Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.
(NOTE: free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.)

Hm. That's the opposite of what I've heard--I remember reading that people recommended Civ II>>>>III.
When Civ 3 came out, yes. Civ 3 was an incomplete mess and Civ 2 was a complete version incorporating all of the patches that they could sell as "expansions" included. By the time Civ 3 went through the same process of patches sold as expansions it was at least close to as good.

Just an FYI, Civ3 is widely regarded as the absolute worst game in the series, and by a longshot. Civ4 and Civ5 play widely different, but both are immensely superior games.
I'd argue that Civ 3 complete was better than Civ 4 and Civ 5 when they were released. Civ 4 certainly is better now that it, too, is complete. Civ 5 may be at that state, too, with the Brave New World patch.

I hate how damn GPU-demanding Civ 5 is. Civ IV plays nicely on laptops (apart from the 16-20GB footprint).
I play Civ 5 and the Gods/Kings expansion on my laptop with intel hd3000 graphics and it works fine. I haven't played with a huge map though so maybe I would find that that is a limitation. I should start some games with various map sizes to see how they play. I can't remember my graphics settings either so maybe I turned some down below the defaults.

Thanks a ton for that! I must have been searching wrong, I kept getting some pretty bland zombie apocalypse mods. Now to figure out how to mod Minecraft.

If I didn't know Castleminer Z was $1 on XBLA I would still be tempted. I have a problem.

Well, I guess I didn't mean for it to sound that way; I wasn't really biased against LEGO games before I played LEGO Batman 2. I was genuinely trying to give it a fair shake. I interpreted my issues with LEGO Batman 1 as being primarily associated with the fact that I tried to play it using mouse+KB.

Oops. I always feel like I'm walking a fine line when writing reviews between spoiling a story and giving the potential player a decent plot summary.

I do hammer that home a bit, I guess. I can see how that can come off as smug, but I guess I really feel like these games are made for kids with a few winks and nods at parents who may be playing them. Maybe I'm wrong about the target audience. I probably don't mean this to sound as demeaning as it evidently does.

In any case, I appreciate the constructive criticism, Fox. I tend to either really like or really dislike a game, so I don't have too many middle-of-the-road reviews, but I'm always open to ways to improve my writing.
Yeah, the Steam users are real finicky. I don't even think catering to not offend is a good strategy, those just happened to be the things that jumped at me. I still thought it should be upvoted though because like you said, you provided a rationale behind your words, not just "this game sucks." As far as plot spoilers, I struggle with the same thing. I personally think the plot of 99% of movies and games is a pretty predictable thing so I don't really get why people get up in arms about it, but a lot of people tend to want to experience it first hand.

Capcom games on sale at GameFly:

Add the usual coupon code that I can't find and get them cheaper.
It's FEB20OFF

The main Capcom game I'm looking out for now is Street Fighter X Tekken,,, but it's gotta be the Complete edition. Good lord there's $86 of DLC.

Chronicles of Mystara for $4 after coupon? You call that a bad deal? I'm tempted to get it.
Has been cheaper in the past. ITAD says it was $3.74 on gamestop. May have been the same price elsewhere.

EDIT: Was $3.75 on GMG too.. before voucher.

I just picked up a evga gtx 770 sc with acx
Cooling for 289. It was b stock but comes with 1 year warranty.
Do you mean this one: http://azerty.nl/0-5644-626549/evga-geforce-gtx-770-sc-acx.html ?
(website is in dutch, but the product title is clear)

Gigabyte 770 2GB is what I went with after extensive research, couldn't be happier. Well I could be happier with a 780 but the price is too damn high.

If you can afford the 290 it's easily the superior card. I'd prefer 780 over it but I'm assuming you'd pay another $50-100 for that... depending on if the coin mining craze has died down. So... you might go 770. I thought about splurging on a 780 but figured the 800 series is going to be a bigger tech advance so I should wait until then. I got the 770 for only about $40 more than I'd have to pay for a 760.
Well the 290 seems to be about 50 bucks more expensive on average. Not sure if that's worth it. I've read about the 290 making a lot of noise, though the Sapphire cooler works a hell of a lot better than the stock one (but even then it's still a very noisy card).

