems.

second... corporate america double dips FAR worse than indie game devs in general. music and film, especially, but also in gaming.

So I got my copy of Rage today, and it seems to be the Anarchy edition. It registered as "Rage Retail" and I have both the Authority Pack and Sewers DLC. I guess it is really a crapshoot.
They do list the bundles themselves. but only after the bundle sale period is over...and you must give away the complete bundle...I think the rules are stupid myself.......
it makes sense to me. the pay what you want bundles are already abused... it really should be called 'pay what you can', because that's a better representation what is meant by the honor system. anyway, as we all know, some used to like to buy for a penny... and giving people like that an incentive to not only buy for themselves, but then to buy a hundred copies to give away (for Steamgifts cred + contributor status) is extremely problematic.

yes, it makes it odd for some people that honestly have multiple copies of the game, bought at reasonable prices. but to not have that policy would absolutely encourage the bottom of the barrel to abuse the bundle system to a ridiculous degree.

the bundles are meant to be bundles. it's an ethical thing. my recommendation is to just give spare individual games from bundle keys to your buds, or to a poster you like here, and just skip the steamgifts thing.

I meant not on Steam.

There might be reasons for it but as I said others have managed to do it and also they are losing sales because there are indie games I'd probably buy if I could get assurances that I'd definitely get a Steam key if and when it goes on sale there.

It's not a huge deal to me, I can wait, but I still think it kind of craps all over their existing customer support base when they do that.

Thanks! Now i have to do more research on PC games that might get a mac version in the future. hehe!

I finally won a steamgifts giveaway that wasn't a small group with multiple copies. I went to check the givers profile, because it's been a couple hours- he is suspended... :D

True, I rarely check the Amazon deals since I can't purchase from there. Anyway, just posted the deal for you guys since I won't get it, I've been trying to actually play the games I got this past sale (though I'd have gotten it for 5 bucks).

BTW, thanks for the tip of changing the difficulty level of Fallout 3, now I'm exploring the landscape without getting worried about getting killed constantly (though it still happens). The size of the land overwhelms me a bit, but before I know it I've spent two hours playing it.

I've also been playing The Walking Dead (truly great, now on chapter 2) and RF Armageddon, which is a fun shooter, but it occasionally crashes, even when on DirectX 9. The same thing happens to me with SRTT, which is also from THQ.

--SUGGESTION REMOVED--

Another way is just to ask someone to buy it for you; you just send the total amount as an Amazon gift card; heck if you need help just let me know
Actually you can purchase from Amazon, but you need to do a couple of things: Register a US Credit Card with an US address (even if the CC is expired, as long as the CC format is valid just assign a future date - Amazon will not check the card with the bank as far as I know). Purchase a gift card and send to the new account. As long as your gift card credit covers the cost of the game you're good to go, no check on the CC will be made (of course this is only useful for Steam-based games, where you get a code)

Asking a friend to get something for you is fine but please don't recommend for people to commit fraud here.

So I purchased Borderlands GOTY Edition during the Steam summer sale as a gift to myself and just now got around to installing it but it says ERROR Failed to contact Key Server....what gives? I noticed its currently on sale for 75% on the Steam store frontpage is that the reason why they've run out of keys???

I'm sorry, but how is it fraud if he's paying for the game (by purchasing an amazon gift card with his regular brazilian credit card)?

Its a free Borderlands weekend. maybe they are overloaded? I'd say keep trying to install it and also contact Steam Support since you did pay for it and should be able to play the game.

If you've already been reported, send a ticket to support ASAP and say that you didn't know you couldn't offer bundle keys. Mark it urgent - they will remove your giveaways and hopefully nothing will happen.

Next, try to find out if that idiot is actually a CAG. You might want to ask an admin to verify him, and if he's not, to kick him.

But what the CAG group really needs is for only admins to be able to invite people.

Totally Agree
Side Note I screwed up on Coconut Queen and didn't use my gems to unlock the 2 locked levels thinking that they would open as I beat future levels. Crap. :wall: :dunce:

Could probably just add a description that goes along the lines of must verify actual CAG member for at least 1-2 months or whatever time-frame seems suitable. Though I'm not sure that plays nice with SteamGifts rules.
