What are your thoughts on the new DVD cases at retail?

Has anyone else seen the new DVD cases showing up at retail? They are the ones that are missing plastic on their front and back covers to save plastic. I'm not too happy but they seem okay if they'll save the environment, the art could easily get destroyed.
 
Wait.. so is the art printed on the actual case now or something? I like the plastic on the cases and the art on slipcovers so you can switch out cases if you need to.. I really hope that the art isn't printed on the case!
 
No, there is just a huge logo of the recycle symbol like cut out of the front and back sides of the case. It really makes the cases a lot more flimsy and breakable, and as said, could result in some damaged cover art (a hole could get punched through for instance). I personally hate them.

The first DVD I got with this kind of case was The Temptations tv movie, and the cover art has a few rips in it where the holes are in the case. The actual plastic in the case feels flimsier, too. It's quite annoying.

Thats pretty horrendous. One could also say that it causes more waste, since I know many people who would be willing to trash these in favor of actual protective cases, a la the old style.

Whatever. I barely buy DVD's anymore thanks to Netflix.
 
LOL Lucky for me I haven't bought a DVD movie in forever, so I haven't run across this. I think the last movie I bought was the original Crank on DVD from Circuit City during the last Black Friday before they went under.

They couldn't come up with a better way to reduce the amount of plastic used other than making ginormous holes in the cases? That new design is totally retarded. I wonder if Blu-Ray cases will follow suit.:lol:

Seriously, who cares how much plastic is in the DVD case? I'm not throwing it away as soon as I open it, I'm keeping the disc in it, for crying out loud! It's not garbage!

Companies that produce those cases (and ship them) do. If you can reduce 25% of the plastic out of a case and charge the same price for your product, that's a huge deal for your bottom line.

Blu-ray cases are already doing that now . My copy of taken and I believe Quantum have that case I fucking hate them.

The irony is that most people will just throw them in the garbage if they break rather than recycling them.

Remember when CDs came in those big cardboard boxes? Sting threw a hissy fit over the trees being used for cardboard and they had to switch to plastic cases. I am amazed at the stupidity of environmentalists. Trees are an easily renewable resource. The oil used to make plastic is NOT renewable and probably creates more pollution in the plastic production process.

If they really wanted to save plastic, DVDs can be packed in CD cases, or the DVD box shrunk down. It's not as if they even include a booklet anymore, nor does anyone really care about all that print on the back of the sleeve.
 
I bought big daddy from wal mart for $5 and went to watch it yesterday and it had one of these cases. I had no clue until I opened, so I think all this flimsy talk is being a bit over exaggerated

I don't think so at all. My copy of the new Friday The 13th has one of these cases and its awful. The plastic is SO thin that I can bend the case in all sorts of ways. It also makes snapping it shut a pain since I basically crush it to close it. They're totally flimsy and complete garbage.
 
I agree many will just throw these out and replace with a regular case and that it is more about cost saving than the environment. I think most won't replace them though. They should just make the cases smaller, if they're smaller even if they do keep the holes, they won't be as bad.
 
I've had a couple cases like that for a bit now. I didn't know companies were switching to them. I thought it was stupid yeah, but didn't give it much more thought than that.
 
Oh gawd, I hate those new "environmentally friendly" DVD cases. They're flimsy, and when they break you have to throw them out and buy a REAL DVD case to replace it.

I'd rather have a DVD stuffed into a CD jewel case than one of these new cases.

Lets hope to gawd some "genius" doesn't decide to start using these new type of cheapy cases for video games as well.

Why dont they just start putting DVD's into BLU-RAY/HD-DVD Sized cases that are black, that would save the same ammount of plastic IMO.
 
I haven't actually seen these in person, but I have to agree that they look flimsy and easily broken. And yeah, you would think there are better alternatives, like just decreasing the size of the case. This, as another person mentioned, does just give recycling and conservation a bad name, because it takes an existing product that worked fine and simply made it worse.
 
It would royally suck if they did it for games because where else are you gonna find real game cases (360 or PS3) ones without buying used games? I don't know if any Bluray films come in the same color as PS3 games.

Point taken- you can couple that with people spending money on replacement cases since they don't want the crappy eco-friendly cases. It's win-win for the case makers!
 
This isn't the first time DVD cases have had some idiotic design element.

Typically, they have indents in that ring around the disc space so you can put your thumb on the edge of the disc. But I can't tell you how many times I've had DVDS cases in which those thumb indents had raised ridges added to them. My current Popeye DVD set has these and it makes removing the discs very difficult.

Did some factory worker see the design and think it was somehow broken? They actually added plastic which killed intended functionality.
 
Wow... it's funny how they're doing this to be "green" but it sounds like most people will just throw these away or they'll break easily (since they're too flimsy) and thus, end up being replaced in one form or another, which basically results as the opposite of what the companies claim to be doing.

But wow, these are ugly as hell. I say make the cases shorter and slimmer like BD cases.

I really hate the stupid cases that have child locks on them. Like, is a child really that dumb that if they wanted to watch an R rated movie or whatever, that them stupid little clips are going to stop them?

If it does cut two million lbs of carbon emissions per year then I can live with it. The far majority of people won't replace the cases so that figure should be pretty close. I'd rather reduce polluting Earth than not risk having a dvd coverart be destroyed. God knows we're already killing the planet with everything else we do carelessly.

I'm fairly certain those are actually for preventing theft. People like to go into stores with a blade and slice the sides of dvds and easily get them out and into their pants.