The most expensive 770 card is the one Drabel mentioned, after that the Gigabyte and after that the MSI.
What's the difference between these three? What makes one more expensive than the other?

The 780 is 100 bucks more expensive than the 290, therefore waaay out my pricerange :D
I'm building a desktop for around 1100 euro (fyi, all the prices in dollar are the same in euro).

P.S. Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it!

I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for something to come along around the $200 ish price tag I paid for my 560ti when it came out 3 years ago but it just wasn't happening. The amount of extra performance still isn't worth plunking down another $200 and the 560ti is still a fairly solid card.

So I did something very unCAGlike. When the price dropped to $500 on the 780 I bought it. But hey, I got 3 free games (even though 2 were UPlay waaat waaat waaat waaaaahhhhhh) and $100 off of a Shield. :p
I think I'll need to win the lottery before I can spend $500 on a GPU. I'm spending too much money on diapers and baby paraphernalia these days to fit a 780 into the budget.

The R9 280X launched in October with a $299 MSRP. Under normal circumstances, I'd be able to start finding deals in the $250 range by now. Instead, the cheapest one in stock at Newegg is $430! That's $100 more than the GTX 770 that it trades blows with in most reviews. Ugh.

Both Civ2 and SMAC are far superior to Civ3. There are just too many poor design choices in Civ3 and the game too broken in too many ways for anyone to even bother playing it ever again.
SMAC is far superior to everything else. It kills me that EA refuses to sell that IP back to Firaxis.

When I click that link it says it died of measles.

I hope I'm not going to catch measles now, it's been a while since my last shot =/

Edit: Holy crap, now it says it died of cholera. I'm off to the doctors, I'll bbl =/

Edit2: Now it says it died of a snakebite. I'm still feeling kinda feverish though.

An update to the Undead Pirates Crew group/Free Nightmares From the Deep situation:

The dev posted this in one of the threads in the group.. it's not in english so I used google translator.

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/nftdsupporters/discussions/0/540732347247936142/#c540732596608375703

Thank you for your ideas and suggestions. This is our first game on Steam - only to learn, and probably some things could be done better. We will try to find out if adding games to the accounts of members of the group on the day of release is possible (and is not associated with the shift). At the moment, simply enter a login Steam or Steam Community ID and email address. In case of any problems and we will consider each case individually, so that any interested person who has supported our initiative, received a code.
I get that they're new at this, but it's ridiculous to be asking for your login/username.. however, it's nice to know that you can enter your Steam ID instead.

I wonder why they didn't just take list all members in group and import it to database etc.

Then they could use steam's openid login and do something like:

if you in members

-> assign a key if not assigned

-> show key

else tell to fuck off

Yeah. I also checked and the only posts I could find about it were either spanish, portugese or russian. And none seemed to have gained a lot of traction. Can devs publish different pages/info/offers to different regions?

My suspicion is they always offered just the DRM free version and it could have possibly been restricted to regions where they didn't expect many sales/money to begin with due to piracy.
I messaged that Jur guy in the thread there and he linked me to a couple of posts in English about the whole free game for vote thing.

...CastleMinerZ that if you vote yes and send a screenshot for some mail, you would receive a full copy for free. At least they didn't advertised this in their Greenlight page, I made a little search cuz it looks interesting.

Also it's been discussed in a reddit thread where people are going nuts about how terrible the game is and how the developer censors negative post (IMHO this is a real problem when Valve handed them the keys to the forums).

It was Greenlit, http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=173765673

Because of bribery. They gave out free copies of their abomination for anybody who voted yes.

[–]_gl_hf_ 7 hours ago
They have no way to identify who voted as such they can only give out free copies blindly.

[–]113mac113 2 hours ago
Which is why the only people who fall for this shit are like 12 years old

This promotion is no longer avalible. Also, you had to send proof that you voted along with a message that you voted, or else they had no way of knowing that you actually voted.

Apparently this is kinda sorta backhandedly addressed in a post on Facebook that states "If you bought the game on our website you will get a steam key. Note.. This only applies to people that actually purchased the game. Not got it free though a promotion."

