New Thread:

This thread has been replaced by TSDT v11

Daily Deal:
Please check the Steam homepage.

Weeklong Deals:
Steam usually has week-long deals that change on Mondays at 6PM UTC. They mostly feature indie games, and may not run every week.

Sale summary lists:

Key:
⤷ indicates DLC, — specifies part of a pack, + shows alternative versions, ⚠ highlights things worth knowing, ♫ is obvious, and ... denotes a multi-pack.

Holiday Sale 2013 | 19/12/13 through 3/1/14:
Days 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-14.

Spring/Autumn Sale 2013 | 27/11/13 through 3/12/13:
All days.

Steam deals on other stores: (Related threads on CAG.)

Indie* bundle threads: (*Not always indie, nor always a bundle.)

Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

Haven't gotten around to playing the Witcher yet. Isn't that relatively strategic combat, though? Like Dragon Age?
It's chain attacks. So you can't just button mash. It's timing based but once you get that down it's pretty simple.

- Activision game at 80% off

- Only other game on the weeklong list that I'd consider buying is NASCAR.

=> One of the better deals this week.
A turd published by Activision is still a turd.

Hm, I was under the impression that it was like DA as far as choosing your attacks and sort of waiting for activation times and whatnot. That piques my interest a bit...

But I think when you can hit someone and do no damage you are really stretching the definition of "realistic." I personally thought the combat in Dead Island is better than anything in the TES series. At least it feels like I'm doing damage and generally hit things when I point at them.
In all fairness, neither Oblivion or Skyrim did the dice roll "will I or won't I hit the target" thing. Which seems to be the only thing (not pointing you out, others have done this too) people seem to be bringing up when complaining about TES combat.

That thing is spreading like an epidemic.  Just to assuage my paranoia -- it asks you to 'sign' a confidentiality agreement re: the beta but there's no sneaky DRM in there, right?

Stupid Wiki feature keeps reverting the thread to a non-Wiki one.
Yeah, that's what is broken about it. It falls out of wiki and they've never fixed it.

There is a lot of blocking going in Skyrim, especially as you set the difficulty higher. That's actually a big reason I like it, since you can't just run up swinging like a madman. That works in Dead Island because you're usually hacking and smashing on zombies who are all offense and no defense (which lends to the survival aspect when you can damage and kill them without any defense on their part, while they have the advantage of swarming you). I like Skyrim because the block-heavy combat style means you have to feint, backstep, and make use of power attacks to stagger your opponent and get past their guard.

Then again, you can always use bows at long and short range. That's fun too and is really hard for your opponent to block. It can be a little too easy, but I don't use crosshairs in Skyrim, so it's pretty fun.
I'll give it another try once I get my computer back together. What you describe sounds fun, but what I played wasn't What you describe sounds more like Chivalry or War of the Roses than Skyrim.

Well, that's more of a running joke for me than anything else.

Darkest Dungeon, a turn-based side-perspective blobber has started its Kickstarter today.  They're already at $55k of their modest $75k goal and the stretch tiers look great.  I post here because apparently they've already gotten Steam approval so you'll get a Steam key when they add it.

Dead Island: Epidemic Beta Gifts x2

Who wants one?
Apparently they are revoking keys for people who trade them (which makes no sense because they are giving people extras to gift) or so The Trader's Guild group on Steam claims.

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/TradersGuild#announcements/detail/1513510408744938366

PSA: Don't trade for Dead Island Epidemic
FEBRUARY 10 - MAXIMUMBUNNY
http://store.steampowered.com/app/222900/ Is going to be free to play and is currently in closed beta, but apparently trading it is in violation of the NDA/Non-Disclosure Agreement and they are revoking those copies.

I repeat: copies are being removed from libraries/inventories for people violating the terms (which involves youtube videos, talking about it publicly, screenshots, and sellers/traders).

Just wait until it goes open beta to be safe. Meanwhile, we're adding it to the banned games here and any posts found trading it will be removed.
Considering that Deep Silver did revoke keys in the past for Dead Island (the original) there may be a grain of truth to this, though I would imagine if someone got their copies legitimately they should be safe and that there may be people doing shenanigans and then trading it.

You can't cancel swings to feint like Chivalry in Skyrim (it's a shame Chivarly suffers from the entire "THAT'S BULLSHIT" CoD feel), but the footwork and everything works in a similar way (especially if you stick to light armor). The thing is, if you're just jumping into Skyrim on normal (adept?) mode, you can go about things with pretty much no strategy whatsoever; hack, slash, repeat. As you scale up the difficulty, combat relies a lot more heavily on the things I've talked about.

I have a rather dark, out-of-her-mind young woman on my current Skyrim setup who decided to assassinate a certain young Whiterun resident, escape from the prison time it got her, and then take to sneaking the body out of the city by nightfall through stealth and picking key guards off from long range. It was a tedious, difficult situation, but I pulled it off and made it out of the city with the body (console commands to "bring" it with me through the gate), and that put only the city gate's guards in my way. I'll tell you, on expert mode, those guards are not NOT slouches in melee combat. Magic, poison, and some fancy close combat were needed to whittle them down and finish them off, but I pulled it off, claimed a farmstead for myself, and brought the body there for further rituals.

