video game references in song lyrics
saying things like this is like saying gluttony, greed, and mysogonism does not exist outside of rap culture.

People will show no hesitation to point fingers at rap music (whose exposure to the masses is mostly controlled by viacom in an effort to keep most people ignorant btw, which shows you are nothing more than one of their victims) while ignoring the stacks and displays of maxim & fhm at store counters.
No it's not- it's merely saying that the main concentration of gluttony and greed is in rap, which, as previously stated, is false. Children and tweens aren't mimiking (sp?) the actions taken in a song's lyrics, they're mimiking the way that they believe a band/rapper/singer acts normally. Yes, mainstream gangsta rappers project the image that they do nothing but fight and make money, and mainstream southern rappers project the image that they don't do anything but lounge around, smoke weed, and hit on chicks, but mainstream rockers are no less guilty.

A punk rocker may sing about fighting the establishment in their lyrics, but public image sees that they mainly project the image that they like to (you guessed it) do nothing but fight and snort coke. Screamo bands project the image that they physically cut themselves in their sparetime, and then children follow suit. Some death metal bands project an image of violence far surpassing anything that I've ever witnessed from a rapper. Hell, moshing is the pure incarnate of violence in music- yet I don't see any of it happening at a rap concert.

I won't even get started on movies.

Rap isn't the beacon of violence and gluttony. The entertainment industry is. Mainstream rappers just like to talk about it a little more openly.

Back on que, Jekki, don't criticize someone for taking something out of context and then do it yourself.

...And I want any factual proof from any credible site that Viacom is actually running the rap industry to "keep the man down." That's pure unsubstantiated bullshit.

Not that I listen to much punk as all of the screaming just kills my ears, but from the audible puck I've listened to, drug use is referenced in the context that it was something they did at a downpoint in their life and its something they regret. When I hear drugs in rap its generally spoken about as something to aspire to.

This is another generalization and a stereotype that shouldn't be there. There are many examples of drugs in reference to something the artist had to turn to in order to survive.

Listen to December 4th from Jay-Z for a good example of this.

And I'll go on record saying I'm for the use of drugs, (pot for the most part,) depending on the intent and the frequency. If I were in a situation where I didn't jeopardize anything by using, I probably would. I get drunk to have a good time or mellow out. There's no difference between that and smoking up in my eyes. In some cases, mind altering drugs can throw your creativity into overdrive. (How many classic albums were written and recorded under some influence of drugs?)

More Del from "Sleepin on my Couch"

I got enough from the other seven brothas
in the den playin' Genesis
damn I can't win at this

That was the first gaming lyric that popped in my head. Damn, I feel old now. Del's debut album released in 1991.
Thanks OP.
:D

Oh no you di'int Kayden!

You had to bring one of my genres of choice into it. Punk.
Unless of course you're talking about newer pop-punk, screamo crap.

The only stuff I consider punk was created in the late 70s.
If that's what you meant, that it's all screams and noise... well, then grumble grumble.
Haha.

What do you like Kayden?
(sorry to add to the Off Topic-ness)

Joe Budden-6 minutes of death

"lil niggaz they ain't around that powder
They ain't super or luigi or Mario, ain't found that power
plus they couldn't spit fire if they found that flower"

I didn't bring up punk.

In no particular order, Clutch, KMFDM, Gnarles Barkle, Queen, Styx, Rush, Led Zepplin, Daft Punk, Static-X, Def Leppard, Skynard, Megadeth, Stonesour, Deftones, NIN, Rammstein, Deichkind, APC > Tool, AC/DC, American Head Charge, Depeche Mode, ELO, Stones both Rolling and Queens of, Heart, Hatebreed, Powerman 5000...

Kindof an odd assortment according to most people.

And I know a lot of those people may to a lot of drugs, but that's not my point about rap either. I just don't like the mainstream glorification of the usage. I used to smoke myself, but I didn't go around saying, man, I'm so pimp cuz I inhale a phat reeferoni.

Queen is the best group you listed. Gosh I love them.
There'll never another Freddie Mercury. (i'm lookin' at you Mika)

Oops, and you're right, you didn't bring up punk. :)
So to that other guy, yeah, all those punk guys did like to fight, wasn't much else to do in those days with no job and no school. (even my lovely Buzzcocks partook in a scuffle or two)

even change my pro fighter Q for you"

There's 2 video game references in there.

fucking SHAME on this community for getting to page 4 without a mention of Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince's "Human Video Game." There's a fucking beatbox of Donkey Kong and Pac-Man! Jeez. Unfortunately the CD version cuts out Pac-Man (and like a 30 seconds of "Nightmare On My Street") so god bless the cassette and vinyl.

Not sure if this has been mentioned:

My brother was always singing this one:

The Ataris "Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start"

Skipped school and went to the arcade
Hung out and played galaga all day

Just googled for this one:

Karmic Jera - "Sex Toys And Video Games"

Sex-toys and video games
Turn on plug in and play

Alone but illuminated
Touch the screen
Taste a warped reality
Explode the pleasure zone
Get up grind
Grind grind against me

"Got a quarter in my pocket and I'm heading to the arcade..."

