Free Stuff - Needs Updating

There are quite a few free and free2play games and mods on steam. You can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Just a heads up for the few of us that don't have all the King's Bounty game. The Indie Gala store has a King's Bounty bundle where if you spend 99 cents you get KB: Crossworlds and if you spend 3.99 you get KB:Armored Princess and KB: The Legend.

I bought the 99 cent KB:Crossworlds level and it actually gives you a key that when you redeem it you get KB: Armored Princess as well. So really getting 2 games for 99 cents.

 http://store.indiegala.com/index.php/the-king-s-bounty-bundle-3.html

The fact that they continue to sell Armored Princess at all despite it being fully included in Crossworlds kind of annoys me. And not just because I have redundant entries in my Steam list. But yes, it's nice of IG to sell it so cheap when every other bundle it's been in has kept it behind the BTA-wall.

I agree 100 percent. Would of annoyed me if I BTA and found out later it was fully included with Crossworlds.

Today's deal is The Darkness II at 75% Off. Most of us should have this from the Humble Bundle  $4 2K Bundles from back in April, but for those who don't heres my $0.02:

At this price it probably isn't worth it. I just finished it two weeks ago and while it was a fun experience and the story was actually pretty gripping, it really is just a little too short. Jackie Estacado is a fantastic lead character and some of the darkness moves are cool and convey a great sense of power as you tear through hordes of enemies. Even the supporting cast is good, particularly Jimmy the Grape, Johnny Powell (be sure to scroll through the relics when you finally meet Johnny again) and the Darkness. However, even playing careful by trying to find all the relics on the first playthrough, the game is only seven hours and never gets that difficult. The cell shaded graphics are done really well, up there with Borderlands, and the game runs smooth. The Vendettas mode adds a few more hours, but I would suggest waiting for it to hit $5 or lower to make sure you get your money's worth.

Weeklong Deals:

Magrunner: Dark Pulse -33% $19.99 $13.39
Supreme Commander 2  -66% $12.99 $4.41 (has been cheaper)
P.A.M. Post Apocalyptic Mayhem -75% $9.99 $2.49 (3 pack $6.24) (has been cheaper)
Jack Keane -75% $9.99 $2.49 (has been cheaper)
Ankh 2: Heart of Osiris -75% $4.99 $1.24 (Ankh Pack has both games but is .01 higher)
Ankh 3: Battle of the Gods -75% $9.99 $2.49 (was cheaper in December)
Lucid -75% $4.99 $1.24

Thoughts on a few of them:

- Supreme Commander 2 has been slightly cheaper, but it is still a really good deal. You want the DLC as it adds a tremendous amount to the game.
- P.A.M. is a mediocre track racer. There's a bare-bones singleplayer game. It's mildly entertaining but overall underwhelming.
- Lucid is a decent puzzler, but it's not very deep and, frankly, should almost be .99 as a base price. Seems like they gave this away somewhere at one point...

Which Humble?

I dont think its been in humble bundle. I only saw it in amazon bundle or as a bonus in a preorder of some 2k games.
Yeah my mistake. I didn't remember buying it and assumed it was part of the THQ bundle, which is where all my major games that I don't remember buying seem to come from.

I checked and I actually picked it up with Spec Ops: The Line for $4 as part of a combo pack. Either way, it was far cheaper than the current $7.50.

Where are the files you need to copy on a PC for any specific game in your Steam directory? Would it be:

C: -> Program files(x86) -> Steam -> SteamApps -> common -> Metro 2033. Just copy that Metro folder? What if there is a Metro folder in my documents folder, would I need to copy that too or is that a file that appears after installing?
Yep - that game-folder in the ....\Common\[Game name] is the folder to copy/back-up.

Also, you need to find out where the game-saves go, too - especially if there's no Cloud Save Support for your game.

For a lot of older games, good luck finding them. They could be anywhere - in the game folder itself; in the App Data folder; where-ever.

Some might be in My Documents.

Quote: MysterD, Motoki,

Lots of games use your documents folder for savegames and game config files, so ideally yes, you want to copy those too. You're correct though in that the steamapps folder is the primary game folder. Though I'm not sure why you'd only want to copy a specific game's folder.
I plan on burning my games to DVD's instead of a hard drive. I'll try to find my saved games, that sounds like big headache down the line.
Maybe it's different for you for some reason, but you shouldn't need to use GameFly's client to view Steam keys. GameStop...yes, GameFly...no. Just go into your account, click on purchase history, click on the order detail in question and your key will be there. It should also show up in your "GameFly Order Status Update" email.
How do digital downloads from Gamefly work? I looked on their site and couldn't find anything. Do you just click to purchase a download from Gamefly and it will give you the Steam key without needing to download a client or even any files?

Pre-Cloud games typically store their saves in AppData/Local, which is a hidden directory under your username in Vista/7/8. Usually happens with a lot of indie Steam games, too. You'd think that would be another restriction, to limit where the gamesaves and user prefs folders are created, to fit in with the portability aspect of Steam. Should be a mandatory update for all games, really; I've lost a lot of saves over the years because of this.

About burning to discs:

If you have some big games - i.e. Hitman: Ab and RAGE are over 20 GB - hope you have a lot of DVD's. ;)

Or you might want a BR-burner. ;)

Normally, when they get THAT big, I just back 'em up on my external hard drive - since I ain't gone the BD-burner route yet.

About GameFly:

You'll need their client, yep. You jump on that; get onto your account; and check your account to go get your code there.

I do have a lot of DVDs  :whee: I'll split up the files and put them on multiple discs.

Thanks guys. Putting this for note to self:

Steam Games location for backup:

C: -> Program files(x86) -> Steam -> SteamApps -> common -> (game name)

Steam Saved Games:

Could be anywhere - in the game folder itself; in the App Data folder; where-ever. Some might be in My Doc

What about if he has keys for games you already own? :p

That's what secondary Steam accounts are for. Duplicates totally count towards the backlog total.

About backups...

I began compressing folders and burning them to DVDs. Then I used the Steam backup system + DVDs. After some failures with DVDs and seeing I would need a LOT, I evolved to HD backups. Then Steam began changing the file system of a lot of games, which made my backups kind of "meh"

Now I don't even care about it. I just re-download if I need to

Don't you people have spare hard drives? I end up buying a new one every year for one reason or another. They're not expensive. I mean, I know you can't buy them with Steam Wallet, but still...

I used to compress Steam folders but they changed something a while back and Steam refused to detect my backup folders, so I started using their backup thing. It's kinda buggy but it works, and it also has the bonus of compressing the files somewhat. Unfortunately it can take a long-ass time to do some games, and Steam freezes while it's doing its backup.

I have a huge DVD spindle with all my backup installs, but anything under 250 MB doesn't get burned to DVD.

My internet sucks so I'd rather leave a game downloading overnight then back it up than spend hours upon hours downloading it again.

Gamestop made me install their client to get my Steam key, never shopping with them again. Gamefly always provides my Steam keys on their website with no issues, I always have a good experience with them.

Yeah same here.

GameSTOP makes you install their client (although I've heard some accounts where they didn't in some cases for some people so it's sort of YMMV; they always have for me though)

GameFLY gives you the Steam key immediately on the website and by email. You can also look it up at any time by going into My Account > Purchase History and viewing the individual purchase transactions for each game.

I've bought a number of games from Gamefly that were Steamworks and never once have I installed their client.
