Tips on how to rip (not download!) ISO disc images of PS1 games?

ISO discussion may be iffy, so let me just clarify that I DON'T want to download any warez here. All I want to do is put one of my own PS1 discs in my PC and create an ISO image from it, to speed up load times in an emulator I am trying out.

So what's good for that sort of thing? NERO or something like that?

Thanks, I will have to try that out then!

See, the emulator works way better than I anticipated... the only thing slowing it down is the disc access, so it'll be great to cut that out of the equation. Then I can just disregard all limitations and state-save / throttle like a madman.

Why don't you use google and find the right board for potentially illegal discussions instead of crapping on our boards.

You do know about the internets, right ?

Oh, yeah, and IN BEFORE THE LOCK !!

Is ripping my own game really that taboo? Oh well, if I am to be lock'd, then I am to be lock'd.

I have two PS1's, a PS2, and an aunt that works at SONY. I plan on using this with a game that I have THREE legitimately-purchased working copies of (long story). Bah Humbug to all legal panty-in-a-bunchers... my conscience is at ease! O:)

I want to do this so I can play games like Suikoden II, Valkyrie Profile, etc. without worrying about scratching up my discs...

Why not get your aunt to ask around at SONY? I bet they'd know how to help. ;)

Wow, I honestly didn't expect this much controversy! I thought I remembered reading some HD Loader discussions before, without there being much of a fuss. I'm just wondering... just tryin' to be a good CAG here.

This thread is perfectly legal. I'd actually like to know more about this as well, so I can just make a CD booklet of all of my games (in burned form), so I can keep my collection looking neat without ever needing to touch it.

Nero is a BURNING program. Not a ripping. I don't know how to rip PS1 games. You could try WinISO, but I doubt that'd work. Google it?

Apparently you have never actually used Nero.

Okay, this Nero interface is confusing as hell! I got to the screen that I think lets me create an ISO. But it only lets me select the ".nrg" file extension. I need to create a file with a ".iso" extension. Anyone know what this crap is all about?

.iso is a universal image file format.

.nrg is a image file system that only Nero uses.

If you want a program to handle all formats (.iso, .bin & .cue, .nrg, .cdi, .mdf & .mds, etc.) then Alcohol 120% will be your bestest friend.

I'd help you, but if you get flamed for asking - I don't even want to know what will happen if I help.

Ok, this is WEIRD...

I finally figured "what the hell" and just created an .nrg image of the data track. I just renamed the extension to ".iso" and tried loading it with the emulator. Much to my surprise, it worked without a problem! I can't believe that worked... not an exact CD image but it seems to give me enough to actually play the game.

Very strange...