I suppose this rambling just goes to show Skyrim is so much funner when you use your imagination, but like I mentioned, the difficulty setting is key to combat having the proper depth.

Anyone else notice some already released games making some minor change and getting bumped back up to the top of the 'new release' list?

First Agarest and now Loren. I don't even think it's intentional but that sort of exposure most likely has an effect on sales and it seems like something that could be easily abused.
Replying to myself, but now I notice Taken: Red Saber is at the top of the "new releases" list.

I wonder if this has something to do with the new "updates" feature since it started happening around the same time and both Loren and Takedown got updates recently. There were a bunch of other games that did too though and those didn't get bumped to the top of new releases.

*Edit: Some people called them out but the publisher is blaming Valve, and got defensive. :p

That is a Steam glitch guys, we don't control that. Believe it or not, we don't control a lot of the Steam stuff. Why would they even give anyone the ability to put it as a new release haha?

Here are just a few examples of the Valve/Dev control balance:
  • About 1/2 the moderation actions done in the forums here are done by Valve community moderators, but we are taking 100% of the heat.
  • The free gift (buy one get one free) was a Steam glitch left over from a promotion we ran a long time ago, but we let people keep them rather than picking a fight to have it removed from those that received it by accident.
  • We "requested" the 90% off sale as a promotion to highlight the recent patches and DLC. Even that gets approved by Valve.
  • We don't control what is a "New Release," all we can do is bump games for the new "Recently Updated" tab.

There is a lot that is out of our control, but people seem to love to blame the evil devs/pubs for money grabbing, unloading, censoring, etc.

Steam has bugs just like everything else, we are not trying to unload the game (its digital, there is no inventory to unload 0.o), and we are not trying to dupe people by saying its a new release. Period.

No gimmicks here.

Today I earned all my card drops by actually playing Guacamelee instead of just idling.  I think that's the first game I've ever done that with.  I guess my CAG rank drops a level now.

I did that with my very first card drop game during the beta, Don't Starve.

...

Back when the cards still went for over a buck a piece...

Finished Driftmoon today. Thanks to whomever gifted it to me (fox?) from some contest. Ten hours of playtime with a good amount of humor, fun gameplay, interesting puzzles, corny and cliched but well written story. Crashed a couple times and had some annoying bugs, but thankfully it has a good save system. It also has mods!

A-

Anybody played Lego: The Movie: The Videogame: The Book: The Graphic Novel: The Show yet?
Nahhh, I'm waiting for it to hit HBO, as Lego: The Movie: The Videogame: The Book: The Graphic Novel: The Show: The Miniseries.

Whoops?
Looks like they forgot to drop the MSRP on the four-pack. Pretty clear indicator of just how many packs they were actually selling.

They respond better if you call them dirty aussies Bruce.
Koala'd.

I wish people would buy my turds for $4. If I shape my turd like a zombie will anyone buy it?
Get some toothpicks and put together 30 seconds of stop-motion video, and you'll be ready to launch a Kickstarter for Zombie Turd: The Poopening and make a bajillion dollars.

Times like these I wish we could tag other CAGs in posts. #EARTHBOUNDX5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tag you're it

I wish I could offer my Steam library to my teenage self since he had the time to sit around wishing he had more games.
and then laugh at his ass when he tries to play well anything on his 486SX 33MHz with 4 MB of RAM and a 1MB cirrus logic 5446 video card with a 110 MB hdd

Plus, just think what he would think of the graphics! I still remember being bowled over by glquake. It was a whole new world.
not sure he'd be too impressed

A turd polished by Activision is still a turd.
they have a whole room full of this at Activision

sent you a pm and offer

Why? Are straight Republican senators known to enjoy lollipops in New York subway bathroom stalls?
does a frog have a water tight asshole?

So, I've got a friend who's bored to tears in college and I was trying to figure out some games for her. She's into shooters and zombie games, apparently, but it's a bit hard to figure what there is along those lines that will run on a cheap laptop for school. Cheap is good, too.

Any ideas?

Not that anyone here would know anything about that sort of sentiment.

I heard somebody bought and iPhone just to get Flappy Bird before it got pulled.

What kind of shooters? First person? Top down? Third person?

off the top of my head:

- Killing Floor

- Left 4 Dead 2

- Nation Red

- Zombie Driver HD

Why did it get pulled in the first place? I keep hearing "Flappy Bird" but I don't pay attention.

Nguyen has repeatedly said on Twitter that the press is "overrating the success" of his games and that the sudden fame and attention is something he doesn't want, saying "please give me peace". He said today that though he is planning to remove Flappy Bird from the App Store, he will continue to make games. However, he isn't interested in the future of Flappy Bird and he won't sell the app to another developer.

I knew nothing of this until I hit MR the other day (one of my occasional tech news sites...best source for mac news/rumor)

Hey guys, my Zombie Turds have become too popular/successful. I've received too many offers via PMs. I've decided to stop selling them because they're starting to get overrated. Sorry!

On the plus side.. I'm sure Drabe will be pleased!

Dunno how well Killing Floor and L4D would run on cheap integrated graphics cards. Unsure of how Nation Red would run either, but that may be a good idea.

Wowwww, that's hilarious. Your game gets crazy popular, so the obvious move is to have a panic attack and pull it.