(kicking it old school - those were the days)

Del mentions NBA Jams in that song about cooling down and hanging out and shit on the Future Developement album. I forgot what it was called.

Oh, and I like both types of hip hop. I like the novelty of the mainstream hiphop ( listen to the song "Cigarette" by Fort Minor ) and it's not just about the topic, some people can say some pretty clever shit. I like that too. I also like the indie stuff too like Del and such.

The song is called "Games Begin"
Horse the Band has a few. Listen to Birdo or Cutsman. Both awesome awesome songs.
Horse the Band is fucking amazing! I saw them live at a small venue (a coffee house with a stage in the back) and it was one of the most insane shows I've ever been to. My friend dragged me along and I had no idea what to expect. They are considered "Nintendocore" its like grindcore with 8-bit synth in the background.

Another band that I like is Futuristic Sex Robots, thier album Hotel Coral Essex is all about video games, computer shit, porn and stuff like that. They've got a song about Back to the Future that I would recommend to anyone.
...And I want any factual proof from any credible site that Viacom is actually running the rap industry to "keep the man down." That's pure unsubstantiated bullshit.
there is no credible website proof, but it can be shown by just paying attention to the history of their takeovers.

I do not kno when they took over MTV, but they took over BET around 98,

before that, everybody who was everybody had a record deal. Furthermore, everybody had videos out. Heltah Skeltah and OGC 2nd album singles?? They were on rap city. Onyx still on Def Jam? yup. even mother freakin Hieroglyphics You Never Knew music video got decent rotation on that channel.

Then in 99 Cash Money came out. This was the turning point for commercial rap. Immediately everybody was getting dropped from their labels, Rawkus and Loud began to deteriorate, and rap city became the basement. The shift in content was MAJOR. It's obvious to anyone paying attention that there's someone working in the back picking and choosing what goes on the air and what doesnt.

and actually, I jus remembered something that may indeed back up my claim:
http://www.sohh.com/articles/article.php/7519

hip-hop is one of the most broadest forms of music out there. It emerged out of struggle, we've all heard Grandmaster Flash, NWA, etc hence why the more violent aspects of it are so prevelant. But if you're living in the 90s amongst a vast array of styles and topics, the ppl who aren't paying attention will only heed notice to the shock value material. For the gun drug & street heavy dudes like MOP, Wu, & Nas out there, we also had Pharcyde, DITC, and Jeru. Criticizing the culture back then wasnt any different than the pick-n-choose exposure of artists today.

Think about it for real, how the hell does Rich Boy and Baby Boy Da Prince get their records out over dudes like Sean Price?

sorry btw, I'm a little too tired rite now to fully read any arguments. I may have probably missed some big points

Dave Chappelle - 2pac Parody:

Your crew don't phase us.
We'll make you bustas pay us.
Run up in ya spot like CJ from San Andreas.

Paula DeAnda - "Walk Away"

Does she know you like to play PS2
'Til 6 in the morning like I do:roll:

Its not just rap, this is how the RIAA/major labels operate in general. They control the means of distribution, so they control the content. They play a very big role in determining what is popular and what is not, across all genres. Its not a conspiracy theory, its business.

Rap went completely commercial a long time ago, it was obvious to anyone paying attention. Theres about as much substance now in mainstream rap as there is in other pop music... None. It IS just pop music now, on the same level as your Timberlakes and Spears. Its influence has driven the rest of pop music towards a more R&B style. You've had to look beyond mainstream rap for anything of substance for the better part of a decade now. Theres as much trash rap about gangstas as there are trash love songs and trash soft rock. This is all that major labels are interested in producing.
'
This is the real reason why they're killing licensed internet radio. Its not because you can record it, its because people are getting exposure that they don't want getting exposure, and its dilluting the market. Theres a reason why most regular radio stations play the same crap.

You know it's sad Fooms. World Pop is better then ours for a while and most of our Dance stuff is trash unless you're talking some old Hip-Hop.

dafoomie, while that is true understand that a lot of artists that do not get shine on MTV have so many more outlets with which to reach audiences.

retail stores and magazines directed towards the youth play a major role in getting out a lot of fresh names, a medium such as rap has a much harder time getting that attention. what is interesting is non-viacom owned TV such as Adult Swim and G4 has companies like Def Jux and Stones Throw promoting and advertising on them.