I'm told the original post they made for this offer has since been removed so it's hard to determine exactly what they said or how clear or not clear they were.

Still, I think if you offer a free game for votes for Greenlight in order to get into Steam it carries a certain implication of getting a Steam key for your vote. That certainly has been the common promise for a number of games now, though come to think of it I don't think I've gotten a single one of them yet.

TL;DR - Like Fox said they apparently promised a free copy of their game if you sent a screenshot that you voted for it on Steam but there was some confusion over the fact that they (supposedly) didn't intend to imply giving a Steam key, just the DRM free. Also it seems like this offer was mostly spread around non-English regions.

I got it Xmas day for $3.00 from GMG and $0.10 in credit. Supposedly a good bit of effort was put into this port.

Reposting/quoting.

I played through the first two missions of Jane's Advanced Strike Fighters ($2 Steam Weekly sale, ends tomorrow morning)...

Technical Notes:
It is 30 FPS capped. Forcing 8x MSAA through the Nvidia Control panel doesn't seem to have an effect.
It ships with 360 controller support but oddly it's not quite ready to use out of the box...you need to replace a file with another file
in the game folder/inputconfig/ replace default.db.xml with XBOX 360 Controller.db.xml

This gets your 360 compatible controller working and recognized. Well... unless you're using a wireless controller. My DS3 with BetterDS3 in bluetooth mode acted like yaw-left (L1/LB) was always down. There are a lot of forum reports of this problem with wireless 360 controllers. Switching to my wired F510 alleviated this issue.

Gameplay:
It is an arcade game. The controls and handling are very user friendly. Your weapon supplies (missiles/bombs) regenerate after a short interval. It succeeds as an arcade plane game, but doesn't seem to do anything new. In the first two missions been given the opportunity to fly a F/A-18E, an F/A-111G, a MiG-21, & an A-10. I took the F/A-18 (multirole) for the first mission, and the F-111 (ground-attack) for the second mission since I was send initially on a bombing mission. Well it seems like any aircraft would really work, with an upper-hand to multirole aircraft due to recieving new/different missions while aloft.

If it appeals to you, and you have a wired 360 controller (or fancier flight-stick) and can tolerate 30 FPS, then it seems like it's well worth the $2 sale price.

Edit: I also tried my DS3 in USB-mode but had the same left-yaw problem.

re: Polish devs asking for login info/CastleminerZgate

Ugh, you know I think I'm done with this 'vote for us and join this group/send a screenshot/stand on your head and get a Steam key when Greenlit' nonsense and will just wait for these crappy games to end up in some crappy bundle.

So, my money is on 2 of the games they will add to the Humble Bundle next week Sid Meier's Pirates (Which should be a no brainer) and CivCity Rome. If they add CivCity Rome, I will buy the bundle solely for that since my name appears in the credits.

EDIT - I think my name is in the in-game credits for Raliroads but I can't find out until I buy the bundle or someone checks for me.

I was just about to post the same thing. They probably shouldn't be allowed to game the sYstEm like this anyways. Not that steam has been very selecTive about who geTs in. I do think I'll get some enjoyment when it gets bundled but minecraft mods will do for nOw.

yetto

An adjective for describing a large line of cocaine. A yetto line is usually much larger in size and will most definitely get you extremely 'coked up'.
"Katie just busted me out a yetto line and now I'm super skeeted."

works I guess

I remember picking up CivCity Rome for $1 from Steam many Xmases back. (21 Dec 2010)

skeet

Uh...ok then.
It's probably my violent American side talking, but I think skeet, I think clay pigeons.

So RE: Humble Bundle - I am glad I didn't jump on the Amazon deal for the Sid Meiers Ace Patrol pack. I find it a lot easier to throw my money at the Humble team.

RE: Graphics cards - If money isn't an issue, get an Nvidia 770 or 780. You won't regret it if you're the kind of guy who likes running everything on the highest settings and it will last you.

Nvader Jim won King of Fighters XIII on my stream today. Not sure if any other CAGs won as some of them use different usernames.

Also, can you guys vote for what we give away next week? http://strawpoll.me/1125445/