If you picked up an older issue of the source, it's horrible~!!! It began to turn the same time television did and become nothing more than a reflection of music videos. Thankfully, the magazine has improved itself 500% with Benzino kicked out.

anyway, let's keep this thread about gaming. I made a hip-hop thread which I will personally keep bumped even if nobody replies in it =P Bring your arguments there

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the way we get the first Black Billionaire is by the man selling BET to a bunch of whack old WASP and WASJ's?
Too bad too since I liked them airing "Amen" and "Thea".
Apathy - Can't Leave Rap Alone
Celph Titled: "The Rubix Cuban's at your door, but I ain't singin no carols/
I'm like Donkey Kong, I got you n***as dodgin my barrels"

Demigodz - Off the Chrome
Apathy: "I'll crack ya trachea like Dracula in Castlevania/
body slam, crack ya back like Wrestlemania"

Jedi Mind Tricks - Death March
"Bring the gun, your tounge is what I'm slicing/
We slap tracks and attack like M. Bison"

Casual - Say That Then
"Record companies don't want me on after they rapper/
coz for real I make em look like Parappa tha Rapper"
Those are awesome.

I might come up with a few after work, or would you take home-made lyrics as well?

You talkin about Bob Johnson?

got another one:

Souls of Mischief - The Interrogation
Phesto: "it's Metal Gear for the track layer/
Sword blaze your vertebaes up/
Swing my laser like a space-age sensei"

there's this other line by Ryu from Styles of Beyond where ho goes "fireball tiger uppercut" but I cant find the lyrics online. too lazy to get my CD out

CDs, only 2 and a half crates full (becoz I always sell back the ones I dont like). Been buying since 94!

then spindles full of dvd-r/cd-r archives. I got all my MP3 albums listed in a txt file with the name and date of the disc they're on. I try to keep my HD free so I'm always archiving, prolly got like 15 unarchived gigs on my computer rite now o_O

u want some???

"I go for broke when I loc out on the endo,
later I'm just laying on my bed playing my Nintendo"

from the song "Free Us Colored Kids" by the Juvenile Committe

Also, Kayden needs to leave the thread. His complete lack of knowledge of hip-hop makes any argument or logic he tries to use or make completely invalid.

I discovered another Phesto game reference on the same Souls of Mischief cd today

Souls of Mischief - Sup Doder
Phesto: "She electrify when I'm erect with sexual voltage/
Bust out pole position if she f***in with the Souls Of Mischief"

which reminded me of another Hieroglyphics pole position reference:

Opio - Talk Dirty
"Diggin how she lose her inhibition, pole position in the left lane/
Give b***n while I'm switchin gears, c**t is pierced/
But this one is not a punk rock chick"

and altho I said I wasnt gonna mention lyrics that jus mention systems, this one is good:

Boot Camp Clik - But Tha Game iz Still tha Same
Steele: "I stay real since 'Atari' and 'Calico'/
Late night hustlin', hangin' with my peoples/
What's in my 'X-Box'? Unknown to the cops/
'Cause I don't 'Play Stations' close, I ain't tryin' to get knocked/
It's not a 'Game, Boy', nah, I knew that from the 'Genesis'/
When you see me, I'm fatigued up, stay in some Timberlands/
Soldier in this 'Game Cube', bang dudes, gang rules/
It's not a 'Dream Cast' when your life flash in your view/"

and I dont kno if someone mentioned this one already, but since I'm talkin Boot Camp I'ma break my rule again:

Black Moon - Who Got Da Props?
Buckshot: "I'm the rugged operator like Arnold Schwarzenegger/
Buckshot quick to play a n***a like Sega"

I'm sure all these hella lyrical doods with weird styles that rap about basically everything, i.e. MF Doom, Sean Price, and Ghostface, got some game lyrics.

But the only thing I can think of rite now is Ghost's verse from Crackspot about xbox and PS3

I was just going to meantion Black Moon :D

BTW, 'Enta Da Stage' is a true classic.

so are Warzone and Total Eclipse, no lie.

when I heard Total Eclipse, it seriously resparked my interest in hiphop (coz before that I was listenin to anticon -_-)

I'm hoping 5FT gets out of prison quick, coz Buck said he aint gonna do another Black Moon album until then.

Murphys Law-Sit Home and Rot

girls well they're ok
but i'd rather watch tv anyway
sit at home and play atari
smoke my herb like rastifari (I have no idea how to spell that, lol)

I listened to Lady of Rage's album today... how could I forget this magnificent closure?!?!?!?!

Lady of Rage - Sho Shot
"the heavyweight undisputed, still hit MC's like
("Hoo-yu-ken!") break it down now
Lyrical murderer, hit MC's like what?
("Hoo-yu-ken!") c'mon now
Ain't a damn thing changed
I still remain, the ill, reputed
And just in case y'all forgot or, just didn't know
I hit MC's like ("Hoo-yu-ken!") break it down now "

A "Killer Instinct" reference, in the Styles Of Beyond song of the same name:

back him in a corner let Saberwolf sick 'im
wit a Ultra Combo hit 97 megabit...

from 311's "Sliver":

now breakin' 'em all to pieces like a sly rap bandit
with a fly Liu Kang kick in Mortal Kombat and I land it

Liu Kang is brought up again by Busta Rhymes in "Just Give It To Me Raw":

After my money gotta kick the b*tch up like Liu Kang

The soundtrack to the live-action Street Fighter movie has a ton of SF references by various rap artists, but I'm not sure if it's really fair to count that.
